TE T.J. Hockenson, MIN (1 Viewer)

If Hockenson has a good game this week against SF, he's likely going to have an excellent season. This is probably the toughest matchup on the schedule all season as far as how well teams cover the TE position.

beyond the boxscore

T.J. Hockenson was in a route on 81% of passing plays today — that is a big threshold at the position. Last season he was at 73%.

His 22% target-per-route rate is slightly below the elites (24%+).

>80% routes + >20% tgts/rt = Top-5 TE formula

Great spot.

This was the #1 team in the NFL against TE's last year. Couldn't have been more impressed. I think Hockenson is the TE I'd rather own from this game. I think there is an argument for him over anyone but Kelce.

As opposed to Higbee?  Well, ya.  Hockenson was the 5th TE being taken off the board in most redraft leagues this year.

We'll see what Waller does tomorrow, but he is and always kinda was in that "Kittle/Andrews/Hockenson/Pitts" Tier.  He just might be near the top of it instead of near the bottom of it.

I think he was talking about Kittle (vs Hock) (SF@Det)

@CoopAFiasco

These are the tight ends who lined up at WR for the most snaps this week:

1. TJ Hockenson (45)

2. Travis Kelce (38)

3. Kyle Pitts (37)

4. (tie) James O'Shaughnessy (32)

4. (tie) Logan Thomas (32)

Idk what Urban Meyer is doing or why but I guess we can't ignore it.

_______________

note: does not include Waller’s alignment last night, no doubt he’s on this list

T.J. Hockenson caught 8-of-9 targets for 66 yards and one touchdown in the Lions' Week 2 loss to the Packers Monday night.

Hockenson again led the Lions in receiving for the second straight week and scored another touchdown. His eight-yard touchdown in the back left corner of the end zone was a nice over-the-shoulder grab and gives Hockenson two touchdowns inside the 10-yard line to open the year. He's seen a team-high 19 targets through two games and is obviously Jared Goff's most trusted target. Hockenson will be a top-five TE1 for Week 3 against Baltimore.

He’s a weekly problem for opposing teams. Before the season, people on these boards were saying how easy it was going to be for teams to blanket him bc they have no legit WRs.

That’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works.

Not to mention... teams ARE putting multiple defenders on him.. it's still not stopping the Hock.

And then when teams put multiple defenders on or near him, other receivers are getting opportunities to get open and Detroits oline is giving Goff time.

Doubted this guy during the offseason, won't doubt again.  He's a good route runner, good contested catch guy and is nice after the catch.  Congrats to those who picked him and have been getting great value out of their TE

Drafted him wherever I could and not only that, but he's the cousin of one of my staff at work and I hope to meet him some time when he comes to town!

T.J. Hockensen caught both of his targets for ten yards in the Lions' Week 3 loss to the Ravens.

Baltimore's defense took Hockensen away as Jared Goff's main target. In fact, Lions TE Darren Fells saw more targets (3) than Hockensen on the day. It's enough to make Hockensen drafters nauseous. Fantasy managers need not worry about their tight end though. Most weeks, the Lions will be forced into pass-heavy game scripts that will inflate Hockensen's targets. He'll be a TE1, as per usual, next week against Chicago.

T.J. Hockenson said he goes "into every week thinking that I’m going to get doubled and I have to beat that."

It's hardly surprising Hocksen is opposing defenses' primary concern considering the Lions have trotted out wide receivers Tyrell Williams, Quintez Cephus, Khalif Raymond, and Amon-Ra St. Brown this season. Expect Hockenson’s target share to bounce back this Sunday against the Bears after he caught two of two targets in Week 3 against the Ravens, who clearly wanted to take Hockensen out of Detroit's passing offense. He remains locked in as top-4 option at the tight end position.

T.J. Hockenson caught 4-of-8 targets for 42 yards in the Lions' Week 4 loss to the Bears.

Hockenson technically rebounded from his poor Week 3, but he was still far quieter here than his fantasy managers were hoping. Jared Goff spread the ball around in the Lions' failed comeback attempt, with five receivers going for 30+ yards, but none for 100+. Hockenson had a strong 21% target share in this game, and there should be better days ahead. The third year tight end will be a locked-in TE1 against the Vikings in Week 5.

