Direct Headline: Gavin Newsom should be Democrats’ replacement for Biden, top Dem strategist suggests

Newsom is 25 years younger than President Joe Biden...California Gov. Gavin Newsom may be the Democratic Party's strongest choice to run for president if President Joe Biden bows out, longtime party strategist David Axelrod says....Axelrod, who served as former President Barack Obama's chief strategist, made the comments in a Wednesday statement to The New York Times. The 2024 presidential race has been a burning question for Democrats, with no clear heir to Biden and many party members skeptical of whether the president could or should run for a second term...."If the president were not to run, it’s hard to imagine that Newsom would not be sorely tempted to enter the race," Axelrod said Wednesday....

..."Democrats need fresh, bold leadership for the 2024 presidential race. That can’t be Biden," lawyer and Democratic National Committee member Shelia Huggins told NYT last week...."I need an equivalent of Ron DeSantis, a Democrat, but not a 70- or 80-year-old – a younger person....Someone who knows what worked for you in 1980 is not going to work for you in 2022 or 2024...."

Direct Headline: 11 Democrats who could replace Joe Biden in 2024

Analysis by Chris Cillizza, CNN Editor-at-large 10:31 PM ET, Mon December 13, 2021

https://www.cnn.com/2021/12/13/politics/2024-democrats-replace-biden/index.html

Direct Headline: Democrats Are Solidly Behind Biden. There’s No Consensus About a Plan B.

None of the prospects would dare openly indicate interest, for fear of offending both a president who, White House officials say, has made it clear to them that he plans to run for re-election and a history-making vice president who could be his heir apparent. No president since Lyndon Johnson in 1968 has opted not to run for re-election.

By Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns Dec. 12, 2021

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/12/us/politics/biden-democrats-2024.html

If Biden, whom will turn 82 years old two weeks after the 2024 election, does not run, then CNN suggested the following 11 candidates could have strong interest and/or garner widespread Party support for 2024 POTUS:

Vice President Kamala Harris

https://ballotpedia.org/Kamala_Harris

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg

https://ballotpedia.org/Pete_Buttigieg

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA)

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN)

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D)

https://ballotpedia.org/Roy_Cooper

Former Mayor of New Orleans Mitch Landrieu (D)

https://ballotpedia.org/Mitch_Landrieu

Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo

https://ballotpedia.org/Gina_Raimondo

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D)

https://ballotpedia.org/Gretchen_Whitmer

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D)

https://ballotpedia.org/Phil_Murphy_(New_Jersey)

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D)

https://ballotpedia.org/J.B._Pritzker

Former member of the Georgia House of Representatives Stacey Abrams (D)

CNN releases an article about possible replacement candidates for the 2024 DNC ticket if something should happen to Biden in terms of running for reelection. (NY Times plays the middle showing the activist MSM is going to split along practical quid pro quo relationships to Biden and Harris respectively)

While there are lots of articles out there regarding this topic, it's interesting that Chris Cillizza ( Joe Average American archetype, light association with the sports world so that's some context ) sends out a rubber duck to test for sharks. It means Jaime Harrison of DNC HQ wants to know where moderates will stand with the "deep sleeper" candidates. He knows the lay of the land and projections already with Harris, Buttigieg, Warren, Klobuchar and Whitmer.

Gretchen Whitmer is on this list out of respect for her Vice Chair status at DNC HQ. Pritzker getting his name bandied about is likely a favor from Chris Korge who runs finance for the DNC ( read that as open money laundering and juggling bags of dark money)

But this is a chance for everyone to discuss the lesser brand name candidates ( think establishment Democrats from the Kirkland Signature, Great Value and Market Pantry range of appeal )  Ballotpedia links are associated with each candidate for background.

I think it's worth an exploratory dive to look at RB6 deep league types like Roy Cooper, Mitch Landrieu, Gina Riamondo and Phil Murphy. I'll weigh in later after giving this some time to simmer with the masses.

Discuss.

Seems like Newsom is a glaring omission from this list.

When I started this post originally six months ago, part of the controversy around Newsom was three fold

1) Just coming off his recall election

2) There were concerns about Nancy Pelosi's longevity, those concerns remain consistent.

3) Newsom had more problems with sleeping with his staffers and cheating on his wife, which threatens the suburban women voters block, which is where he has, or had, an advantage over other candidates.

