Dynasty and Redraft: Jaelen Strong 26 year old free agent (1 Viewer)

Rotoworld:

Arizona State WR Jaelen Strong is disputing a report that he may need wrist surgery.

Strong calls NFL Network's report "old news," and says he's "fine." Strong admits he suffered a fractured bone in his wrist last November, and "played five games with it." NFL Network had a report last year that Tre Mason needed surgery. He didn't have it and went on to become the Rams' starting tailback as a rookie.

Jaelen Strong produced 35.1% of his receiving yards from the slot.
Love the way he fights for the ball, but reading he has trouble getting separation. You seeing that?
Was it published before or after his combine 40? He ran really well at the combine and it took a lot of people by surprise. It seems he has trouble translating that speed to the game and was curious if people familiar with him felt that better coaching could get more out of him.

Rotoworld:

The Steelers medically cleared Arizona State WR Jaelen Strong (wrist) during his visit to the team's facility on Friday.

Pittsburgh put Strong through several tests during his visit and are sending those results to the rest of the league. Strong has disputed a report saying he would need surgery on a fractured bone in his wrist, and this report seems to back him up. Despite posting a 40 time of 4.44 at the Combine, Strong lacks ideal play speed and fits more as a possession receiver with some ability to win in contested situations. He is expected to be a top-50 pick.

Rotoworld:

Arizona State WR Jaelen Strong "is almost animalistic in how he pursues a football," according to NFLDraftScout.com's Frank Cooney.
"He shows exceptional hand-eye coordination that maximizes his long arms and sure hands," Cooney wrote. "Add to that intense focus and an ability to snag the ball regardless of its trajectory or defensive traffic and this is a receiver with mad ball skills." Strong had 75 receptions, 1,122 yards and seven touchdowns in 2013 and 82 catches for 1,165 yards and 10 scores last year. He fractured a bone in his wrist, likely requiring surgery, and will soon be re-checked by Indianapolis doctors. "It's doubtful that a fractured wrist will impact Strong's career, but after doctor gives the OK don't think twice about taking him anywhere in the second round," Cooney wrote. "Any later and he is a steal."

Rotoworld:

An anonymous NFL scout said Arizona State WR Jaelen Strong is a faster version of Larry Fitzgerald.

"People can't cover him on the back shoulders and fades because he has amazing talent to leap like Fitzgerald had," he told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "He's excellent ball tracking, hands, jumping, in traffic. Became a star playing with a very average quarterback. I thought he'd run 4.55. It shocked me." High praise indeed. "A big, physical, jump-ball type receiver," another scout said. "He can outsize defensive backs and is good with the ball in his hand. Limited as a route runner." A third scout was also ho-hum on the evaluation: "If you watch him play, he looks more like a possession guy. I don't see the great fanfare in his play. He's adequate. I don't think he's sensational."

That's also called motivation, which helps drive some player to succeed to prove wrong the teams that didn't select them (see Tom Brady).
Yeah, I kind of like that. I liked him predraft and while normally I may reassess after he dropped in the draft - but the chip on his shoulder could be a nice motivator.

Jaelen Strong - WR - Texans

Texans coach Bill O'Brien criticized rookie WR Jaelen Strong's conditioning.

O'Brien added he would the same about "virtually every guy out there," but he mentioned Strong by name. The comments sound like a coach trying to motivate his players following a disappointing practice. Strong should play a big role in the Texans' offense this season.

The Texans plan to limit rookie Jaelen Strong to outside receiver.

"We’re going to leave him in one spot, on the outside teach him that and watch him get better," HC Bill O’Brien said. "We have high expectations." Strong’s conditioning has been an issue in the early part of minicamp. With Cecil Shorts penciled in as Houston's No. 2 receiver, Strong has an opportunity for a big rookie-year role. Strong projects to play opposite DeAndre Hopkins in three-wide sets.

Rotoworld:

Third-round WR Jaelen Strong has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury in the Texans' first OTAs.

