TE Logan Thomas, Free Agent (4 Viewers)

Greg Cosell is high on multiple Washington players entering the 2021 season  - September 8

Excerpt:

Finally, Cosell spoke about tight end Logan Thomas, and he feels we still haven’t seen the best of the former quarterback.

I think he’ll be an ascending player this year. I think that he’ll be utilized more in the intermediate and vertical passing game, and those, as we said, are foundations of Scott Turner’s offense. He did run some vertical routes; he made tough catches that demanded a wide catch radius and good hands, which obviously, being a former quarterback that was pretty impressive. I think he’ll be more and more involved in this passing game.

Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has seemingly developed a strong rapport with Thomas this summer, and he could be in store for an even bigger season in 2021.

Logan Thomas caught 5-of-7 targets for 45 yards in Washington's Week 2 win over the Giants.

Thomas has been gobbling up snaps but has only 8/75/1 to show for it through two games. Reserve Ricky Seals-Jones managed to haul in a go-ahead fourth quarter touchdown this evening. It stands to reason Thomas' targets will increase as soon as he get comfortable with fill-in QB Taylor Heinicke, who has few other places to go outside of Terry McLaurin. Thomas' snap counts and target upside will keep him in the top 10 at tight end, including for Week 3 against Buffalo.

The impressive thing is he is out there on every play. He certainly makes some tough catches over the middle. But in this offensive system, they like to spread the ball around to the running back (McKissic) and their other WRs (Humphries), so I think this sort of stat line is going to be fairly typical for Thomas this year, with occasional TDs sprinkled in.  He's very valuable to them as a run blocker, although he rarely lines up in the usual TE position - he plays a step or two back off the line typically.

Logan Thomas caught 4-of-4 targets for 42 yards and a touchdown in Washington's Week 3 loss to the Bills.

Thomas caught a 2 yard touchdown pass with the game already decided on a day where Taylor Heinicke only attempted 24 passes; four targets was still good for a 16.7% market share. Thomas remains the same low-end TE1 option he has been for the better part of the past two seasons. He's the second option in Washington's aerial attack with Curtis Samuel sidelined, although J.D. McKissic and Antonio Gibson offer solid competition for low-depth targets. Regardless, start Thomas in Week 4 and beyond.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Logan Thomas (hamstring) is expected to be week-to-week.

Thomas isn't likely to suit up for the Football Team's Week 5 matchup with the Saints. That leaves Ricky Seals-Jones as the only tight end of note on the roster. With Thomas appearing on every offensive snap through the first three weeks, Ricky Seals-Jones earned just 25 snaps over that span. He had one reception before Week 4. Seals-Jones has a handful of spot-starts in his career but isn't the type of player that will make a big impact on a limited Washington offense. There are likely better streaming options at his position this week.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports Washington TE Logan Thomas (hamstring) will return to practice after the team's Week 9 bye.

Thomas' four-week timeline aligns perfectly for his activation in Week 10 against the Bucs. With Ricky Seals-Jones logging 100% of snaps over Washington's last three games, it's possible OC Scott Turner opts for more 12 personnel with Thomas rather than attempting to find a third viable receiver among the team's group of non-impact players. Thomas returns as a fringe-TE1 the moment he's activated.

As bad as they are they could really use 12 players on offense.

Logan Thomas (hamstring, I.R.) was "sore" coming out of Monday's practice, and his status for Week 10 against the Bucs won't be determined until Friday.

Thomas hasn't played since getting injured five snaps into Week 4. He returned to practice earlier this week, opening his 21-day window for activation, but it sounds like he might need to miss at least another week. Ricky Seals-Jones has played 100% of the snaps the last four weeks.

Washington coach Ron Rivera said Logan Thomas (hamstring, IR) is "just not ready to be put on the football field."

Washington has been taking Thomas' status day by day, waiting to see how he bounces back from Monday's work on the sideline. Given Rivera's ominous quote, it seems unlikely Thomas will be activated for Sunday against the Bucs. Managers can start Ricky Seals-Jones for one more week since he's played every offensive snap in place of Thomas this year.

Logan Thomas (hamstring, IR) did not return to practice Wednesday.

Washington announced that they were opening CB Darryl Roberts' 21-day practice window. They notably did not do the same for Thomas. Thomas was believed to have a shot to play in Week 10 but did not practice last week. With Ricky Seals-Jones now day-to-day with a hip injury, Thomas' continued absence puts his Week 11 availability in doubt. If Thomas and Seals-Jones are unable to suit up, it would leave John Bates as Washington's every-down tight end.

Logan Thomas (hamstring, injured reserve) remained sidelined on Thursday.

Thomas appears to have no shot at returning from I.R. this week, which is bad news since Ricky Seals-Jones (hip) also isn't practicing. Someone named "John Bates" is the next man up. A fourth-round rookie, Bates did manage three receptions for 25 yards in Week 10, and could have some last-ditch TE2 appeal for this targets-needy team.

