Vegas just isn’t fun anymore…. (1 Viewer)

We are a group that goes out for the national bowling tournament.
The Military Bowling tourney in August? I will be there for that. Been there the last few years. It's awesome. Southpoint is great for that and has enough you never have to leave the area. All the restaurants are good and enough variety that you don't get bored.
Say what now? How did I not know of this potential boondogle :wall:
It's a huge tourney that goes basically for the month of August. It's in different flights and your team bowls for three days. Half of your team must be active, retired, reserved military (so 2 of 4 players) nad it's a handicap based tournament. It's a ton of fun and you can win decent money. My first year I ended up winning $2500 between, team, doubles, singles, and overall.

High Roller Military Bowling Tourney
ZOMG, I looked it up and it looks the team can be made up of scrubs... I'm definitely looking at 2025 to put a team together for this. Me and another buddy are probably retiring in 2025 so we would be the active and we would bring on 2 more that just retired. Time to start training the liver
It is a handicap tourney so really good bowlers tend to not do very well because they have no room for error. You do have to be in a league and get an official handicap or you go in as a scratch bowler. Min average for women is 130 and for men is 140 (so if you have a 120 average in your league you will be bowling with that min average for this tourney).

They do also look for sandbaggers and will adjust your handicap if you are listed as a 140 and are rolling 220's every single game. They do a pretty good job of monitoring it. My very first year in the tourney I went in with a 143 average based on bowling in my local league with a house ball. I got my own ball at the tournament and used that and I ended up bowling 160-180 most games. Amazing what your own ball does for you. That was the year I won $2500. My average is now up to 165 so I have to bowl really good (for me) to make that type of money again.

Regardless its a great time and most of the bowlers are fun and don't take it too seriously.........although there are a few groups that are overly serious.

This sounds like a great time
It is a tremendous time.

What does this mean? I’m not a gambler, so I don’t even know what 3:2 means, but understand the game of blackjack.

Are you saying you did so well, they asked you to stop playing?
If they think you counting cards, which is not illegal, they can kick you out.

They don't need to let anyone play.
How often does that occur, roughly, and what recourse does the gambler have, if any?

I don't know how often people do it now as the casinos have seemingly all moved to several decks with continuous shuffles going on, so card counting is a lot trickier. If you're looking for a fun read, Bringing Down the House is about a group of MIT students who card counted their way to millions.

Once a card counter is spotted, management will ask them to cash out and leave and will be watching for them to return where they will be uninvited to play. They might even call other casinos to warn them about about a potential card counter in the area. They can't take any winnings, but they can tell you not to ever come back and they can be persuasive in ways other businesses haven't mastered.

I was on a panel at MIT hosted by Jeremy Ma who was part of the Bringing Down The House book/movie. I asked him how long he could be in a big casino like Caesars before being asked to leave. He said, "30 seconds".

:lmao:

I believe it. I think it would be fascinating to learn how the casinos spot the counters.
They watch for people spreading large amounts on their bets (i.e going from one hand of 20 to 2 at 500 and back.) Then they will start counting with the player to see if their spread moves in correlation with the running count (or true count if they're good) and if they're making strategy deviations accordingly as well. Once they've seen enough evidence, they'll send someone to back the player off. That's what started team play like MIT, they'd have a counter signal in a big player when the shoe was hot. Casinos are wise to that now, but it's still harder to detect.

Whether we cheerlead Vegas or tear it down doesn't matter, a thread like this is always going to have legs, because at heart there are just too many middle age guys here who will always romanticize what Vegas represents to them--gambling, good weather, pool time, fun nights out, and mostly just freedom from responsibility for a few days at a time. I know for me personally it's lost some shine with all the changes I've seen over my 25 years of going. Still, if I had more willing buddies ready to go more often, I'd still be there 1-2 times per year. For me Vegas is still like no place else.

So going through TSA at Harry Reid airport this morning was definitely not fun (as if it ever is). No Pre-check until 4:30 am and a huge line at ticketing check-in made for a pretty long wait. Half the scanning machines were down and a bunch of people’s stuff had to get rescanned. Had to take off my shoes like some kind of savage too.

OTOH, had a blast in Vegas. Saw Penn and Teller, Ministry, visited Lake Mead, and spent time with my family. It absolutely was fun until I got to the airport this morning.

Been to vegas three times this year. Going again next weekend and in May again.

Paris rooms were terrible. Needs a renovation stat.

Prices have definitely gone up, but obviously still love it or wouldnt be going back.

