2023 New York Jets: Bye Bye (6 Viewers)

Wilson finally traded

Ripped em off.

Seriously congratulations on getting out of the distraction and getting something for him

-QG
My friend said that they should build a statue for JD for being able to trade him. I said, great, let's build a statue for the guy that made one of the worst draft picks in Jets history, if not all time.

I'm curious to see if Payton can turn him into a decent QB. God knows that we can't develop any QBs. The kid has a great arm and mobility, but a bird brain so far.

Maybe Broncos are tanking for next season?

Zach Wilson, Jarrett Stidham, Ben DiNucci. Oof.

So do you guys hunt out a cheap #3/emergency guy?

-QG

Best return we could hope for based on the mkt for other QBs traded. At least hes gone and wont be a distraction. Not an awful dice roll by Denver and ZW has a legit offensive coach. Win/Win.

Officially closes the book on the worst draft pick in team history - and theres been a ton

Yeah, miracle they got anything for this weekend. I always assumed this would be the result ( 7 for 6 swap) but I figured the other team would delay until after the draft just to kick the "cost" down the road a year.

Maybe next time let's look at who the guy is playing against in college before we mess our pants over a handful of OMG chuck and pray TD passes....ey Joe?

This one was a disaster from day 1. I stopped playing football in 5th grade and I knew it from the start

guy vaulted up to #2 over a pro day throw!

silver lining is all the other 1st rd QBs except Trevor are awful as well. Once they won that meaningless game the die was cast!

Pretty sure he was at #2 way before the Pro-Day. It only cemented that we were taking him over Fields. I don't think Lance was even in the conversation either.

I'll give you credit. You called it from the start......but it's a pretty safe bet no matter whomever we draft. We are just terrible at developing QBs. Gotta wonder if Mahomes would have been bad behind this team.

To be fair, I thought fields would be good and should have been the pick (and I still believe he can be salvaged)

But God this was just so obvious. I truly believe Wilson would have failed anywhere. He's that bad

I have a feeling its going to be a WR at 10 (unless Alt somehow falls)

And then you just hold your nose and PRAY that Smith stays healthy enough to play left tackle for 5 months, which is an unbelievable gamble.

I still think they should trade BACK....but it takes two to tango.

Maybe Indy looks to jump up from 15 to take Bowers and we can get their 2nd back for it. Probably would need to send something back their way too though.

That would be like our first and third for their first, second, and 5th rounder.

Hold your nose again when we sign Bakhtiari to fill in for Smith.

My preferences for tonight in order for our first pick:
One of the big 3 WR
Joe Alt
Trade down to the teens to grab a 2nd rounder, get T + WR
Brock Bowers
Best available T

Yea, I think that's what I've settled on.
Agree with this. Would switch Bowers and Best Available T though.

The Rodgers window is very short.....so it's tough to swallow using the pick on a guy who theoretically might not play this year....but it was the right move. Natural LT and Smith probably doesn't make it through the year unscathed.

Fleeced minny for a couple of picks on the trade down as well

Loved getting premium Oline, plus extra picks. Bowers was the sexy choice, but tackle issues are season killers. Hopefully we got Brick 2.0.

Aside from insurance this year, we would have been in the same situation the following year looking for starting tackles. This is also a relatively cheap option going forward.

Definitely not the sexy choice, but smart one imo. Now let's get some pass catchers.

Not sexy but the right move. OL is old and injury prone. Cant risk having a mess again. Pretty confident he'll play this year and likely a lot. This leaves the OL with a future core of Olu, AVT and Tippman. Cant have enough OL IMO after the last few yrs. Id stil sign another body!

Great trade down - assuming JD was bluffing hard and it woked out great with LV/Denver right behind Minny. I definitely think there is a good chance they trade into the 2d for a WR. Looking at the chart - their 3rd and the 3 4ths equal about 384 pts which could get them around pick 53 (mid 2d) - if they throw in a 3rd next yr that should get them a bit higher - definitely see a possible trade up if their guy is on the board

Unless they love someone in the 50s, I think I'd rather stand pat. Maybe someone like Polk in the 3rd, and then in the 4th, they can add a good backup RB to Breece and maybe look at a developmental-type QB before giving the D some help.

