Dont have mindsapce to make my own, but i can at least highlight where we agree. Most glaring omissions - John Huston's "Man Who Would Be King", Mel Brooks' original "The Producers" and "The Wizard of Oz".

My super elite upper tier:

The Big Lebowski

Layer Cake

Coolhand Luke

Heat

Caddyshack

The Unforgiven

L.A. Confidential

Full Metal Jacket

The Bourne Identity (and the others)

Ronin

Raising Arizona

O' Brother, Where Art Thou?

Snatch

jdogg - great list, will have to read more closely and comment later. Quick reaction is that it's tough to take seriously any list that excludes Fletch and Real Genius.

edit to add: of course the omission of Deer Hunter is not surprisiing, but still disappointing. Lost in Translation down???

Unfortunately, I haven't seen King or The Producers. Oz is a classic, but I'm not interested in seeing it again.

I just re-watched Ronin a few weeks ago. Excellent. I think the final third is the least interesting part. Still, an underrated movie.

I'm not a Chevy Chase fan sans Vacation, and I don't think I've seen Real Genius. I could make an argument for including Deer Hunter, but not for Translation.

My top 100:
Very interesting. Deeply saddened Memento didn't make your top 100. It's in my top ten. Eternal Sunshine is in my top 25.I'll have to put together a list - this is going to be tough.ETA: Damn - no Mary Poppins either.

Yeah, you're right. Memento is fantastic. I think it got bumped somewhere along the way. But I've got more than one Marx Brothers movie and more than one Woody Allen movie - so there's likely a way to get it back on the list. I like Spike Jonze. But I had problems with Malkovich, Adaptation, and Mind. Ultimately (don't kill me) Where The Wild Things Are is the most satisfying Jonze movie to me.

Sin City AND 300? I loved Airplane and Caddyshack as a kid, but those movies don't make me laugh anymore. I like that you listed The Hudsucker Proxy. Cool movie. And :goodposting: for 16 Candles.

I think Ripley is a really movie that is very underrated. I like David Mamet, but I think The Spanish Prisoner is his worst movie. Since you liked Prisoner, have you seen House of Games, Glengarry Glenn Ross, The Heist, or Spartan? I was surprised that Eyes Wide received so many bad reviews. I think it's a brilliant movie.

I've seen most of the movies on your list and then there are a few like Breathless that I've been meaning to see for years. I think The Sweet Hereafter will actually show up on a lot of lists amongst people that watch a lot of movies.

Sweet. Another Mamet fan.

I would have thought you were a David Lean fan. Guess not.
I really liked A Passage to India and Lawrence of Arabia. Looking at his IMDB page, there are a lot of good Lean movies I haven't seen. I have The Bridge Over River Kwai way up high in my queue and I am looking forward to it.

Nice list.

Punch-Drunk Love (2002) 90
People hated this movie, but I thought it was good.
I think because of Adam Sandler being in it, it didn't find the right audience. I also think some of symbolism like the instrument Sandler that falls of the truck and Sandler tries to learn and some of the surrealism threw people off.
I avoided Sandler movies for years. I am not a fan. But I thought he was good in this movie.

This may be the most psychologically telling list I've ever read.

I loved Airplane and Caddyshack as a kid, but those movies don't make me laugh anymore.
Comedies were the hardest because very few make me laugh more than once. Airplane was a sentimental favorite - saw it with my dad and we both quoted it for years. Caddyshack more for the behind the scenes stories on Bill Murray's involvement. Which reminds me I need to add The Razor's Edge. Crap, my top 100 is going to have about 150 films.
