Roster size

NOTE: rosters are capped at 3 players for any given team.

Group stage:

2 Goalkeepers

6 Defenders

6 Midfielders

4 Strikers

NO BENCH PLAYERS

Knockout stage rosters:

1 Goalkeeper

4 Defenders

4 Midfielders

2 Strikers

NO BENCH PLAYERS

If the knockout stage begins and your team has more than 11 players, you must choose to release as many players as needed to get to 11. This must be done BEFORE the waiver period.

Players eligibility will be determined by ESPN Soccernet - link. Click on "Squad" to look at the players on any given team. However they are listed in that link is how they will be listed in the World Cup.

Waivers

There will be 1 waiver period - between the finish of Group H's group stage and the beginning of the knockout stage. This means that the official waiver period will be from: 6/25/10 at 7 PM eastern (to give myself time to process moves) and 6/26/10 at 9:30 AM.

Waivers will work as follows:

Every team will be allowed a maximum of 3 transfers (see below for exception). Your roster MUST be 11 players in the positions specified above at the end of the waiver period. ALL CUTS must be performed before 7 PM on 6/25, so that everyone knows the full pool of who is available. I realize that the cuts may be contingent on the games played on 6/25, contingent moves are ok. Plus, you have until 7 PM to get your cuts in.

You cannot cut a number of players to get your team below 8 players (again, see below for exception). Say, for example, that your team has 10 players who qualify for the knockouts. Let's say that you don't want 1 of them - you cut that player to give you 9 players. You are eligible for 2 pickups. Example 2 - say your team has 13 players who qualify for the knockouts - you MUST cut 2 players. You can cut up to 5 if you want to be eligible for waivers. If you do not submit your cuts before 7 PM on 6/25, your two lowest-performing players will be automatically released - assuming it keeps a full squad for you for the next round. You will not be eligible for waivers.

If your team has 9 players going into the knockout round, you CANNOT cut 2 players to give yourself 7 players and 4 waiver pickups.

Waivers will be processed worst-to-first for every waiver round. Last place will get the first crack at the beginning of every waiver round.

Special rule: If a team has less than 8 players heading into the knockout round, there will be extra waiver rounds instituted for that person to pick up more players. The extra waiver rounds will be at the END of the 3 rounds.

I would like to do it if we do a board draft and I would also like to help you do the scoring if we can't find a fantasy site that helps us.

IN! I can get more peeps if needed. Actually give me two spots right now as my portugese bro will want in for sure.

Yes, there would be a draft. That's why we're not using one of the many websites out there, those are all "salary cap" style.

Slow draft?

Count me IN

Prefer to play for between 10-50 dollars. Just my vote.

Looking forward to it guys.

The biggest discussion Tasker and I had was about how the rosters would change once the knockout stages started.

We dont want people to shy away from studs on bad teams cause they will most likely only play 3 games, but we arent sure how the logisitics of that would work.

Group Play ends about 4:30 ET on June 25th, and the knockout stages start the next day bright and early.

If the rosters shrink from 2-6-6-4 to 1-4-4-2....maybe most teams could field that lineup without a single "pickup", but who knows.

Could we draft larger rosters and then put in a starting lineup for each phase?

We could field two starting lineups during group and then one during knockout but draft enough for three lineups.

Just throwing out ideas.

Kupcho is out of town until later this week, and he would like to be involved. Still seeking comments about the scoring and rosters, etc. Not sure how to run this as I can't find any real good examples from the past. Draft would have to start this weekend or something most likely.

I would be in for like $20 or $25. Don't really want to play for much more than that.

Only scoring suggestion I have is to raise the point total for defender's and GK's clean sheets. I think a clean sheet for a GK should be at least as much as a goal for a FW.

I guess i'd like to play

I'd be up for a small wager (like $20-$40)

I also think we should raise the points for clean sheets for goalies and probably defenders. Any thoughts to giving negative points for cards or PK's conceded?

