Jared Goff just got a 4-year/$212M deal with $170M guaranteed ($53M/year). How does this affect Tua's contract negotiations?
Insanity.
Goff hasn't missed games like Tua. But top Tua is a little better than top Goff. Hard to compare when one has top talent at oline, and the other top talent at WR/RB. Probably the same ballpark $$ for Tua, but I wish they could wait another year to avoid a Daniel Jones type situation. Neither is a top 10 QB IMO, although Tua may still be getting better.
Again, I think the "economics" of QB play comes down to 4 buckets
1) Good players on Cheap rookie deals
2) Vets with some Juice getting near the minimum to resusitate their careers
3) Good/Great QBs on their second or third contracts
4) Guys who are being paid well but likely not worth the money, but their teams are at the end of their rope in terms of 1 and 2.
With Tua, and Tannyhill before him Miami is likely buying category 4 when they hope they can get category 3. IN Tannyhills' case it was because the coaches that had him didn't use him correctly and by the time Gase was HC there were glaring problems everywhere. With Tua it "hits" a little different bc he is arguably a Category three guy right now, but the injury history and the mediocre performances vs playoff teams are the concerns.
Again, the silence in Miami is deafening. Miami has managed the cap perfectly WITHOUT the Tua extension. In seeing how Miami structures a lot of their contracts, I think they want to "make good" for Tua but have the usual flexibility of a low cap number this year and likely next (with Holland Phillips and Waddle coming due) and the ability to "play with the numbers" in terms of extensions after that or "outs" that allow Miami to move on if he regresses in 2 years (kind of like russ wilson but without the monster cap hit). Miami is at "value" with their RB room, their Linebackers, and their safeties at the moment. Chubb, Hill, and Armstead's deals will be replaced by Phillips, Waddle, and Hollands deals, so if Tua gets a Goff sized contract then Miami will have to get young and cheap either at Corner or O line to mitigate.
In any case, Miami's window is the next 2 years. After that the bill comes due again. New england isn't ready to compete just yet, the Bills are taking a step back (like Miami will have to in 2 years) and the Jets are banking on AA-ron.
