WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling, BUF (1 Viewer)

I think the Packers are gonna use MVS creatively tonight. We'll get to a see a new side of him. He's not been asked to do much beyond be the deep gunner who takes the top off the defense, in part because they didn't need him to be but also because he's not their best option underneath.

Well, guess what? Now he is...
I hope so. But I think what we're going to find out is just how one dimensional he is.

Is this wishful thinking because he's in your lineup?

I hope you're right. Have him in there right now.

Feel like I've seen this movie before. And it ends with a line of 2-18-0.

In part, absolutely. But he's in my lineup because I thought he could have a boom game with Adams out. Adams is such a target hog that Rodgers will be forced to spread it out more and I have to think the Packers are going to have to rely on the only decent receiver they have and run plays to get him open.

I've got MVS in there now, but I'm looking at Tonyan as well who I could plug in although he has to compete with the other TE.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling caught 4-of-8 targets for 45 yards in the Packers' Week 4 win over the Falcons.

With Davante Adams (hamstring) out, MVS was tied with Jamaal Williams for first on the team with his eight targets. Robert Tonyan was the big winner with Adams and Allen Lazard (core) out, however, catching three touchdowns. MVS is a big-play specialist but doesn't have the route-running chops to win in small areas. He'll be a WR4 in Week 6 against the Bucs. Adams will be back for that one.

Hope you went with Tonyan. Clearly, the Falcons were focused on stopping MVS and were not concerned with Tonyan. I think I saw 4 flags thrown on interference on balls thrown to MVS.

Lazard will be out for a while, Adams couldn't even suit up last night, how effective will he be next week?

Everyone will throw MVS away and then he will have something like 6-99-TD next week and everyone rolls their eyes and runs back to the waiver wire. It's hard to just cut him.

That would be hard to do on a bye week but anything is possible!

I suppose Rodgers might target him 13 or so times if no other option is available. I doubt it though, Rodgers knows he can't catch.

Its all well and good if he can get a free play with the hard count (how he scored his one TD so far) and Rodgers is very good at this cheese. The other cheese is throwing it at MVS and hope for a defensive penalty. Got about as good of odds of that happening as you do of him catching it.

Dropped him in a 12 team PPR league.

In a sweet matchup minus Adams he scored 8 points. Meh.

Now they have a bye, Adams will be back, Tonyan emerging.

Predicting when he will blow up will be impossible and I can't see him being consistent at all.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling caught his only target for 19 yards in Green Bay's Week 8 loss to Minnesota.

It was actually Equanimeous St. Brown (1/12) who Aaron Rodgers targeted downfield in three-wide sets, cannibalizing MVS of his usual role downfield. Either way, fantasy players can't possibly start Valdes-Scantling right now since he's totaled one catch the past two weeks. He'll remain a thin WR5/6 for deeper leagues on Thursday against the 49ers.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling caught 2-of-4 targets for 53 yards and two touchdowns in the Packers' Week 9 win over the 49ers.

What had the makings of the worst game of Valdes-Scantling's career instead turned into one of his best. The inconsistent deep threat committed a brutal third down drop in the opening minutes of the second quarter. That drew a glare from Aaron Rodgers. Instead of ignoring his wideout for the rest of the night, Rodgers found him for scores of 52 and one yards. The 52-yarder was an impossible-to-defense pass Rodgers arced over the entire D to a wide-open MVS. The one-yard score came as Rodgers rolled to his right on third down and found MVS in the back right corner of the end zone. Especially with Allen Lazard (core) likely to return for Week 10 against the Jaguars, MVS' targets are not about to increase, but he will continue to offer big-play potential as a desperation WR4.

Week 17 Dynasty Risers and Fallers: A.J. Dillon flashes incredible upside

Excerpt:

FALLER: WR MARQUEZ VALDES-SCANTLING, GREEN BAY PACKERS

Whenever Allen Lazard is healthy, Valdes-Scantling can simply be written off. Lazard opened the season out-snapping his counterpart in three straight games and has played on more snaps than him over their previous three games, as well.

