WR Trey Palmer, TB (1 Viewer)

The Bucs took him in the 6th round out of Nebraska . I’ve been following him all summer and I’m intrigued for an end of my bench guy. He’s around 6’1” 190 lbs.

Here is one scouting report -

Trey Palmer NFL Draft Scouting Report

WR, Nebraska Cornhuskers

Nebraska WR Trey Palmer is a dynamic receiving target who has flourished this season during a breakout campaign with the Cornhuskers. Palmer capitalized on the wide-open dynamics of Nebraska’s overhauled offense and quickly established chemistry with QB Casey Thompson en route to a single-season receiving record campaign (1,043 yards) before declaring for the 2023 NFL Draft.

Originally a five-star recruit, Palmer was a commit to the LSU Tigers program and spent time with the team as a core special teamer and return specialist. With his blazing 10.42s 100m dash time from high school, Palmer’s speed was an obvious asset in the open field—even if he was caught in the log jam of pass-catchers in the offensive depth chart. He would, however, look for bigger opportunities with a transfer to Nebraska ahead of the 2022 season.

Few wide receivers this season have done more with their opportunity than Palmer. Palmer exploded onto the scene with a highly-productive season, serving as the big-play catalyst for the Cornhuskers offense. He’s got good initial quickness and effective vertical speed in the passing game, offering smooth acceleration to steadily reach his top speed. He’s not the biggest nor the strongest and he’s not the MOST explosive, but he’s a plus athlete to play in any alignment for Nebraska. His ball-tracking skills are among his best traits and he wins routinely deep over the middle of the field in these instances. He makes good adjustments to the football. Playing him in off coverage is asking for trouble, as he sets up his breaks well and he is effective to expose when teams try to match him with safeties in these deep portions of the field. The fact that he has special teams experience on his resume is a huge win for him as well as it opens the door for an immediate role for just about any team if he goes to a group with a deep wide receiver room.

But physical play isn’t something that really jumps off the page with Palmer’s game. While acknowledging that he plays in a spread offense, I am curious how he’ll be set to handle more physical coverage in the NFL. The majority of his production in 2022 has come in the slot to this chapter of the season, which naturally affords more room to work and carries a stigma for positional value if that’s where teams decide he is destined to play. His separation often comes on deep developing routes—I am also uncertain of just how dynamic his route tree currently is. If he’s not overly developed here yet, there may be a lag in his transition that makes him a more limited route-runner and therefore easier to account for when he’s on the field.

Palmer has the potential to develop into a complementary wide receiver target and a big-play creator in a vertical offense in the NFL—he should be considered a calculated risk given his sample size of production in the passing game. But your worst-case scenario is a dynamic return player who can stay on a 53-man roster and dress on gameday.

Top Reasons to Buy In:

  • Vertical receiving skill set is highly effective
  • Game-changing speed
  • Special teams resume is well established
  • Developmental upside is present thanks to burst and speed
Top Reasons For Concern:

  • Is not an overly physical player. How will he acclimate to tighter windows and coverage?
  • Has not illustrated a fully comprehensive route tree
  • Took majority of snaps and logged majority of wins in the slot
  • Scheme-specific fit; not sure how well he currently projects to timing-based offenses
Size (NFL Combine):

Height: 6′ 0”

Weight: 192 lbs

Arm Length: 31 7/8”

Hand Size: 9 5/8”

Athletic Testing (NFL Combine):

40-yard Dash: 4.33s

Vertical Jump: TBD

Broad Jump: TBD

Short-Shuttle: TBD

Three-Cone: TBD

Bench Reps: TBD

Ideal Role: Slot receiver

Scheme Fit: Vertical passing attack

Prospect Comparison: Markus Wheaton (2013 NFL Draft)

TDN Consensus Grade: 74.00/100 (Fourth-Round Value)

  • Crabbs Grade: 74.00/100

Yes and yes. He went undrafted in a dynasty league and I added him last week. He’s value play Jamo.

I will one up you. He went undrafted in multiple of my dynasty leagues and in one of them I have already picked him up and dropped him.

Too much competition for targets and i expect terrible QB play.

Terrible QB play for how long?

Good chance he’s getting slot reps at some point in 2023. Gage has already had lingering hamstring issues in camp.