ESPN Scoring just to bring up some ideas for scoring

All Players

Starting XI - 2 points

Sub - 1 point

Assist - 2 points

Yellow - minus 1 point

Red - minus 3 points

Penalty Miss - minus 3 points

Own goal - minus 2 points

Keepers

Clean Sheet - 4 points

Goal Conceded - minus 1 point

Goal Scored - 10 points

Penalty Save - 3 points

Every 3 Saves - 1 point

Defender

Clean Sheet - 4 points

Goal Conceded - minus 1 point

Goal Scored - 8 points

Midfield

Clean Sheet - 1 point

Goal Scored - 6 points

Striker

Goal Scored - 4 points

Also, if a GK clean sheet is worth 4, I'd think that a defender should get slightly less (although they arguably do a lot more work to keep the clean sheet).

Should the points for goals scored be different based on position? I say no.

I think all players should get something for a clean sheet, maybe 1-3-5-10 or something similar.

I think a missed penalty kick should be punished. That is a match killer.

If clean sheets for goalies are not upped in some fashion, I think saves should be.

All that said, whatever and I am in.

Have we gotten anywhere on rosters. With 10 teams, we easily could go 3 lineups deep. Could we then draft 3 full lineups and then pick a starting XI for the knockout stage. Should points multiply in the knockout stages?

correct that this is just regulation / OT and that goals, saves, misses, etc. in penalty shootouts don't count?

I honestly dont feel like going 3 lineups deep. Math isn't my strong suit, but wouldnt that basically mean that pretty much every starting player in the tournament (or at least most starting players plus the good backups) would be rostered?

I honestly think we should go with 20-22 man rosters. Maybe allow 1 or 2 FA pickups after the group stage. (go in reverse order of total scoring for the WW priority). If you pick Greece's goalie or defenders (just an example) because you know they're gonna sit with 10 guys behind the ball and probably earn a couple of clean sheets, you should have to fill your lineup with more questionable players if/when Greece doesnt advance to the knockout stages.

Just my opinion of course. I'll go with whatever. I just dont feel like drafting for 30 rounds. Doing research on North Korea's midfielders doesnt seem like a ton of fun for me.

I liked my 18-player roster idea. No substitutes, you get those 18 players for the entire group stage. After the group stage, you need to narrow down your roster to, say 1-4-4-2 with a normal 11 player lineup.

Derek and I discussed this because I'd like to see some people take a chance on players on iffy teams. Not to spotlight, but there's a chance that a great player (ex. Didier Drogba) doesn't make it out of the group stage. This way, teams won't be punished because Drogba is out of the tournament and another team with their mediocre midfielder from a better team happens to float by, picking up bonus points for simply playing in the games.

We would allow worst-to-first waivers at the end of the group stage.

The problem that I can't help but envision, though, is a team just stocks up on average players from a good team like Brazil, and they pull out the win in the end simply because their players play more games. I hate the idea of capping a certain team, but I guess there's a reason that most websites do.

I think expanding to 14 is cool. Plenty of info is available on these guys online if we get deep beyond the guys we know anything about.

What will be the official position reference?

I am already setting up a excel sheet for scoring filling in rosters as they are announced. I will set it up with rosters of each world team, each fantasy team, and create the formulas to fill in the scores for the world teams and have everything else we need appear.

When will the draft be taking place? I may need to bail; I'm on vacation the week before the WC.

I would guess it would start on Tuesday (Memorial Day Monday) and we would have until next Friday. The rosters are finalized on June 1 but not made public until June 4. I am sure that won't matter much aside from possibly injury concerns. We could get deep into it before the week before it starts and you could send a list or something after that. As for money, I am cool with the talked about $20-25. I am wondering though with the quick turnaround if we skip any money simply to avoid any payment issues. I am good either way.

My goal was to start this weekend or Monday/Tuesday. I am holding a spot for Kupcho, who is apparently in China until Friday?

Not sure about giving points to goalies for saves - if others want it, then ok, but I was fine with clean sheet/1 goal allowed points. I'm fine with subtracting points for cards.
