I think year by year pre-70s would prove tough for a lot of posters given the average age around here but I think grouping by years of 5 might get everyone. At least through the 50s?

The 40s are my favorite decade so I am hoping we find a way to do it in so capacity.
As I look at stuff, I think I have just slept on the 70s besides the heavy hitters.  I will make it tough for me to put lists together, but I will get a lot of new stuff to watch.  I mentioned it in the other thread, but I must have just jumped over that decade and gotten to the 40s-60s when I started digging through the classics.

If we do, I'm just going to copy your list anyway. I can't name a movie from the 40's with any degree of confidence.
Good- double my voting power. There are lots of great movies I would recommend from that era but it can be a shock to the system for modern viewers. My dad wached a lot of older movies so I got a lot of exposure to them as a kid and I am really interested in history- particularly the first half of the 20th century so the movies have a historic interest  to me as  well.

I actually am the same way. I thought I had seen a lot more 70s films than I actually had.

Looks like we have almost the # of votes in the poll as we did lists last time and there are a couple of things that cleared up.  The majority want 70s year by year and want new movies in the mix too.   This is going to go along with me being a little bit of a #### and adding them all in and reshuffling.  I am sorry for those of you who might have gone ahead, but cross 1981 and 1993 off your lists.

The main reason is I am actually getting lists ahead of time and that is going to cause my inbox to fill up and cause me to get confused and more likely to lose a list.   I also want to have a mild schedule for these for my own enjoyment and not getting burnt out.  Like I said, the main reason for firing these up was selfish - I love talking about movies and I want to have a reason to watch stuff I haven't seen.  If we go too fast, and I don't have time to watch some stuff I haven't seen as research for a list or after a poll and lists come out, my enjoyment level is going to drop.  I am glad there has been such a positive reaction and a big turnout for the first draft, but I don't want us to get ahead by 2-3 polls.  So here is where we are at:

1.  I am going to reshuffle the years with 70s and 00s+ included and get our new schedule of years, so again - forget about 81 and 93 (unless they come up again!)

2.  I will post just one year ahead.  That way people can stay up on the upcoming year if their list was done, they aren't able to do the current year, etc..

3.  PLEASE don't send lists for a year until I fire up the thread for that year.  Again, to keep my inbox fairly clear (it was getting to 95% full, and I don't want to delete lists until that year's countdown is done) and to keep my confusion level lower.

4.  I think a decent pace is to have one every 2-3 weeks if the interest level keeps up.   If we have a countdown, then 10-14 for getting lists in like we had for this one.  I might extend it by a week or so if people are having trouble getting lists in, as I start getting busy and home less as the weather warms up, or this starts to feel more like work and less like fun.

I will post the new year we are doing after 1982 very soon.

Looks like the voting is positive for the 00s+ but split on how far to go.  After thinking about it for a bit, I am going to compromise a tad and for the randomizer just do 2000-2013.   I don't think we can do 2017 b/c half the stuff isn't out wide yet, and it is hard to keep up on brand new stuff, so even 2015 and 2016 might be hard for some people.  My plan is around the Oscars to do the year 5 years ago and catch up with new stuff that way.  So next year about this time we will just do 2014, and do one of those a year.  Also once or twice a year, I will just throw in a 60s, 50s, 40s, etc.. poll in there to break things up. I am currently leaning towards chopping up the 50s and 60s by 5 year increments, 30s and 40s as one decade, and one pre-30s.

Cutoff should be 2009 - the last year I was childless and could actually watch films not targeted at kids. ;)

Otherwise my subsequent lists will be a litany of Despicable Me movies.

Well, it's fitting that we get to travel farther back for the next draft and go to the year people were pointing at as a reason to do the 1970s by year.

Next up is..... 1974.

Movies targeted at kids I might agree with you, but not the DM sequels and Minion movies.
Minions has grown on me. Probably because I've had to watch it 82,647 times. I often just wander around screaming "King Bob!" at the top of my lungs now.

70's individual years is going to be rough.  I mistakenly looked at 1972 and only had seen 4 movies from that year.  1974 is not that better - only 7.

We will use this as a measuring stick since it might be one of the more stacked years, so let's see what it brings.

What a crazy collection of movies 1974 is - multiple Roger Corman sexploitation films, blacksploitation films, one of the most famous porns of all time, Benji, multiple disaster/catastrophe films, a handful of all time greats in a few genres - and Zardoz. :loco:

And Art Carney won best actor at the academy awards over Finney, Hoffman, Nicholson, and Pachino for a movie I've never heard of, but I guess should probably check out in preparation for this list.

the original Ed Norton had some chops, his performance will win you over ... it's a terrific movie, you're about to go on a pretty amazing journey

So let's just get this out of the way because I have a feeling y'all gonna hate me by the time this list goes up.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is not only the clear number 1, but the greatest sci fi movie of all time and all time top 10 in any genre. It's also in my top 3 all time.

