RB Brian Westbrook Visits Redskins (1 Viewer)

WASHINGTON (AP)—Brian Westbrook(notes) could become the fourth big-name veteran in a crowded Washington Redskins running back competition.

The longtime Philadelphia Eagles standout visited the Redskins on Wednesday. General manager Bruce Allen called it “a good meeting” and that he will “probably have some meetings down the road” with the 30-year-old back.

The Redskins already have plenty of experienced star power at the position. In addition to 28-year-old incumbent Clinton Portis(notes), they’ve added 30-year-old Larry Johnson(notes) and 29-year-old Willie Parker(notes) this offseason.

Westbrook played eight seasons with the Eagles, usually in the backfield with new Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb(notes). He had two concussions last year and was released in February.

Clearly Bruce Allen thinks he's running a fantasy football team in 2005.

He was not offered a contract by Washington and left to go visit Denver. The interview Westbrook had in Washington is thought to be a "courtesy" interview by local beat reporters.

If....and it is a big if...Westy ends up in Washington imo it will be He and LJ carrying thr load, Portis get's cut and FWP is the 3rd stringer.

IMO whomever get's Westy will get value. Yes there is the concussion risk coming off last season. But he is healthy and it was the head injuries that kept him out last year. He still has skills to be a difference maker for a team. He can still make big plays in the offense.

I am shocked New England has not emerged in trying to get him. He would fit right in.

Keep Maroney as your lead dog...sprinkle in Westy in your 2 minute offense and third downs...say goodbye to Taylor and Faulk (he has been a key player...but his age is really up there)...have Morris and Green on standby.

My 2 cents.

Update: the Redskins have offered Westbrook a contact.

Speculation is that Willie Parker is likely to be the first vet RB to be cut, since he has looked slow in OTA's and minicamps so far.