ETA: What kind of value does our 2025 2nd have in a trade up with our 3rd this year?

Gonna be cool to see the next OC after dumb dumb scheme this kid open and get him into space.

I watched that draft call last night. First we had the Cringe brothers do their thing. Then JD. Then Rah-Rah Saleh puts on his show. Then Hackett comes on and I couldn't help but think this simpleton won't even know how to use him.

3 4th round picks. Lots of ways to go. Will they get their developmental QB here? Maybe RB. Personally I would take another WR (an outside one). They could also go DT or Safety. Maybe even Guard. Too bad we can't draft an OC and HC.

I'd like to see the TE Sanders, WR Franklin, an RB, dev QB, or DT/S with these next 3 picks.

I didnt think anyone could be mor cringy than Woody in those calls but Hackett gave it a run

Not a fan of the trade down - then trading another 4th for a 3rd next yr from Detroit is meh as it will be late. The Rb they took looks like a beast....may take some short yardage/GL carries from Breece which may upset some FF teams

JFM dumped to the Broncos for 2026 6th rder - i understand he was overpaid but thats a poor return. id have kept him for depth but frees up around $7M

Giving JFM away for nothing makes very little sense. Still gonna carry a big cap hit for the year. Sillyness

Had a feeling they'd end up with Jordan Travis. Good spot for him to develop behind those 2 guys.

2 RB's is weird, as is taking a corner from Canada. But.....Jets

agreed - really like Travis - very nice development qb

2 RBs? Izzy must be on the outs - though I think the 2d RB looks like a ST project - Canadian CB who never went to college? ill be rooting for him

overall pleased with the offseason/draft - will do a deeper dive next week

Interesting draft. It didn't feel exciting, but it was pretty smart.

My thought today was JD was shaping (or completing) the roster in its final stage. He added pieces that we didn't have:

We added OT depth (and future starter) that we have never had before. We are finally covered in case of injury.

We added a real slot WR whose bullish yard after catch compliments GW and MW in style. We now have 3 different types of starting WRs which we have not had before.

We added 2 big strong RBs that are good pass blockers. We now have short yardage guys that are also good in pass pro. Things don't bode well for Izzy who couldn't block to save his QB's life.

We added a developmental QB which we didn't have last year (arguably for a long time).

We also added the CB from Canada. It's an incredible story. He looked great at the East West Shrine week. He was rookie of the year in the CFL. This guy has the natural talent to contribute this year and going forward if we lose a CB for cap reasons.

I don't know too much about the Alabama safety, but we can use some depth there.

Plus we added a third rounder (albeit late) for next year.

As far as JFM goes, good player, but someone had to go for cap reasons (hell we added T Smith and Mike Williams). Restructuring would have pushed money into next year and I guess JD didn't want to do that. Plus they wanted to give more snaps to McDonald and Clemons. Reddick is way more important to have. At least we won't have as many late hit flags now. Stopping the run is still a concern though.

Anyway, it wasn't exciting, but our team got way better (and tougher - notice how they went after a physical WR and RBs)

My 75 year old friend that lives down here in South Florida but grew up in NYC going to home games for the Jets in the early days, say the 60s from the stories he tells me...
He had a special draft wish of Jordan Travis, knowing he needs time to heal and hopefully for Jets fans he never touches the field this year behind Aaron Rodgers
This kid was extremely good before he suffered a severe injury towards the end of the year last season. It's quite possible if not for the injury, we're talking 1st round pick

The numbers speak for themselves

He's accurate, doesn't make a lot of mistakes, calm and collective, underrated IMHO.
Hard to root for him as a Phinsfan but I genuinely felt bad for the kid last year and wish him the best despite the team he landed on
I think the fan base will love him in years to come.

Pretty happy with this Draft. Moved around the board a bit, got a nice 3rd rounder for next year, and signed a bunch of UDFA's that had legit draft rankings attached. I love the Jordan Travis pick, exactly the kind of dart throw we should be taking. Very happy with the OL and WR and BAllen looks like a beast compliment to Breece. The CFL pick looks intriguing, not sure why we drafted the 2nd RB, but ok. Overall it's been an excellent offseason for Joe D he just needs a playoff appearance and he will get an extension for sure.

