Short Novel

Novelist Jane Smiley suggests that length is an important quality of the novel.[1] However, novels can vary tremendously in length; Smiley lists novels as typically being between 100,000 and 175,000 words,[2] while National Novel Writing Month requires its novels to be at least 50,000 words. In part because of this wide variation, the boundary between a novella and a novel may be arbitrary and difficult to determine.[3] But while the length of a novel is to a large extent up to its writer,[4] lengths may also vary by sub-genre; many young adult novels start at a length of about 16,000 words,[5] and a typical mystery novel might be in the 60,000 to 80,000 word range while a thriller could be over 100,000 words.[6]

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America specifies word lengths for each category of its Nebula award categories:[7]

Short story under 7,500 wordsIt's not really that hard. Most books will clearly be a short story or not. If it's under about 100 pages, it's probably not a novel.

If it can't be published as a stand alone book, it's probably too short to be counted.

Best Choreographer Modern Dance

Bob Fosse is not eligible. But that would be an interesting category for another draft.

Modern Dance was initially a reaction to, a rebellion against, ballet. Today every dancer studies both ballet and modern dance, but at one time they were distinct.

Upon further reflection, I wouldn't care if someone drafted a ballet choreographer. Many Modern Dance folks crossover, and vice versa. But my criteria will make it plain what I'm looking for; the category is intended to highlight innovation and changes in dance since 1923.

1st, I want to thank timschochet for allowing a category that is dear to my heart. 30 years ago, at a Spoletto Festival event, I witnessed a famous NYC company peform, and I was instantly hooked. The category is Modern Dance as a performance art, not dance influenced by Modern Dance that found it's way into a Broadway musical or the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders routine or a pop singer's world tour. There is a pretty clear Tier 1 which can be found with a minimal amount of research. What matters above all else is originality and innovation - did that choreographer bring a new and fresh perspective and interpretation?

Just an aside, Modern Dance Choreographer is for a person and their achievment in Modern Dance over a lifetime - i t is not for a specific piece or even a company. You get the person's entire body of work.

ETA: If somebody was primarily Modern Dance but also did ballet, great fit. If someone was exclusively or known primarily for ballet and did nothing to advance or create innovative Modern Dance, bad fit.

Doug B had an excellent candidate if the category were Choreographer or Ballet Choreographer; this person is the biggest legend in the company we have season tickets for, and arguably the greatest ballet choreographer of the 20th Century. I wouldn't recommend drafting since the person has done no significant works in Modern Dance - yet at the same time, they did bring a more modern style to classical ballet. It seems criminal to not have them in the draft, yet it simply doesn't fit the category. No one has ever associated this great choreographer with Modern Dance.

It's definitely a difficult grey area with some folks. I can think of another person who studied under a Modern Dance giant, but the entire career has been devoted to ballet or incorporating modern dance elements in Broadway musicals. I absolutely love this person's work, but again, it's not a great fit - but it certainly closer than the one Doug B asked about.

I think I may have to pull a timschochet and flip flop on this, or at least be more open about making the category more inclusive. Be forewarned, though, the aforementioned are less than an ideal fit: 1) ballet person who incorporated modern elements into classical ballet, and 2) Broadway choreographer who brought very innovative Modern Dance to the Great White Way. Both will get dinged for being outside the scope of the category, and unfortunately the first person (a HUGE person in the world of ballet) just doesn't fit at all.

Don't want to spotlight, but if you PM I will give you a succinct thumbs up or thumbs down.

ETA 2: Hope that helps. If drafters object (besides timschochet, who has already expressed his opinion) to my insistence to staying within Modern Dance, perhaps we should change the category. I hope we don't, as there is a rich and deep field of candidates to be mined if we keep it primarily to Modern Dance as performance art.

Child Stars

So- child stars should be pre-teen. Any stuff they did after they hit those tragic teen years just doesn't count. Post 1900 only, please. I don't care if some five-year-old performed for Charlemagne or Kublai Khan.

Disco Songs

Disco songs should embody that era. Danceability counts, but so does quality. I love the cheese here, too. Just do me a big favor and don't pick "MacArthur Park". There is no version of that song that doesn't suck. I can even live with disco whistles, just not the stupid icing flowing down.