Well I use some of my roster spots for the future. I don’t need to play him this year. Sure he’s probably a total zero but he is certainly worth a look.

Right, they could literally bottom out this year and have Caleb Williams next year or go after Cousins or make a crazy trade for Kyler. The NFL is too unpredictable to just right write off a team for their QB situation in dynasty.

Would seem pretty short-sighted to be dropping him in a dynasty for "terrible QB play" if you have the space. Not to mention he had 4 catches and a TD from Mayfield in the first half the other night.

Gage is probably gone after this year. Evans is a free agent also, but I expect he'll sign an extension. He's 29 and entering his 10th season though, so he's only got a few years left. Godwin has this year and next on his deal before he's a free agent again. Decent enough chance Palmer is their WR3 at minimum here very soon with an inside track to much more if his talent plays.

There are many reasons I cut him, he has low draft capital, and in my two dynasty leagues with current open waivers I would rather take flyers at the RB in one of them and DE in the other one.

If he is still available after I know more about my 4 rookie DE's, then i will grab him.

Right, always depends on who is available of course.

#Bucs WR Russell Gage is taken off the field on a cart with support from the training staff. He was not putting weight on his leg and it does not look good.

Man, I hate being right. Put Palmer on your radar.

Russell Gage (knee) is out for the 2023 season.

Gage went down with a non-contact injury during Wednesday’s scrimmage against the Jets. The 27-year-old slot man will miss the entire 2023 season after taking a pay cut this offseason to remain with the Bucs. Trey Palmer or Deven Thompkins are candidates to emerge as Tampa’s No. 3 receiver behind Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

Looks like the #3 WR to me, as I don't see TB doing something like bringing back Julio or whatever in light of Gage's season ending injury.

Not a bad 4th round rookie pick.

He’s been shredding the Bucs corners (the starters are very good) and he ripped past Sauce yesterday. Seems like these camp stories rarely work out but as a Bucs fan I certainly hope this does. He looks special. Scored a TD with the starters the other night too.

Trey Palmer caught his only target for 33 yards and a touchdown in the Bucs’ preseason game against the Jets.
Palmer ran with the first team again this week, though the Bucs have let Mike Evans and Chris Godwin sit out both of their preseason games so far, giving extra reps to the backups. With Russell Gage sidelined for the 2023 season, the WR3 gig in Tampa Bay is up for grabs and Palmer has made his case so far. He is up to five catches for 66 yards and two scores in the preseason. He will be a name to watch if he can secure the final starting spot in the Bucs’ receiver rotation before Week 1.

Trey Palmer caught 2-of-3 targets for eight yards and a touchdown in the Buccaneers’ Week 1 win over the Vikings.

The rookie Trey Palmer caught a touchdown in the second half of the Buccaneers’ victory in Week 1. He saw three total targets, but has a chance to establish himself as the team’s WR3. Palmer looks to build upon his debut in Week 2 against the Bears.

starting to think he's a GREAT flyer in late rounds, especially if Evans leaves.
He is for sure. Maybe it's just Rashid Shaheed type player but that's got value given where you were able to get Palmer in drafts or off the waiver pile. I've called him discount Jamo.

I liked him a lot coming out of college. I didn't think he was a 1st or 2nd rounder, but I didn't think he was a 6th rounder either.

That said, I didn't think Rashee Rice would be a good fantasy receiver, so what do I really know?

I traded him for Jake Browning in my run to another title that came up just short. He was the most expendable of my receivers, I figured.

I traded him instead of Demario Douglas, Andrei Iosivas, and a few others. Time will tell. You'll do a lot of suspect things when that title is just sitting there waiting to be won.

If you needed Browning, it makes sense. The odds are still very much against Palmer.

I needed a backup to Mahomes because I have and had nothing to back him up with. I drafted Zach Wilson at 2.11 of a rookie draft years ago and needed to upgrade the backup, so I traded Isaiah Spiller for Ryan Tannehill. Once Tannehill got replaced, I had no real backup. I forget who I started on bye in Week Ten this year. Oh yeah, Mac Jones, who I'd acquired as a piece in a trade for Alvin Kamara. I traded a first rounder for Kamara and Jones, essentially. Oh, and I gave up Roschon Johnson, too, which was stupid. But it's been a neglected part of a 1QB team with only so many draft picks, needs, and resources.
