...Hundreds of protesters swarmed a Dearborn Public Schools board meeting on Monday in fierce opposition to books used in class and school libraries that include explicit content of the LGBTQ variety. The titles include This Book is Gay, Flamer, The Lovely Bones, and Push, which go into explicit detail about performing sexual acts and include scenarios of pornography, rape, and incest. The protesters who packed the meeting room held signs that read "Keep your porno to yourself," "Homosexuality Big Sin," and "If democracy matters, we're in the majority."

....Over the past year or so, we've become familiar with scenes of parents protesting school boards over sexually explicit content in schools. But Monday's event featured a new cast: Hundreds of predominantly Arab and Muslim Americans joined their Christian neighbors to oppose the sexually explicit...materials popping up in their kids' public school education....Dearborn is next to Detroit, home to the largest Muslim population in the United States per capita, as well as the largest mosque in the country. Over 300,000 Muslims live in Southeast Michigan—which makes the protest all the more interesting: These aren't Republicans. Dearborn is in Wayne County, which hasn't voted for a Republican president in 94 years—since Herbert Hoover was elected in 1928....

The school board protest was led in large part by Imam Sayed Hassan Al-Qazwini of the Islamic Institute of America in Dearborn Heights. In his Friday sermon last week, he specifically urged his congregants to attend the protest. "Some of those books are completely inappropriate for our children to read," the Imam said. "Some of those books promote pornography. Some of them promote homosexuality. We don't need this. Go and attend this meeting."...Like much of his community, Qazwini is no right-wing ideologue or even a fan of former President Donald Trump, who ran on instituting a Muslim ban. In a 2020 interview, Qazwini told France 24 that Trump has "marginalized Muslims" and "supported white supremacy." "I am not proud to be American under the presidency of a man like Donald Trump," the Imam said....

....But what happens when a minority community—one that is solidly Democratic—feels aggrieved by another identity group of the intersectional Left? That's what we're seeing play out in Dearborn....It's an especially salient question given that peaceful parent protests over these same issues in 2021 were met with the full weight of the U.S. government, which instituted policies treating parents who objected at school board meetings as domestic terrorists....In 2021, when parents around the country began staging protests at school board meetings, the Department of Justice stepped in at the urging of the National School Boards Association (NSBA) by issuing a memo expressing plans to investigate the "increase in harassment, intimidation and threats of violence against school board members, teachers and workers in our nation's public schools." The Justice Department faced backlash over many reports of federal agent presence at school board meetings....The National School Boards Association issued a letter to President Biden (which has since been removed from their website) that labeled parents protesting at school board meetings domestic terrorists and requested federal law enforcement intervention. The Association later retracted and apologized for the letter....

The parent protest in Dearborn raises many interesting questions in a time of pervasive identity politics. How will the DOJ and FBI handle these latest protests now that Muslim and Arab parents are rallying together against allowing sexually explicit materials in schools? Will they be labeled "terrorists" too? Will they be smeared by the corporate media as "right-wing bigots" and "white supremacists"? If so, how will the parents react?

Direct Headline: Christians And Muslims Unite In Michigan To Fight Sexually Explicit Material In School Libraries

By Ryan Saavedra Oct 13, 2022

Protesters brought signs with them that said “Keep your porno books to yourself,” “If democracy matters, we’re the majority,” and “Protect the children,” the last one written in five languages, the Post added....Activist Hassan Aoun said the school district “disrespected” those who attended. He responded by leading chants of “Vote them out!”

The school board responded to the signs by banning protesters from being able to bring posters to the meeting that is set for tomorrow. The school board claimed that it shut the meeting down because the people in attendance were violating the fire code
....

...Last week, ahead of the school board meeting, the district released its new policy. Officials are allowing parents to block their children from checking out certain items or to block them from using the district’s library and other media centers entirely. If parents are “truly concerned” about a particular work being in the school at all, they can go through the “book challenge process” to ask that it be removed from the catalogue. Such a request triggers a review from at least five district media specialists who, considering the parents’ concerns, will reexamine the work’s age appropriateness....At the start of Monday’s meeting, McDonald said that, until last week, the district had an “outdated book review process.” But, she added, the seven-member board wants to work with parents to make sure their input is heard — about books in their children’s schools or anything else having to do with their education.....

"As these acts of malice, violence, and threats against public school officials have increased, the classification of these heinous actions could be the equivalent to a form of domestic terrorism and hate crimes..." - Viola Garcia and Chip Slaven, National School Board Association, 9/29/21

"We would have readily pointed out the mischaracterization of parents and patrons in our communities as domestic terrorists who merited federal investigation,"
- Idaho School Boards Association, one of seventeen state school board associations that rescinded their memberships with the NSBA.

