Teeing off with Mrs. Woz for first serious business in a couple hours. Did my best to explain to her last night what a Calcutta is. She's relieved that we went "middle of the pack" and bought our own team so she feels less pressure.

Swinging hard today and taking chances.

Anyone ever made the switch to a shorter driver shaft?

Its something I've been thinking about for a while, as I go through stretches where I just feel like I dont have enough control over it. Speed is not a problem for me and I have a pretty long swing (which doesn't help). And somehow, my brother....who is much taller than me and hits it much further...his driver (which I believe he just bought off the rack is probably like 1/2 an inch shorter than mine.

I just popped over to PGA superstore naively thinking that this was a pretty common thing (so I'd be able to hit one just as sort of an experiment) but no dice. I was even willing to bite the bullet and just buy a shorter version of my own shaft online, but you can't even do that. Seems like the only solution is to have one cut down, but I really have no desire to do that, not like it and be out $250. (since I obviously would have to buy a whole new shaft)

Can’t you just choke down?

Just finished our member/guest. Ton of fun but not the best golf of my career. While I have occasional rounds in the mid/high 70's when everything is on, my ball striking has not returned to pre-rotator cuff surgery status. Maybe I just lost strength. But I'm struggling to rotate, feel like I have to throw my whole body to the left to get out of the way. Very hard for me to release the club and hit draws. Driving distance is off to so I'm left with a lot of longer irons and even 5 woods into some holes. I have a really good short game, but it puts too much pressure on it to make pars. Our big 24 guy Ryder Cup type tourney is in 5 weeks so I better figure it out. Need to simplify it - thinking too much.

Not me personally, but a regular playing partner recently switched to the Taylor Made BRNR mini driver. He already kind of had a short cut swing with his old driver. He claims to like the switch. He still hits it probably around 270 so it doesn't seem to hurt him at most courses.

Certainly COULD. It just feels weird to me.

Starting to get a little annoyed at the 2024 updates to the handicap system. I play a lot of 9 hole "rounds" after work. In previous years, the system would just piece together two 9 hole nights (regardless of where you played, what tees you played from, etc) into one round and calculate the handicap impact after that.

Now, the system takes every 9 you play and uses some sort of "expected score" modifier to make it count the same as a full 18. And its not like in previous years where if you had to skip a hole (if it was closed or if you finished a match prior to the end of the round) it would give you a net par.(bogey if it was a hole you would typically "get a stroke" on) Now there's some sort of behind the scenes formula.

Example: last week played my course's front 9 and shot a 40. Our front 9 is easier, so I would likely have shot a worse score on the back. But the system adjusted the score as if I had shot a 44 on the back. Is that possible? Sure. But I typically shoot a little better than that and would certainly rather have the opportunity to actually play 9 more holes and have my index determined by holes I actually play.

Now tonight I just play the back 9. Shot a 41....a good score for me on the back. But the "expected score" modifier counts the whole round as if I had shot somewhere between a 42 or a 43 on the front. I probably shoot better than that at least 70-75% of the time.

If those two 9's had been matched together(like they were under the old system), it would have been the equivalent of an 81...which would count as an 8.4 index at my course. Instead, they're now counting as 2 separate rounds with indexes of 11.3 and 11.0. How does that make any sense?

I only play 2 NET events a year (and they're both year long knockout tournaments, so my index obviously is different for each round I advance) so I'm not someone looking to take home a bunch of hardware by sandbagging. I enjoy tracking my handicap as a way to see if I'm improving. This just seems like nonsense and easily exploitable for someone looking to just roll in some pro-shop credit all Summer.

I haven't golfed for serious in 12-15 years after being really into it before kids.

My oldest (eldest?) son is really getting into golf lately, so we hit up the driving range Sunday. Drove out of there thinking "damn it, now I need clubs", because he really likes hitting my old ones.

Picked up a set of Mizzunos today.

I feel like days have gotten longer and time is moving at an all time snails pace while I wait for my new jpx 923 hot metals to come in.
still waiting for the call that they are in... :deadhorse:

Currently having a hard time with my lag putts, this game is so f'n mental

Joined my club 7 years ago and have been trying to make an eagle on the 2nd hole since I got legitimately decent (maybe 5 years ago). Short Par 5 where a REALLY good drive leaves me like 175 in but even a mediocre drive(assuming you dont flare it out right) maybe gives you a shot from 210.