Worst movie with good actor

Off the top of my head:

Quality of the actor * significance of his/her role in the movie * horribleness of the movie = total score.

The quality of the performance of the actor in such movie may or may not factor in, but that's not the main point...A crappy Al Pacino is going to outpoint Ben Affleck's best performance of all time, regardless.

Best non-tragic news story of the last 20 years (excludes acts of heroism due to tragedy)----

With this one I will be looking at the effect the news had at the time it broke, what future things were or will be influenced by the story, and of course the story must hold some interest to the general population....most importantly me. I will also say that global stories will generally do better than stories that really only affect one place.

In addition to this as I said earlier I see many diffent angles that one could take with this....I look forward to a variety of picks.

Criteria for Holiday Special:

I'm looking for annual shows (or specials / events) that play specifically for a holiday. I expect a lot of children's specials to be drafted (and that's good - that defines holiday special to me), but it's not 100% limited to such.

The judging is going to be based on which I think is best / most important / etc. I was born in 1966, so my childhood spans most of the 70's. I know holiday specials.

Two "rules" - first, the show/event/special must be at least somewhat tied to the holiday in theme. In other words, sporting events like the NHL's "Winter Classic" are not holiday specials. Secondly, I want to see recurring to a degree (and if it's still in circulation, all the better). No one-offs.

Criteria for sandwich

I want a sandwich. It has to be on bread, a sub roll, or a hard roll. No Burgers. I will also rule out anything made by a chain - Egg McMuffin is not a valid pick.

I am also not looking for regional legends. I'm not driving to <insert city> for a <insert sandwich / sub / etc> (although perhaps the sandwich itself could be a valid pick, if it's something that's fairly mainstream. In other words, don't pick a Po Boy, because you can't get them everywhere. But other "famous" regional sandwiches are indeed available at almost any pizza place / deli nationwide.) PM me if this is not clear to you.

I'm more looking for things that at least have a prayer of being brown bagged to school or work, or at least available in some form at almost any deli / convenience store you care to go to. You can think small / traditional - that's fine. Hot sandwiches are ok, too.

I also reserve the right to rule some things too close to each other. Changing one ingredient on a sandwich may or may not make it a different type of sandwich.

The above is what you should/should not draft. Clues to winning..... how much JWB likes it (I like sandwiches a lot - all kinds), and how important/popular *I* think it is.

Edit - I thought I had this in, but somehow must have edited it out. A "sub / grinder / hoagie / etc etc" is NOT a pick. If you go that route, I want a TYPE of sub/grinder/hoagie/etc.

Greatest FFA thread of all time:

- The thread must be linked in your post -- I'm not going searching for some obscure thread that only you got a kick out of.

- It should be epic.

- Total number of pages/posts may be considered, but will not be major factor in judging.

- Hilarity will be the biggest criteria. This is, by definition, subjective to the judge -- deal with it.

Greatest MLB third baseman of all time:

- Pretty self explanatory -- nothing sneaky goin' on here.

- Total career performance will weigh higher than performance at peak.

- Post season (or lack thereof) will play minor (but not definitive) part.

- I don't care if he spent his twilight years playing DH, as long as he spent most of his career playing 3B.

- Defense will be a somewhat significant (but not uberly major) factor.

- Make your case!!!

Greatest NBA PG of all time:

- Pretty self explanatory -- nothing sneaky goin' on here.

Best junk food (brand name only)

From wiki: Junk food is an informal term for food that is of little nutritional value and often high in fat, sugar, and/or calories. Junk foods typically contain high levels of calories from sugar or fat with little protein, vitamins or minerals. Common junk foods include salted snack foods, gum, candy, sweet desserts, fried fast food, and carbonated beverages.

My slightly alternate take on this definition, and how I will judge the category. First, I am immediately ruling out all beverages. This is a junk FOOD category. I will not rule out, but will need some heavy convincing on the inclusion of fast foods (burgers, fries, etc.) When I think junk food, I mostly think snacks/sweets. Something you will sit down in front of the TV and gorge yourself on. Oh, and as the category title suggests, it must be a name brand. This makes it a little tricky, since there can be two practically identical items with different name brands, so choose wisely. Longevity of said junk food will be considered (how long has it been around), as will perceived popularity of said food. There will obviously be some bias here on my part, as it will be easier to rate MY favorites higher. That being said, I'm a pretty equal opportunity junk food consumer. Rest assured, there is no bigger expert than I to judge this category.