We took my daughter on this most recent trip. Stayed at Encore. I surprised my wife and her with tickets to Spice Wannabe. Went to lake mead area twice.

Anniversary Narrows(has been closed for like ten years but now open) and owl canyon are great easy hikes. Seeing a huge sleeping/resting owl was pretty cool. Did a little rockhounding at the ore mine site.

Gonzalez y gonzalez chips and salsa to go remains a great value. 4.95 and you get two big things of salsa and tons of chips. We like to sit in the streets of new york area and grab food from nearby spots. Was sad to see they dont have croughnuts anymore at American. Now its Cruffins. Did not buy.

Just got back from Vegas - was my wife's first time, also took our 15 year old son.

We had a great time, although the gluttony gets to be a bit much.

We stayed at the Cosmopolitan - got a room that overlooked the Bellagio fountains and it was awesome. Hotel itself has a sex heavy vibe but done in a tasteful and modern way. Cosmo was perfectly located, although you Vegas vets probably already know that.

We just focused on the city proper and will do a nature based trip likely next year.

Observations:

Lard, Hidden Pizza, Momofuku and Eggslut were all awesome at the Cosmo. We didn't even touch China Poblano or Superfrico which are both also supposed to be great. Tough to beat the selections of restaurants/food court there.

We also enjoyed Din Thai Fung at the Aria, and Ferraro's was out of the way but well worth it. Possibly best service I've ever had and the Italian was top notch.

The Walgreens across the street was a 2 min walk and money for snacks/water for the room.

Entertainment:

The sphere was a neat experience but not for the money. We also didn't like how the movie had some political and anti religious connotations. Would not recommend, or if you do go get the cheaper seats.

The mob museum was great and well worth it. Fremont Street is totally ghetto. I was there at 2 pm and was on high alert with wife and kid nearby. If it was just me or me and a group of dudes I'd probably be fine. Pink Donuts at the end of Fremont were fantastic though. It was worth the 1 hour visit especially being right next to the mob museum.

The Arte Museum was kinda neat and good for photos. It killed a couple hours in the morning and it was right next to the Cosmo. Maybe a little pricey for the experience but I was okay with it.

Saw Ka and Love - Ka was kinda strange but cool. My son loved it but I found it hard to vibe with. Love was amazing and 11/10 experience for both my wife and I. Also I've previously seen the Michael Jackson Cirque and that is also well worth it.

My 2 cents on Vegas with the family and from a non gambler. I bet a grand total of $6 while there.

Cheers!

One major issue for Vegas bargain hunters.

There's pro sports teams there now. And the A's are about to add 81 more days when something is going on. Insert A's joke here.

But a constant favorite thing about Vegas for me is cheap hotel rooms, at Really Nice Hotels. That has been a big difference for me. Hotels are a LOT more expensive than a few years ago. I'm talking about the top hotels. Aria, Wynn, Cosmo. Venetian maybe the bottom of this tier.

With the arrival of the Raiders, Knights, A's, Aces it's like adding in 100+ small conventions every year.

Tough to find that quiet weekend when prices dip. There's always an event

Ministry was one of the best live shows I've ever seen. 1992 New Orleans Lala Palooza 2. Stole the show. Surprised Al is still kicking....he liked his drugs.

Curious if your room at Circa seemed quieter? Did you notice the soundproofing at all?

Pretty sure he still does

I still heard a little thumping bass, but it was way quieter. I had a corner suite on the 31st floor facing the mountains to the west so on the opposite side of Stadium Swim. I will say the music in the lobby/casino is loud af. All the hotel floors are very quiet

There's also the weird thing that I've never liked about Las Vegas in the encouraging you to be something there you're not normally. The whole, "What happens in Vegas.."

That's always seemed sad to me. If you truly want to do something, I'd hope you could do it where you live. Not have to come to some "other" place where it'll be a secret
You cannot do Vegas at home.

There's more than one Vegas, but pools plus nightlife plus hotels under one roof, with that many like minded people in town, every weekend?

You cannot find that anywhere else. Vegas, as a party destination, is unique. There's only one

Sorry I wasn't clear.

For sure, Las Vegas has entertainment opportunities that many people don't have at home.

I'm saying be the kind of person you want to be.

If you're the kind of person that wants to be wild or outgoing or creative or a zillion other things, I'm saying you can be those things at home.

You don't need permission.