T.J. Hockenson (knee) is not practicing Wednesday.

It's a new injury for Hockenson who played his normal snap rate last week against the Bears, hauling in 4-of-8 targets for 42 scoreless yards on 82% of the snaps. He hasn't scored since Week 2 and has noted he feels the defense keying in on him as the offensive focal point. Hockenson's status will need to be monitored Thursday and Friday.

T.J. Hockenson (knee) returned to the open portion of Lions practice on the side on Thursday.

This injury did not impact Hockenson at all during Sunday's game, as he played 82% of the snaps. Hockenson has generated just 52 receiving yards on six catches over his last two games, and fantasy managers should probably have eyes on pivots for Sunday. Hockenson is probably still worth playing if he can gut it out just because of the lack of impact fantasy tight ends so far this year, but monitor the news for his status on Friday.

T.J. Hockenson (knee) returned to a limited practice on Thursday.

He remains on the TE1 line, even after a couple of clunkers in a row, should he be able to get past this surprise injury that popped up on Wednesday. Fantasy managers should have pivots in mind for him at this point, but it is reassuring news that he was able to get in a limited session. Hockenson is RotoPat's No. 5-rated tight end this weekend.

Oct 7, 2021, 3:56 PM ET

Lions head coach Dan Campbell said T.J. Hockensen (knee) has a "chance" to play this week against the Vikings.

Campbell's Friday comments on his star tight end paint a far bleaker picture than Hockensen's limited practice participation on Thursday. As long as he gets in another limited session on Friday, Hockensen should be able to suit up Sunday against Minnesota. Darren Fells, who out-targeted Hockensen two weeks ago against the Ravens, would presumably be the team's No. 1 tight end if Hockensen were sidelined. D'Andre Swift could be in line for a couple more short targets if Hockensen is out.

T.J. Hockenson (knee) is questionable for Week 5 against the Vikings.

Hockenson's status for Sunday appears to be in real doubt, to the point that a doubtful tag seemed possible following Friday's practice. Dan Campbell has stated Hockenson has a "chance" to play this week. If so, he could be in for high target volume as a shallow receiving option. The Lions will likely need to throw against the Vikings but have offensive line concerns with T Penei Sewell questionable and C Frank Ragnow on injured reserve. Jared Goff could be throwing even more shallowly than usual. If Hockenson can't play it could open up underneath targets for Amon-Ra St. Brown, but his absence would be a hit to the passing offense overall.

Good #Lions injury news to start your day: - T.J. Hockenson is expected to play - Penei Sewell to be active

What the hell is going on with this guy?  Is he hiding in the woods with Brian Laundrie?
The only explanation is that the Lions hate winning. They could have ended Zimmers career as a HC today but they even let him off the hook.

T.J. Hockenson caught 2-of-3 targets for 22 yards in the Lions' Week 5 loss to the Vikings.

Gutting through a knee issue, Hockenson had his second two-catch effort in three weeks. He now has just 74 yards over his past three games after totaling 163 across Weeks 1-2. Hockenson has to deal with enormous defensive pressure because of the Lions' lack of bodies at wideout, and it doesn't help that he's already banged up. Hockenson probably belongs in the TE8-12 range for Week 6 against the Bengals.

Oct 10, 2021, 6:05 PM ET

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports T.J. Hockenson (knee) is expected to play in Week 6 against the Bengals.

Hockenson has been in a slump since his strong start through two weeks. He hasn't topped four catches or hit 50 yards since Week 2 and only has one touchdown reception on the year. Still, he has played on 82 percent of the Lions' snaps over the past three weeks and the loss of Quintez Cephus could funnel more targets his way. Fantasy managers should continue to begrudgingly start Hockenson as a middle-of-the-road TE1.

T.J. Hockenson caught 8-of-11 targets for 74 yards in the Lions' Week 6 loss to the Bengals.

Hockenson's 74 yards qualify as a bright spot in a brutal Lions loss. The tight end saw a 26% target share the Lions were clearly intent on getting him more involved again this week. He accounted for 37% of the Lions passing yards, so that was a success in a game where the Lions had very little go right for them. Against the Rams in Week 7, Hockenson will be a highly volatile and risky option, also known as a low end TE1.