Despite being on a snap count after his return from injured reserve, Lazard has also out-targeted Valdes-Scantling, 25 to 15, since Week 11. There isn’t going to be much of a mark for Valdes-Scantling, but even some late-round fliers in rookie drafts have more upside than he does with Lazard on the field.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling caught 2-of-3 targets for 87 yards and a touchdown in the Packers' Week 17 win over the Bears.

Valdes-Scantling caught a 72-yard bomb from Aaron Rodgers and dropped another long score, a seemingly weekly occurrence for the speedy deep threat. With only one game with more than six targets this season, MVS has been and will continue to be one of fantasy's most volatile pass catchers.

- Rotoworld

Marquez Valdes-Scantling caught 4-of-6 targets for 115 yards and a touchdown in the Packers' NFC Championship Game loss to the Bucs.

The 100-yard game was just the fourth of Valdes-Scantling's career. The highlight was a 50-yard touchdown where he got a step on Carlton Davis down the right sideline. MVS is always a 70-yard score waiting to happen. The problem is the drops and mental mistakes. They were less frequent in 2020 as he rolled to new career highs with 680 yards, 20.9 yards per catch and six touchdowns. Headed to free agency but already going on 27 years of age, MVS will be a fascinating case on the open market. It is possible he is ready to be paid like a Breshad Perriman-type talent.

Having grown as a player and person, could Packers’ Marquez Valdes-Scantling be in for a huge year?

JASON WILDE For the State Journal

JASON WILDE For the State Journal

GREEN BAY — Marquez Valdes-Scantling insisted that nothing has changed. He hasn’t altered his mentality. His confidence hasn’t skyrocketed. While he acknowledged that he’s grown a bit as a human being, he chalked that up to the passage of time, and nothing else.

As proof, here are a few of the things the Green Bay Packers No. 2 wide receiver said during a 15-minute Q&A session with reporters Thursday afternoon:

On what has changed for him this year: “Time. That’s about it. There’s not really anything past that. I’m still the same guy. I haven’t done anything different.”

On if he’s in a different place in his mental approach: “No, not necessarily. I would say, just want to keep getting better year in and year out, just keep growing as a player on and off the field. It’s not anything that I’ve done to say, ‘Yeah, I want to be a better player or better person.’

On how much his confidence has grown after his successes last season: “(It’s) the same as it’s always been — high. There’s no time where my confidence is low. Contrary to popular belief, my confidence is always high, no matter what’s going on, no matter if it’s a dropped ball or a missed block. ... So, anything that y’all say or my teammates say or anybody says, it won’t ever affect me because I probably already said it to myself 1,000 times. So it won’t ever have an effect on my confidence — ever.”

All of which was very interesting, since plenty of those who have been observing Valdes-Scantling and spending time with him on and off the field see him as vastly different than he’d been in the not-too-distant past.

For instance, when asked about the training camp Valdes-Scantling had this summer, quarterback Aaron Rodgers responded by saying: “You know, I don’t even want to talk about the receiver, I want to talk about the person. The person is in a way different head space. I think he is so settled mentally, very clear, very present. … He’s become a true professional. There were times a couple of years ago where we didn’t know if we could count on him because he was inconsistent in his practice habits and his daily habits. But that’s not the Marquez that I know now.”

Then, there was head coach Matt LaFleur’s observation: “I’ve seen a guy do a total 180. I don’t want to make it sound like he wasn’t a good practice player before ... but I would tell you from the moment he steps on that field, whether it’s in pre-practice in our stretching routine, I think he’s got a different mindset about it, and I think it’s translated to his play, his ability to produce consistently in practice. We’ve all seen the great flashes that he’s been able to show, and, because there’s some big time moments that he’s had. I just think that they’re happening much more consistently now, and I think that’s a credit to his approach and where he’s at mentally.”