FINALLY got it tonight. Good drive, 184 uphill to the front of the green. Hit a good 5 hybrid right at it, got the right bounce up onto the green. Made a 12 foot uphill right in the center.

The best part is I can finally stop taking **** from my dad, who holed out from like 120 the 2nd time we brought him and has never stopped reminding me about it.

So we just won the whole thing…
So, in this same tournament series, we just played again and got second. Won another mortgage payment.

People are really not great or I married the right person.
Calcuttas can pay serious cash. Guy at our club bought his team and they won the member/member. Cool $24K.
Yep. We bought our team the last two times for reasonable (middle of the pack) money. I'm assuming it's because guys see the female (there's also a handicap differential limit so she loses 15 strokes in the calculation) and don't want to bid, but our team's talents match up really well for our handicap.

I doubt we'll continue to fly under the radar in these things.

What I'm hearing is that hole 2, par 5 eagles are your go-to...

(I think you eagled a par 5 on hole two in the round we played)

I did. Hilarious that I got that hole the first time I played it (plus the one I eagled at Troon a couple of days later) but had to play this one like 500x in order to finally make a 3.

So, all of the sudden, this year, I've added like 30 yards to my driver and am routinely hitting it 275 up to 290ish.

No idea what's going on.

Got my new mizuno jpx923's and holy **** after one range session I can already tell that I'm in love. I did go with a lighter shaft than what I had with my ping g410's but the look at address and the higher flight have me excited to test out on the course.

Anyone played here in Peoria, AZ?
I'll be in the 100+ degree heat on Saturday!

Had our member-member this weekend. Lost our flight by 1 shot (had the 4th best net score out of 52 teams, so that's a bad break)

I've been having some mental driver issues lately and unfortunately they popped up the past couple of days.....mostly in the alternate shot and pinehurst 9's....so I mostly just screwed over my partner (my brother). Probably cost us 3 shots in alternate shot (I just straight up topped several drives) and took away a lot of our options in Pinehurst today. After I did it the first time, it was all i could think about. Really sucks. Just tightened up. Golf sucks.

Even so, we were 1 up in our flight with 2 holes to go. (we stepped it up in 4 ball) My brother's approach came up 1 yard short and rolled off a big false front. He tried to putt it up the hill and didnt get it there (I HATE that he does this. He isn't a great chipper but this is a big slope and it was wet and sloppy. Just awful for a mid-single digit to not be comfortable chipping) We end up making double and our opponents made par to switch it up (went from 1 up to 1 down) and then we tied the last hole. Just needed to make one more putt all weekend(we would have won the tie-break) , so that's tough to take.

And then the shootout was a chunk fest and the winners were 2 women (one of whom is a known sand-bagger) from the last flight. Obviously hitting from the ladies tees (making it like a 240 yard par 4) and they were the only team getting a stroke. Hard to complain when none of the 8 other teams even made a par, but I could have putted the ball from their tees to get to the point where they were laying 2 net 1.

89 today! And left a lot of strokes out there. Been feeling like I'm heavy on every iron stroke so tried just exaggerating weight to the front and everything started going better. Still something wrong because I'm leaking distance but was really happy with being able to adjust and keep the ball in the fairway, hit some greens in reg, had some pretty good chips (my last coaching session we taught me some actual chipping technique so trying it, but has made my around the green game immediately way worse, with the thought that longer term it'll be much more reliable. Started to see some of those gains today), and putting was AWESOME even though like nothing would fall. One three putt, but like 6 up and downs and the rest all nestled up within 3-5 feet of the hole, often even closer.

Shot an 82 Friday with a double bogey on 18 after putting my second in the water, every aspect of my game was working. Saturday morning on the way to my car to go play golf I don’t pay attention, kick a step fall down and now have a black and blue left hand. Still shot 85 yesterday and today while barely being able to grip the club, nttawt. New irons have made a huge difference

I felt like a hit the ball well Friday irons were a touch off but man the rough was deadly super deep and thick with fast greens that I could not read to save my life. The 82 felt like a 75 if I could read those greens and judge the rough on my chips. No clue why these greens were so tough to read

I liked the course a lot. Played decently well with borrowed clubs. The par 3's ate me up. My mid irons need a LOT of work.

