Sia - # 1 - Chandelier

Everything has been chronological to this point, but I saved Sia's best song for last. This song is pretty much her magnum opus, definitely Sia's most iconic song. Chandelier introduced everyone to a brand new Sia after her 4 year performing hiatus with her most powerful and personal song to date. It's one of the most emotional songs of the '10's, made Sia a household name for power ballads, and blew her into the mainstream in a big way.

I went back and forth between this and Breathe Me for the number one song, but this won out because it's rare for a pop song to make me feel this way when listening to it. Chandelier is when I knew I had to pay attention to her entire catalog.

This was a fun one. Thanks Zegras and KP for the work behind all this!

Thanks to zegras,KP , and the rest of you dummies. Lots of new music and artists added to my favorites. Also, reminded me how much I enjoy artists like John Mellencamp, Tom Petty and Tears For Fears.
Hopefully everyone found at least one Collective Soul song to add to their lists.

Mad World -- Though I like the Gary Jules cover better.
I actually agree 100%.
What does that say when someone does their #1 song better than them lol

One of the better arguments for when someone says Covers are never as good as the original
Totally disagree with you both re: the Jules’ cover. I think the original is so much better.

Oh man, my favorite Pointer Sisters song didn’t make the top 31 (unless I missed it). :sadbanana:

My favorite Incubus song also didn’t make the cut:

It was definitely in my first 5 out. Made the rough draft, but got squeezed as I worked my way through the catalog.

Will the Wolf Survive? was probably most people’s first experience with Los Lobos and it holds up very well.

I didn’t think it would make the list because

1. It’s a cover and their biggest hit is already a cover
2. The album isn’t on Spotify so only a live version exists

but I liked their cover of the Dead’s Bertha on the Deadicated tribute album.

This has all of the songs that I considered for my top 31, however songs after 31 are in no particular order.

Looking, back, there are a few I could have moved up, a few I could have moved down and some that I didn't put in that I probably would have, but that is part of the fun of making these lists. I know he isn't in some of your wheelhouses, but I enjoyed Ranking one of the few artists that I really listen to in depth that not many people do.

"Bertha" was in contention but I already had eight covers (four each in Spanish and English). Technically, it's 7 1/2 because "Across 110th St." was part of a medley.

Maybe I can use it in the covers thing

#1 Nada (here off Live at the Belly Up, 2017, but see also below)

I feel the dust coat my teeth and turn my sweat to mud
I tip the bottle and bite the lime
There ain't no moral to this story at all
And anything I tell you very well could be a lie
I've been away from the living, I don't need to be forgiven
I'm just waiting for that cold, black soul of mine
To come alive

(Original version, with fan-made images) The Refreshments "Nada"
(Alternate Live Version) Nada (live) - Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers

This song was originally recorded by The Refreshments on 1996’s Fizzy Fuzzy Big & Buzzy, but I went with a live version instead. Partially because it’s a bit longer.

Why I chose this:
What is it with me, #1 songs, and harmonica intros, am I right? There’s a lot to appreciate here musically. A soft, simple intro, with a pause for the drums to lay a beat and the music to pick up the pace a little. Heck, on the studio version above we go about 50 seconds before we hit lyrics. It’s definitely a song where the musical part stars, but the lyrics accompany them very well. Another story song, fitting well among several others, including a few that were years and years away from being written.

Again, what I enjoy here is everything. The passioned, almost desperate vocals, the energy, and the message. There’s a sense of isolation here, of lying to yourself or little lies to get through the day. Been away from the living? We’ve probably all felt that in the last five years. Heck, in a way that describes most of my 30s. But I’ll keep the personal aspect to a minimum. Just know that there’s a little there.

Thanks for the likes and comments along the way. It’s been a different experience from Alice in Chains, for sure. Certainly other artists were complete unknowns to me (more on that some other time), but I feel like some of those were better known by the M-AD collective. Round 3, whenever that is, will probably return to a more well-known artist. Though I’m not afraid to dive deep again sometime in the future. It might depend on how well gothic dark cabaret is perceived. ;)

Presented 31-1, since that's also how it is on the playlist(https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0wCxwfB29pCiBlesp4OINL?si=cfbc82c60d4e4494). There's a cover version for the Bonus song "Yahoos & Triangles", as Spotify only has the shorter (King of the Hill) cut listed.

