US Men's National Team (9 Viewers)

I appreciate this broadcast.. complete commitment to not showing replays of anything.
Watching these over and over over the years makes me wish I had gone into live TV soccer directing/production. It's not that hard. But too many US broadcasts just suck.
This is a Concacaf run show. I don't know who Concacaf hires to provide the feed, but they are almost always terrible whether it be club or international competitions.

Gotta say, not sure US deserved that. The attack looked glacial for much of the game. Too much standing around with the ball, not enough trying to hit the overlapping/cutting run.
The US absolutely deserved that. Yeah, they needed to play it quicker more. But when they did they were carving up JaM, even before ET.

Unfortunately they also deserved to lose, given their continued awful final touch and gifting that early goal.
They were lucky to win. An own goal, in the 96th minute, on the last kick of RT? Not a long term winning recipe.

Am I happy they won? Sure. They snatched a victory from the gulp of defeat, as they were well past the jaws at that point.

Extra time? Sure, JAM was always going to struggle to return (begin?) to offense after bunkering for 98 minutes.

1. It's always better to be the CONCACAFer than the CONCACAFee.

2. I hope this game reminds us all that we still need CONCACAF specialists for these matches. For example, Balogun is way better than Brandon Vazquez, but Vazquez wouldn't have been bullied as easily as Balogun. And, of course, Kellyn Acosta, albeit near the end of his prime, plays a competent enough midfield, is more than solid on spot-kicks, and his ****house game is unparalleled. And how useful wold it be to have a punchable face like Matthew Hoppe's out there provoking yellow and red cards?

A thousand times this. Concacaf is practically a different sport than what you see at the World Cup. At least we mostly get a break from it this qualifying cycle and can focus more on the non-concacaf version.

Had people over watching basketball....so I was only casually following the game on my Ipad.

Clearly we stunk for the first 95 minutes and 10 seconds. Got extremely lucky. And at the end of the day, its the players kicking the ball.

But once again....the common thread is Greg. Whatever he's doing......its at least PARTIALLY to blame for this group CONSISTENTLY looking like less than the sum of their parts against an inferior side. Bare minimum....just like 90% of the time Greg has been the manager.

Gio, when healthy, remains irreplaceable. The only guy who can consistently unlock a low block with his passing.

OTOH, pairing him in a double-six with someone like Cardoso -- where Musah is the all-action athlete chewing up ground, and Cardoso stays at home in the middle ahead of the back four -- might be super complementary. But that's not a 4-3-3, so...
This is also more or less what you'd need to do to get Reyna on the field IMO. Put two defense-first guys behind him, and let him roam.

But then McKennie doesn't have a home.

I am not sold on Musah as a lone 6.
Agree 1000%. It's a terrible idea.

I still think that we need to transition to a 3-4-2-1 or 3-4-1-2.

Move Ream into the middle CB spot where he doesn’t need to move much, but just read the game. Put two physical, quick CBs on either side of him(Richards and Miles seem perfect for it).

That gets Dest up the field further. Maybe hurts Jedi, but I think he might be left out. Move Dest to LWB where he’s been playing for PSV. Play Weah at RWB where he’s been playing for Juve.

Adams and Weston in the middle.(Musah interchangeable based on injury/fitness)

Gio in the center AM role, striker of choice up top and Puli allowed to roam wherever the f he wants.

I think we’d be much more solid at the back…. And our guys would be in better positions to break a block.

I get looking for ways to have Reyna on the field. No one offers what he does.

But there's no way I'd run a lineup with Dest, Reyna, Weah, McKennie, CP and a striker as a front six. There's not a single strong defender in that entire group IMO.

Only works against teams set up in a low block and you need to crack it open with technical skill (instead of pumping crosses into the box).

Glad I watched hoops instead yesterday.

Exactly what I saw too.

