Vegas (1 Viewer)

I've owned two weeks at the Jockey Club for the last 10 years. The downturn in 2008 was during the same time that Cosmo was being built. People that owned units at the Jockey Club were finding out the every south facing room was going to have a wall 10 feet outside the window. I did my homework and visited the Jockey Club during one of my trips. I asked for a map of the rooms and they even gave me a key card to go check out one of the rooms. I paid $100 (plus $300 closing/title transfer for the first) and $1 plus closing fees on the second. This gives me 14 days each year. My rooms are on the Bellagio side. If I want to keep my assigned week, I can stay in my exact unit (facing the fountains). One is in April, the other is early November. I do have to pay maintenance fees yearly on each unit which comes out to $80 per night. I don't mind paying the fees, as they seem to spend the money on upgrades every year. They redo bedding, flooring, etc every couple of years. Just finished replacing all the flooring last year and are currently upgrading 4 elevators.

The jockey club is tucked in between Cosmo and Bellagio. There's no casino and not much else to do on the property. They have a pool, but it's covered by a large net to keep things that people throw off the Cosmo balconies from landing on you. They have a small workout area and bbq grills you can use by the pool. The have an onsite convenience store that's a little overpriced, but convenient. (there's also a Walgreens across the street by Planet Hollywood. They have free popcorn and movie check outs if you want to take a break. Oh and free donuts and coffee on Friday mornings. The rooms are a one bedroom studios or two bedroom units with full kitchens and living rooms. They do limit 4 people to a studio (including kids). And they have washer and dryer units on every other floor. I've checked out a movie and done laundry while I wait for my clothes to finish.

The location can't be beat. They have their own elevators off the pool that accesses the Cosmo casino floor. From my room, I can get to Cosmo in 2 minutes. Planet Hollywood in 3-4 minutes. Bellagio in about 5 minutes. As jvdesigns mentioned, I can buy a case of water and keep it cold in the fridge. If I buy a meal at a restaurant, I will usually upgrade to a larger size and keep the extras in fridge for later or the next day.

We just spent last weekend at Mandalay Bay (it was paid by for by a Vendor we do business with). The experience was frustrating. Even though we were able to upgrade to a suite (check in system was down and we had to wait an hour to check in). The room was nice, but no larger than what I was used to at the Jockey Club. We couldn't touch the fridge without incurring a charge. Food options were good, but expensive. I bought a bottle of water on my way to the room Sunday night and it cost me $6!!!  Due to our late return flight, I looked at paying for an extra night. They wanted $250!! No thanks.

Buck - Jockey Club has a website that you can use to book, even if you aren't an owner. I just checked a 3 night stay in April. Average room price is $105-$135. This is the one negative I have as an owner. They hold rooms for outside bookings. There have been times that I've tried to extend my stay and they say that they have no rooms available. Even though I can go their website and book a room that way. Ultimately, they end up not booking all the rooms and I've been able to extend my stay. Just seems like an odd process.
Nice!!

This has likely been covered upthread but what is the best way to look into booking the types of rooms you mention?

Thanks for all the info!
I personally am lucky enough to have an acquaintance who have a ton of points at Wyndham timeshares.  For example--in November I was able to book 17 2-bedroom deluxe suites at the Grand Desert for my 40th birthday party.   The key to getting the rooms for the dates that you want is to book 2 months ahead of time.   You can always PM me if you want to look into a room for you.

Aside from that--there are agencies that sell reservations for timeshare properties.  Many of them even list them on ebay. If you do a search for "Vegas" and filter the results to only show "Lodging" under the "travel" category--you will see lots of them.

Been to Vegas about 30x but never downtown.  :bag:

Tired of $25 minimum craps on the strip at night. Where’s the most fun to go downtown for low limit craps and a good vibe with a group after a killer steak at Charlie Palmers?

First of all, it's all low limit downtown. (Not really, but everyone has $5-$10 craps, even on the weekends.)

Vibe is an individual thing, but I've heard lots of whooping and hollering in the Four Queens pit. Also, wander one block off Fremont to the California. They have a Golden Arm Wall of Fame that you can join, if you can hold the dice for an hour.

Golden Gate is kinda known for having some of the best craps dealers in Vegas. Limits are usually $5-10.

I really enjoying gambling at GG and the D, looking forward to when Circa is complete. We'll probably stay downtown for the first time once it is.

Is Slots of Fun still open? It's way North Strip, but they used to have a fun craps table right by the sidewalk. It was always either $1,$3 or $5. Yeah, it's a dive. But, that was part of the fun.

The last time I was there it was still open--but it's not what it used to be.  I believe it's part of Circus Circus--and it definitely used to be an energy filled casino back in the day.  Now--it's basically a ghost town with penny machines and a few pool tables.  My guess is that in time they will make an effort to bring some some excitement back in there.  The North part of the strip is starting to undergo some  major gentrification.

Can confirm that craps dealers at GG are awesome.  Great sense of humor.

Is downtown Vegas walkable or do you need a car?  One of the few things on the strip I like is the ability to get from casino to casino quickly and cheaply

10 year anniversary trip over labor day weekend this year.

Wife narrowed down hotels to Delano and cosmopolitan.

Shows to ka and opium.

Also wants to go-to one of those house music dj pool parties.

Never been to Vegas on s super busy weekend like this, any thoughts?

You should be alerted that the rideshare companies are not the only folks implementing surge pricing. Venues of all types are looking to maximize profit, and there were reports of Caesars adding $2 to drinks across all properties this weekend for March Madness. This nickle-and-diming is going to bite them in the ### eventually.