Best spin off television show

Relatively straight forward here. The show MUST be based on characters and at least some events from a previously aired show. Popularity/duration of the original is of no consequence here. It's all about the spin off. Length of run and popularity (ratings AND perceived by me) will be major factors. The spin off MUST include at least one actor/actress from the original playing the same character. Reality shows won't cut it (i.e. scorned chick from the Bachelor is the next Bachelorette, etc). Since this is my category, there will be bias. Deal with it.

Criteria for Best Duet Song:

- I will be considering a duet to be pairing that comes together to perform a particular song and not a duo that generally performed together as a "group" such as the Everly Brothers, Simon and Grafunkel, etc. It's possible the pair recorded more than one song together over the years, just don't have it fall into the later category.

- Make sure that one of the partners aren't just singing background. It should either be a harmonius pairing or one where the verses are alternated bewteen the singers.

- I'll look at a few lists, if any exist, to try and be somewhat objective, but naturally subjectivity will be involved.

- Popularity of the song will be considered, but will not be the over-riding factor.

- Quality of the song and how the pairing works together will be the main consideration.

- An interesting pairing that may seem odd on its face, but really works well could earn some bonus points.

Criteria for Best Cover Song --

It has to be a cover song.

Please link the original and the cover so I can listen to both.

Don't assume I've heard it and know how great it is.

Assume I'm a lazy ******* that won't go looking it up for you.

Bonus will be awarded if you select one of my personal favouritist songs of all time...it is a cover.

Make a case for why your selection should be included in a "Best of..." category. Even if it means stating it's on a bunch of lists, I'll at least know you made some effort.

If you pick something I deem sucky, prepare for a page or two of people calling me dumb and me telling you to GFYH.

Military Victories and defeats

As for the military categories, my only comment is I don't want to exclude or limit ACW battles. Therefore, Confederate victories and defeats are eligible. They were rebels and what they did was treasonous, but they started as Americans, and four years later we (effectivly) pardoned all combatants and welcomed them back into the fold.

American Poems

I don't think there is a definitive, or even close to definitive, list of greatest American poems. There are poems that are taught the most in school, but that doesn't make them the greatest. Poetry necessarily is great because of what it says to you, and so for American poem, I intend to give 50% weight to your write-up of your pick. Tell me why you believe this poem is the best, or what it means to you. There are poems that speak to us more than others for whatever reason. I don't want to see a list of things that y'all think you "should" take but what you want to take. Be very careful of just taking that one that you heard someone recite out loud a lot.

For the other 50%, you'll be judged on general reputation and my whim. If you happen to choose my or OH's favorite American poem, you're going to score well unless your write-up really sucks. In terms of write-ups, a Wiki cribbing is better than nothing, but won't score as well as a real analysis of what you think is great about the poem.

Mixed Drinks

For mixed drinks, my criteria will be even looser. I can't figure out a good way to judge this, since "deliciousness" is even more subjective in this case--for instance, I hate gin but don't want to score gin drinks low as a result. Cultural relevance and inventiveness will play a part, but largely I'll leave it to you to define your criteria and tell me why your drink matters. Your write-up will be responsible for the vast majority of your scoring, with an exception or two that I think need to score at the top no matter what. The only base criterion will be that the drink has to be composed of two or more parts, one of which is alcoholic.

Criteria for Greatest Professional Wrestler.

When making selections, I really want people to tell me why you feel your choice deserves to be made. As someone who knows a wee bit about the topic, I can view arguments in many different lights. Things to consider -- Name Appeal, Match Quality, Longevity & Relevance, Fan Appeal (Can your choice get the crowd to love/hate him/her) and Promo Skills. Some (most?) will assume that there are slam dunk picks for this category but with a smaller number of drafters, this category is wide open if people do their research.