"To me it's about speed of ball movement, combinations, particularly in wide areas to get behind them and hurt the defense," he said. "And we didn't do that enough. When we did, we created chances. I think the Expected Goals was 2.6 or something, so we had enough there but ... I don't think it was consistent enough."

Eta... And add the Nagbe-esque final touch in the attacking third.

Tab agrees with you.

GGG's results have been consistently just good enough to not get fired.

Unfortunately, the final product of this team continues to be so much less than the sum of its individual parts….. year after year.

You mean…. “To not get rehired, then after an EXTENSIVE search, be chosen as the best candidate”. SMH.

IMO, I think Earnie was intending to rehire him immediately after the WC but the Reyna fiasco prevented him from doing so.

And yet, most of the key players support GGGG

it certainly seems that way and it appears genuine in print but I always hold a smidge of skepticism because you would have to be kind of dumb to publicly complain about a guy that has been loyal to the players for the most part (ignoring the Reyna fiasco).

I saw a post WC comment from Scally saying he wished GGGs system was simpler. But otherwise haven't heard any other grumblings.. even from Pepi and Steffen who expressed their dissatisfaction about being left off the squad, but about the method of play.

Canada and Costa Rica qualified for Copa America as the last two Concacaf teams after wins over T&T and Honduras respectively yesterday.

US beat England 3-2 yesterday in U19 play. Noel Buck continues to play a lot for England's youth teams and started again yesterday.

On a much brighter note, recent one time switchee, Cole Campbell had a brace for the US in what I think was his debut. Campbell is currently in Dortmund's U19 team I believe.

It is a good day for the babies. Julian Hall is another big prospect, playing for NYRB.

Up until yesterday, he was blocked from debuting with the big club because of child labor laws in NY that don't allow people his age (U16) to work after a certain hour.

But they had a day game yesterday and he subbed in late in the second half for NY.

I believe he turned 16 just today so he does not have to worry about the child labor law any more. And today he also played for NYRB2 and scored his first of the season.

CAVAN SULLIVAN is on the bench for Philadelphia Union II

Pro debut is loading
Got an assist in his debut

what is the average age on the field between the two teams would you guess?

17-18ish?
Probably, but a couple of Union first teamers played as well who are early 20’s. Can’t speak for the Revs

I don’t know if this will be a one time thing or not due to circumstance. The Union proper only had 4 available field players on the bench last night due to international duties so it might have affected Union 2 as well.

I think there will be 2 changes tonight

Dest for Scally is 100% certain IMO
Reyna for Tillman will be very likely

I am unsure about any one else. I guess there may be some talk about Haji for Balogun but I think that will remain a second half sub.

Hopefully the US can win this in regulation time, I am unsure how many players are going to be able to go 120 minutes back to back on short rest.

Yes, this was Campbell's USYNT debut. This side is called a U19 but this is our CONCACAF U20 side (they play U20 to qualify for next year's U20 World Cup - 2005s and younger). Campbell is a 2006.

It was a diminished roster this week and I expect RBW, Tsakiris, Vargas, Raines, and Wynder to be on the U20 squad (and likely starters). I'd add Serge Ngoma into that list as well as he got a 12 minute cameo yesterday (he missed all of last season). Cremaschi and Esmir are probably going Olympics and so likely won't participate.

Romano claiming that Cavan to Man City is already a done deal. Not sure if that was common knowledge or not
He has been claiming that for over a week now. Must be extremely close and just not announced yet. There was an article posted here last week I think from the Athletic maybe who already knew where City was going to loan Cavan when he turned 16.

He's going to Lommel in Belgium when he turns 16 as he doesn't qualify for a work permit in England. Because his birthday is in September, I believe that means he will join Lommel in January of 2026.

5 changes to the lineup!!

Ream, Dest, Gio, Adams and Haji are starting in place of Robinson, Scally, Tillman, Musah and Balogun
I was thinking of the wrong Robinson at first...

But, otherwise - good changed I think. Haji, Adams and Gil all earned it in the semi-final, and Dest is the best option we have a RB.