"Protect The Children" - Sign carried by Muslim parent and protester at Dearborn, Michigan. It was written in five different languages. These kind of signs are now banned from future school board meetings.

Attorney General Merrick Garland and the National School Board Association won't be able to label these Muslim parents as "domestic terrorists" Not going to happen. Can you imagine the kind of media firestorm and scandal that would create?

Iman Sayed Hassan Al-Qazwini, who organized the protest, HATES Donald Trump. He makes it very clear that he sees Trump as a "white supremacist" And yet he joined forces with Conservative Christian parents to protest what he believed were sexually explicit books being pushed onto his children. Further investigation shows the Dearborn School Board set up a system where parents need to exhaustively appeal and prove why a book should not be in the system and not the other way around. Why won't the Dearborn School Board put in the effort and time to explain why books involving sexual acts, rape and incest SHOULD be allowed in these school libraries in the first place?

As I said before, very few parents in this country are going to pick their "political tribalism" over the safety and security of their own children.

For Team Blue, this is open political suicide. Think about how broken the radical identity politics agenda becomes when it helps to make someone like Donald Trump seem like the reasonable and safe choice for 2024... Really think about that. Consider the non stop self inflicted damage done here to alienate and drive many parents completely insane. Parents who already have enough to worry about with record inflation, a world wide pandemic, complete lawlessness in big cities, and the grim possibility of nuclear war with Putin/Russia.

If someone loves their children more than they hate Donald Trump, then how exactly might they vote in 2024?

I'll leave this here for others to discuss.

I am truly confounded how seemingly a majority of people view the world in such binary Dems/Repubs views. That’s not discounting at all the local discussion here for the Dearborn school district, but every.single.thing gets boiled up (if I can use that term creatively here) to the national battle of Rs v Ds. And then opinion pieces and topics like this express confusion and surprise that the 2 sides might actually agree on or work in concert together on some topic…only to end with bringing it all back to the red/blue debate again.

Also, where in the letter to Biden is domestic terrorism labeled at parents in regards to increased threats against public service/school workers or was that bit extrapolated out by way of wherever that quote separate from Newsweek article comes from? I read the letter to Biden and then the subsequent apology for it, sounds like internal politicking within the NSBA.

I think I saw the movie version of The Lovely Bones. It was directed by Peter Jackson. The book received critical acclaim. I’m highly skeptical that we should ban it for teenagers.

VIDEO: WOKE Parents Get BOOED Off Stage After Disrespecting Muslim Parents Protesting Against LGBTQ Books Oct 16, 2022

Chaos broke out at two school board meetings this week when conservative Muslim parents tried to ban LGBTQ+-affirming books from schools in Dearborn, Michigan.

"...The fundamental purpose of school is not to learn about sexual pleasure, not to learn about new sex acts....it is up to every parent to then teach their kids morality, it's out of the place for schools to do it, I reject the notion that parents here are filled with hate or bigotry....the parents here don't want their kids sexualized...."
- Concerned black Christian woman, who is also a parent of a child in the Dearborn school district.

"...You aren't trying to ban a book, you are trying to ban gay people...." - Proponent of current book standards within the Dearborn school district

So Gregory Foreman, aka Black Conservative Perspective, has sourced more parents giving statements at the Dearborn school board meeting.

Think about the long standing historical conflict between Muslims and Christians.

Think about how easily they aligned once they saw an open threat to their children. Some of you radical leftists will likely say that it's a "perceived threat" only. OK, if that's your position and opinion, then you have your right to that. But parents in general have a zero tolerance standard when it comes to harm or threat to their children. Whether that's realized or potential or perceived. You cannot stop human nature in the average parent.

The average American and the average parent is not a bigot. They are generally going to be working class people just trying to do the best they can and protect their children. The LGBT speakers at this meeting in this video all have one thing in common - They demand empathy but give none back.

I recognize the overall LGBT community has real hardship. And there truly are some bigots out there. But where is the empathy going the other way? Where is the empathy for working class parents who see this differently?

Point to note - On an aside from the ground level issue with parents, this is all political suicide for the Democratic Party. You cannot start the machine rolling in smearing concerned Muslim parents as "bigots" and hope to survive that politically.

Meh. Christian Republicans and Muslims....that "alliance" wont' last long.