Logan Thomas (hamstring) is expected to return to practice this week.

The Football Team could activate Thomas at any point in a 21-day window, starting today. That means he's no guarantee to play this week against the Seahawks. Meanwhile, Ricky Seals-Jones (hip) is a major question for Week 12, leaving John Bates as the starter if both RSJ and Thomas are sidelined. Thomas, who's been on injured reserve for six weeks, would be a plug-and-play fantasy starter if he can go against Seattle.

Any more news on him? Picked him up off waivers to fill in for Kelce’s bye, but the Monday game has me feeling nervous.

The Washington Football Team, on a two-game winning streak, should have additional offensive help available Monday night vs. Seattle as tight end Logan Thomas and receiver Curtis Samuel are expected to play, barring a last minute-change in their health.

Samuel is listed as questionable; Thomas remains on injured reserve but the expectation is that he'll be activated in time to play Monday. Both would be limited to a snap count coach Ron Rivera said, though Thomas likely would play more than Samuel.

Looks like he'll play, but not 100% of snaps as he usually does. I'm guessing around 60-70%. I think they are pretty confident he's healed up.

Are there any updates? I have to decide whether or not to go with him or Gerald Everett tonight.

The #washingtonfootball  Team will officially add TE Logan Thomas back to the active roster in the next hour. He and WR Curtis Samuel are on track to play tonight, as expected. Ron Rivera said both would be on pitch counts if they played vs. the #Seahawks .

Logan Thomas caught 3-of-6 targets for 31 yards in Washington's Week 12 win over the Seahawks.

Thomas' six targets were a close third on the team behind both Terry McLaurin and Antonio Gibson, who each saw seven looks. This was Thomas' first game back from a seven-week hamstring injury that had him on I.R. until Monday afternoon. Thomas had a four-yard touchdown called back late in the fourth quarter, though it looked like he actually had enough control of the ball to keep it a score. A favorite of Taylor Heinicke's in the red zone, Thomas will be a TE1 next week against the Raiders in Vegas.

when he's played he's been fairly consistent, last night was no different 4-7 targets, 30 yards and a decent chance at a TD. will likely be starting him over gestinky this week

Washington TE Logan Thomas (knee) is “ahead of schedule” in his recovery from ACL surgery.

Thomas was cleared to start jogging at four months removed from tearing his ACL. Washington plans to move him slowly, likely holding Thomas out of OTAs, but there’s a chance he gets in some training camp reps. Thomas will need to avoid setbacks to have a chance to be ready for Week 1.

Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said he hopes Logan Thomas (knee) can be ready for Week 1.

Thomas suffered a catastrophic knee injury last December, tearing his MCL, ACL, and meniscus. Rivera said the team would "play it by ear" with Thomas' recovery, but would not commit to having his starting tight end ready to roll for the regular season's kickoff. That would leave John Bates as Washington's top pass-catching tight end. Rivera described Bates -- who was serviceable as a streaming option late last season -- as "a ten-year vet in a two-year vet's body." Thomas, entering his age-31 season, is being drafted as the 21st tight end off the draft board.

Any Washington Commander homies in here?

What are the odds Logan is ready week 1?

What are the odds he can be a top 10 tight end with Wentz? Wentz likes his tight ends traditionally.

Logan Thomas (knee) said he's unsure about his Week 1 status.

Thomas, coming back from a horrific knee injury in 2021, said his knee feels good after being removed from the active/PUP list two weeks ago. ESPN's John Keim reported last week that Thomas would likely make his season debut by Week 2 "at the latest." Of course, Thomas could be active but limited in Washington's season opener against the Jaguars. He doesn't need to be rostered in typical 12-team leagues yet. John Bates will operate as the team's No. 1 tight end if Thomas is sidelined.

ESPN’s John Keim reports Logan Thomas (knee, questionable) is “ready to go” for Sunday’s opener against the Jaguars.

Thomas appears set to return to game action after avoiding any setbacks in his recovery from a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus suffered in December. Fantasy's PPR TE4 in 2020 returns to more competition for targets and a potential snap count but it is a welcome development for the Commanders, nonetheless. Although a low-end TE2 for Week 1, Thomas could be a popular waiver wire target heading into next week.

Commanders TE Logan Thomas (knee) is active for Week 1 against the Jaguars.

Thomas has been trending up for the last several weeks and is officially active for Sunday's Week 1 matchup. The veteran tight end should be a reliable target for Carson Wentz this season but is a risky TE2 heading into this one. The Commanders ruled out QB Sam Howell, S Kam Curl, CB Tariq Castro-Fields, G Chris Paul and TE Cole Turner.

Logan Thomas caught 3-of-6 targets for 45 yards in the Commanders' Week 1 win over the Jaguars.

