NFL investigating Colts player for possible betting (1 Viewer)

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NFL is investigating an Indianapolis Colts player for possible violations of the league's gambling policy.

The team acknowledged the inquiry Monday, saying in a statement, "We are aware of the NFL's investigation and will have no further comment at this time."

The news comes after a report by sportshandle.com, which cited an investigation into a Colts player's "pervasive" betting, including wagers placed on his own team. The player was not named in the report, nor did team officials reveal his identity.

In April, the NFL suspended five players -- including four from the Detroit Lions -- for gambling policy violations. Lions receiver Quintez Cephus and safety C.J. Moore and Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney were suspended indefinitely for betting on NFL games. Lions receivers Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill received six-game suspensions for betting on non-NFL games from an NFL facility. Cephus, Moore and Berryhill were later released by Detroit.

Last year, then-Atlanta Falcons receiver Calvin Ridley was suspended for the entire 2022 season for betting on NFL games over a five-game stretch when he was away from the team. He was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars at the trading deadline last November and reinstated in March.

Though the NFL has widely embraced sports betting and has sponsorship deals with sportsbooks, the league explicitly prohibits players from betting on NFL games. Players are also prohibited from placing bets while at NFL facilities.

The article says "Although the player is not considered a superstar, an ardent NFL fan has probably heard of him, according to the source." I think that means it wasn't Jonathan Taylor or Michael Pittman.

The player was on the Colts roster last year and is still on the roster, which rules out a bunch of other players including this year's rookie class.

I guess that leaves Alec Pierce & Jelani Woods as the most (non-IDP) fantasy-relevant guys who aren't ruled out yet, along with a whole bunch of guys at other positions.

There was some Adam Schefter impersonator on Twitter saying it was Michael Pittman. Sometimes I really hate Twitter. You can put anything as your "name" and have a Twitter handle that sounds "official" and say whatever you want. Of course after a few seconds' worth of further digging you figure out it was BS, but still....

Jeez, I hope it isn't him. I just traded Pittman for a 2024 1st and if it is Pittman he is going to think I knew, which I don't. I also traded Pittman in another league not much earlier than that, but definitely before any news was broke about a Colts player. Both trades were today, but before this news broke. I hope it is someone they can live without, because if he bet on his own team he will probably get an indefinite suspension.

I withdrew my offers of Pittman for a 1st in another league until we find out who it is. That Schefter impersonator should be banned from Twitter.

Hundreds of wagers, including his own team and at team facilities. Whoever it is will be done for a while...

Now if I only knew which Colts players the "average fan" knows.

Just saw all the bets were placed through an acquaintance.

We putting PIttman in the "superstar" category?

Are we sure it's a skill position guy?

If not, I think most NFL fans know of Leonard or Nelson. Buckner maybe?