And, finally, there was this, from wide receivers coach Jason Vrable, who spends more time with Valdes-Scantling than any other coach: “I think just his maturity overall, just he's grown as a human being, I think everyday he comes into this building, I just feel a purpose with him to get better. … I can't wait to see where this season takes him. The way his mindset is right now, I’m really excited about him.”

Rodgers is, too. The three-time NFL MVP hasn’t always seen what he wanted to see out of the speedy, talented Valdes-Scantling, but he’s clearly invested in MVS to a greater degree than ever before and has spoken glowingly about him repeatedly this summer. Rodgers even when so far as to visit the local Barnes & Noble bookstore on Oneida Street to not only support a brick-and-mortar bookshop in the age of Amazon but to pick up some required reading for MVS in his journey of self-improvement.

“Got him a little starter pack on some books I thought he would like,” Rodgers bragged. “He’s a way different person. He is very present, very professional. He’s a leader now in the room, he’s very comfortable with the scheme.

“I’m really, really proud of him. It’s not surprising to me that his growth on the field has really come with growth off the field. The word ‘maturity’ is probably overused at times — and maybe has a negative connotation, like there was some sort of immaturity before — but he definitely has a calm way about him now that he might not have had as a younger player.”

Valdes-Scantling reiterated Thursday what he’d said at the start of camp, that being an impending free agent won’t be a distraction to him at all this season. But there’s no denying that he has a chance to cash in big-time if he takes his big-play, down-the-field talents and adds more production on short and intermediate routes.

He resuscitated his career last year, going from losing the No. 2 receiver job and playing one singular snap in the 2019 NFC Championship Game to catching 33 passes for 690 yards and six touchdowns, leading the NFL in yards per catch (20.9) and catching four passes for 115 yards (including a 50-yard touchdown pass) in the Packers’ NFC Championship Game loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Well aware of his ability to take the top off opposing defenses, LaFleur, Vrable and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett wanted to see marked improvement from him this summer in the rest of his game — and they have.

“He can run. A lot of people know that. I think for him, his precision in route running has improved dramatically,” Hackett said. “From the standpoint of a defense, what you’re going to do? If they’re afraid of him as a deep threat, they’ll play certain defenses that give him those more precision routes. But you’ve got to make that decision now: Are you going to take away the precision routes, or are you going to take away the deep ball?

“Him improving that world of his routes has been really exciting for us, and we’re excited to see the things we can do with him now that he’s added to his repertoire."

Marquez Valdes-Scantling caught 3-of-7 targets for 17 yards in the Packers' Week 1 loss to the Saints.

Both MVS and Davante Adams saw seven targets from Aaron Rodgers before Rodgers was removed from the game with the Saints up four scores. MVS was encouragingly targeted on a few intermediate throws, not just deep shots. Valdes-Scantling, the recipient of praise from Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay coaches this summer, will surely see better days, perhaps starting in Week 2 against a Swiss cheese Detroit secondary.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling caught 3-of-4 targets for 59 yards and a touchdown in Week 3 against the 49ers.

Valdes-Scantling led the Packers in Week 1 targets before going catchless last week. Aaron Rodgers locked on to Davante Adams for 18 targets, but this was a spike game from MVS, who had a 47-yard catch and 12-yard score. Valdes-Scantling has been getting open — Rodgers missed him on multiple deep shots last week — and he's second on the team with 16 targets. A matchup with the Steelers, who are coming off a three touchdown game to Joe Burrow, have Valdes-Scantling in the Week 4 flex mix.

Packers placed Marquez Valdes-Scantling (hamstring) on injured reserve.

The team is reportedly concerned Valdes-Scantling, a burner on the outside, could re-aggravate his hamstring if he returns to the field too soon. He'll instead go on injured reserve through Week 6 and become eligible to return during the allotted 21-day window upon being activated. Allen Lazard is a viable addition in deeper fantasy leagues since he has the potential to soak up Valdes-Scantling's downfield role.

