Dynasty & Redraft: RB Terrance West, Ravens (1 Viewer)

He is the clear RB2 backing up Tate. He didn't have a great preseason but he didn't have a horrible one either. Lots of people thought Crowell would leap frog him and that didn't happen, so that's a positive. On the other hand, there was question at the beginning of preseason if Tate had a solid hold on starting gig, and I think Tate answered those questions. So, West has limited redraft value unless, or until, Tate gets hurt. And therein lies West's value because Tate has had a history of getting injured.
It depends on how you define "limited redraft value". For me, he's the exact type of RB lottery ticket I try and target in the later rounds. I tend to covet these types picks though. I do agree, however, that Tate has turned in a stellar preseason (and likely camp) securing himself the starting gig.

That's basically what I mean. You shouldn't draft him as someone you are counting on. But there are typically 2-4 picks that are lottery picks, depending on roster size, and he is appropriate there. I like the fact that if Tate is hurt there is a good chance that West is a featured back. Other backup RBs, if the starter goes down, will still be part of a RBBC--you want to avoid those guys. West is a good lottery pick IMO because he has a good chance to get a lot of touches in the event that the starter is hurt, AND the starter has a propensity to being hurt.

Browns running back Terrance West to start against the Saints:

Rotoworld:

Coach Mike Pettine confirmed Terrance West will get the start at running back Week 2 against the Saints.

Ben Tate is week-to-week with a sprained knee. West rushed for 100 yards on 16 carries in the Browns' Week 1 loss to the Steelers as the clear lead back after Tate exited. He'll get to face a Saints defense that finished 19th against the run in 2013 and surrendered 123 yards on the ground against the Falcons in Week 1. West is on the RB2 map. Isaiah Crowell will be the change-of-pace.

Cleveland Browns – Three Performances of Note

Terrance West, RB: +1.4

Breakdown: Cleveland’s third-round pick wasn’t expected to see a ton of action, but with Ben Tate injuring himself (again), it was West’s time to shine, with an even 100 yards rushing on just 16 carries.

Signature Stat: The Towson State product forced six missed tackles, and averaged 4.1 Yards After Contact. He also finished with an Elusive Rating of 154.7.

Rotoworld:

Terrance West rushed for 68 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries in the Browns' Week 2, 26-24 win over the Saints.

West added 22 yards on two catches, making the start in place of an injured Ben Tate. The rookie isn't a special runner by any means, but he gets what's blocked and falls forward. West handled much of the early-down work for the Browns, with fellow rookie Isaiah Crowell handling some third-down action. West out-touched Crowell 21-12. Both players mixed in on the final game-winning drive, leading the Browns to victory. OC Kyle Shanahan's offense is built for runnings backs. West will likely get the start again in Week 3 versus Baltimore.

Sep 14 - 4:32 PM

Rotoworld:

Terrance West rushed 12 times for 36 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for five yards in Cleveland's Week 3 loss to Baltimore.

He was outplayed by Isaiah Crowell, who averaged 5.0 YPC to West's 3.0. West's fantasy value from a forward-thinking perspective is shaky because the Browns go on a Week 4 bye, and Ben Tate is tentatively due back from his knee injury in Week 5. When Tate is healthy, West is unlikely to operate as more than a change-of-pace back. His value is somewhere between an RB3 and RB4.

Rotoworld:

Terrance West appears to be in danger of falling to No. 3 on the Browns' running back depth chart.

Ben Tate (knee) is due back soon, and is tentatively expected to be re-installed as the starter. Isaiah Crowell averaged 5.2 yards per carry with three touchdowns in the Browns' first three games, while West managed a 4.3 YPC average with two scores. It's nothing against West -- he's a solid back -- but Crowell and Tate are better. Owners facing bye-week crunches can consider dropping West over the next two weeks, although we'd try to wait one more to see how things unfold in Cleveland's backfield immediately following the Week 4 bye.

Terrance West - RB - Browns

Terrance West was benched after failing to pick up a first down on a pair of second-quarter carries in Sunday's loss at Jacksonville.

West had room to run in both short-yardage situations, but tried to do too much. "I missed it," he said. "Wish I could get it back. ... I know I've got limited reps. So I know when I'm in a game, I'm trying to get a big play." On Monday, coach Mike Pettine lamented trying to get three running backs into the rotations. We wouldn't be surprised if West goes back to healthy scratch status this week, leaving Isaiah Crowell to pick up all the work behind Ben Tate against the Raiders.

Citing "a little birdie," ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi suggested on Twitter Sunday that Terrance West might lead the Browns in Week 9 carries against the Bucs.
We wouldn't take this as gospel, but Grossi is among the more plugged-in Browns reporters. It's also worth noting that over the last two weeks, Ben Tate has rushed 31 times for 62 yards (2.0 YPC) in two plus matchups -- and then thrown his offensive line under the bus. West, whose been surging past Isaiah Crowell over the past couple weeks, is a good bet to at least share the workload Sunday.