If David Axelrod is promoting Newsom, it means Obama and Pelosi have cut a deal. The X Factor is where Susan Rice lands. Obama may force Newsom to take Rice in as his VP. I don't see how that helps this Republic, but nothing Obama ever does makes any sense from a political tactics standpoint.

2024 POTUS might be the "Battle Of The Governors" which will circle around

1) Pandemic response

2) Their wives. DeSantis stood by his wife when she had cancer. Newsom cheats on his wives and it's public knowledge.

3) Abortion ( DeSantis signed a more restrictive abortion bill much in line with the one in Texas)

If Newsom is pushed forward, it means Pelosi will odds on be the de facto POTUS if he wins. The trade would likely be the further protection of the ACA, which is all Obama cares about. This also means Stacey Abrams is too risky for get big donor support. And she can't run as Newsom's VPOTUS, the optics don't fit the Identity Politics narrative.

Corey Booker
I like Booker, and Sherrod Brown too.  Don't know a lot about Brown the politician, but he's certainly likeable.  I'd also be happy with Klobuchar and/or Buttigieg.  Buttigieg still needs some seasoning but he'd be a great addition to the VP slot on a ticket.  By far my favorite politician is Sheldon Whitehouse, but I don't recall him ever indicating an interest in running for president, but what senator would not want the job?

I like Booker, and he should run on legalizing pot. Any Dem should. Its a slam dunk and supported by both the left and right. He's from NJ where it was just made legal to buy/sell rec pot.

Sherrod Brown has always been impressive I thought in interviews. He’s a Dem who wins in Ohio. I thought he run last time but bowed out as soon as Biden announced he was running so maybe he just doesn’t want to do it.

I thought he bowed out beause the conventional wisdom was that the Dems did not want to lose a seat in the Senate, which Manchin and Sinema combined to effectively do the same.

Someone is going to vote for Booker because of legalizing pot?   It’s legal in 3/4 of the states now.

Rec pot is legal in 19 states. 37 have medical. But its still a schedule 1 drug and that causes many issues with the Feds. It needs to be legal at the Fed level. Its a winning position. Not saying it should be their only issue, but its popular.

In 2 1/2 years if things are still a disaster like they are right now, legalizing pot won't even be on anyones radar.

California has a $49 billion discretionary budget surplus.

Newsom looking better all the time.

I live in a state where you can still get arrested for possession (Georgia)

I don't know whether Newsom could be a serious contender or not.  Personally, I'd like it if Katie Porter started burnishing her higher office credentials.  She'd get my vote.

If Newsom ran against Trump he could always play Trump's assessment of him during COVID. At one point, Trump said he could see Newsom as the president in the future.

Katie Porter and Jamie Raskin are my two favorite reps, and Liz Cheney is third.  Would like to see all play on a bigger stage.

California had the worst, longest school closures. 50% of students don't meet state English standards. Only 40% are proficient in math. They're 50th/50 on literacy.

Yet Gavin Newsom flies to Washington to get an AWARD for "transformative improvements to education."

It's OBSCENE.

California's education problem goes back to well before Newsom and started with Proposition 13.   But at this point they are now spending more per student than they ever have, are instituting a universal pre-k class, providing mental health care to all students, and have committed over $8 billion to mitigate covid-related lost learning.

It is unacceptable for California to be ranked 44th in the nation in education, but these are "transformative improvements."

Gavin Newsom's San Francisco, California looks like this...

Newsom has been advocating for judges to be able to sentence addicts to mandatory treatment.   The legislature won't cooperate.

"I’m increasingly outraged by what’s going on in the streets,” Newsom says. “I’m disgusted with it."

Newsom implies he wants civil rights advocates to step out of the way, and for politicians to stop stymying efforts to bolster conservatorship under the auspices of respecting the rights of people who can't care for themselves.

"There’s no compassion with people with their clothes off defecating and urinating in the middle of the streets, screaming and talking to themselves," Newsom tells the Chronicle.

When they do these rankings, are they public schools only?

Cooper is a good call. Tim Waltz should be on the list.

By putting partisanship aside, North Carolina ranks No. 1 in America’s Top States for Business, with the nation’s strongest economy

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/13/north-carolina-is-no-1-in-americas-top-states-for-business.html?&qsearchterm=roy cooper

“We had a tough election in 2020,” Cooper said that day. “They tried to get rid of me, I tried to get rid of them. We ended up the same way we were. And I think we looked at each other and said, ‘This is what the people of North Carolina have voted for. We’ve got to work together to get positive outcomes for our state.’”

@gordon gekko Props for your RB6 called.