Packers coach Matt LaFleur said there is "hope" WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling (hamstring, IR) returns for Week 8 against the Cardinals.

"Absolutely there's hope for that," LaFleur responded when asked about Valdes-Scantling's status for Thursday night. "We'll see. I know he's out there running today, and we'll see how he feels tomorrow. I know he's working hard. He wants to be out there." Davante Adams' and Allen Lazard's recent trips to the COVID list may force the issue to bring Valdes-Scantling back sooner than expected. As it stands, Randall Cobb, Equanimeous St. Brown, and rookie Amari Rogers are slated to start in three-wide sets against Arizona.

PFF's Doug Kyed reports the "current expectation is" that Packers WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling will be activated off injured reserve and play in Week 8 against the Cardinals.

It would be much-needed news for the Packers, who will be without Davante Adams and Allen Lazard (both on COVID list) against the NFL's final remaining unbeaten team. Valdes-Scantling would immediately be the WR1 for Aaron Rodgers by default and could step into a big air yards spot. It's always risky to start a player fresh off a hamstring injury, but Valdes-Scantling could have a tantalizing role.

I picked him up this week more so my opponent didn't have a chance. He has multiple byes and I would rather him not have this blow up game chance to add to it.

I like his upside tonight. But yes anxiously awaiting to hear if he will be active.

I imagine I don't need to remind people that this is one of the biggest matchups of the season so far. This is a playoff tiebreaker game between these two teams. GB has to be considered the longshot on the road without Adams, but both teams are going to want this game pretty bad. I don't see Rodgers throwing underneath stuff all night. MVS *does* get open but has terrible drops. And would be coming off the hammy and all. But I mean I'm not throwing Aiyuk out there. Antonio Brown is out. In one spot I am debating between MVS and Rondale Moore, who hasn't done much lately but Nuk might be limited. But in three other spots where I picked up MVS, it seems like a dream spot to me where I really have no other options worth a dang.

In one league I was down to Gabe Davis at WR2 or whoever I could get in a trade. Was offered AJ Green for one of my late 2nds but I don't want to do that. MVS > Gabe Davis in a landslide.

So yeah he will probably pull down 5 for 65 on 14 targets.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports that Marquez Valdes-Scantling (hamstring) status for Thursday Night's game against Arizona "doesn't look good" as of now.

Packers beat reporters had not really picked up on a lot of optimism, though Valdes-Scantling did make the trip to Arizona with the team. The Packers have until 4 p.m. to activate Valdes-Scantling, who even off a hamstring IR stint would be a good volume play with the COVID-related absences of Davante Adams and Allen Lazard. As it is, Randall Cobb, Amari Rodgers, Equanimeous St. Brown, and Malik Taylor are the active roster wideouts for Green Bay tonight.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Packers are not expected to activate Marquez Valdes-Scantling (hamstring-IR) for tonight's game against the Cardinals.

Between COVID-related absences for Allen Lazard and Davante Adams, there will be a lot of available targets tonight for Randall Cobb, Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon, and Robert Tonyan. Equanimeous St. Brown is the only one of the other rostered wideouts (Amari Rodgers, Malik Taylor) to see a target in last week's win over the Football Team. Plan your fantasy football strategies accordingly, as there are going to be some horizontal passes in this one for the Packers.

The Athletic's Matt Schneidman said Marquez Valdes-Scantling will "probably" be too expensive for the Packers to re-sign.

The Packers are going to have to break the proverbial bank to keep Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams on the roster, leaving little room to sign unrestricted free agents who are sure to see interest on the open market. Spotrac projects Valdes-Scantling’s next deal to be around three years and $24 million. MVS was on his way to a career year in 2021 before suffering a back injury that kept him sidelined for the season's final five games. He was finally used by Green Bay as something more than an exclusive deep threat, though he still averaged a whopping 18.1 air yards per target, by far the highest mark among Packers pass catchers. Schneidman said MVS's "production is simply too sporadic for a cap-strapped team to spend that much on him." A team with plenty of cap space will likely overpay for Valdes-Scantling’s services.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports free agent WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling is expected to land over $10 million per year.

