**Fake Scarcity Mixtape Draft #1: Tuesday picks 12 & 4PM EDT (2 Viewers)

When I was in college I had a 1972 Volkswagen bus. My brother and I bought it together. He was in Raleigh at NC State, and I was in Greenville at East Carolina University, and we were to switch out vehicles every month or so. He had the bus first, and it broke down on him. He refused to get it fixed so I did, and the bus became mine until I sold it two years later. It was light blue with a white top. It also had curtains, a wooden back bumper, and a dent on the side with the word OUCH spray painted over the dent. There was also a sticker on the back side window of a mushroom, and the words "Fungus is Among us" on it. The sticker was there when we bought the van. Anyway, the first time I drove it home, my mom saw that sticker and she couldn't scrape it off fast enough.

5.05 - Prince and The Revolution - "Let's Go Crazy" (popular song - hit #1 in 1984)

not available on Youtube but is on Spotify

Do we have an official determining factor of whether a solo artist or his/her band is more popular? I have one where I'm on the fence. Band has more Spotify followers, but solo has more individual song listens.
IMO if you have to question it, you should find something clearer.
We've been pretty liberal about what constitutes a solo artist (e.g. Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs, Pete Townsend & Ronnie Lane). I also vaguely remember the person who suggested the category saying that McCartney wouldn't qualify. I'd just go ahead and post who you want. A music nerd slap fight on a Monday wouldn't be a bad thing.

6.17 - A.C. Newman - "Encyclopedia of Classic Takedowns" (solo artist with more popular band - The New Pornographers)
Is this the artist you were concerned about, or a fallback pick?
This was a fallback pick. But I think I'm happier with it than the other ones anyway.
Newman is the first artist alphabetically on my old, beat up iPod Classic. "There Are Maybe Ten or Twelve" is the song that plays by default whenever it turns on my accident.

7. BB King- "Hummingbird"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fERk1AVu2CM

(State: Mississippi)

A tribute is due here.

As I wrote in the BB King thread, this is my favorite song of his, and it's not even a blues song (though anything that BB recorded has blues elements in it.) The song was written by Leon Russell but BB's version is quite different. A true legend that will be missed.

Which one are you doing for the 7th pick?

7. The Carpenters "Rainy Days and Mondays"

Love me some Karen Carpenter: from Long Beach, CA right next store to me. Such a sweet sweet voice. And this was one of their best songs.

I meant 8 for BB King. Thank you.

I'll take a second to comment on this, as it is probably the most obscure pick I'll make. I think I mentioned her in the albums thread, as this is off her new album. Noveller (stage name for solo artist Sarah Lipstate) is 100% instrumental, mostly electric guitar. She is the single most mesmerizing artist I think I've ever seen in a live show. I don't think I've ever seen a random opener - she opened for another artist whom I won't name for spotlighting purposes as I may want to pick later - hold the crowd like she was able to, and, frankly, wildly outperform the headliner.

There's virtually no info out there on her, so here's the proof that she was born in Alabama. Happy to not have to use my "female artist" slot on her.

Also, here's a badass picture from the Googles of her performance at Asbury Hall in Buffalo, NY - the show I've referred to above.

8.02 Breaking In My Heart - Tom Verlaine (solo artist)

I don't think Television was ever that popular but they've been influential and critically well regarded over the decades. This song was performed live by the band but not recorded until Verlaine's self titled debut in 1979. His solo records are kind of a mixed bag but I've always loved this song. In particular, his guitar solo beginning at around 2:45 is nerd shredding at its finest.

I'll throw it back if somebody objects because I haven't really figured out how to work it into my mix and time is getting short.

8.10 - Cavalier - Shovels and Rope (Category: Song mentions nickname of sports team: Cavaliers)

This a husband/wife duo from Charleston, SC. It's amazing the sound that comes from these two live. They have so much energy, and they both play multiple instruments. Sometimes he sings lead, sometimes she sings lead, and sometimes they both share lead (as in this song).

8 Pyro - Kings of Leon

(Family)

KoL consists of the three brothers Followill - Caleb, Nathan, and Jared
first band I thought of for this cat. isn't the 4th guy a cousin?
they're from Tennessee. they're brothers _and_ cousins
Simultaneously? (In Tennessee, that's not unheard of. )
can you further elaborate on Eephus's joke. TIA>
Sure.