Mike ShinodaJust Win BabyIn The End

This is the 5th song I have included in my top 31 from Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory album, their 1st studio album. The song peaked at #1 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart and #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

This is the song that first drew me to listen to Linkin Park. Up to that point, I had not really heard any music like Linkin Park, and I loved it. My brother-in-law is 11 years younger than me, and back then, around 2001-2002, he would make me mix CDs with newer music on it that I never would have heard otherwise. This song was on one of those mix CDs. I bought Hybrid Theory as a result of hearing that song, and I was hooked.

Mike said this about the song:

“I tried so hard, and got so far, but in the end, it doesn’t even matter..”: "Those just popped out. I think I was reacting to the things we as a band had gone through in the beginning. The song almost doesn’t know if it wants to be optimistic or pessimistic – the beginning is a little dark, but you can’t tell (lyrically) if it resolves or not. That’s what I like about it."

He also said this, which is pretty interesting and explains a reference from a Fort Minor song:

The Fort Minor song Get Me Gone talks about how the label wanted Mike to quit rapping and limit himself to just play keyboards. According to him, this happened while the band was writing the final verses for In The End. "I don't remember who suggested rewriting the lyrics. At that point we were operating on intuition. We didn't know what we were doing. We just had like feelings about what to try. I think, it was probably like 'hey this is gonna be an important song on the record cause it's the most like a single, it's probably gonna be a single. So we should really try, really try to like, beat any of the... beat the verses.' And when I did it, when I did the final version, I knew that they were like, I felt like they were better and I think everybody kind of agreed. So it was that interplay between me and Chester. And it was kinda the simplicity of it. Yeah, the original version was a lot more abstract and more rappy. It might be out there in the internet somewhere I guess. I will say that I remember our A&R guy from the label coming in and trying to like, tell me what to do and produce it and that was one of the moments where we knew the sessions, like this whole recording process, might fall apart and we were in full on fight then with him and like a couple people from the label for our souls, for our identity because he kept coming in. That was the song where he's like 'I've played it for whoever this rapper and he said he didn't like it and so you should change it.' That was like 'we liked it though.' Like 'this is us.' I respect that rapper, I don't care what that guy thinks of my stuff. He doesn't talk about the things we talk about. He raps about rappy things. I'm talking about like real life and emotions. That's two different things, of course he didn't like it. And that was when, that week or that couple weeks was when he started going to Chester and being like 'you could like have the band all to yourself and you could be the star and blah blah and could ditch these guy.' He went to me and he told I should play keyboards. That was that moment. It was during, when we were like, getting In The End, the verses to In The End right. Very tense time."

Chester said this about the song:

"I don't really participate in picking singles. I learnt that after making Hybrid Theory. I was never a fan of 'In The End' and I didn't even want it to be on the record, honestly. How wrong could I have possibly been? I basically decided at that point I don't know what the **** I'm talking about, so I leave that to other people who are actually talented at somehow picking songs that people are going to like the most. It also gave me a good lesson, as an artist, that I don't necessarily have to only make music, in my band, that I want to listen to. More often than not, something that I like, very few other people like, and something that those people like is something that I kind of like, or don't like at all. And that's cool, it gives me a new appreciation for the songs. But, you know, now I love 'In The End' and I think it's such a great song. I actually see how good of a song it is, it was just hard for me to see it at the time."[

In 2021, Kerrang ranked the top 20 Linkin Park songs of all time and ranked In The End at #2. Here is an excerpt about the song from that ranking:

A slower, more expansive, piano-driven composition – albeit one littered with lung-busting power choruses – it didn’t obviously fit the harder edges wrapped around it. Becoming the album’s fourth single, however, it became the first to truly foreshadow their enormous mainstream-busting potential. Featuring one of Chester’s most iconic, exposed vocal performances (‘I’ve put my trust in you / Pushed as far as I can go…’) and accompanied by a surrealist music video that (at the time of writing) is on the cusp of a billion views on YouTube, it has doubtless earned immortality.

In 2017, Billboard ranked the top 15 Linkin Park songs of all time and ranked In The End at #1. Here is an excerpt about the song from that ranking:

Linkin Park took In the End all the way to No. 2 on the Hot 100 in 2002 — as the fourth single off Hybrid Theory, incredibly.

And they were able to take a fundamentally top 40-unfriendly genre one spot from Hot 100 immortality for a simple reason: In the End was one of the best pop songs of the 21st century. So many parts of In the End have become iconic that it’s easy to take one or more for granted. The opening piano riff is iconic, of course. The opening line is iconic (“I tried so hard…”). The chorus (“But in the end… it doesn’t even matter“) is iconic. The bridge (“I PUT MY TRUST…IN…YOU”) is at least iconic-adjacent. And the last piano echo, a final sob over the tear-stained track, is iconic.

