18 countries are represented.  I would have liked to fit in something from Eastern Europe, Spanish-speaking Latin America and the Middle East but the letters didn't work out.

Draft prep got me out of my safe zone so I listened to a bunch of Krautrock, Reggae and other world genres that I wouldn't have normally.  This was good although my gimmick did pretty much remove me from the competitive aspect of the draft.  Only a handful of my longlist options were snipe-worthy and I prioritized those.

Since everyone else is posting their Island, here's mine:

  • A - Aerosmith - Honkin' on Bobo
  • B - Blue Oyster Cult - Fire of Unknown Origin
  • C - Cash, Johnny - American 4
  • D - Dale, **** - Tribal Thunder
  • E - Edgar Winter Group - They Only Come Out at Night
  • F - Flash Gordan - Movie Soundtrack
  • G - Guns N Roses - Appetite for Destruction
  • H - Howlin' Wolf - The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions
  • I - Idol, Billy - Rebel Yell
  • J - Jesus Christ Superstar - Movie Soundtrack
  • K - Kunzel, Erik - The Great Fantasy Adventure Album
  • L - Lynyrd Skynyrd - (pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd)
  • M - Meatloaf - Bat out of Hell
  • N - Nox Arcana - Transylvania
  • O - Osbourne, Ozzy - Blizzard of Ozz
  • P - Petty, Tom - Full Moon Fever
  • Q - Queensreich - Empire
  • R - Rush - Moving Pictures
  • S - Slade - Keep your Hands off my Power Supply
  • T - Traveling Wilburys - Volume 1
  • U - Uncle Kracker - Double Wide
  • V - Vaughn, Stevie Ray - In Step
  • W - White Stripes - Elephant
  • X - punt - punt
  • Y - Yankovic, Weird Al - Running with Sissors
  • Z - ZZTop - Eliminator
I didn't get fancy like Eephus, I just drafted stuff I liked.  I think it's a nice mix of rock, blues, and movie classics, so it would sound just like I still had access to Pandora on the island.  Note that since I took **** Dale, I'm fairly certain MY island will have good surf.

Wanted to say thanks to @John Maddens Lunchbox and the others that kept this shindig on track over the past few weeks.  It was fun distraction and made me revisit some of my favorite albums, plus get a whole list of new things to try.

Very underrated island imo.  Good stuff.  I agree about **** Dale.  He was on my radar also.

Can't remember who, but somebody suggested that we post our actual Desert Island albums that we would take if there were no restrictions/snipes to deal with.  I would like to give that person the finger b/c that was a hard question and I have been obsessing too much about it since then. ;) I came up with an ever changing list.  The top 15-20 were easy-ish, but then I had to narrow down about 75 potential albums to the last few.  This would change depending on my mood, and hour of the day, but this is the list I came up with as of this morning of the albums I would grab on my way out the door as I head to my island:

Radiohead:  The Bends, In Rainbows

Pink Floyd:  Animals, Wish You Were Here

Pearl Jam:  Amsterdam 6-27-12

The Who:  Quadrophenia

Talking Heads:  Fear of Music, More Songs About Buildings and Food

Opeth:  Still Life, Watershed

Tool:  Lateralus

The Black Keys:  Rubber Factory, Brothers

Soundgarden:  Superunknown

Smashing Pumpkins:  Gish

The Rolling Stones:  Sticky Fingers

Neil Young:  Everybody Knows This is Nowhere

Iron Maiden:  Live After Death, 7th Son of a 7th Son

Thin Lizzy:  Jailbreak

U2:  The Joshua Tree

Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway

Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes

The White Stripes:  Elephant

LCD Soundsystem:  This Is Happening

Queensryche:  Operation: Mindcrime

It's amazing how hard it is to narrow down to 25.  There are so many bands that I had to leave off the island.   Albums too - I could have easily just taken 26 albums from 3-4 bands and have been pretty happy as well.

Didn't make a last pick and now I feel guilty, so 26.4  ZZ Top - Rio Grande Mud

Also here is a Spotify mix with one song from each album.  Enjoy.

I'd be curious what album shows up on the most lists that are done this way.

I'm gonna throw something like this together over the next few days.  Gives me something different to do on my commute.

I would change out about half. Contenders for me would be more jazz (my Rhino Records Charlie Parker, Kind of Blue KJarrett's Koln Concert), more classical (the 9th, Debussy/Ravel quartets. Mozart's 39-41), What's Goin' On, Winehouse, Joni & Jaco live, my Elvis Costello best-of, Last Tango in Paris soundtrack and all five LPs of Li'l Stevie's wonder era.