Whether that comes from the Packers or another team is the larger question. Packers QB Aaron Rodgers wants Valdes-Scantling back but Green Bay’s cap room makes it a hard fit after extending Rodgers and tagging Davante Adams. Leaving Green Bay could lead to a clearer path to targets for Valdes-Scantling, while staying would lock him in a top-two role with Rodgers as his quarterback.

Don't even think about it anybody. He's not a good WR. Probably 10+ better WR's in this draft. He was barely decent with Aaron Rodgers throwing to him, and Davante Adams across from him. If he's any higher than 3rd on your WR depth chart, you are in trouble.
Yeah, he’s barely worthy of $4-5m per year

I think he will end up settling for a one year deal somewhere for quite a bit less than $10. There is no way that there is that kind of market for him.

Hard to believe any team would give him a big contract...he has had a ton of opportunity to go to the next level playing with a Hall-of-Fame QB and has never cashed in...to think a change of scenery is the answer seems really foolish.

I mean, I think the guy isn't very good, but he's probably worth more than $10.

But seriously, if a team wants a deep threat who can stress defenses, I'd MUCH rather go after a guy like Will Fuller. He's better than MVS in every way, and has actually shown the ability to be a #1 at times.

Especially coming off an injury plagued year, and a suspension the year before, Fuller is likely going to be the steal of FA if he can just stay on the field, and with how cheap he'll be, there is basically no risk in signing him.

Not sure there is no risk in signing a guy who cannot stay on the field, but I do agree the upside is exponentially better with Fuller vs. MVS. If stars align Fuller could be a home run. I could see KC taking a shot on him if affordable and he could transform that offense if he were to stay healthy.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports the Packers are "very interested" in re-signing free agent WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Reporter Tom Silverstein has told fans to "not be surprised" if MVS is back after Davante Adams was traded. Adams' move both freed up cap space and created a dire receiver need for the Pack. Deep threat MVS took an overall step forward in 2021, and was by far the most productive of the Packers' non-Adams wideouts. Silverstein reports MVS has been angling for a one-year deal in the $7-$10 million range. It would frankly be surprising if this doesn't get done. Aaron Rodgers needs a familiar face back.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports free agent Marquez Valdes-Scantling is visiting the Chiefs on Wednesday.

This visit comes right on the heels of the Chiefs giving Tyreek Hill permission to seek a trade after extension talks broke down. Valdes-Scantling is nothing close to the playmaker Hill is, but he would at least offer some field-stretching ability if the Chiefs end up losing their WR1. The Packers, who lost Davante Adams this offseason, are reportedly interested in bringing back Valdes-Scantling.

Chiefs signed WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling, formerly of the Packers, to a three-year, $30 million contract.

$18 million comes in the first two years and the maximum value of the deal is $36 million. Valdes-Scantling missed some games for the first time this offseason, and thus had a 430-yard season, but he led the NFL in yards per reception in 2020 and has a career yards per reception of 17.5 in four seasons. This is probably a bit of an overpay for a wideout that doesn't offer much underneath, but it's good fantasy news for Juju Smith-Schuster and Travis Kelce. As for MVS, there are worse quarterbacks to work with in your career than Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes.

Man I wish I could run really really really fast. Don't even need to be able to catch apparently.
I was looking at the WRs in this draft, and wondering how many I'd rather have than MVS. Not MVS at 10 million, but if they were the same price. I came up with at least 9, and a case for 16.

MVS is a #4 WR talent. He couldn't make it work with Aaron Rodgers, despite infinite chances to step up and be the #2. This might be the worst overpay of FA(at least at WR) so far, and that is saying a lot.
