How To Get To Heaven When You Die (2 Viewers)

Paddington, there's historical evidence for Muhammad as well. Do you believe he was the Last Prophet and that the Qu'run is the word of God? If not why not?
Nope. One thing at a time. It was asserted that there wasn't any historical evidence for Jesus Christ and I just blew that out of the water. Secondly, muhammad merely copied and twisted the stories of the bible to fit his agenda. Unlike the Bible, the quran contradicts actual eyewitness testimony and secular historians of Christ's day. It wasn't written until hundreds of years AFTER the events and contradicts the actual eyewitness accounts of those who were ACTUALLY there. Think about it. Do you really think some guy named muhammad, born hundreds of years after the events knows more about the events than the people who were actually there? It's like someone today writing a book and claiming that George Washington wasn't really President and that they know more than the historians of Washington's day. It's ridiculous and it's what muhammad did. The only reason islam spread as it did was because of murder, rape, enslavement, torture, ect. It's actually a very satanic religion at it's core.
:lmao: Jesus Christ.

There isn't a shred of evidence that it has ever been edited, but the Dead Sea Scrolls in fact prove that it's been preserved. It is the preserved Word of God. Also, here are some historical writings regarding Christ and it doesn't include the writings of Josephus, the apocryphal writings, the Gnostics, the Church writings or the eyewitness writings of Christ, so you are completely wrong.

Early Secular Writings Regarding Christ

THALLUS: (52 A.D.)

One of the first secular writers that mentioned Christ. Thallus wrote a history of the Eastern Mediterranean world from the Trojan War to his own time. Unfortunately, his writings are only found as citations by others. Julius Africanus, a Christian who wrote about AD 221 mentioned Thallus’ account of an eclipse of the sun (Luke 23:44-45).“On the whole world there pressed a most fearful darkness; and the rocks were rent by an earthquake, and many places in Judea and other districts were thrown down. This darkness Thallus, in the third book of his History, calls, as appears to me without reason, an eclipse of the sun.”

Julius Africanus, Chronography, 18:1.

PHLEGON: (1st Century)

A secular historian wrote a history named, “Chronicles.” This original work has been lost, Julius Africanus preserved a small fragment in his writings. Phlegon mentions the eclipse (Matthew 27:45) during the crucifixion of Jesus.

During the time of Tiberius Caesar an eclipse of the sun occurred during the full moon.”Africanus, Chronography, 18:1
uh...Tiberius ruled for 23 years. There were a lot of eclipses, and they are well documented when they occurred and in what parts of the world they would have been visible, the moon's phase at the time, etc. Am I reading this wrong? I don't see any such eclipse. I do understand that the eclipses (in many sources) are listed with astronomical dates (which account for the year zero...to simplify mathematical computations). I'm not sure this eclipse occurred.

What about all of the Jews that lived along side this fellow named Jesus? If the guy was so special, why were they not convinced that he was anything more than a man?

I don't believe the writers of the New Testament were contemporaries of Jesus either were they? Certainly Paul wasn't.
Of course they were. Paul probably didn't know Jesus, because he was Jewish and opposed to Christianity, but he lived during the same time period as Jesus.

This is an odd post. Haven't you always been a strong Christian? I find it odd you'd roll your eyes at someone trying to prove Jesus' existed.

Jesus didn't exactly appeal to what the majority of Jews wanted at the time. Plus he ripped the Pharisees and their beliefs/actions apart. Similar scenario..imagine Jesus came back now and told all of Christianity that the majority of them had it all wrong. People don't take too well to being told their beliefs are wrong. I think most of them would think he was a fraud or would try and criticize him....especially if he was completely changing their established traditions/rules/beliefs.

Paul met Jesus on the road to Damascus right after consenting the stoning of Steven. He only opposed Christianity before His experience with Christ, after that he dedicated his life to the cause of Christ and wrote much of the NT. Paul's writings were approved by the 12 disciples of Jesus, including Peter. His ministry was to the Gentiles, Peter's was to the Jews.

I know his life story. My point was that during the time period where the two both lived on earth, Paul was a staunch Jew, and wasn't a follower of Jesus, so he never met him in the flesh, at least that we know of.

If what you have can be proved, what you have is not faith, it is empirical knowledge. The fact that a person named Jesus existed isn't really disputed among historians at all. That I believe he was God incarnate is a matter of faith, not history.

I find that what constitutes apologetics is usually bad science, worse reasoning, and someone desperately wanting to prove that what they have isn't faith, it's in fact empirical knowledge. I have faith.
Fair points. I just wondered.

Wouldn't it be pretty tough to call him a fraud when he was seen walking on water, conjuring loaves and fish out of thin air, raising people from the dead (including himself), etc?

As far as the Gospels go, I'm certainly no expert but many historical scholars believe they were written 100, perhaps 200 years after the death of Christ, which would hardly make them contemporaries either.

OK Proninja, I guess people disagree and again, I'm no expert. But even if we accept the earliest dates possible, we're still not exactly talking about eyewitnesses right?

I am not trying to attack anyone's beliefs here, but Paddington's dismissal of Islam was based on Muhammad was not an eyewitness. Yet Muhammad, according to himself, received his information directly from a conversation with Allah. That is IMO at least theoretically more credible than whoever wrote the Gospels who were repeating legends they heard elsewhere.

"Many" probably, but not most. Assuming such a death happened of course, it is generally accepted to be 30 to 70 years after but even here there is a belief that a source recording of sayings was scribbled down 10 to 20 years after. Conservative Christians can make interesting if not completely convincing arguments that the gospels were written earlier based on things such as failing to mention the destruction of the temple or Acts failing to mention the early/mid 60's deaths of apostles James, Peter, and Paul. I think first century is a safe bet for the canonized gospels.