How far out of your way would you go to avoid playing with someone that annoys you? I'm pretty sure I'm about to find out where that line is for me.

We had another set of brothers around our age at our club that we'd play with quite a bit. Good dudes. Always a fun round. One of them left and the remaining one picked up another playing partner who I CAN'T STAND. He's been bothering me a little the handful of times we've played together but tonight I just went totally over the edge.

- Generally just VERY slow. Has a whole routine for full shots and putts that is just WAY over the top for a casual after work 9 holes when everyone is just trying to beat the sunset. Adds an easy 20 minutes to an after work 9 holes.

- NEVER shuts up and just everything he says irritates me. Seems like a dude who desperately wanted to be part of the cool crew in middle school and said whatever he thought would get him "in" with that group. And 25 years later he never grew out of it. Tonight....out of nowhere, he brings up the college girl who worked at the turn grill 2 summers ago ("she had a big asset") and feels the need to tell us how he would always "make her make me a burger". Congrats bro....you creepily made a 20 year old do her job )

- Talks to/yells at his ball like 5x more than anyone else I've played with ("Spin!!! Spin!! Spin!!!! Spin!!!".....listen man, once it rolls 25 feet....its not gonna spin). And then when he hits a good shot, its always something like "eh, that's not the ball flight I was looking for, but that should work". Dude....you're a 12 handicap.

- Walked in my line at least 3 or 4 times tonight. (once just directly towards the hole in my line for like 5-6 steps) Also....on one hole, our tee shots were like 3 yards apart. I was away, but I'm cool with ready golf, so whatever. But then he proceeds to put his bag down directly where I'm gonna need to stand to hit my shot....hit his shot and then I actually needed to ask him to move his bag. At this point, I honestly thought he was deliberately trolling me.

- Every time he putts, even when its a putt with a VERY obvious read one way or another....he has to go and stand halfway and then 3/4 of the way to the hole to "feel" it with his feet. Totally disregards what anyone else is doing (doesn't matter if you're getting ready to chip, putting from further away, he's constantly walking around). And then at least half his putts just aren't even close.....and then he has no awareness of whether he should mark his ball, pick up, just finish out, etc. Like he'll have a 12 footer, blow it by 3 feet and now its right in my line coming back the other way. It just never occurs to him that he now needs to go and mark his ball (without stepping in everyone's line) and make sure that his mark wont now interfere with someone else's putt.

- If you're hitting out of a greenside bunker, he will ALWAYS stand like 10 feet behind the flag directly in your line of sight. Dude.....i'm not prime years Phil Mickelson. There's at least a 5% chance I'm gonna skull this shot and dome you if you dont move.

- We get to the last hole and I'm beyond annoyed at this point. Just trying to get out of there before i snap. I hit a lousy drive into the high grass, but didnt want to make a thing of it. So I drop a ball, hit an iron up to the green and walk up to putt out. He hits a lag putt, walks up to hole to tap it in and then asks me if I want the flag out. I'm like 40 feet away....putting off the fringe onto a severe downslope and not only have none of us taken the pin out all night....but none of us (as far as I can remember) HAVE ever taken the pin out in the 5-6 times we've played together. I look over at my brother (Who knows how irritated I am at this point) and he's damn near pissing himself. I just half-heartedly hit a putt in the general direction of the hole and just picked up my ball.

I will NEVER play with this clown again. Dont care if I have to hit balls for 45 minutes after work waiting for him to clear out and finish in the dark. I'm honestly not sure how I'm gonna handle it if he doesn't take the hint. I'm a pretty non confrontational person, so I really hope this doesn't get to the point where I have to say "dude, I dont want to play with you" but kinda thinking it might,

Zero chance I'd play with him. I have one guy I have just cancelled out of tee times lol

One guy I work with plays on occasion and my coworker buddy makes all the times, he will ask ok if I invite X this round......lol

Oh, that goes without saying. If I see him with me on the tee sheet, I'm moving.

But if we both show up after work (which seems to be a pattern) I'll have to start coming up with excuses.

There are only 2 guys at our club that are generally avoided. They make the same 10:40 tee time pretty much every day and without fail....the other 2 spots in that 4 some are ALWAYS the last 2 to fill up. Both are super annoying, slow, etc, but at least their antics are kinda funny. (they're 2 older jewish guys who just bicker back and forth) This aint that.