:boxing:
Sooooo....there is a better sci fi in this very same year.

Watched The Year of Living Dangerously last night for research. I had seen it but I was probably too young to really get it. My mom had a thing for Mel so I saw all his movies. I have to give it to her, young Mel was looking good.

Anyway It’s a good movie and will be on my list somewhere. I definitely have my types and political thrillers push my buttons.

Also bonus points for the tiny woman that played a little Asian man.

Most 70s flicks don’t hold up for me.   Would prefer 80s and after personally.

Peter Weir was a great director!

You gave one movie about 30pts too many.  ;)

Did you get around to watching My Favorite Year?
Yes and I really liked it. O'Toole was incredible. I'm not sure if it's because the guy from Perfect Strangers was in it or if it's something in the way the movie was made but any scene without O'Toole felt like a sitcom. I almost expected a fake laugh track at points. If they had cast someone better in the role as the junior writer, it could have been in the running for my favorite movie of the year.

Disagree.  And I think more people need to jump on board with the awesomeness that was Wrath of Khan.

There are no empty scenes in the movie at all.  Every set is necessary to either the overall story or the depth of the ancillary parts of it.  Shatner nailed every single part of Kirk in that movie in a way that he never did again.  The final battle is, in my opinion, probably the greatest "submarine" battle sequence in movie history, the music, the tension, the silence, the drama, the script, all if it leads to an ultimate moment where if you aren't cheering you are soulless.

Meanwhile, the undertone science fictions themes are perfectly told.  The continuation of the universe created by Roddenbury was immaculate.  This movie was everything that current Star Wars fanboys want - some kind of homage to the past while being different, but not too different because different is bad and the originals are awesome, so give me something good, but not too good because that is selling out - or whatever the ridiculous nonsensical argument against the new Star Wars movies are.  No, Star Trek got it right in the movie.  It got everything right.

It also ranks right up there with Godfather II and Empire Strikes Back as the greatest sequels in the history of cinema.  It took beloved characters that everyone knew, and told a story that was amazing, both in continuing themes we all knew and charting it's own path.  It can be a stand alone movie and be brilliant there as well, giving you just enough of the history of why everything was happening that if you saw this movie cold without knowledge of the first or the TV series, you still can enjoy it for the great science fiction it was full of characters that stand the test of time.

The reveal of Kirk cheating the Kobyashi Maru was brilliantly told to the audience - the alpha hero who wasn't nearly as heroic as he is portrayed.  The fight between science and humanity with the use of the Genesis device is a story that never gets old when done right.  The chess game between Kirk and Khan was acted perfectly and when Kirk opens his communicator to talk to Spock two hours after being told the ship was dead, the cut scene to McCoy smirking like the Grinch that Stole Christmas was the look on everyone's face in the theater and since when watching - yeah, that's Kirk, doing it again, being awesome, I knew it!  The death of Spock was perfectly told between the two men that played those roles.  In as much as the fun of Star Trek is the overacting of Shatner for years, that scene was brilliant - just enough overacting to be the character, but powerful and honest.  You saw Kirk truly hurt for the first time ever in the history of the show.  You saw him vulnerable truly for the first time.  They couldn't have written it better if they tried.

And of course Khan, easily top 10 science fiction bad guy in movie history for this movie.  The Shakespearean tragedy of his character gave us Captain Piccard decades later because it was so well done and intertwined into this story.  He was a bad guy you didn't want to die while you were wishing for Kirk to beat him.  Just brilliant.

And then Kirk's funeral speech.  Five minutes of the most powerful writing in the history of the entire universe created by Roddenbury.  That speech is right up with every magnificent moment that Star Trek has given us.  Tons of movies have funeral speeches.  Most fall woefully short of being as close to as powerful as Kirk's was for Spock.

This is clearly one of the best movies ever created.  30 points wasn't enough.

My #1 for the year, edging Sophie's Choice (only cuz i dont like the guy who played Stingo)

My late friend Bill Kelley wrote Witness for Weir and could go on for an hour about how he was the perfect artist - unique personal vision & generous collaborator at the same time. Matter of fact, when my director cousin got Memoirs of a Geisha from Spielberg after Chicago, he was wondering to me how he was going develop the visual language when all he'd known was set pieces & musical numbers, so i suggested wildass that he call Mr. Weir. He did, cold, and the guy talked with him for hours, just for drill.
