The Russia Ukraine Conflict Thread (3 Viewers)

The massacre that occured at a military unit in Belgorod yesterday happened after one of the commanders said "insulting words about Allah", eyewitness tell Astra https://meduza.io/news/2022/10/1
That’s an unwise decision, tell the guys you kidnapped and gave live weapons to that they’re fighting a holy war, and then insult their religion.
Unwise decision seems to be the norm for the Russian government and Military.

Russia deploying waves of V-2 rockets Iranian kamikaze drones over civilian targets in Ukrainian cities today.

Straight up terrorists.

The pictures of citizens and cops trying to shoot the drones down with firearms are amazing.

Lots of posts of videos of Iranian drones hitting Ukrainian cities - some shot down, many others hit their targets
I wonder if someone can get word to Iran about what Russian commanders think about their religion, and what happened the other day, that might at least slow them down a bit.

Good conversation with Fiona Hill in Politico.

The idea that this is the first/most obvious event in a major reshaping of the global order is a tough message. The last one involved 30 years of global chaos, economic dislocation, and ~100MM dead.
Reynolds: In other words, even if Ukraine wins the war for its territory, even if Putin is somehow constrained or deposed, we’re still at the very beginning of a rethinking of the international order that those outcomes are not going to solve.

Hill: Yes.

Another one bites the dust.

A military commissar in charge of enlistment for Putin’s chaotic mobilisation campaign, Lt-Col Roman Malyk, 49, has been found dead in suspicious circumstances prompting murder investigation. His body was discovered near the fence of his home in the Primorsky region of Russia.

So “Der Komissar” is not in town now?

I’m sure that murder will be heavily investigated!

Russian demographics are really interesting. The number of combat aged men is already pretty low by historical metrics because they had a yuge dip in the birthrates right after the breakup of the Soviet Union in the nineties. So about every 25 years birth numbers crater again.

Meanwhile, Russian General Sergey “Armageddon” Surovikin sounds even more pessimistic, warning that “difficult decisions” lie ahead regarding the city of Kherson itself, as Ukraine’s counteroffensive nears. Future plans depend on “the emerging military-tactical situation.”

I wonder if he convinced Putin that they can't hold everything, so trying to hold on as much as possible while writing off stuff that is basically indefensible
