WSOP - just won a seat (1 Viewer)

Yes, last two years and will play again this year. Some serious donkage there. I had a guy call a nice raise with k4 and I had no and he riveted a third 4 to beat me. Fun tournament.

You going to be there?
Strongly considering it. I have some extra vacation days to burn and some free nights in LV

I might be playing in one of the 1K NL HE events in late June. I've played in those twice and while not the monster that the main event is, it still gets about 2500 entries. One thing that I did was have a few (like two) drinks before the event just to loosen up a bit and calm the nerves as I had never played in a tourney that big and it was my first tourney in Vegas.

Also, I had a nice salad during the dinner break instead of getting some greasy meal that would taste good but then tire me out. There were a lot of healthy options in the cafeteria. Probably the most expensive salad I've ever had but you know, Vegas.

So no more November 9.  Just a two day break for final three days and every day of Main Event will be on ESPN with last three days on 30 minute delay.

nice.  i get why they did it, but nobody really watches poker anymore so delaying it months is pointless now.

I never got why they did it.   They delay never made sense to me.  I think you mess with the integrity of the tournament when you delay things for months and give people a change to train and data mine players at the end of the tourney.   Glad they cut that off.   Plus they were airing it against the NFL, that is never good.

I like watching Phil Hellmuth meltdowns

also if I plan on hitting the casino ill watch an episode or two to get in the poker mood

I enjoy playing poker recreationally and have won money each year I have played at my local casino.  However,  I would not want to play poker for a living.  Too much variance and I would need to play at stakes much higher than what I play now in order to make any money.

I do enjoy watching poker on TV but most of all the Main Event when they show you every hand and not just the action hands like World Poker Tour does.  I particularly like it when you don't see the hole cards until after the hand is over so I can guess pn what they might be betting or calling with.

Made it to Day 2 of Omaha 8 event 4. FUJB busted rd 6.  905 entered. 254 left.  136 get paid.  I'm just outside of the money to start today at 2pm.  If I can win two hands in first 80 minutes, I will cash.

I'm flying in tomorrow morning, playing the 4pm Colossus. See you guys later

Arrived to Vegas yesterday and headed over to the rio to get checked in.  I didnt realize until about 2 weeks ago that I play on Saturday (tomorrow) and then if I advance past day one wouldnt play again until Tuesday, and then they finally bring everyone together on Thursday.  Im playing day 1A (day one group A) and then Sunday is 1B and Monday 1C.  Tuesday is 2A (day 2 group A) and 2B with Wednesday being 2C.   Shows how prepared I am.

Anyway, check in was a breeze.  Took all of 5 minutes. Really nothing else to report, just excited to be here and to give this a shot.

Anyone else end up signing up for the main event?

Updates?

Yeah not to sound like a total nerd, but you need to take this seriously. Get good sleep, use the gym at your hotel to keep the body happy and blood flowing, and stay away from excessive booze.
the last two words-Hard NOT to do in Vegas.  I can do the excessive part playing blackjack, but not poker.

Hey guys - only time for a quick update as my fiancé just woke me up to drive us to the Grand Canyon (Ive been to vegas over 40 times and have never even considered going so guess how thrilled i am, haha).  Anyway - I moved onto day 2, which for me, will be Tuesday.  Started with 50k chips, I now have a whopping 54.3k chips.  No hands too crazy. Highest I got was around 72k, lowest probably 42k. I played tight and did a lot of watching.  Most the time worked out but there is one hand that is killing me.  With 30 min left in the day, I got switched to a new table for the first time.  I was definitely low stack and was dealt A4 of clubs my first hand.  I hadn't seen anyone play yet and two people bet it to 2k before my turn to act.  Id been folding hands like that all night, and not knowing anyone at the table yet it was an easy fold.  Of course flop is 3 Q72 all clubs.  Guys bet big again before it would have been my turn.   I had him.  Oh well, at that point I was just happy to say I was going to make round 2.  Im going to have to play a little looser day 2 as the blinds and antes will be 300-600 and 100 for ante I think.   If think of anything newsworthy on my 3 hour drive each way today ill update when I get home.  Thanks for following along!

-apologies in advance that this isnt in perfect "poker speak."  I really dont play that often so dont speak it fluently!

3hrs? I made that drive the first week of April. Gonna take you longer than three hours. More like 4.5. Good luck on the poker.

eta... We hit South Rim. May be closer elsewhere.

You need to let that hand go.  You made the 100% correct play in folding preflop there.

I also disagree that you need to play looser.  You still have almost 100BB so there's PLENTY of time.  All it takes is one hand and you're sitting at 100K chips.  Be patient.  The fact that you played an entire day and have more chips than you started with is an accomplishment.  That hand will come and then you can get your double.  Two of those in one day and you're cruising.  I would argue that you want to play even tighter given the blinds and wait for that one double up.

If you find your stack getting too low (~25-30BB), then open it up and move most/all your chips if you're going to play.  Don't get to a position where someone is obligated to call you just because your stack is too small.

Congrats on making it through day 1....helluva accomplishment.

No doubt.

Which is why it was worth it to me to make the 1.5 trip to Vegas on a Saturday night to play sober no limit against the drinks.

He's probably hitting the skywalk north of meadview.

Yeah I fold that hand with a two-bet into me and that stack every time.
I dont know in my local semi expensive game I may have called depending on the raise knowing that if I hit something then I would be in a good betting position.  A 4 suited is worth at least seeing the flop IMO.  But no doubt in the WS when he is playing tight he made the right call but man I love playing my aces.

Okay just re-read the hand situation.  the raise was $2000 and his chip total is $50000ish(?).  thats less then 5% of the stack, I think he probably should have at least seen the flop given the cards were suited and his position.

No way.

First, we don't know his actual position.  Those 2 bets could have been very early.  If players left to act, then a reraise squeeze is possible after him and then he's just throwing chips away on a marginal hand.  At a minimum, both blinds were left to act.

Secondly, A rag is the WORST hand to play when calling a raise, especially such a low kicker.  His only realistic chance to get paid is hitting a flush and you aren't going to get paid on it every time, especially on a raised hand.  And, when the A hits on the flop, it takes some discipline to get away from it and it's so easy to get caught into paying off some small bets and losing 10-20% of your stack for no reason.

If anything, I'm more likely to call with KQ suited there than I am with A4.  At least there's more ways to hit a hand.

He made the right play on a brand new table without any reads on players.  No different than folding 56 and watching 665 come on the flop and thinking he made a mistake by folding.  It wasn't.  The fact that he's going to be playing on Day 2 of the main event with more chips than he started shows he has some idea of what he's doing.

Thanks for the advice. I just get antsy. I need to remember this!

^First of all I never meant to imply that he didnt know what he was doing, just giving a different perspective on the hand.

After skimming his post twice now I thought he was referring to himself as being last to bet, maybe I read that wrong.  However like I said it was less than 5% of his total stack so I would at least like to see the flop.  And of course you should call KQ suited, why in the hell wouldnt you?   I am not saying he made the right or wrong play here simply giving another angle of perspective.  Like I said in my semi high stakes game here at home I probably would have seen the flop, but I understand in the WSP the situation is much much more fluid.  Just saying there is no shame in betting 5% just to see the flop if you are in good position and have something to work with.