Following Sunday's win over the Bucs, coach Mike Pettine said Terrance West has "earned those touches."
We knew West had surged ahead of Isaiah Crowell, but Sunday showed that he's pushing ahead of an ineffective Ben Tate. West out-touched Tate 16-14 and shined in pass pro. "When you looked at the tape and really compared the three, we feel he's really coming on," Pettine said. Expect the RBBC to continue here, but West is tilting toward the top of the pile. The Browns face the Bengals on Thursday night.

This is interesting, from the Browns website:

4) Browns running game vs. Bengals linebackers

Vontaze Burfict is out (knee surgery) and Ray Maulauga (hamstring) has not practiced this week for Cincinnati. The Bengals are happy with third-year linebacker Emmanuel Lamur (49 tackles, 2 interceptions) but Cincinnati ranks 30th in the NFL in stopping the run. The Bengals may be forced to start Nico Johnson, who was claimed off Kansas City’s practice squad, at middle linebacker. There’s reason to believe that Cleveland’s offensive line can raise their performance and they can run the ball like they did in September. Also, watch for Isaiah Crowell to earn more carries this week. It’s just a hunch, but the undrafted rookie might ignite the stagnant rushing attack.
If Crowell gets more carries, would they be taken away from Tate or West? They've tried a few combinations so far...Tate/West/Crowell @TEN, Tate/West recently, and West/Crowell while Tate was out. Is a Tate/Crowell combination on deck?

Rotoworld:

ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi reports each of Terrance West, Ben Tate and Isaiah Crowell will get carries against the Bengals on Thursday, and that the Browns could go with the "hot hand."

Grossi nailed Terrance West being the Browns' leading rusher in Week 9, so his report shouldn't be taken lightly. It means Isaiah Crowell should get work behind West and Ben Tate, and could even get a chance to be Cleveland's leading rusher. Crowell has shown by far the most juice of Kyle Shanahan's three amigos, but has struggled with ball security. West is a high-risk RB2, while Tate is a low-upside RB3. Crowell is a daily-league dart throw who remains worth stashing in 12-14 team leagues.

Rotoworld:

Terrance West rushed 26 times for 94 yards and a touchdown in Cleveland's Week 10 shellacking of the Bengals.

Pre-game whispers of a three-man committee came true Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell both notched over 10 touches but it was West who got the start and racked up the most yards. Although he averaged just 3.6 yards per carry, West looked as good as he has since Week 1, keeping his head down and getting north/south in a hurry. His touchdown was nearly a fumble, but it crossed the plane of the goal line before he lost control. West is still in a volatile situation, and at weekly risk of being bypassed by a "hot hand," but he's clearly the chairman of Cleveland's committee. West will be an RB2/FLEX against the Texans in Week 11.

Terrance West - RB - Browns
Coach Mike Pettine still views the Browns' running back rotation as a week-to-week proposition.
All three running backs -- Terrance West, Ben Tate, and Isaiah Crowell -- were heavily involved in Thursday night's throttling of the Bengals, and it appears the Browns will maintain a "hot hand" approach moving forward. "It will still come down to the gameplan and how the week of practice goes," were Pettine's words. West currently seems like the "safest" option in Cleveland's tailback corps. He led the team with 26 rushing attempts at Cincinnati.

Rotoworld:

ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi considers the Browns' running back rotation a "week to week guess."

Not even the people covering the team pretend that the rotation and workloads are predictable. Cleveland has the most "hot-hand" backfield in the league, with Ben Tate, Terrance West, and Isaiah Crowell coming off a Week 10 game where they were all involved heavily. West has seemingly emerged as the Browns' lead back, leading the corps in touches and snaps the past two weeks.

Terrance West - RB - Browns

Coach Mike Pettine declined to announce a starting running back for Sunday's game against the Texans.

We suspect it will be Terrance West after he started in Week 10 and put up a 26-94-1 line as the Browns routed the Bengals. Pettine brushed off Ben Tate's recent whining, again saying West had earned the starting role. "There will be times when we have to choose as a staff what we feel is best for the team, over what the individual feels is best for him and this is an example of that," the coach said. West is the best bet here, but owners just need to know the leash is short in this RBBC. Not even the players know how the workload will be distributed going into the games.

Rotoworld:

Updating a previous item, Terrance West took the first rep with the Browns' starting offense during Sunday's pre-game warmups.

Despite multiple reports the Browns will start Isaiah Crowell against the Texans, the team announced no lineup changes, and still lists Ben Tate atop the depth chart, with West handling first-team reps before the game. This situation is as unpredictable as it gets from a fantasy standpoint. The Browns' coaching staff likely doesn't even know who will get the bulk of the workload.

