I just did an online compliance training for one of the vendors we work with and they put up a slide under "Red Flags to watch for".

The picture they used was Michael Oliver showing a red card. Firmino was in the picture, not sure if the card was for him.....

I recall when I was doing some really temporary work at my university registering new students, and part of the example material they were using was literally that of one of my housemates. Didn't even make up fake data. Anyway, that's a derail for another thread

My Tigers firing Rosenoir is just ridiculous.

Hope we can get a manager that can take us up to the Premier League...but it likely was the man we just let go.

The next team he leads will probably show how rash and foolish this decision is.

I watched a bit PSV v Fortuna and the Ars v MU matches today.

The first... pSV losing 0-1 late, the manager made big changes to his formation in an effort to turn things around. Fortuna otoh, were inspired- ceding possession (73%) but collectively attacked defensively when it mattered and looked dangerous on every counter. You could see that each side knew what they needed to do, were doing it, and making changes along the way to fix what wasn't working. Both teams, from the players to the managers, imposed themselves and their style on the game.

Which got me thinking about our US players at Juve and Milan where the teams seem to rely on a couple players having moments and otherwise direction and changeless.

Which then got me thinking about United having not much of either. The games of theirs that I've watched... I genuinely have no idea what they're trying to do. Does ETH have a known style of play? Are the players not doing it, I can't tell what's going on there.

But they did have moments today... garnacho is an exciting young player who plays so young so much of the time with the wrong decisions at the worst times. But the kid is electric and will hopefully grow into his big time talent.

‘We don’t give a s**t! – Bayern Munich hit back after referee apology for howler against Real Madrid
snips:
"Matthis de Ligt has revealed referee said sorry to him for his incorrect call in Bayern Munich’s dramatic Champions League semi-final defeat to Real Madrid"

"De Ligt himself later revealed match referee Szymon Marciniak approached him to apologise after the game.
‘The linesman said to me I’m sorry, I made a mistake, I can’t buy anything for that,’ he said."
The one thing I read recently, and, after watching the replay I kind of agree with, is that the GK stopped play when the whistle blew. He made no attempt to stop the shot. And if you look at it, I would agree and I think he likely saves it if the whistle isn't blown.

Sometimes it is just destiny. This is now the 8th time this season Leverkusen has scored after the 90th minute to preserve the unbeaten streak

That's a European football record 49 consecutive matches going undefeated.

They cruised to a 5-0 victory today in the Bundesliga for the 50th (how cool winning 5-0 for that).

One more match to go against 10th place Augsburg to go undefeated for the entire season next week on the 18th.

And then the Europa final on the 22nd and the DFB Pokal final on the 25th.

Historic, especially this isn't one of the European giants we are talking about.

Entirely possible. Who knows? Even if it was allowed, I don't know Bayern could have survived the onslaught for the additional 30 minutes if it went to that.
Still frustrating that it happened.

There are a lot of conflicting reports on how ETH wants to play. He has said he wants possession based attacking style. Rumors are that the board wants him to play a counter-attacking style.

His lack of ability to field the same team game in and game out mostly due to injuries is causing problems.
Poor play out of Rashford, Casemiro, also is not helping.
Also, he is partly through a rebuild, dealing with players brought in under different managers with different styles and the team doesn't mesh. For instance, he would like to play a high line, but with the lack of pace in his defense, they have to play deep. He wants to bring is outside backs into a holding spot as part of the rotation, Dalot can do it, AWB doesn't.

Agree completely on Garnacho. So many bad decisions yesterday.

And now reports today that players are afraid to pass to Hojlund since they don't "trust" him? Completely worthless team, sell them all.

I liked what I saw of him in terms of big man hold up play... Guy is a beast winning the ball. But if that's not what they're trying to do, then I guess... Dunno.

His touch can be a little lukaku sometimes, and I get the feeling he is trying so hard to do something on the rare occasion he does get the ball, that he doesn't always come off. Problem is Bruno is the only creative player that can. Antony, Rash, Garnacho... none serve a call.

Well this rules

====

Turkish Second Division:

- Usakspor keeper saves 90th min penalty.
- Booked for coming off his line.
- Penalty is retaken and saved again!
- Keeper booked again for leaving his line, sent off!
- Defender goes in goal.
- Saves the penalty!
Post video if/when it's available please.

That rules.

The final day of the Bundesliga is done, and Bayern struggled to finish 3rd. Here's how everything shakes out.

