What a huge win for Liverpool.  Defensive issues abound but we are gonna be scary good on offense.
Woa, big fella...it was Arsenal, without Koscielny & Mertersaker...but they were beautifully taken goals.  Don't think "you're" gonna see that much space in many other games.  They looked woeful in the first half...except for Miralem Coutinho's free kick.  Plus, Arsene.

No, he's right - United are going to win the league.

Do you think subsequent "replays" would take about a minute?  Nay! I say thee, Nay!
Even if I put on my @shader cap, and think about radical changes - I don't think video replay belongs with the official on the field.  I can see a use where you have a video official - but I am not really sure what that official really needs to do.  Use the goal technology - everything else is better left with an official in real time - as long as they are consistent.

I seriously agree...I'd hate to see the ebb & flow of soccer restricted.  It's part of the attraction; Shakespearen "human frailty" ( God knows, there's plenty of that; on the players' part) combined with tragic error on the "black&white arbiters" of the game... that's what makes it so enjoyable.  TL:DR=NO COMMERCIALS!!

That was seriously in danger of becoming a debacle like the 8-2 loss to United a few years ago.  Sucks to lose at home on opening day though.  Wonder what Claude has to say about it.

Come on you R's!
Very happy for my man Jimmy Floyd.

Manyoo and Liverpool were a little scary today but here's your annual opening day Southampton observations:

Coach Claude is trying to turn them into a possession team, which certainly hasn't been their style of late. They were missing Fonte and Bertrand yesterday and Romeu, playing the part of Wanyama, was a step slow on the Watford (Capoue) goal. But after 20 minutes they dominated play and should have won after the Schlonger drew a red card when Ben Watson tackled him on a breakaway (after spotting Watson a three stride lead).  I don't know if they have the personnel to play a possession game although Double J Hojbjerg will help there -- he can play in the Prem, no question.

You're all gonna like seeing Nathan Redmond play for a decent team. He looked very much like a £30 million sale to Liverpool in 2018. Damn, everywhere I looked this weekend there was an ex-Saint playing well for somebody else (sell us Schneiderlin back, Jose, if you're not gonna use him!)

Bottom line: they'll beat the lower half teams again but won't be as competitive against the big dogs this season. 9-12 looks like a reasonable prediction.

Haha.

Seriosuly though I don't want them to change anything about the in-game experience.  One thing that has really drawn me to this game is the constant action and the lack of replays/commercials/stoppages.

West Ham v Chelsea today.  Not sure if it's big enough to merit a game thread of it's own, but it's a pretty great opening Monday game.

Here's my stupid idea for Friday, when I'm driving from central Md to Canandaigua, NY to visit a buddy and take in a Rochester Rhinos game Saturday night. He doesn't get home from work until 5:30 so I was gonna time my drive to be at a bar in Penn Yan at 3 o'clock to watch Saints get their butts kicked at Trafford (Pogba vs Steven Davis  :o ). Then 40 minutes up to my buddy's house, plenty of time for dinner and beers. Do sports bars in the Finger Lakes boonies put up the footy games? I bet anybody in there watching will be an awful Manyoo fan. Redundant, yadda yadda.

I dont know what thread to post in so here goes.

Fellaini is getting too much love and his performance being called "great".  Sadly, the bar must be set so low that a conservative mistake and foul free game makes it "great".  He was fine and no worse then Rooney.  He sat in the dm spot and knocked short passes around, made some nice defensive interceptions but did nothing relatively worthy of "great".  He often slowed the attack and when they needed someone on the ball who could attack a space or take a player on and start a break, he couldnt do it.  Pogba in that spot will make fellaini's game look pedestrian.  So many better options in that role that can do exactly what he did but also offer something going forward with pace.  Evidently he was a top passer for the weekend.  When you make a lot of short passes and back passes in the middle of the park, that happens.  To be fair, if thats the game he is playing Ill take the performance as they won.  But against better, quicker CMs, the fouls will come out and he will be overrun.

Fellaini is often credited with being great in the air.  In 3 years I have never seen him attack a cross like Zlatan did in the first half.  Went over two defenders and smashed heads.  The fro wont do that.

5 years ago Rooney has 3 goals.  He gets on the end of that Zlatan flick and buries it.  He also doesnt need to dive on the other ball he got in the box trying for the PK.  Sad.  His touch is gone, his shots from the top of the box are weak.  Nice header for the goal though.  Poacher.

Zlatan is something United have been missing for a couple seasons.  A presence up top who will fire from anywhere (and score).  25+ out and buries it.  Some nice flicks and passes, too bad Rooney doesnt have the speed to play off him.

Mata, Herrera and Valencia had some nice combo plays on the right.  Valencia has looked good.

Bailley looks the part.  A little reckless but I dont mind.  Vidic was reckless too.

All in all a solid win.  Can be better with a few tweaks.  Pogba will help.  Sadly I think we will get a Pogba/Fellaini partnership for now despite so many better options.

Felllaini did exactly what he was asked to do.  And exactly what United will need from him if they play Pogba.  It was Bournemouth, but you want you DM to snuff out chances, and that's what he did.  Very well, IMO.

True.  Not sure about very well, but he was fine sitting in the role.  Solid/controlled game, but do you really want him as your holding MF when you have options that give you that and more?

Schneiderlin - More pace, stronger defender

Carrick - Better passer, more discipline

On what I knew of the players at the beginning of the season, I would have anticipated Schneiderlin in that role.  But Mourinho chose Fellaini, and was rewarded with a performance that everyone would have agreed was excellent if it had been turned in by Schneiderlin.  It's always been hard to evaluate Fellaini in that role because he never really fully committed to playing it.  If Mourinho can get him to buy in, he solidifies a position where I felt United lacked depth.