Rotoworld:

Terrance West rushed 14 times for 62 yards in Cleveland's Week 12 win over the Falcons, adding a nine-yard reception.

West led the Browns' backfield in touches, notching 15 to Isaiah Crowell's 12. Crowell won the yardage and touchdown battles, however, notching 88 and two, respectively. West was lucky he got as much run as he did, as he ran the wrong play on his first snap, and fumbled on his second. But the Browns stuck with their two-headed rushing attack, and it paid off with another huge day on the ground. West is the clear second fiddle to Crowell, but his workloads make him a weekly FLEX option.

Rotoworld:

Browns coach Mike Pettine said Friday that "there's a chance" Terrance West will be a healthy scratch in Week 14.

Pettine fumed after West lost a fumble that Bills DE Jerry Hughes returned for a touchdown in last week's loss. Pettine did say West had a productive week of practice. We would expect West to be active for the game, but his usage is a major question mark. He can't be trusted as a flex play this week.

Rotoworld:

Terrance West rushed 15 times for 54 yards in the Browns' Week 14 loss to the Colts.

West surprisingly got the start over Isaiah Crowell despite last week's fumble-six. West operated as Cleveland's primary back for most of the first half, but was replaced in the red zone by Crowell, who scored from nine yards out late in the second quarter. Ultimately, it was an even rotation with West finishing at 15 carries and Crowell 14. Neither was involved in the passing game. West will be a shaky flex option in Week 15 against the Bengals.

Rotoworld:

Coach Mike Pettine said a poor week of practice was the reason Terrance West played zero snaps in Sunday's loss to the Panthers.

West went from starting the previous two weeks to playing behind Shaun Draughn Sunday. The third-round rookie has been in and out of the doghouse all season, highlighted by a healthy scratch in Week 6 and a 26-94-1 performance in Week 10. Pettine is earning a reputation in fantasy circles as an unpredictable coach when it comes to usage.

Rotoworld:

Terrance West rushed 18 times for 94 yards and a touchdown Week 17 against the Ravens.

The Browns' running-back roller coaster continues. After zero touches Week 16, West started and saw 20 touches against the Ravens while fellow rookie Isaiah Crowell was limited to just five looks. West finishes the season with a respectable 171 rushes for 673 yards and four scores, but he was also held under 10 touches in eight contests including two in which he did not see the ball at all. West is a talented runner in what should be a solid rushing attack in 2015, but he will be a risky fantasy option unless the backfield rotation in Cleveland becomes more clearly defined.

Browns running back planning on being leaner in 2015

Follow Browns running back Terrance West on Instagram, and you’ll get an all-access, behind-the-scenes pass into what his private life is like.

And so far this offseason, his schedule has been jam-packed with hitting the weight room.

West posted that he weighed 228 pounds when the NFL season ended with 13.7 percent body fat. He wasn’t exactly proud of that number. To compare, Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch is listed at 215 pounds and Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray weighs 217 pounds.

West said on Instagram his goal is to enter next season weighing 215 pounds so he can be quicker and more nimble when hitting holes and juking defensive backs in the open field.

To shed the weight, cardio has been West’s focus in recent weeks, specifically boxing. West spends hours at a recreation center near his hometown of Baltimore, using an array of punching techniques to strengthen his upper body, while also constantly moving his feet.

“I’m out here working, baby,” West said in one of his videos. “I’m never trying to get off the field, man. This year is my year.”

West showed enough in 2014 to believe he can be a building block for the Browns offense. His 673 rushing yards led Cleveland’s rushing attack, which tallied 1,728 yards – the most by the franchise since 2009. His partner in the backfield, Isaiah Crowell, also certified himself as an NFL-caliber back during an uplifting rookie season.

Furthermore, offensive coordinator John DeFilippo reiterated the Browns will be lining up playmakers in different spots next season. If West loses weight and improves his speed, there is reason to believe he could become a much larger part of the passing game.

What the Browns know about West is that when he’s motivated, he’s proven he’s hard to stop.

With anticipation building up to his first-ever NFL game, West gashed the Steelers for 100 yards on just 16 carries. In Week 17, when he returned to play in front of friends and family in Baltimore, West rumbled for 94 yards and a touchdown.

If the Browns get an eager, leaner and meaner West for OTAs in April, there will be even more excitement about the team’s promising young backfield.

Rotoworld:

Browns coach Mike Pettine says Terrance West has "been great" in OTAs.

It's good to know, as West's stock was damaged by the selection of Duke Johnson in the third round. Johnson should siphon snaps on passing downs, leaving West to fight for carries with Isaiah Crowell. Crowell opened with the starters in OTAs, and is the favorite to earn No. 1 duties for Week 1. As of the moment, West is a tough sell as an RB3.