Bayer Leverkusen are Bundesliga Champions.
Leverkusen, Stuttgart, Bayern, Leipzig and Dortmund qualify for Champions League.
Eintracht Frankfurt qualify for Europa League.
Hoffenheim qualify for Europa Conference League.

5/25 Leverkusen play in the DFB Pokal final against BL2's Kaiserslautern.
6/1 Dortmund play in the Champions League against Real Madrid.

If I understand the way things work out....
*If Leverkusen win the DFB Pokal, and Dortmund win the Champions League:
Frankfurt move up to Champions League, Hoffenheim to Europa League, and nobody to Europa Conference League.
*If Leverkusen win the DFB Pokal, and Dortmund lose the Champions League:
Hoffenheim move up to Europa League with Frankfurt, and nobody to Europa Conference League.
*If Leverkusen lose the DFB Pokal, and Dortmund win the Champions League:
Frankfurt moves up to Champions League, Hoffenheim moves up to Europa League with Kaiserslautern from BLS, and nobody to Europa Conference League.
*If Leverkusen loses the DFB Pokal and Dortmund lose the Champions league:
The original BL1 groupings stay and Kaiserslautern from BL2 to are in the Europa League.

Köln and Darmstadt are relegated to BL2
Bochum play Düsseldorf in the relegation playoff.
St. Pauli and Holstein Kiel have earned promotion.

Yeah, that's what I thought too.

There's a horrible dating show on... Peacock? Called love under cover. Premise is 5 soccer "stars" go incognito in LA on this show to find true love for who they are as people, not soccer stars.

I'm all in.

Stars are Marco Fabian, Ryan Babel (both pretty legit stars) and then 3 guys I've never heard of. Putting Fabian anywhere in SoCal immediately blows his cover 😆.

It's kinda fun while it's just the guys. But as soon as it fills up with women it's just...that.

So United finish 8th, with a -1 goal diff. But there is definitely some interesting stats behind that.

Overall table, level with Newcastle at 60 pts. Newcastle +23 gd, United -1.

Defensively, they finished 6th. 58 goals against, 1.53/game, 9 clean sheets. Palace is 5th same, goals against and apg, but 10 clean sheets.
Offensively, they finished 10th, 57 scored, 1.5 ave per game. Again, same as Palace. Bruno and Hojlund top scorers at 10.

Yes they seemed to concede a lot, but overall it wasn't as bad as it seems. Their biggest problem was scoring. Then followed by the amount of shots allowed.

The biggest problem was the team spirit and the trust in Ten Hag from the veterans. The younger players, like Garnacho, Mainoo, and even Diallo, played differently, probably because they want to prove themselves and have something to prove. To me, Ten Hag seems like a conflicted coach, having so many issues with players like Ronaldo and Sancho. I don't think he is capable of managing a big team.

I agree there is a bit of a disconnect between the younger and older players. Not sure that is all on ETH. For years the Glazers have allowed a culture of player power to grow, so much so that they back the player over a manager. Extensions and raises to those that didn't deserve it, not allowing certain players to be sold when they should have been, firing managers every couple seasons instead of selling players.

ETH has been working hard to get the manager power back. He did well at it last season, benching certain players when needed, offloading others, changing captains....
I think this season the injuries made that harder to do. Sancho is a prime example. Reports he might return if ETH is fired gives all that power right back to the players.

This summer will show a lot about INEOS' intent with this team. Will the same underperforming players be allowed to stay and be starters? Or will there actually finally be a clear out.

I think ETH should get another season with a proper structure above him. His first season he went 3rd with a league cup and multiple finals. His 2nd was much worse for a lot of reasons, some his, some not. But he is in another final despite all the injuries and lack of scoring (and service).

This may have already been discussed in here (maybe by me), but I was just looking at my family calendar in July and noticed that both the Euro final and Copa America final are on July 14 (a Sunday), with an early afternoon kickoff for the Euro and an evening kickoff for the Copa.

Going to Spain next March. From what I can gather, it looks significantly easier to get match tickets for La Liga than it was for the Premier League. Anyone with experience here?

Generally speaking yes. What team(s) specifically?

Not sure, going to be based on the schedule when I’m there. Ideally one of the Madrid teams but will travel elsewhere if it makes sense.

