Finland has a capitalist economy. Why are the Finns happier than the US? (1 Viewer)

Showed a guy I work with from Finland this thread and he said "It is not that we are any happier than people in the USA, we just don`t whine and cry about everything and life in general like "you people"   SISU!!!

According to the 2018 World Happiness Report, based on research conducted by Gallup, Finland is the happiest country in the world. The Finns are not so sure about the result, though – being, as they are, a typically stoic sort of people.

“Nordic people, and the Finns in particular, are emotionally introverted,” explained Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute, an independent think tank in Denmark that studies happiness and wellbeing. “They rarely rank highly on expressions of joy or anger. For [the Finns], happiness is more about living a reserved, balanced and resilient life.”

"What comes to my mind is that Finnish people are more content with life than happy.”

Sanders is the one using the s-word.

I like the Nordic model. Capitalism plus democracy plus individual rights plus a social safety net. That's not socialism at all, and is pretty much what Buttigieg and Klobuchar ran on.

But Sanders goes beyond that, if not in policy (I haven't paid attention to details) then in complimenting socialist dictators, denigrating capitalism, and palling around with the Democratic Socialists of America.

Ethnic Finns living in the US probably approximate the happiness of their homeland.  Some of it is just cultural.

Of course the dirty secret of the Nordic countries is that their tax structure is less progressive than America, and they don’t have/need much of a military.  And they don’t demonize billionaires.  Sweden has twice the billionaires per capita as the US.  Good luck selling a Nordic tax structure in the US to pay for all the goodies.  They generally tax income over about $60K at about 55%, and that is the top tax rate.  Contrary to Bernie’s ranting, we are much more progressive than that.

This look like an 80's Brat Pack movie...here is a quote you don't expect to see about a PM in 2022:

Sanna Marin’s partying became a topic for the first time during the pandemic when she didn’t bring the phone, that the PM should have on her at all times, with her when she was out partying. Her security team tried to call her to say that she had been exposed to someone positive
 
I'm sure Finland has been quite happy all these years sponging off unhappy countries like the US providing NATO security protection from Russia.

Certainly doesn't sound qualified based on this post but I don't know anything about her or Finland.
 
It is ironic that all these countries that are held up by the left as superior to the US, are whiter than the US. We are suppose to believe whites are evil privileged oppressors who live off the backs of the hard work of minorities. I see two distinct competing visions for this country:

1. We need to socially engineer our economy so all races and genders have similar outcomes by treating people unequally and dividing everyone into groups.

2. We need to treat everyone equally and give everyone the same chance.

One side professes to promote diversity by slurring races with terms like white oppressors and white privilege and censoring oppositions by labelling them white supremists and bigots, deplatforming them, and having them fired. And then act ignorant as to why this country is divided. All these ideologies based on 'critical thinking' are critically ignorant and divisive. But being divisive has always been their ultimate plan.

I think there are more than just 2 distinct visions for the USA. That is a false dilemma. I don't think Finland falls into either of those groups but they are obviously very successful. Forcing people into those 2 tribes will only continue to cause the divisiveness that you say you hate.

I don’t see what the big deal is at all. If our politicians did stuff like this I’d be more likely to vote for them.