But what makes In the End so special is how even the connecting tissue of all these unforgettable moments is immaculately crafted — the conscious/subconscious interplay between Shinoda’s main vocal and Bennington’s distant-memory backing, the subtle production glitches that delicately suggest a fractured psyche, the bleary-eyed guitars that at least try to lend a sympathetic shoulder to Bennington’s chorus wailing. Few songs in any genre have this much care put into their composition; for early ’00s rock, it towered over the pack like Chester himself, perched on the gargoyle in the song’s video.

In 2020, Metal Hammer ranked the top 25 Linkin Park songs of all time and ranked In The End at #1. Here is an excerpt from their writeup on the song:

Eschewing most of the album’s tropes with a slower pace and a piano-driven intro though still featuring the kind of power chorus that became the band’s biggest asset, TeamRock describes In The End as “another stunning showcase for Chester, who absolutely slays the chorus and rips his heart out of chest on the song’s middle eight.

In 2023, Loudwire ranked all of the Linkin Park singles to that point and ranked In The End at #1. Here is an excerpt about the song from that ranking:

“In the End” features a distinctively dark piano piece that both opens and ends the song. It features a perfect give and take between Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington, with Shinoda’s lyrical flow accentuated by Bennington’s held note interjections, providing a perfect sing-along for whichever vocalist you want to imitate.

Ironically the song appears to be about putting in the work to achieve something that ultimately goes unnoticed by the intended audience, but that’s not the case here as “In The End” is often lauded as Linkin Park’s best song.

The band remixed the Hybrid Theory version of this song for their remix album Reanimation. That version of the song is here; it was remixed by Kutmasta Kurt and features a rap verse from Motion Man. This is another excellent remix.

Any of the non-Spotify peeps want me to put their playlists together, let me know. I noticed there are still a handful missing from Part 1 on the playlist, and was going to update that too so we have playlists available for all artists.
Yes, please. And then explain how I do that going forward.

Echoed thanks to Zegras and KP (and anyone else I’m missing) for putting this together.

I’m down to do whatever the masses want - covers draft, 3rd round of this, etc. If/when we do the 3rd one, I’m going to be a bit more strategic on my choice as I don’t think Thin Lizzy resonated that well.

Ohio

All four of these guys were hippies to a degree, and as a result, the protest song was big for them. Stills, while in the Springfield, wrote the all-time great "For What It's Worth", but this one is even better. Written by Young after seeng the famous photo, it was quickly put together / released while the incident was still fresh in people's minds, and it cemented the group as quasi spokespeople for the counterculture movement.

I assume Neil is to blame for lack of Ohio on Spotify?

Yup. All of "his" CSNY songs are not there, nor is Woodstock (Joni Mitchell)
I can't recall, did artists outside of the hippie/protest group remove all their music from radio if CSNY's Ohio (for example) was played?
Asking for my friend Joe.

(Seriously though, I'm not trying to be political here, just pissed so many songs in my annual playlists are now greyed out)

Honestly, it's basically Neil being Neil.

He took his music off Spotify because they are the home of Joe Rogan who Neil says spread dangerous misinformation about masking/vaccines/etc. CSN followed suit as did Joni Mitchell. But soon, CSN realized it was kind of silly (and Neil somewhat overreacted as Rogan was not nearly as bad as Neil thought), so CSN quietly put their stuff back on. But Neil, being Neil, didn't care and he's not budging (honestly, he probably doesn't even think about it anymore, nor does he care. Neil is gonna do what he wants.)

Uh oh- 1st up is The Jam?? ;)

The plan is like last time - listen at least to the 31, and probably more depending on artist and availability.

Pretty sure who I am doing if we get to Part 3, so I am just going to sit with other peoples artists and playlists for most of my listening in the next couple months.

Neil had taken his stuff off Spotify a few years before the pandemic because he didn’t like the sound quality. He reluctantly put it back on after lobbying from fans. The Rogan angle was a way for him to do whatever wanted to do in the first place, justified in a way more understandable to some of his fans.

Rain on the Scarecrow-
from Scarecrow Album

My Favorite song from my favorite Mellencamp album is "Rain on the Scarecrow." Although only a moderate hit, (peaking at #21) to me it encapsulates everything that is great about Mellencamp as an artist and an activist. I have grown up in this world my whole life. Although we grew up "in town' many of my friends were farm kids and I always empathized with the toughness of the work and people that work made. Honest hardworking folks that truly make up the backbone of this nation. This song does a wonderful job speaking to the plight of those people. I think its his best work. Mellencamp has taken an active role in helping American farmers. Along with Neil Young and Willie Nelson, he regularly plays at the Farm-Aid concerts to help raise money.