Where much of the undertone marketing for Las Vegas is it's giving you the permission to be the things you want to be.
I get what you’re saying, but some things are better in small doses. 50 weeks of the year I’m content to live the normal Midwest dad life.

I go about twice a year to Vegas now and drink, eat, gamble way too much with my friends. I have a blast, but I don’t have interest in living that way full time nor would my health allow it. I also would be a terrible dad if I lived like that at home.

I think being someone different on vacation can help achieve life balance. It doesn’t necessarily mean you aren’t happy and it doesn’t mean you should ditch your kids and try to become a pro gambler.

The lobby casino music is fning annoying...loud as ****...also extends to parking valet garage !!!!

While more expensive, Vegas - still fun. It was unseasonably cold on the back-end of the trip, so I'm glad we only did 3 days. With good pool and golf weather 4 days is about perfect. Alternate each during the day, downtown one night, dinner & a show another, then sportsbook, and big dinner out to finish the trip. Not a budget breaking trip either as pre-gambling we weren't much over a grand per day including flight & hotel.

If the Browns game this fall works schedule-wise I'm going to price out Thu-Sun with some buddies and see if it works.

Hope you have a great time.

But Aria and Fontainebleau are my least favorite casinos on the strip. I'm much more of a Cosmopolitan if going upscale or better yet, some place downtown if getting dirty. I did like The D last time I went... nttawwt.
I am just playing in their poker room every night. We will head out to other places during the day with lower table limits to play craps.

We love their dining, spa and overall vibe. It's our speed.

We learned our last trip in Oct 2023 after not being there since 2015 where we need to go play craps. And those kinda places are not it anymore (unfortunately).

This is what you get for traveling before 4:30am.

The last few years I was traveling back and forth to the St. Louis area a lot, and one trip my boarding pass didn't say Pre-check. I didn't notice until I was in line. My wife had made the reservation, and while she swears she did, she apparently did not add my KTN. I didn't have it on me, so I decided to just suck it up and go through the standard boarding line. First world problems, sure, but I will never fly without Pre-check or something similar again. Got to the airport early on the return trip, KTN in hand, and had them add it (They apparently send a list of the people expected to fly pre-check to the people at screening. I did not know that. I got to the line too quickly and had to wait, as I wasn't yet "on the list")

Traveling east is somewhat limited if you want to get home before midnight

Hot damn there's nothing better than TSA Precheck. Best $75 or whatever I've spent in a long time. I can't tell you how much time it cuts out of waiting in lines, not to mention keeping your shoes/belt/jacket on AND not having to pull all of your electronics out of your bag. A few trips ago, apparently my Southwest boarding pass didn't have my KTN on it, although I swore I had it saved to my profile on SWA, but I just got out of the Precheck line when I got to the TSA kiosk (and he told me to just come directly back to the front of the line) and SWA took care of it at the ticket window, and now it's definitely in my profile. Best thing evah.

Yep. I have Global Entry, but no Pre-Check at 3:30 am at Harry Reid airport

We learned our last trip in Oct 2023 after not being there since 2015 where we need to go play craps.
And where is your spot for craps? That's also my game, although I've lost my butt the last few trips.
We are going to try out Harrahs, South Point and Ellis Island this next trip...during the day.
Go and check out Durango if you're going off strip. I like it there. Didn't throw dice, but enjoyed the book and bars. Prices seemed my speed.

Harrahs is not great IMO. You can find a $15 table there though for sure during the day. I think Linq and O'Sheas next door is $15 all the time. $10 table is much tougher these days on the strip. I think maybe up at Strat, but last time I went it was only crapless, which I hate.

Is there a consensus on the best craps in Vegas? I have yet to find anywhere in Vegas that rivals Shreveport or Lake Charles with $10-15 minimums and 100x odds.

HEY! WATCH IT!!

Hot damn there's nothing better than TSA Precheck.
The only thing better is having Clear when it's actually busy, and having the attendant remove the rope so you can cut in front of TSA Precheck.
I fly into some pretty tiny airports a lot of times where there isn't the Clear option. There's always the TSA Precheck option, even at an airport like Pierre, SD ... where there is 1 gate. Even at a bigger airport where there's Clear & TSA Precheck, I see hardly any difference timing-wise between the two. Maybe at giant airports back east? Never seen it at the airports I frequent.

Clear is always shorter at slc

I have both Clear and Global Entry (several travel related cards credit the fees) and it’s not always the case that there’s much of a difference. But when it is, it’s glorious. I’m in Phoenix and it happens on occasion.