It's not a serious pull, but it's notable as Strong is competing with veterans Cecil Shorts and Nate Washington for reps in two-wide sets. He also took heat from Bill O'Brien five weeks ago for being out of shape. The coaching staff has been talking up Washington while Strong rehabs on the sideline.

Rotoworld:

Third-round WR Jaelen Strong (hamstring) returned to practice Tuesday.

Strong had been sidelined since the first set of OTAs. It's nice to see him back for this week's mandatory minicamp, as he has a position battle to win. The No. 2 spot opposite DeAndre Hopkins is up for grabs between Strong, Nate Washington and Cecil Shorts.

Jaelen Strong, Benardrick McKinney could start for Houston Texans

Excerpt:

Why Jaelen Strong could start: The Texans traded up in the third round to draft Strong out of Arizona State because receiver was a serious need for them since they released Andre Johnson. Strong was not able to do much during the Texans' offseason. He was not allowed to be a part of the team's rookie minicamp because of an invitation to the NFLPA Rookie Premiere, and he suffered a hamstring injury on the first day of organized team activities that kept him out for the rest of OTAs and two of three minicamp practices. In the meantime, the Texans have liked what they've seen out of veteran Nate Washington, whom they signed in free agency. Coach Bill O'Brien has praised Washington repeatedly. The question at hand, though, is which rookies have a chance to earn a starting job, and I'd put Strong in that category. Though the "every job is open" mantra isn't really the truth, this position is more open than most for the Texans.

Jaelen Strong - WR - Texans

Texans beat reporter John McClain said he's been impressed by rookie WR Jaelen Strong's performance at training camp.

McClain did admit Strong "has a lot of work to do" after missing most of OTAs and minicamp with a hamstring injury, though he's been impressed by his "smooth hands" and precise route-running. Cecil Shorts and Nate Washington are ahead of him on the depth chart but DeAndre Hopkins is the only Houston receiver guaranteed a starting role.

Rotoworld:

Third-round WR Jaelen Strong is listed with the third-team offense on Houston's first unofficial depth chart.

Cecil Shorts is listed as a starter opposite DeAndre Hopkins, while Nate Washington and Alan Bonner are grouped with the second team. Strong has shown well through the early days of camp, but the Texans aren't going to gift him depth-chart position. Strong needs to outplay Shorts and/or Washington to establish himself as one of coach Bill O'Brien's top three wideouts.

Rotoworld:

Third-round WR Jaelen Strong caught a 10-yard touchdown pass in Saturday's preseason win over the 49ers.

The 10-yard strike came from third-string quarterback Tom Savage. It was Strong's only target of the night. Strong worked as the Texans' No. 5 receiver Saturday night, behind DeAndre Hopkins, Cecil Shorts, Nate Washington, and Alan Bonner. Strong has an uphill climb to be a contributor by Week 1.

Rotoworld:

Texans third-round pick Jaelen Strong caught five balls for 40 yards and a touchdown in Sunday night's third preseason game.

Strong got work with the Brian Hoyer offense, but primarily ran with the second-team receiver rotation opposite fellow rookie Keith Mumphery. Strong used his size and strength to battle when Ryan Mallett entered the game, hooking up with Mallett on a six-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Strong is behind DeAndre Hopkins, Cecil Shorts, and apparently Nate Washington on the depth chart, but should ascend as the season moves along. Through three preseason weeks, Strong has seven catches for 55 yards and two TDs.

ESPN's Adam Caplan reports Cecil Shorts has a dislocated left shoulder.

Shorts suffered the injury on the final play of Sunday's loss to Atlanta. The Texans also lost Nate Washington to a hamstring injury against the Falcons, and Washington did not return. They may have to throw fifth-round rookie Keith Mumphery into the starting lineup on Thursday night against the Colts. Third-round pick Jaelen Strong could also get his first NFL action.

He had 2 targets and 2 catches... Mumphries had what 8 targets? He's still 5th on the pecking order (when Shorts/Washington are healthy) it seems for whatever "doghouse" reason O'Brian makes up.

Strong played, did well with his playing time, didn't make a mistake (from what I saw), and capitalized on it. How can they justify not getting him more playing time going forward?