Anyway, it's your 10th anniversary, so spend the money. The pool parties will be crowded, and unless your wife is 24 or something, she'll tire of it relatively quickly, I suspect.

Opium is from the madmen who created Absinthe, and might be even dirtier and weirder. But I think everyone who liked Absinthe won't be offended.

We enjoyed absinthe.

I'm definitely aware I'm going to get pwned by surge pricing, i don't have a choice when i can get grandparents to watch the kids and when the anniversary falls.   So I'll just pay.   Wife is 34 not 24.

Is cosmopolitan still a hip trendy place for the young?   If so I'd rather do Mandalay

Sorta, but mid-30s is definitely not too old for Cosmo either. I definitely am too old, but I'll play video poker at the first-floor Chandelier Bar every trip, because it's the prettiest place to gamble that I'm allowed in  :lmao:

I'll be there at the same time GB!

Do you guys have the stadium seating or do you sit at a table? I've been there twice for UFC fights and both times we had a table and it was great. But the stadium seating looks awesome.
We got the stadium seating... 2nd row, enough couch space for 7-8 guys.  We were there from 9:15am until the last game was over.   It was awesome indeed.

Delano is awesome - the rooms are great with floor to ceiling windows and great views. Pretty sure it’s rhe Four Seasons now. Lots to do in the casino. But, it’s at the far end of the strip and really hard to walk anywhere.

Cosmo is a bit “hoity-toity” for me, but some people like it. The rooms there are awesome too - make sure to get a balcony room with a view of the bellagio fountains. Location is WAY better because you can walk almost anywhere from there.

Make sure you get out and walk the strip as far as you can. All kinds of characters a on those busy weekends. And, as stated earlier, get downtown for a night. It’s a blast.

I can’t help with the pool/DJ thing. That’s further down my list of things to do than a hot burning sword shoved up my ###.

Did my first March madness trip this past weekend. Not a fan. Wayyyyy too many people. Couldn't get on a table, and moderate places like Paris and PH were spreading mostly $50 min games... Hell even the Fremont craps tables were $15. Getting anywhere was a huge hassle with the masses everywhere. Probably not doing that again

on a happy note, I cashed my first poker tournament at the Wynn, which was pretty awesome. I finished 10th out of about 160 for a $600 score. The $1k payouts were 3 or 4 ahead of me...ah....

I think it depends on what kind of trip you want. If you want to relax then Delano (or Vdara) might be the way to go. If you want to be in the middle of the action then Cosmo.

Cosmo is by far our favorite property due to the balconies with fountain views, slot selection, food options, customer service and location.

I felt the same when I went for the Super Bowl this year. Loved the atmosphere but wasn't comfortable with the table game limits. Probably won't do that again.

Nice job on the tourney run!

Big fan of Vdara.   It’s like an oasis in the middle of everything.  Staying there for the 3rd time in October.

That's of the things that gives me pause for going over labor day weekend.  Extreme crowds and table limits.  But the time i have is what i have

$50 minimum on craps is crazy.

I asked the craps pit boss at Caesars last year to open a $10 table when they all were switching to $25 at night. I told him it’s hard to teach clients or friends the game at higher limits. He agreed. If they want to cultivate new players and not intimidate them straight away, let them get some action going. Gives a good mix to a game and many will play higher anyway plus those leveling up.

That's awesome.  Congrats.

I did my first live tourney at the Borgata in AC last week ($230 monster stack).  After about 6 hours of play, I was knocked out at 40 something and paid spots started at 18th.  I'll do another tourney someday but I think I know now that cash games are more my thing.  I hate being tied up for that long in a tourney.

I've never been in Vegas over labor day but I know it's a busy weekend. Not sure is it's SB/MM busy though so maybe it won't be quite as bad at the tables. Cromwell is usually pretty good about offering lower limits which is where we tend to play since they have some of our favorite dealers and the drink service is almost always great.

If you're not worried about comps you can always try hitting up the mid strip CET properties (Bally's/Cromwell/Flamingo) to get some table game action.

Exactly on point!

I was trying to teach some friends at Aria - after 5-6 straight slaughterhouse rolls my friends bailed we should have just handed the dealer 1K when we came to the table and walked away. Never even handled the dice. No fun whatsoever.

We are having our FF draft this year in Vegas for the first time. Any ideas on a good place to hold a draft for 12 guys? I'm thinking about just renting a conference room at one of the hotels, but wanted to see what kind of ideas you guys had.

Also, we are planning a dinner for about 25 people - everyone will want good food but they won't want to spend an arm and a leg. Suggestions?

I don't know if it would work at the Flamingo. Rooms already are so cheap and complimentary rooms may make it even tougher. Still worth a shot. If they can't do anything they'll say they can't accept tips or something like that and slide the money back to you. The newer places seem to have no issue with the front desk staff accepting tips but the older places sometimes do. Look for the youngest, happiest looking person at the desk and go right to them.

This guy did the $20 trick at Flamingo and got a Go room but didn't get resort fees waived.
Update - I checked in today and did the $20 trick.  I was upgraded from a standard GO room to an executive room.  The view isn’t great but it’s a 100 square feet larger. No offers to remove the resort fee.  But I have a complimentary stay so it’s cool.  Only downside is that my room is an absolute hike from the elevator.  The exercise is good but I just want to gamble!

ETA - I mentioned to the lady that we are celebrating my buddy’s 50th birthday (complete lie) but I don’t think she cared.

Anyone ever play poker at Golden Nugget?  If you’re willing to gamble and accept variability, this is the place to play.  Never seen anything like it.
