It's possible you and I are the only two people on the board that have seen Barbarian Invasions. Excellent movie.
Au contraire, bien chien. The NFBC has been responsible for half the great small media I've taken in over the last 40 yrs (even my favorite TV show is Canadian - DaVinci's Inquest). Ever since the wonderful Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz with RDreyfuss and RQuaid ive kept a close eye on their wonderful, very human stories & BI was one of the best. Vive les Quebecois!!

:hifive: And I have no idea why BI's Marie-Josee Croze is not a huge star. Just caught her for the 3rd time in a tiny role on PBS Mystery's new "Orient Express" and my heart explodes every time i see her. Dont think ive ever fallen in love as quickly with a movie character as i did her speech therapist in "Diving Bell & Butterfly". Her English is as perfect as her French, so that's not it....

She was great in Diving Bell. You're right: instantly lovable.

Little late to the party, and probably not the best run through, but here we go. I think I am a little more pathetic about the 80s cheese than the rest of the lists so far:

I think I lost track somewhere there. Comedies would probably be edited, as well as a couple more horror movies would sneak in there.

shadow of the vampire
Love this movie. Shadow of the Vampire was released with little fanfare, and the film was too quirky to earn any real money at the box office. The first time I saw Shadow of the Vampire, I was amused by the weird humor and thought it was pretty decent. Watching Shadow of the Vampire for a second time, I realize that I vastly under-appreciated this film. Shadow of the Vampire is stunning. This film is a loving homage to silent filmmaking. Though I haven't seen all of the original silent film "Nosferatu", I've seen enough to know that Shadow of the Vampire did a great job of recreating the art direction in Nosferatu. The humor in Shadow of the Vampire is obvious, but subtler is Willem Dafoe's sad portrayal of bizarre actor Max Schreck. Dafoe's performance can be overlooked because of his makeup and his amusing facial expressions. However, underneath the humor is a sad, lonely man. "How can you hurt me when I don't even know how to hurt myself?" asks Max. Max is a tortured soul that has no way to end his suffering. The ending of Shadow of the Vampire is questionable. Did the film need to end in such a dark manner? Maybe not. But even if one questions the choices of director E. Elias Merhige and writer Steven Katz, the first 70 minutes of Shadow of the Vampire should not be dismissed. Shadow of the Vampire is simultaneously touching, funny, bizarre, and tragic - and well worth seeing more than once.

Just came across another one of my favorites that I left off the list:

The Last Starfighter

Alex Rogan: Hold it! There's no fleet? No Starfighters, no plan? One ship, you, me, and that's it?

Grig: Exactly! Xur thinks you're still on Earth. Classic military strategy, surprise attack.

Alex Rogan: It'll be a slaughter!

Grig: That's the spirit!

Alex Rogan: No, *my* slaughter!

I'm with Scoresman- and also have brain damage. I'm blanking on all the ones I love. But the list above is a slam dunk for me.

how do you sit down and list out 100 movies like that. Christ.
The way I like to formulate these lists is to look at other lists. Roger Ebert, Pauline Kael, a lot of good film critics have "best films of the decade" lists you can look at. I find it helps me remember films that might not have occurred to me otherwise.

I can't remember if we've done this before, but I'm always interested in seeing people's favorite movie lists. You don't have to come up with 100. You can list as few or as many as you want. Top ten, from memory: These are movies that left an impression on me. Not sure I even remember all the ins and outs of them

1) Chinatown

2) Vivre Sa Vie

3) Pulp Fiction

4) Magnolia

5) Requiem For a Dream

6) Band Of Outsiders

7) On The Waterfront

8) Last Year At Marienbad

9) Vertigo

10) L.A. Confidential

Also, jdogg, 16 Candles is probably the best teen movie I've ever seen. Did a term paper on Hughes movies in the 90's. Easily swapped Fast Times for my friend's copy of Sixteen Candles. He thought I got robbed. I say no.

eta* Clueless is also up there for teen flicks, all things considered. Too bad Heckerling utterly ruined me with that movie with Pfieffer, whatever that was. It was awful.

Yes to all that. Loved Clueless. And 16 Candles is probably one of the only perfect teen films. Awesome flick.

3) Pulp Fiction

4) Magnolia

5) Requiem For a Dream

Your ideas are intriguing, and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
 I tried to go with movies that viscerally affected me when I first saw them. Lump in throat type of stuff. Pulp Fiction was so...radical, but it just made so much sense. I remember the local theater down in my college town showed it right when it came out. When **** Dale came on, I freaked. Everyone walked out of there amazed. I guess the 90's weren't so bad for cinema, huh? As for Magnolia and Requiem, they're starting to pejoratively call them "message movies," which is fine, but I think underestimates them as movies. P.T. Anderson seemed to want to make an autobiographical/Biblical personal statement. Aranofsky wanted to make a "punk rock" film, in his words. I think they both succeeded.

I didn't get to see Pulp Fiction in the theater the first time. So seeing the 20th anniversary showing was fun.

The 90s could be my favorite film decade.

Got this link from wikkid  in the top 3-5 list.  Too many to drill down to that amount.  I didn't want to invade Tim's list.  I have a top 100 non-comedies and made a quick list of top 75 comedies.  Probably forgot some on both accounts - but this includes a good many of them.  Comedies in next post.

ETA:  List is in order of "like" though that gets pretty loose after a bit.

Comedies in next post.
fantastic list... lots of overlap with mine. love to see Being There, 5 Easy Pieces, King of Comedy as high as they are.

We would be great movie pals, Bink. Only Matchstick Men havent i seen and only American Psycho and Almost Famous (used to be rather famous 'round here for my hate rant on this total misrepresentation of 70's rock road) didnt i love.

I missed the Almost Famous rants.

If you like grifter movies, Cage is great as a neurotic, OCD con-man.

tried a search, couldnt find it, think it was part of one of the drafts. AF represented 70s rock tours about as realistically as Cinderella did charwomen. I do remember my critique included a rather filthy rewrite of "Tiny Dancer" to give a truer picture of bus groupies.

will def check Matchstick.

I heartily endorse this list.

Have you seen To Live & Die in LA recently? I remember liking it the first time, but seeing it more recently and thinking it didn't hold up well.

Good point, I need to check it out.  Wasn't familiar with William Peterson when I saw it and thought he crushed it.  And, of course, Dafoe is almost always good.