Best actor/bad movie: As I said earlier, the formula for scoring this one will predominantly be: Quality of the actor * importance of role to the movie * suck factor of the movie. Quality of the actor's performance IN said movie might break ties, but is not a large factor.

Most Disgusting Food: I'm likely not going to have tried most (or any) of these. If I had ready access to them, I probably would. I am guessing this is also unlikely. The food selected shouldn't be listed just because it is edible, it should be part of a regular diet somewhere in the world. Don't select ####-encrusted mucous of the tibetan yak just because someone ate it once and didn't die. Bonus points for an actual preparation of a disgusting food.

Criteria; Best Martial Arts movie:

I have watched a TON of these, and like stated prior, I would be surprised if any drafted hasn't been seen, if they are prior than 2005. I kind of hope there will be a couple I have missed though. If I haven't seen it, I will watch it, and will most likely re-watch all of them prior to judging. Some key aspects to consider:

[*]The movie MUST contain martial arts (duh)

[*]The movie MUST incorporate fight scenes well, not just using fight scenes for action, not adding anything to the overall story

[*]Language DOES NOT matter

[*]Boxing movies are NOT martial arts movies (well, a case can be made, but I am giving fair warning that they WILL NOT fare well)

[*]Quality of story WILL matter

[*]Quality of fight scenes WILL matter

[*]Acting could matter as a tie breaker

[*]I want a motivation why you picked the movie, and I won't care about wiki quotes.

[*]It doesn't matter that the lead actor has made 15,000 movies and an internet list claims this is his best. I will look at lists as guidelines, but not gospel.

[*]If I can't stand the movie, it's been hyped for no real reason, or has annoying cast/lead, it will be downgraded.

[*]Box office success may not matter.

Criteria for best Hip Hop Album (in no particular order)

1) Longevity - does it stand the test of time?

2) Influence - did it greatly influence future artists? Change the way albums were made?

3) Quality - a great album has no filler. Skippable tracks significantly degrade the rating of an album.

4) Respect - this is esoteric but hip-hop is huge on respect. Is it widely hailed as a classic? This is admittedly somewhat similar to influence.

Criteria for Best Country Song:

1) Longevity (see above)

2) Influence (see above)

3) Quality - does it have superior lyrics? Superior musicianship? Superior vocal performance? A great country song doesn't necessarily have all of these but standouts in any category will be rewarded.

Criteria for Celebrity Chef category:

-Contribution to cuisine

-Cultural impact

-Talent (based largely on reputation since we won't have tried anything they've actually cooked)

-Celebrity/popularity

TV half hour Comedy of the the last 20 years

Criteria for this category is pretty straight forward. Show must regularly be 30 minutes in length (some 1 hour specials are OK). Show must be generally categorized as a comedy. Show must have aired at least one season between 1992-2012.

Some additional info... the show had better have been FUNNY! I know this is subjective, and my bias will be a factor, but this is BIG! The success of the show (length of run, popularity) will be a factor as well. Also, whether or not the show "jumped the shark" and how long it ran after the "jump" may adversely affect the rating. Finally, for a show that started prior to 1992, ONLY the seasons from 1992 forward will be considered

Don't get "novel" under 200 pages. At what point will you distinguish between novel and short story?Agree a bit with TU, too. More of a potpourri might be good.I'll either draft (watch out!) or judge depending upon when it gets going.

Back when we had a short story category, certain works were disqualified because they were actually novelllas or short novels. This category is intended for those works. As far as tweaking the categories, as I wrote, I'm open to suggestion.

For the Greatest American Draft, we had a category for Greatest Humanitarian. How about greatest/best community service organization? I'm thnking mainly of the charitable efforts of secular organizations you typically find in any American town, but maybe we could include faith-based efforts.

Since this is a learning exercise...I suggest adding greatest Professional Wrestling Match to go along with Best Professional Wrestler. I'm fairly sure this will be the last TimDraft to include Pro Wrestling so may as well double up and make the drafters earn their points.

I'd also suggest changing it to Greatest Professional Wrestler as opposed to Best Professional Wrestler now because (I know, you will laugh) there is a huge difference from what casual fans know to what wrestling fans know.