If I were to do an album poll, like the year end one but for a decade (say start with 00s for the first one and work backwards) would people be interested? Would probably want to get at least 25 lists to make it worth the bit of work it takes in compiling and then counting down.

It was me.  :scared:

I will post mine tomorrow, to be fair.

I'd contribute but I think aggregated poll results would likely produce results with the popular classics floating towards top of a very broad pool.

ETA:  ...and Mclusky Does Dallas with 30 points.

I agree and was thinking we could do a modified points/voting system to try and combat it a bit.

In my head I was thinking

You can assign 5 albums 30 points

You can assign 5 more albums 25 points

You can assign 5 more albums 20 points

You can assign 5 more albums 15 points

You can assign 10 more albums 10 points

You can assign 20 more albums 5 points

------

If people just send a ranked top 20/30/50 list to me - I'll assign those point amounts accordingly and it gives natural cut off points.

This would actually encourage strategic voting/ranking - you can highlight an album you feel is an all timer that doesn't get enough attention by giving it 30 points. If your actual favourite is a stone cold classic that you think everyone will vote for, maybe you only assign it 15... but then what if everyone has the same idea as you and the one you love falls farther in the consensus list because everyone thought the same way???

I'm not entirely sure why I'm bringing game theory into an album poll, and there may be reasons that people can point out to me why the above doesn't/won't work but that was one of my initial thoughts as I drove home thinking about this today.

well done. unlike any other list, the Binkything is 100% artists who care about more than strumming and their haps & just being who they are, maaaan. Every one of these acts went past what they do best for the more that makes rock like no other kind of music - equally personal & powerful. forehead star for binky.

Eeph had this right like 20 rounds ago. Going with the Brazilian Zappa rather than the American. Planned on saving him for my all-Brazil list, but screw it.

23.25 Tom ZéEstudando o Samba

Full album

Still filling out my DI jukebox, and Zorn is such a weirdo (not in a bad way) that he's hard to pin down, but I'll go with this one. Bonus points for the Brazilian music/movie stuff. Zorn got a hell of a cast together for this one.

24.06 John Zorn, The Big Gundown

full album
Which is gonna be your Z pick?

Not pretty for anybody ...been there.
It was a strange event

The opener was a local act, celebrating their record release. Putrid.  One of the worst I've ever seen.  But the venue (Black Cat) was all about them

It wasn't in the main performance space, but in some back area I didn't even know existed.  It was hot as ####.  Crowd was borderline awful too. Matt Korvette spent a few minutes berating people for talking.  DC is starting to suck

The in-between music was Blink-182 DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME ON ME  YOU'RE ALREADY A VOICE INSIDE MY HEEEAAD, whatever the hell that's called, on an endless loop.  Presumably chosen by PJ, it played after they finished too. It would have been cuter if the opener and atmosphere hadn't been so awful already

But ###### they rocked it and the new record is good too

No, I mean literally drunk pissing of the pants.  It's no party.

Black Cat is down by Rhode Island Ave., right? IIRC...

Used to love that venue. Hung out with Joe King from the Queers there. Great jukebox back in the day. Played the Dolls all night and hung out with the local band the Goons.

This was the year 2001, though.

That Blink-182 album is actually good.

Yeah it's on 14th, between Rhode Island and U St.  U'd be amazed at how different it is.

I'd probably be stunned. Used to get passed joints on the street down there, but my cousin reports how different D.C. is now, so I'd be a little prepared, I guess. I can only imagine the Village in NY and extrapolate.

Yeah I was just in the Village a few months ago. I would compare it more to Baltimore where I live.  Baltimore has better restaurants.  DC is like if the Village and 5th Ave had a super obnoxious baby. All pomp and no circumstance.

Did you guys see that Spoon   has apparently had their new single (Can I Sit Next to You) subtly playing in the backgrounds of music venues, airports and by house bands on late night shows etc... for months? Pretty cool IMO  http://www.stereogum.com/1925891/spoon-can-i-sit-next-to-you/video/

Yeah put those dudes in the top 5 of the last 20 or so years, if not flat out at the top, just an outstanding body of work that keeps growing.  Kudos to BD.  Still wish I had that damn picture from school.

It occurred to me that, unless my memory is messing with me as usual, we must have watched the Challenger explosion together in history class.  Three years later I saw him play, with that exact history teacher on drums, and that remains the only time (that changes in July)
