US Men's National Team (4 Viewers)

Pulisic has now played the most minutes of his career across all competitions this season. He is at 3147 minutes and still has 5 league matches left to add to this total, which is very likely to be the highest minutes he will achieve ever even in the future.

Weston, Jedi, Haji and Dest all did the same this season in hitting career high minutes.

I keep forgetting Reynolds. And keep forgetting that he's still young enough for the Olympics.

I think he been getting good PT in... Belgium? Anybody following him more closely?
I forgot about him as a potential backup at RB, even after I posted about him starting yesterday.

I'd be semi-excited about him being Scally's backup. It seems as though in terms of level of competition (and success there) and current form, he's not clearly worse than anyone else we'd be considering. And in terms of skillset, if you squint, you can view him as a poor man's Dest...and a change of pace from Scally if we need a goal late in a game.

That said, no idea if GGG will choose him above Yedlin or (god forbid) Shaq Moore...and although Reynolds has looked much more more dangerous attacking than Scally when I've watched them play, I'm not sure that there's anything in the data that really bears that out.

McKennie, Reynolds, Yow and Zahiroslam all started this afternoon. Weah on bench.
Weah in as a substitute and then gets the assist.
Fantastic assist
"Fantastic" is a wee bit higher than id rate it tbh. He was in a great open spot and did what everybody's taught to do from there... Drive it low and hard across goal and hope somebody's foot puts it on frame.
As a sub, first touch of the game, and being as important as it was, I'll stick with fantastic.

I'm wrong, you're right.

I didn't even realize that goal sent them to the finals, despite the loss.

Whoa.... I'm definitely not used to hearing that. Much more used to saying it.

Yes, dear.

I feel like this could work if GGG would commit to it (this assumes Adams will join Dest as out this summer)

I saw something similar online the other day and I like the formation -- in fact I think you have to do something like this if Reyna's on the field -- but I really don't like McKennie in that role. I'd prefer another defense-first guy. Finding a home for both McKennie and Reyna at the same time is hard IMO.

Catching up on some things after being gone for a while.

Absolutely gutted by the Dest injury. He was probably my favorite player other than Pulisic. And so important to us having any chance in the final 3rd. ACL is not a good injury long term for his style of play either, such a bummer.

To me the replacement answer is obvious. Weah. That still gives us attack from our fullbacks, and it's not like there's a step down from Dest defensively.

Up front, it gives us the opportunity to get both Reyna and Tillman on the field, even if there is some overlap in their preferred position.

I'm glad to see Tillman finally getting some real love in here. I've always thought he was underrated since he was on the Rangers, just out there producing day after day. Now he's out there in a champions league knockout game as the focal point of the offense when down a goal with elimination at hand, and they're funneling the ball through him and he's creating opportunities. They trust him with that, but we can't find a spot for him in the starting lineup on the national team?

Based on what I've seen this first half against Milan....

We should start Weah at RB in place of Dest. He's been solid against Leao on defense and that's a harder defensive test than he'll likely have all summer.

It's early in the MLS season still but there are a few guys that seem to be having breakout seasons. Quinn Sullivan came to mind but when I looked at sofascores I noticed a few others

Ratings over the last three years

01 A Morris 2022 - 6.78, 23 - 7.23 , 24 - 7.71
03 McGlynn 22 - 6.87, 23 - 6.96, 24 - 7.23
04 Sullivan 22 - 6.59, 23 - 6.69, 24 - 7.18
04 Brady 22 - N/A, 23 - 6.86, 24 - 7.17
03 Gutierrez 22 - 6.77, 23 - 6.92, 24 - 7.07

6.80 is intended to be league average. The scoring system isn't perfect but however it's scored, the comparison to themselves suggests big jumps here.

I'd like to see if Aiden Morris can play the 6 if GGG's system against bunkered CONCACAF teams. I don't think there's room for him as an 8.
hopefully a Euro club team sees some potential in him. He is better in MLS than many before him who moved to Europe.

My fear is that he could end up like Acosta or Miles and never get a chance to move before it is too late.

Besides Adams, is there any potential USMNT player playing the 6 in Europe?
Isn't Cardoso a 6?

Not sure he's a "potential USMNT player" in the sense that we'd want to consider him for inclusion on our 'A team' roster...but Tessman.
Just curious if we have anyone playing the 6 in Europe. Adams seems to be breaking down a bit and imo neither McKinnie nor Musah can play that role. In fact they both are better as 8s and competition for each other. Gio slots in as the 10.

Pretty sure both Cardoso and Tessman are considered 6s. Cardoso is having a nice first (partial) season at Real Bettis and I think is likely to be on our Copa America roster this summer (almost certain to make it if Adams isn't available). Tessman is having a very good season at Venezia (fighting for promotion to Serie A) and is more likely to be on our Olympic team.

Also Leonard Maloney plays 6 at least some of the time in the Bundesliga, but not sure what his current health status is. I think he'd be selected ahead of Tessman, but after Cardoso. Pretty sure those our current depth chart would currently be something like:
  1. Adams
  2. Cardoso
  3. Maloney
  4. Tessman or Aidan Morris

  1. Cardoso
  2. Maloney
  3. Tessman or Aidan Morris
Yep.

I'm back to being nattering nabob and not considering Adams for the US. He just can't stay healthy.

Richards has played the 6 a little this year, and allows for some roster flexibility.. but I don't think it's his primary best spot.

What I've watched of Johnny- he's good, but I feel like plays with another CMF who does a lot of the heavy lifting running coverage, allowing him to kind of float centrally. Not sure he's experienced or well suited for being a single pivot without that coverage help defensively. But he reads space and anticipates plays pretty well. And he's actually got a great eye in the attacking third- have seen him make numerous slick passes off good decisions to fire up an attack or chance.

Really wanted to see more of Maloney who I think is likely the best single pivot 6 available. His recent injury is sucky and poorly timed for the US.

This could be good in combo with either McKinnie or Musah. Gio ahead of them.

Yeah... Either of the Ms might be able to help. He just seems to need more help than Adams.

I'm thinking Gio will be in front of Weah on the flank.

Weah... Richards... Ream.... Jedi

I know this probably isn't right, but after watching Tessman look SO bad for the USMNT last year, he's a guy I don't ever want on our starting roster. And yeah, I know he's done well this year in Serie B, but still.

Johnny has had that look in the past too, tbh.

Although he's getting it done in La Liga, not serie B.

I haven't watched a minute of Tessman this season- feeling the same as you. But hopefully he's learning and improving.

Yeah, Johnny never impressed, but it wasn't revolting. Tessman put out one of the most unforgettably awful multiple outings for the USMNT. And, like you said, La Liga vs. Serie B. I'm fine giving Johnny a shot.