I thought it was a good draft, but I also wonder if it would have been better to have just kept the 3 4th round picks. He could have drafted our RB Allen, Jayden Hicks (Safety) , and even the center Van Pran-Granger or G Mahogany. Anyway, I can't complain even if that second RB was an odd choice with other positions available at the time (Mahogany). Maybe they like their guard depth.

The UDFAs look interesting.

Becton signing with Philly today. I hate that bum. Not only did he suck, constantly complained, and blamed our coaches (for him sucking, having no heart, being fat), but he also cost us a comp pick now that it was outside the compensatory time range. Oh well, whatever.

Now that the offseason is mostly done - I took a look at the needs and moves:

Needs: As Woody said: offense, offense offense! positions: development QB, at least 3 decent starters on the OL, backup RB/short ydg back, WR (#2/3), resign ST (K/P), DL Huff, safety depth

players lost: Huff, JFM, Becton, Brown, Zach, Uzomah, Lawson, Q Jefferson - besides Huff not much to lose there

Signed/drafted:

QB: Added great depth and youth
Tyrod Taylor - bit of an overpay and a little old/injury prone but finally a very solid backup QB;
Jordan Taylor - 5th rd - would have gone much higher if not injured. solid developmental QB - if develops could possibly take over in 2-3 yrs

RB: Depth that will get run

Brandon Allen - 4th rder - beast mode and young - Thunder to Hall's lightening. Way better at pass protection than Izzy who may not make the roster.
Isiah Davis- 5th rder - playmaker - possible ST ace. Solid depth - strange to draft 2 RBs but mid rds and if BPA then im ok with it

WR: shaky still but filled holes - one of my bigger concerns

Mike Williams: IF healthy hes a great #2 - lots of injuries which helped get him on cheap but needs to stay healthy.
Corey Malichi: 3rd rder - Deebo light. Unlike most 3rd rders need him to contribute right away - his development will be key

OL: wow - didnt think JD could do an overhaul with the cap room available but he did!

Tyron Smith - I consider best OT on mkt and got him cheap - huge injury risk and age but worth the risk. Huge upgrade over former LTs
Morgan Moses - 2d coming that never should have been let go - again age/injuries but a solid quality LT - trade and contract both cheap.
John Simpson - not a long track record of success and lots of penalties but played well next to Moses. If you told me they would sign 2/5 of Raven Line Id be stoked - could be replaced tho by rook
Olu Fashanu - stud rookie in a great situation to learn from top OL and not be rushed. They might move him to guard but im actually ok with 1st sitting as rare depth - history says he'll be used

ST: both resigned for reasonable amounts - love the continuity for once

DL: shuffle and possibly weaker as losing Huff and JFM was rough but confident Saleh can keep it top notch - solid replacements

H reddick - better history than Huff but older - cost a pick and close to what Huff made so they must like him better or Huff didnt like the system - great rebound signing and not much drop off
Kinlaw - like the player but hated the price - way overpay. hes gotta deliver for that price tag.

Total FA - gotta be impressed. JD filled all the holes, except Safety which is still shaky. Didnt have a lot of $ but put together a great FA class - and for the 1st time brought in depth as well as starters. I couldnt ask for much more in FA

Draft: Love the 1st 2 picks. a little perplexed at the 4th rd trade backs for not a lot of value but liked Allen and Taylor a lot. Ive read some good analysis on the other players so feeling like its an above average draft but time will tell.

Season outlook: Depends on health and coaching but JD did his job IMO. Rodgers has a solid OL and weapons to make a run and the D should still be top 10 in the league. Was excited last year and got kicked in the gut after 4 plays so nervous to be so optimistic again but the team is much better situated to sustain injuries - now Saleh and co need to show they can coach better or they will need to go

Future: Its now or never - Im looking at a 2 yr run. They have $77M next year in cap room without restructuring Q and rodgers. They will likely use it on new deals for Sauce, Wilson, JJ and Hall which I like to keep the core together. They should be able to add some as well with structuring - outlook for future is the best its been in a while