Ok, I've only ever been to Atleti there, and that was while they were still at the Calderon, Real I think is mostly a case of you can usually get one but only in the immediate run up to the game, if it is the Clasico or derby then all bets are off, not sure on the Atleti situation since they moved to the Metropolitano. Vallecano/Getafe whoever is easy

I just got back from Spain a few weeks ago and saw real Madrid play Sociedad in San Sebastian. Because it was Madrid, tickets were really hard to buy and me, my wife, and our Spanish host could not get tickets together. it was still a great experience though with RM winning 1-0 and Sociedad having two goals disallowed. Spending the day in San Sebastian was also pretty special.

I understand your point of view, but I am not that patient with ETH. I appreciate that he is trying to assert himself with the players, but it's not enough. Eighth place for United is nowhere near what is expected from this club, plus the record number of losses this season. However, I have to agree with you that he has had to deal with many injuries and yet he's still in a final.

Oh I get it. But at some point you are going to need to find patience with a manager because the team needs a major overhaul to get back to being close to what the fans expect. I think if the structure is above him properly, and they can work together to identify the right players at the right cost, that will help. What system does ETH want to play? Let's identify the right players for that system at the right price. No more galacticos, no more spending 87m for a 34m player. No more buying just because they were at Ajax.

Who would you like to see come in? And if you say Southgate :boxing: (the English GGG) or Jose....
Oh and without European football next season, is any top manager going to come?

Managers will come if they are paid well and are assured of a top level transfer and salary budget. One year with out Europe won't dissuade a top manager if everything else is in place.

In fact, if the budget and managers' salary are excellent, no Europe may actually be a plus as the new manager can focus on the league and set up himself up as the manager who brings the team back into European competition.

Man United obviously have the funds to make this happen if they choose.

Yeah. Generally, I think the tickets to the larger teams are fairly easy if it is a regular La Liga match. At least that is how Barcelona is

My dream coach is Zidane. I think he is the best manager when it comes to keeping stars under control, but I'm not sure how realistic that is, especially without European football. I hope and believe that ETH will qualify us for next season, and we will already have more opportunities. Another option would be Hansi Flick. And Southgate, just no...

But imagine if Ten Hag has an even worse season next year, finishing 10th or lower. What managers and players would want to come to such a disaster?

Big IF right now with the claims of FFP issues. Yes, they could be BS claims so they don't spend the money, but still. It is going to take a lot to get someone considered elite.

I agree, missing out this year may be a blessing for a few reasons. But I do believe ETH will get it done with the proper structure above him.

Zidane posses some interesting questions:
Has he built a team? (United needs to be rebuilt)
Is he elite or just was perfect for RM at that time?
Would he come to United w/o CL?

Not sold on Flick, but I don't know enough about him at the club level.

What if they bring in someone new and he finishes 8th? 9th, 10th? or worse? Same players who sunk LvG, Jose, Ole and ETH are still there.
Can play the IF game all night.

It is always possible they keep ETH and it gets worse. But after a 3rd place finish in his first season, multiple cup finals (including one in a disaster of a 2nd season filled with injuries) I think he deserves a shot to correct and get back on course. Last year at this time the fan base was singing his praises. (More IFs coming) IF the club can fix the injury crisis and have a good transfer window (the right players in at the right price and the right players out), I think he can get the team back in contention.

My dream coach is Zidane. I think he is the best manager when it comes to keeping stars under control, but I'm not sure how realistic that is, especially without European football. I hope and believe that ETH will qualify us for next season, and we will already have more opportunities. Another option would be Hansi Flick. And Southgate, just no...

But imagine if Ten Hag has an even worse season next year, finishing 10th or lower. What managers and players would want to come to such a disaster?

Zidane is an elite coach. Leaving aside the three years of Champions League victories, he returned for a second stint when Real Madrid needed a rebuild after Ronaldo's departure and won the title.

But overall, I agree with you 100%. ETH should stay with the team next season, hoping for good results and better transfer management.
And if they decide to move in another direction, I will still support the team and the manager and still hope for good results and better transfer management.

Pochettino leaves Chelsea. Odd since they ended so well and looked to be ready to make a run next season.
yeah this caught me off guard a bit when I saw the rumor and just now the official break up.
Strange to me as well. They had moments of looking great, and then moments of looking absolutely awful. But they closed the season looking like a legit Europe team, and I figured they had turned the corner.

Now they get yet another do-over.

And I'm with you guys about ETH, I think. Let him get a last run on a short leash to see if he can milk anything more out of these players. Let him go early next season if the direction continues to be aimless as it appeared this season.