Man - every club has these guys. We have a few. One guy is a nails on a chalkboard type. Not only talks incessantly, he’s a close talker. I mean walking down the fairway right in your face. Then when you go to hit he stops a foot away and stays there. Doesn’t go to his ball. Another is the type that the first time you meet him after the first tee shot will say “Smails, want me to tell you what you’re doing wrong in your swing?” Nah - I’m good. Especially since I can beat you 10 out of 10 times. There are others. The habitually slow guys. We played yesterday as a threesome in 3:25. That’s what we want. I avoid these players at all cost and if they book in my foursome I move elsewhere.

yep - my normal 4some can play in 3:30-3:45 without even trying to go fast. Play ready, etc etc. We still look for balls, line up putts etc but its so easy to play "quick"

There is one guy that I'm bailing on my golf trip this year because I can't stand playing with him. Nice enough guy, even a tad dorky but man on the course he drives me insane.

Last trip we rode together one round, he would go to my ball, I would grab my clubs and say "I'm good" you know to signal for him to go over to his ball and he would just sit there. I flat out asked him one time - what are you doing? You wonder why you guys are so slow - go to your ball. he says. But I want to watch you hit?......... WHY MF'er you think I'm going to cheat? WTF ??!@#!

He would just move the cart so slightly and sit there, then he mumbles and walks around mid putt when he's playing bad. I finally just started walking between shots so he would hit first then come to me lol.... I told him by the time you watch me hit - you could have been at your ball - figured out what you are going to hit before I even swing

My favorite is hes always 30 yards ahead looking for his ball then where it actually is..... I don't hit it as long as I used too but I can still get it out there 260-270ish and it just grinds his gears that hes not the longest hitter lol..... I mean he hits a good ball but its like do you think you are on tour?

The last time I almost had it out with him was this scenario
.......................................... /OB-----------------------------------
........................................./OB
......................... X.......... /
OB----------------------OB/

Envision the above - that is the left side of the hole - he hits his ball to the left. We are away playing a trip tournament. He pulls his ball left - he is probably 2 feet OB (he was in someones yard technically - it was a large CC that had big houses with yards down some of the holes. Anyway - we get to his ball and he goes ooh - I don't think I'm out, I'm like um yeah you are. And he says something like well I'm out between the orange and yellow (for reference)...... but if you draw a line from orange to orange I think I'm in. I'm like that's not how that works - its post to post. So we argue. I call over the other guys we are playing with that I just met a day ago lol..... They are like we don't want to get in the middle of anything. I just asked, When determining out of bounds is it post to post or any 2 posts.

Guy looks at me and hes like  ... sohe walks over and I jsut say orang to yelllow or can you go orange to orange. He just shakes his head - orange to yellow.

So now slow annoying guy is all pissed off :lmao: I mean yeah it sucks he had a perfect like on some grass with nothing but a couple posts marking the area but I don't lay the course out.

Just can't do it.

Oh, for sure. There are other guys at our club that break little etiquette rules occasionally, talk too much, comment on your swing, etc. Nobody's perfect (myself included). But this dude is just CONSTANTLY doing stuff/saying stuff that drives me absolutely nuts. It honestly comes across as deliberate because I honestly can't believe that someone who has been playing golf his whole life (dude grew up at one of the top 100 courses in the country) could have so little golf courtesy.

My mild irritant is the guy who self analyzes every shot he plays:

Whack, ball flies about 220 down the middle
I say "Nice Drive" to which he replies "A little off the toe, I just can't figure out why I'm doing that. There's just no hip turn. Come on Paul - you're better than this. What is wrong with you?"

Dude, you're 65 years old and a 10 handicap. Say "Thanks" or "That'll work" and shut it.

lol... I'm slightly guilty of this :bag: but it's more like ..... "Thanks, caught it off the toe but I won't complain" - only with people I play with regularly.

Stranger - might just say Thanks with didnt get all of it but it'll work

Can you play him for money and/or sleep with his wife?

I personally like taking this type of guy's money but, yeah, if you're just playing to relax and this guy bothers you then your time playing isn't worth it and you're better offer adjusting your schedule or just hitting balls and practicing during that time to avoid him.
