So United finish 8th, with a -1 goal diff. But there is definitely some interesting stats behind that.
Overall table, level with Newcastle at 60 pts. Newcastle +23 gd, United -1.
Defensively, they finished 6th. 58 goals against, 1.53/game, 9 clean sheets. Palace is 5th same, goals against and apg, but 10 clean sheets.
Offensively, they finished 10th, 57 scored, 1.5 ave per game. Again, same as Palace. Bruno and Hojlund top scorers at 10.
Yes they seemed to concede a lot, but overall it wasn't as bad as it seems. Their biggest problem was scoring. Then followed by the amount of shots allowed.
The biggest problem was the team spirit and the trust in Ten Hag from the veterans. The younger players, like Garnacho, Mainoo, and even Diallo, played differently, probably because they want to prove themselves and have something to prove. To me, Ten Hag seems like a conflicted coach, having so many issues with players like Ronaldo and Sancho. I don't think he is capable of managing a big team.
I agree there is a bit of a disconnect between the younger and older players. Not sure that is all on ETH. For years the Glazers have allowed a culture of player power to grow, so much so that they back the player over a manager. Extensions and raises to those that didn't deserve it, not allowing certain players to be sold when they should have been, firing managers every couple seasons instead of selling players.
ETH has been working hard to get the manager power back. He did well at it last season, benching certain players when needed, offloading others, changing captains....
I think this season the injuries made that harder to do. Sancho is a prime example. Reports he might return if ETH is fired gives all that power right back to the players.
This summer will show a lot about INEOS' intent with this team. Will the same underperforming players be allowed to stay and be starters? Or will there actually finally be a clear out.
I think ETH should get another season with a proper structure above him. His first season he went 3rd with a league cup and multiple finals. His 2nd was much worse for a lot of reasons, some his, some not. But he is in another final despite all the injuries and lack of scoring (and service).