Personally, explaining that process should be done by the parent(s), not the school. The school should focus on improving their performance and actually teaching subjects like math and science, because they aren’t doing that very well, either.

Is there a link to where these things are being TAUGHT in the class; ala part of the curriculum and NOT just in the school library?

There are plenty of rated R movies I let my kid watch when he was growing up. I was always respectful that other parents might be different. If he had friends over, I made sure he didn't show rated R movies.

I have never advocated to get rid of movie ratings.

Kids don't have the same first amendment considerations that adults do.

We are talking about school libraries here.

I mean honestly, the real question we should be asking here is wtf is so beneficial to kids about incestual rape scenes and oral sex between underage boys?

If you come down on the side of keeping these books, that is the exact side you are on.

That's weird.

On that topic it will. Dearborn is a unique city, roughly 1/3 Muslim.

Is there a link to where these things are being TAUGHT in the class; ala part of the curriculum and NOT just in the school library?
Pointless question.
Here is one Link

A one person testimonial which doesn't answer his question as to "where these things are being TAUGHT in the class; ala part of the curriculum and NOT just in the school library?" nor provide any proof.
The NEA passes out badges for teachers which links to topics such fisting, safe rimming, SadoMasochism, and other inappropriate topics. But yeah, it is only one.

That rainbow woman isn't teaching it in the class. It isn't part of the curriculum. She MIGHT be out of line for wearing her identity on her sleeve so much that she becomes a beacon for children that question their sexuality or who know their sexuality but who are looking for someone for help; but even then, I'm not sure.

And while I respect the anonymity of "Libs of Tik-Tok"...... "Libs of Tik-Tok" just screams money grab. This person doesn't seem to be an expert. They don't even have any REAL examples.

The drag queen clip is a poor example. There's no background on that.....nor is that an example of a non-parent pushing an agenda that a parent would be uncomfortable with.

The therapist allegedly going against the parents wishes doesn't even have audio. How do we know from this example that what he is saying is problematic?

All of the other examples were non audio and incomplete. None of them even remotely bring up my OP...."Is there a link where these books are being part of the curriculum.

All kidding aside.....if you're just running schtick; I won't waste my time. I'm interesting in hearing this side of the conversation; but noone's brought anything to the table yet.

Disagree. I can see trepidation and concern if these books are being part of the curriculum. If they're just in the library for a student to take out.....then that's just a lot of hand wringing from Conservatives.
Omg it is just hand wringing!

You know how none of this becomes a big deal? If the first time a librarian is alerted to the fact that a book has a boy blowing another boy, said librarian goes and pulls it off the shelf and says oops.

Instead we get a bunch of weirdos advocating for it.

Its all so perverted.

I’m really surprised there are not scores of parents at these schoolboard meetings demanding that the library should keep books of lil Johnny finishing off his best friend.

Advocates - diid I phrase that right?

This Book is Gay seems likely to have value for a gay teen. I don’t see the harm in it being in libraries.
So let me get this straight. It is bad when the GOP uses the term grooming.

But it is totally cool and of course not grooming, to teach teenage gay males how to connect with older gay males?

I cant keep up anymore.

teach teenage gay males how to connect with older gay males?

Where are you getting that from?

Under topics of this book I see:

Inside you'll find the answers to all the questions you ever wanted to ask, with topics like:

  • Stereotypes ― the facts and fiction
  • Coming out as LGBT
  • Where to meet people like you
  • The ins and outs of gay sex
  • Stereotypes ― the facts and fiction
  • How to flirt
  • And so much more!

"Where to meet people like you" (if that is what you referring to, says nothing about teenage males connecting with older gay males. "People Like You" would suggest their peers.

Where are you getting that from?

Grindr is mentioned in the book. This Snopes article helps give a good idea on what people find objectionable:

Please don't be condescending. I got a warning for that.

I mean honestly, the real question we should be asking here is wtf is so beneficial to kids about incestual rape scenes and oral sex between underage boys?
I agree. Books like this shouldn't be in school libraries. That includes the Bible with its stories of rape and incest. Of course, the same parents who are most likely to have a conniption over the books cited in this thread are also the most likely to read cherry picked verses from the Bible to small children.

At least be consistent.

The problem is you equating the Bible to some piece of trash. That's where you fail. You're comparing apples to oranges.

Is the bible in school libraries? I actually thought that wouldn't have been allowed. I have zero problems with not having it or at the very least require it to be a g rated children's version.

In most school districts, yes. In the districts that they've been removed, you can bet conservatives flipped their wigs.

Just to give you a sense of what we're talking about...