Lions did not list TE T.J. Hockenson (knee/ankle) on their final injury report for Week 8 against the Eagles.

Hockenson has been dealing with a knee issue since before Week 5, so it's nice to see him off the injury report this week. Hockenson is dealing with very poor quarterback play from Jared Goff, but is the clear top receiver in the Lions offense. The Eagles have been run heavy recently, which could limit overall passing volume, but if the Lions are forced to throw as usual, a healthy Hockenson can deliver a strong TE1 week.

T.J. Hockenson caught 3-of-3 targets for 35 yards and a touchdown in the Lions' Thanksgiving loss to the Bears.

Hockenson's 17-yard score in the second quarter was his first since Week 2. Hockenson separated near the goal line to get free in the end zone. It was an excellent route. Hockenson then headed to the locker room with a minor injury, but the ailment was never announced as he spent some time on the sideline exercise bike. Whatever it is, Hockenson has 10 days to nurse it ahead of Week 13 against the Vikings, where he will remain a mid-range, targets-based TE1.

Besides being a middling TE6-7ish since Week 3, TJ is just not playing good football rn. Costly penalties have become a weekly issue. Annoying af because he normally has a high football IQ and is a devastating blocker. His PFF grade has dropped from 75.4 last year to 69.7 currently.

Hoping the Josh Reynolds addition will open things up a bit down the stretch. YTD you only have to account for two Lions in your D game plan.

Worst receiver group the league, they need help all over the roster but WR is a priority. TJ gets no room to operate
Well actually…

He’s running free and Goff can’t get him the ball or doesn’t see him. Yesterday Jared threw a TD that traveled 44 air yards. That topped his previous high of 31 yards back in Week 2.

In 2020 he had Kupp, Woods, et al. His first deep pass completion (>35 yards) came in mid-October, 56 yard TD to Woods. His next and last deep ball completion came in week 17, 39 yarder to the TE.

Having one deep ball completion every 2-3 months is unheard of at the NFL level of competition. He’s absurdly bad at his job.

Explain again how the Lions got duped into this one?  I don't remember the details - I hope they got draft picks or $$$ also.

Besides receiving two-time Pro Bowl one-time Super Bowl Quarterback Jared Goff:

  • 2021 3rd Round (compensatory)
  • 2022 1st Round (Rams)
  • 2023 1st Round (Rams)
  • Rams paid Goff's 2021 annual bonus of $2.5M (delayed the date of actually completing the trade by almost two months)
Shortly after becoming a Lion, the team converted $20M of his annual salary to signing bonus, which freed up $15M in Cap Space to sign the rookie class and some low level veteran FAs. It also effectively made Goff a 2 year bridge QB instead of the initial plan of 1 year.

The Rams gave Goff an ill-fated 4-year contract extension in September of 2019. This is literally the first year of that $134 million deal, with cap numbers north of $30 million each of the next three years.

The Lions will cut Goff after 2022 (actually early 2023 in the new League Year.) At that point releasing him would save $20 million with a manageable $10 million dead cap hit. Anything  before then is essentially cost prohibitive.

Which means we may get to enjoy having Jared as our starter for 23 more starts.

The team is in a complete rebuild and with so many holes to fill it is not imperative they draft or acquire a replacement QB in the next draft, but they almost surely need to draft a franchise QB in 2023. The team has ten picks in 2022 and four 1st round picks in the next two drafts.

@BobbyLayne

T.J. Hockenson (hand) is doubtful for Week 14 against the Broncos.

Hockenson was downgraded to close the week and is not expected to play. Brock Wright, who was the only tight end to run a route behind Hockenson in Week 13, will replace the latter in the interim. Wright is not a fantasy option worth chasing.

Lions coach Dan Campbell said he is "hopeful" to get T.J. Hockenson (hand) back for Week 15 against the Cardinals.

Campbell referred to Hockenson and D'Andre Swift (shoulder) as day-to-day. Hockenson closed last week with a pair of DNPs before being listed as doubtful. He did not play versus the Broncos. Shane Zylstra and Brock Wright formed a committee at tight end to replace Hockenson. If Hockenson is able to return for Week 15, he'll clock in as a low-end TE1. Neither Wright nor Zylstra will be viable streaming options if Hockenson sits again.