Then again NBC's A.D. shows that Luke left about 95% of what was going on out of Acts. :)

Sorry for not responding until now, been busy.

I was too strong on the anti-Catholic talk. I don't like several of their teachings and think their doctrine, if followed to the letter, is dangerous, but to state that a Catholic doesn't know anything about God is wrong.

Yeah, that's all I'm getting into here.

Gllll peas.

This is entirely inaccurate Tim.

Google's assessment of current scholarly thinking puts Mark around 70, and Matthew/Luke in the 80's or 90's. I don't personally agree with that, but 40 years after Jesus death for Mark is a far cry from 100-200.

Most of those things weren't done in front of the Pharisees.

Most dating has them much earlier than that, somewhere around 5-60 years after Jesus' death.
It's difficult to find scholars willing to date the books earlier than the events that led to the destruction of Jerusalem, for obvious reasons.

Right. So, no reason to believe they actually happened then. People have been claiming supernatural phenomena since the dawn of man. Not sure anybody has ever been able to actually prove anything?

My link

Many of these things WERE done in front of the Pharisees and hundreds of others. No one refuted His miracles as fraud in any writings from His time. Think about that.

Holding true to this standard of evidence, surely you must believe in untold numbers of miracles from all types of religions (or even non religious).. right?

What writings were from His time? Even if you place an early date on the gospels how many copies do you think were in circulation among those that didn't believe? I don't think that the early church didn't grow and prosper based on memories of miracles anyway - including the resurrection, but for the most part it grew because the community and fellowship of believers was unique and appealing.

Outside of the bible, no one attested to the authenticity of his miracles in any writings from his time. Think about that.

The eyewitnesses wrote of His miracles. So you think you better than them because they were there and you weren't?

Would you believe me if I told you I was born of a virgin mother? I was there.

The bible was written by God through 40 men in 3 languages over a 1,500 year period. These men lived in different parts of the world, some were rich, some were poor, some were educated, some were not, most didn't know each other, nor did they necessarily have access to the other's writings and yet it fits together as if it were written by one person, because it was written by God. It has no true errors or contradictions. There are countless prophecies which have been predicted and fulfilled perfectly in scripture. Many of these prophecies were written hundreds or even thousands of years before they were fulfilled.

The Predictions that Jesus fulfilled in His coming were in the hundreds. The verse on the left is the prediction written hundreds of years before He came and the verse on the right is where it was fulfilled in Jesus Christ’s actual coming hundreds of years later as testified by the actual eyewitnesses. It is impossible that He is not Messiah, Savior of the world. The ONLY person...past, present or future...who could fulfill all these prophecies is Jesus Christ

Many of these things WERE done in front of the Pharisees and hundreds of others. No one refuted His miracles as fraud in any writings from His time. Think about that.
Outside of the bible, no one attested to the authenticity of his miracles in any writings from his time. Think about that.
The eyewitnesses wrote of His miracles. So you think you better than them because they were there and you weren't?
Would you believe me if I told you I was born of a virgin mother? I was there.
I would believe you IF you had fulfilled hundreds of prophecies written literally hundreds of years before your birth of where you would be born, when, born of a virgin, betrayed for 30 pieces of silver, ect. Just as Jesus was AND if you were to back up your claims by performing miracles as Jesus did, predicting your own death, burial and resurrection and then dying a horrific, torturous death and then rising from the dead and showing yourself to hundreds of people 3 days later as stated after hundreds saw you tortured and killed and then you floated up to heaven in front of hundreds more people as the Bible said you would. Why do you think the wise men knew Jesus was born? Because He was prophesied in the Bible. Why do you think Herod wanted to kill Him? Because he knew Jesus was coming because of the scriptures.

Jesus wept.

You must have have missed the part where I said "outside of the bible". Here, let me show you again.

Outside of the bible,

I just found an old book that prophesied matuski being born of a virgin mother. Haha! There!

It also says he would post on the football guys forums and use a pair of hands as his avatar. Amazing! This book was written hundreds of years ago!

Quite a gift, the strength and certainty of your unquestioning faith. I am pleased you found what you were looking for.

I trust also, that when you feel some folks mock or revile you, that your faith is only strengthened more as that too is in fulfillment of the book is it not? In fact in your heart you must be gladdened by the scorn of others because that proves the correctness of your stance. Revilers actually do you a favor, a service, is that not so?

If you were not centered and mature in your faith one could even postulate hypocrisy in prosthelytizing as it serves the purpose of the one doing so even more, perhaps, than the Lord, at least were one suffering doubt or of less than pure heart since it reinforces belief. I believe this idea is popular with most cults. It makes deprogramming hard..

It also says he would post on the football guys forums and use a pair of hands as his avatar. Amazing! This book was written hundreds of years ago!
Did it say he could knock out a featherweight champion boxer?
Pfft. Not even people who believe in a virgin birth think that a middle aged medical salesman would have a shot against Pacquiao.
He will arise on the third day after the fight.

Listen man, don't you want people to believe this guy is a God and worship him? Embellish a little bit for Christ's sake. Besides it said he'd do it in chapter 1 so we better follow through on it.

Paddington, when you post unending lists like you did, everybody just thinks you're an idiot and a fanatic. It's not a good device for convincing the people you want to convince.

Why didn't the gospel of Luke mention King Herod at all? Because Herod died before Jesus was born.
I had not heard that before.

I did see on the history channel this weekend that Herod built a megaport on the Mediterranean Sea. The show was about Roman Concrete.
Herod was a bit of a ####, but did get a few cool things done, such as rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem.

King Herod could not have died before Jesus was born, because then he never would have sang "King Herod's Song".

I may be skeptical of the Gospels, but I believe in Tim Rice.

I think I am going to have to read up on him. Definitely an historical character about whom I personally have learned very little.