Numbers 31

The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.” ...

13 Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp. 14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who returned from the battle.

15 “Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them. 16 “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the Lord’s people. 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man."

That pales in comparison with descriptions from other books, but from the religion standpoint alone I would have thought it wasn't allowed.

Maybe you'll like this one.

Genesis 19

19 The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground. 2 “My lords,” he said, “please turn aside to your servant’s house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.”

“No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”

3 But he insisted so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast, and they ate. 4 Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house. 5 They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”

6 Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him 7 and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing. 8 Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”

You getting an idea of how Old Testament god felt about women? I don't remember these stories in Sunday School.

Ultimately, the point is if you're going to argue that sexual filth should be banned from schools, don't think you can be choosy about what qualifies. Religious folk teaming up to have books banned should be careful what they wish for.

If you have come across the specific excerpt from the book, I’d be interested in reading it word for word.

However, from reading about it, it seems the reference is explaining how gay adults often use dating apps to meet each other. It doesn’t encourage minors to connect with adults for sexual/romantic encounters.

Surely the author that writes the following...

HOWEVER, before you do, I’d like to remind you that we taught you all about straight sex when you were ELEVEN YEARS OLD during sixth grade. The fact that they didn’t also teach you what same-sex couples do is nothing less than institutionalized homophobia. Straight sex was presented as the norm to make five percent of the population feel abnormal. Is there something icky about gay sex? Is there something wrong with it? I challenge any politician to discuss this with me. I WILL RUIN THEM.

Handles Grindr instructions with tactful purpose to illustrate that this is just a way to do things when you are older.

Here are pages from one of the books on question. It reads like Shakespeare.

So, this over a book in the library. I agree the book should not be in the library. However, lets not make it out to be more than it is.

The very fact that they are fighting to keep it rather than immediately discard it makes this a bigger deal. When people dig their heels in on a no brainer decision, you damn well better listen to what they are telling you.

The very fact that they are fighting to keep it
Can you point me to where you're seeing this? I only glossed over GG's Wall o' Text so I probably missed it.
Bad faith question.

Obvious deductive reasoning does not require a video of somebody pounding their fist on the table. The very fact we are talking about this topic and people fighting at school board meetings to get rid of it means there are people on the other side

Bad faith response. You either have something to point to or you don't.

Here's the only thing I could find in GG's text that resembles a "fight" or "prounding their fist on the table".

"Last week, ahead of the school board meeting, the district released its new policy. Officials are allowing parents to block their children from checking out certain items or to block them from using the district’s library and other media centers entirely. If parents are “truly concerned” about a particular work being in the school at all, they can go through the “book challenge process” to ask that it be removed from the catalogue. Such a request triggers a review from at least five district media specialists who, considering the parents’ concerns, will reexamine the work’s age appropriateness....At the start of Monday’s meeting, McDonald said that, until last week, the district had an “outdated book review process.” But, she added, the seven-member board wants to work with parents to make sure their input is heard — about books in their children’s schools or anything else having to do with their education....."

So I'll ask again, is there something I'm missing, or are you expecting people to buy your portrayals which often times are intentionally hyperbolic?

CC - I think the big part of the problem is the school taking these books on. Now the onus is on the parents against it (probably the majority) to have them removed. If they are in a public library, that’s fine, not a school library. Personally I think it’s inappropriate for the school to have them. Who knows, maybe it ends up in the SC someday.

I agree. The vetting process needs to improve. Books like this shouldn't slip through the cracks. I can't imagine a large percentage of parents are going to fight for a book like this. I'm pretty liberal with my attitude towards sex and This Book is Gay is a hard pass.

Of course there is something you are missing.

Of course there is something you are missing.
Nah. Your inaccurate hyperbole is always easy to spot. I genuinely asked if there was a part of the story I hadn't seen. Per usual, you made **** up to push your narrative. It's all good. I know that's your shtick.
You didnt genuinely ask anything. Your question was phony.

We know the book is in the library. We know parents are trying to get it removed. We know they have had to take it to the school board.

Your question was garbage.

For those who are against This Book Is Gay being in high school libraries, I have a question: How would you want your gay teenage son or daughter to learn about being gay and gay sex?

Im not sure it’s the school’s job, It doesn’t matter if they are gay or straight.

One thing about schoolboards is they (over)react on possibilities based on other school districts. Maybe there were a couple of parents for the book or maybe there were 100’s. The schoolboard may be trying to get ahead of the curve and be open to every possibility. They just took a bad approach according to the people who will vote them out.