What's the over/under on this guy being worthless by week 8 or so?

Any Brownies homers got a vibe for how this shakes out?

Rotoworld:

Terrance West got the first rep with the first-stringers at Tuesday's OTAs.

When OTAs first opened last week, Isaiah Crowell got the first rep. This is just a reminder that the Browns will make their backs earn reps -- just like they did last year. West is expected to start off as the backup to Crowell on early downs and to Duke Johnson on pass downs, but isn't miles behind either.

Breakout or bust? Studying sophomore RBs: Part 2

Terrance West & Isaiah Crowell, CLEPRIMER

The Browns signed the crown jewel of the free agent running back class in 2014 in Ben Tate, but he was eventually cut and it was a combination of Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell who led the charge on the ground. With new rookie Duke Johnson joining the mix, this will be a three-headed race for touches that could give fantasy owners fits all season long.

2014 IN REVIEW

West was a much touted sleeper among draftniks and fantasy fans alike, hailing from the small school of Towson. He notched 100 rushing yards in his first game, and surpassed 94 two other times en route to leading the team in rushing. West is a classic one-cut runner, who has solid vision and power, but lacks real breakaway speed. He is decisive in his reads and rarely gets tackled behind the line of scrimmage unless his blocking goes horribly wrong. Crowell is the bigger, faster, stronger back, with equally as good of vision. He was certainly the big-play threat in the backfield, and per Pro Football Focus had the fifth-highest breakaway percentage of running backs who had at least 25 percent of their team's carries. The only trouble with Crowell is that he sometimes waits too long trying to find a home-run hole and gets tackled for a big loss. On one particular play, he drifted along the line all the way to the sideline for an 8-yard loss instead of driving up field to make something out of nothing. But, the good far outweighs the bad with Crowell based on what he put on tape in 2014.

2015 AND BEYOND

I was really liking this tandem as a nice one-two fantasy punch in 2015, with both offering value in the RB2 to RB3 range, but now with Duke Johnson in the mix this backfield is completely muddled. Johnson figures to eat into the backfield targets, as the team has even reported giving him reps at wide receiver. That means West and Crowell will be duking it out for carries, likely both staying in the 10-15 range per game (if that). This is bad news for West, who was more of a volume runner in 2014. In the six games where he had 15 or more carries, he averaged 12-plus fantasy points per contest, versus a mere 3.4 in the nine where he had fewer than 15 totes (he was a healthy scratch in Week 6). Crowell on the other hand, given his propensity for the big play (and nose for the end zone) will have greater upside in Cleveland, even if Johnson gets a healthy amount of touches.

2015 DRAFT VALUE

Static: I'm breaking the rules here, but until we know more about how this backfield will look once the pads come on later in July, it is truly impossible to predict. If you're drafting before then, however, both West and Crowell (as well as Johnson) need to be drafted in standard leagues. There will be a leader in this backfield ... we'll just have to wait and see who it is.

Rotoworld:

Terrance West appeared to surrender reps to Duke Johnson and Shaun Draughn during OTAs and minicamp.
The Browns have said they want to ride the hot hand at running back this season. It's going to be very difficult for West to get that hot hand if he's fourth in line behind Isaiah Crowell, Johnson and Draughn. West had a rocky rookie year, often looking average on the field and getting in the coaches' doghouse off it. The Browns used a third-round pick on Johnson in May.

Terrance West - RB - Browns

Terrance West got the first rep in team drills as the Browns opened training camp Thursday.

Coach Mike Pettine said he will mix it up by day and by drill. But at the very least, West getting the first rep on the first day of camp shows he's not buried on the depth chart as previously speculated. Isaiah Crowell, who got the second rep Thursday, remains our favorite for early-down work. Rookie Duke Johnson will also push for a significant role in this muddled, hot-hand situation.

Man, the contrast in response to good news for West vs. Crowell is amazing. If this is a Crowell news blurb there is a page worth of post, people dancing on the gravy train. When it's West... Crickets.

Exactly. Seems very clear that the coaches will be doing the hot hand, at least for now.I have no idea why Crowell owners are so confident.

I own both. I'm much more confident in Crowell's ability compared to West. But I'm not confident about anyone's usage this year.

OOOOHHH SNAP!

"Browns RB Isaiah Crowell is already having "exchange problems" early in camp.
Crowell apparently fumbled two handoffs from Josh McCown, and later dropped a short pass. It's just a reminder of Crowell's ball-security issues, which earned him an October benching and more limited role down the stretch last season. Crowell is atop the Browns' running-back depth chart, but can't put the ball on the ground in the preseason."