There is a saying that if you want to make a million bucks in farming, just start out with 2 million" A few years ago I bought 40 acres myself and now run 10 head of cattle on it. Am I making any money? not really that much, but I got a freezer full of beef enjoying the lifestyle quit a bit. anyway this is what Mellncamp said about the song:

"I wrote this one with George Green too. Our songs always came about the same way: talk around the kitchen table. I had just played "Small Town" for him. He said, "I don't know why these towns are going out of business" – towns like Freetown and Dudleytown, Indiana. We couldn't figure out why they were disappearing. We did our research and wrote this song – Reagan had been using grain against the Soviet Union and all sorts of other things. Talking to people was heartbreaking. Nobody wanted to lose their farm."

  29. Mystic Eyes (Zegras NR)
  30. A Face In The Crowd (Zegras NR)
  31. Lost Highway (Zegras NR) - Hank Williams cover
That includes 13 songs not included in the list by @Zegras11. There are so many other great songs I didn't have room to include, including many not included in either of our lists. What a deep catalog!

You Don't Know How It Feels (Zegras NR)
This is the omission from Zegras' Petty list that I was most surprised about. It was the lead single from one of his most beloved albums, and immediately signaled that the Wildflowers record was going to be quite different from the Jeff Lynne productions. It's a favorite of most Petty fans I know.

You mentioned Lost Highway is a cover. Mystic Eyes is also a cover (Them, Van Morrison's '60s band). The Heartbreakers would DESTROY it live. Same with Fleetwood Mac's Oh Well (which Mike Campbell now sings in the current incarnation of that band).

My daughter, @sneveneleven, stole my thunder and took Scott Hutchison for this round.

I had a 31 ready to go but she beat me to the punch. We had a lot of overlap but she did surprise me with several of her choices.

He is the first artist we both loved. We saw Frightened Rabbit in concert together 3 times and she traveled long distances to see them on her own. She is their biggest fan.❤️

This is my top 31 by Scott Hutchison:

Neil had taken his stuff off Spotify a few years before the pandemic because he didn’t like the sound quality. He reluctantly put it back on after lobbying from fans. The Rogan angle was a way for him to do whatever wanted to do in the first place, justified in a way more understandable to some of his fans.

Yea, I forgot he already did this before. The whole sound quality thing with him... I don't know. It was pretty bad in the beginning (just like early CD's sounded bright). But for most things, it got better fast. These days I can't tell a difference between the stuff on his archives and Spotify / Apple / etc.

I can’t either, but my hearing sucks so I’m not a good judge of these things.

Neil Young‘s complaint on sound quality seem limited to Spotify. I honestly think I agree with him — I did a Spotify trial over the summer, but cancelled it when that was over and went back to Apple Music as I thought sound quality was superior with Apple, even with the premium level of audio quailty with the Spotify subscription (still listen to the playlists here, albeit dealing with the ads). (Although the last time I complained about Spotify, I ended up spending multiple posts talking about how I like being able to filter for harpsichord music on Apple Classical, so I’ll just leave it there.)

Throughout the latest post, Young — a longtime advocate of hi-fi sound— heavily criticizes Spotify for its lossy audio quality. “Amazon, Apple Music, and Qobuz deliver up to 100 percent of the music [quality] today and it sounds a lot better [than] the ****ty degraded and neutered sound of Spotify,” he says, adding that “if you support Spotify, you are destroying an art form.” Young implores his fans to “go to a new place that truly cares about music quality.”

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night SweatsAAABatteriesI Need Never Get Old

I find it fitting for the MAD countdown that this is my #1 song - but there was never any doubt in my mind. I penciled this in immediately. It's almost become my personal anthem as I've slowly marched towards turning 50 next year.

I will try to get my full list built in Spotify this week and share.

Also my favorite, although I didn't know very much of his catalog. This is a fun tune and the video is awesome. "Let's try it one more time."

As you can see most of my selections came from 3 albums - Collective Soul, Disciplined Breakdown and Dosage. I don't enjoy the "newer" stuff anywhere close to as much as these earlier productions. I do like the See What You Started by Continuing album a fair bit though. Only had 2 songs from this release but if you liked "This" or "AYTA" maybeyou'd like some additional tunes from it.

Other slow songs that were close to the cut
Crown
Bleed

And a more upbeat ones
Skin
Better Now
