Threads - The Meta Version of Twitter (1 Viewer)

The General

Footballguy
I'm not a power user of social media, have accounts just to follow stuff but don't post and only use a few minutes a day.

For peeps into this...have you tired it, how does it look on first glance? Advantages, differences, etc.

It works and looks clean. The financial tweets don’t immediately have 200 bots promoting crypto scams.

Main thing he needs to do is add a followers only tab and it’ll be good. Chronological order would be good. Basically give us 2021 Twitter without the bots (or fewer, I’m sure the troll farms will figure something out.)

"I deactivated my threads account already but it turns out you can’t delete your threads account *without also deleting your Instagram account* so maybe just don’t sign up!"

That seems like the hardest part especially if it gets a big user base.

Pretty impressive how low key they kept it right until it launched.

Just got it and I'm a fan. It runs through Instagram, so if you want an anonymous Threads account, you first have to make an extra Instagram account. If you want to limit your feed to only accounts that you are following, go to your profile > settings > notifications > threads and replies > "from people you follow." Way better experience.

It's nice for a blue check to once again mean "verified, notable account" and not "unfunny hack with $8." :)

I don't see a place for lists. Once they have lists, this could be easy move from Twitter.

10 million downloads in a day.

How do you do this? I’ve never had IG before so tried to do anonymous yesterday and it still linked to my Facebook account.

Zero desire to have an Instagram account so hopefully Facebook will suffice.

I don't ever tweet (other than occasionally sending sick burns at the Jets official account after a bad loss) sp the anonymity aspect (or lack of) doesn't bother me.

If everyone I care about posts there and it's clean, I'll give it a shot. Twitter only matters because everyone is there.

I already had a regular IG but not Facebook, so maybe the process is different - but on the IG app I long pressed the icon of my profile picture on the bottom right > "add account" > "create new account" > picked an anonymous username. Then I opened Threads and logged in with that burner IG account - I am now "potatocaustic" on there. :bowtie:

hmm, still getting various users on my main feed. need a following only feed.

It's definitely buggy - my feed keeps flip flopping between 100% accounts I follow and 100% recommended content now. Several wrinkles to iron out here but I think it has promise.

Reportedly 30 million signups as of this morning.

Dumb question probably but is it the case you have to either have Instagram or Facebook account (or both) to get on Threads? What if I just want to take a look and lurk a bit?

Will the people who use Twitter and don't care about politics/Elon have a reason to switch?
IMO not caring about politics is itself a potential reason to switch. Whereas Twitter aggressively fed me political tweets from all ends of the spectrum, the Threads algorithm seems much more tame. I'm currently getting a lot of sports and food accounts recommended to me. I could see that being attractive to a lot of folks who aren't interested in the political brawling on Twitter.

Hey this worked. Thanks.

Saw the list of all the data that the app will harvest (par for the course for Meta), not touching this with a barge pole. Seems to be timed precisely to coincide with all those people crying about not being able to use Twitter enough (usually a direct 1:1 correspondence to those who said they were leaving Twitter when Elon bought it), will be very surprised if this is anything other than a heavily censored AI data scraping stunt that lasts no more than six months when it gets nowhere near the critical mass of users needed for it to work

Threads sucks hard right now, but this is the first Twitter-competitor that people I know actually signed up for. Mastodon was very clearly DOA and BlueSky seems like wishful thinking too, but I could see Threads taking off if they make it more functional, e.g. giving you a my-follows-only option.

Same. And it's been one day. That's pretty massive. Mastodon and Bluesky have not remotely been user friendly. I doubt I know many people who know what Mastodon is.

I don't really know if people are thrilled about another version of Twitter, and I dunno if running into the arms of Meta is the answer. I don't think it really matters much.

We at the point where the owners are setting up grudge MMA fights. Just embarrassing and gross all the way around. If you are a fanboy for any of these people at this point, you probably should unplug.

Does zuck have fans? I’ve never seen anybsky say one positive thing about him. The Elon fanboys are creepy and weird. I guess they love him because he unbanned a lot of Twitter accounts.

not fans per say but I worked with two kids who were friends with him at Harvard and used FB when it was just a Cambridge thing

they went to write/found/spinoff a couple apps of their own, one for wine and another something about dogs or dogwalkers

anyways before he made bazillions and nobody knew who he was they thought he was OK (e.g., not the spawn of the devil) even though it was widely held he stole from the twins

(who IIRC made out OK in the end)

I honestly don't pay much attention to him, haven't used FB in 8 years or so, hated what it became

Musk is a whole other level of weirdness - do people think Zuck is somewhat normalish? sincere Q

Zuck is a socially awkward nerd that does socially awkward nerd stuff when his job requires he be in front of people.

Elon was a socially awkward nerd but loves to be in front of people and turned into a lunatic when he got a taste of power/attention.

Expand it beyond social media.

That guy from WeWork, Sam Bankman-Fried, John McAfee, Peter Thiel....on and on.

These tech guys are bad news.

I don’t want it to bring anything new. Twitter circa 2019-21 without the bots and violence and white supremacists and crypto scams is all I ask.
Exactly.

Twitter c. 2020 would be just fine.

Tweetdeck, verified users, no porn or murder randomly showing up in my searches, no armies of Russian/crypto/bro bots, basic account security, and etc.

The number of things that worked just fine and were then taken away to make the platform ****tier is just... I dunno.

I'm never an early adopter, so no chance I'm creating an Threads account yet. Hopefully in a few months they have the platform sorted out, and the people who want to leave Twitter have built some sort of critical mass over there.

I only use twitter for following fantasy football experts. If they move over, I will too.
Fbg is there. I assume others will join soon.

That was the only thing I missed after closing my Twitter account, so am looking forward to getting that instant news again.

Twitter/Musk is complaining Meta “poached” all the former Twitter employees and stealing all their good ideas is pretty rich considering how much he downplayed (or even made fun of) the importance of these employees when the mass-layoffs occurred.

Twitter was a severely bloated, unprofitable mess of a company

Layoffs needed to happen in order to (possibly) survive