Thomas worked his way back to the field this offseason after suffering a torn ACL last December. The veteran tight end finished with the third-most targets on the day, while averaging an impressive 15.0 yards per reception. Thomas' longest play came on a 27-yard pass in the fourth quarter that setup a 49-yard touchdown pass to Terry McLaurin on the following play. Late in the fourth quarter, Carson Wentz would find Thomas again, this time on a 14-yard pass to convert a third down, on what would prove to be the game-winning drive for the Commanders. Thomas should have some streaming upside in next week's game against the Lions.

Logan Thomas caught 3-of-5 targets for 37 yards and one touchdown in the Commanders' Week 2 loss to the Lions.

Thomas was missed high on a Carson Wentz pass in the third quarter, which resulted in Wentz's lone interception on the afternoon, but the Commanders would rebound on the following drive. On the ensuing drive, Wentz and the Commanders would drive down the field on several big plays, with Thomas ending the drive on a 20-yard score. Thomas has looked healthy through two games after his 2021 ended with a torn ACL. He's seen 11 targets on the season but is nothing more than a streaming option next week against the Eagles.

Logan Thomas (calf) did not practice on Tuesday.

A limited estimate on Monday, this downgrade portends poorly for Thomas' chances of playing on Thursday night. He also sat out Week 5 against the Titans. John Bates and Cole Turner split six targets evenly against Tennessee and neither would make a particularly intriguing play against the Bears in Week 6 if Thomas sits.

Washington TE Logan Thomas (calf) was removed from the Week 9 injury report.

Washington cleared Thomas, who they listed as questionable in Week 8, after a full practice on Friday. Catchless in his return from a three-game absence, Thomas could see a larger role after running a route on 20 of Washington's 39 drop backs while playing over 50% of snaps last week. The Vikings have allowed the 11th-most yards per game and sixth-most touchdowns to tight ends this year.

Need a bye week fill in and not much out there. Hard to trust a guy that had zero targets the previous week though. Picked up Moreau but will grab Thomas if Waller is active since the Vikings haven't been good against the position this year.

Logan Thomas was not targeted in the Commanders' Week 9 loss to the Vikings.

Thomas has now gone catchless in two straight games. Thomas hasn't recorded a reception since Week 4 against the Cowboys. He is not a fantasy option going forward.

- NBCSportsEDGE

Logan Thomas is yet another example of Washington hanging on to an oft-injured player and making him a part of their plans for the next years. He has little value on the field or in fantasy, and he won't in the future unless 1) he suddenly doesn't get injured any more and 2) there's a different offensive coaching staff.

The Washington Times believes TE Logan Thomas could be released this offseason.

A calf injury limited Thomas to 14 games after returning from 2021 ACL surgery. Thomas was an afterthought in ex-OC Scott Turner's offense when healthy this year, posting a 39/323/1 line with just eight red-zone targets. Thomas has Washington’s 10th-highest cap hit next season at $8.6 million and the Commanders can save $5.2 million from cutting him, putting heat on his roster spot this offseason. Washington has John Bates and 2022 fifth-rounder Cole Turner behind Thomas.

Commanders senior writer Zach Selby writes, "It looks like Washington's tight ends are going to be heavily involved in the passing game this season."

This is based on Selby's observations at Washington's mandatory minicamp, which officially wrapped up on Wednesday. Selby notes it would be "a tall order" for offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy to replicate the production he enjoyed with Travis Kelce during his time with the Chiefs, but that based on the number of targets the tight ends were seeing at minicamp, it's apparent Bieniemy hopes to utilize his new tight ends in Washington. Logan Thomas, who turns 32 next month, is considered the favorite to land the Commanders' TE1 job heading into camp, but second-year tight end and former wide receiver Cole Turner could threaten for some of that workload. With all of Washington's tight ends currently going late in drafts, it's possible the starter in this offense returns some fantasy value, although expectations should be tempered.

I would expect Logan Thomas to start, but Cole Turner to be a bigger part of the offense. As much as I love me some VT and Logan Thomas ... the FF pick is Cole Turner.
There probably isn't a FF pick in general.

If Bieniemy thinks that even a combination of TEs can do even close to what Kelce does, this offense is gonna be even worse than last season. The talent is at WR and maybe RB.

Players like Thomas are in TE wasteland for fantasy, whether they start or not. Not sure how he will do with Howell however.

When healthy (and yes that's the big thing) Logan Thomas is a REALLY good TE. Makes difficult catches look easy and runs very well. He and Turner are great late round flyers IMO.

Commanders HC Ron Rivera said the team is using “caution” with veteran TE Logan Thomas (calf).

Thomas has been sidelined with a calf injury for the past week, but Rivera didn’t sound too concerned when asked about the status of his veteran tight end. When asked about Thomas, Rivera said, “At this point, this is caution. He’s a little older, veteran guy, a guy that’s coming back, and we just want to be careful with him. Maybe we’re being overly cautious, but at the end of the day, the most important thing is the guy’s ready to play when we open the season.” Second-year tight end Cole Turner has been impressing during Thomas’ absence, but it doesn’t sound like this injury is anything to be too concerned about.
