QB Kenny Pickett, PHI (1 Viewer)

There are a number of things to really like about Pickett (he is currently my QB1), but this class of QBs is not especially exciting.  I think they hit the nail on the head: "his ceiling appears rather low" in comparison to the top signal callers from other classes.
I really don't like Jim Nagy much. Really liked reading his name I think, and dumb freaking quotes like that become the headline.

Guy, don't be throwing out Joe Burrow comps, when you know no one thinks there's a Burrow here.

I agree.  When I read those comps, it reminds me of what Senator Bentsen once said to Senator Dan Quayle:  "Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine.  Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy."

Kenny Pickett is no Joe Burrow.

Budget Cousins with wheels?  Ryan Fitzpatrick with less of an arm?  Marcus Mariota lite?

Point is I have no idea why he's anyone's number one even in this bad draft.  There's no upside like you'll see from from Willis or even Corral. Hell even his ceiling is fringe qb who will never get you over the hump.

Former Pittsburgh QB could see the possibility of continuing his football career at the pro level in the same place he played at the college level.

There are several teams reportedly interested in Pickett (6'3/220), as was evident during the Reese's Senior Bowl. Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was among those who could be seen actively watching and talking to Pickett during the showcase. Pickett said that he's "a fan of all 32 teams" until he finds his landing spot. Commenting specifically on the Steelers, Pickett said simply "the possibility of getting drafted there would be unbelievable." Is a quarterback like Pickett what can help propel the Steelers to their next Super Bowl? Time will tell -- in regards to both his landing spot and the future of Mike Tomlin's team.

NFL insider notes: Kenny Pickett a likely Panthers pick at No. 6 and more draft insight from scouts and execs

... several evaluators said that they could see him going in the top five, ...

... The Panthers own the No. 6 pick.

"I don't think he makes it past the Panthers," said one evaluator who has done extensive work on Pickett. "Their owner (David Tepper) is a huge Pitt booster. He hasn't invested draft capital in a quarterback yet. He has to know the Steelers like him (Tepper is a former minority investor in the Steelers). I think that's a fit."

One AFC scout said: "We think he's going to Carolina. That where I would mock him."

He probably can’t be worse than what they’ve been doing at qb

CBS Sport's Draft analysis Chris Trapasso says Pittsburgh QB Kenny Pickett's arm was a clear step weaker than everyone else's at the Senior Bowl.

On Trapasso's Purple Insider podcast, he said Kenny Pickett's arm was "like a clear step behind everyone else's", even compared to WKU's Bailey Zappe who many have said had the least arm talent of the Senior Bowl QB's and is often thought to be a Day 3 pick. Desmond Ridder, Sam Howell and Malik Willis were apparently far superior, with Pickett not getting enough zip on any throws, from short bullets to long bombs taking a extra split second to reach it's destination than anyone else. Pickett was a Heisman finalist and NFL.com's Cynthia Frelund just recently mocked Pickett as the first QB taken but if Pickett's arm is truly that weak that would put a damper on things. Not many other scouts and analysts have shared Trapasso's opinion on Pickett's arm strength, with most ranking Pickett on the same level as Howell and above Zappe, and it will be interesting to see if Pickett's arm strength becomes a concern.

NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah compares Pitt QB Kenny Pickett to former Seattle Seahawk's QB Matt Hasselback.

As experts believe this is not the most talented pool of quarterbacks in the draft, there really isn't a consensus on who the top quarterbacks are in the draft. A big example of how everyone feels different, some have Liberty's Malik Willis going as the first QB taken in the draft as high as No. 6 to Carolina, but NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah believes Kenny Pickett (6'3/220) is the first one taken off the board at No.18 to the Saints. In year one of the Saints without Drew Brees, the quarterback position was a mess as Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill, Trevor Siemen, and Ian Book all played the position this year. With a new head coach coming in, they want might want to start fresh with a new quarterback. Jeremiah says Pickett looks like an "athletic Matt Hassleback."  Before Russell Wilson, Hasselback was the Seahawk's franchise quarterback who led the team to Super Bowl. Any team would love to have that type of player that could lead them to the playoffs year after year and put them in the position to win a championship.

Pittsburgh QB Kenny Pickett is the current betting favorite to be the first QB selected in the 2022 NFL Draft per Fanduel Sportsbook.

Pickett (6'3"/220) sits at +175, just ahead of Malik Willis who is +200. Willis no doubt shot up after his impressive Senior Bowl where he was able to show off his rocket arm and incredible running ability. Sam Howell also had a solid Senior Bowl and comes in third, though at +400 is well behind the other two. Rounding out the top five are Matt Corral (the popular preseason and pre-Senior Bowl pick) at +500 and Desmond Ridder at +2000.

Pittsburgh HC Pat Narduzzi said of former QB Kenny Pickett that hand size is being talked about because there are no other negatives.

Narduzzi is speaking from a bit of a biased angle after spending time with Pickett and having a chance to witness his greatness in 2021 that nearly led to him winning the Heisman Trophy, but he does have a point - sort of. Pickett's arm strength was knocked by some scouts during the Senior Bowl, along with his accuracy in some rainy practices, which may have been as a result of his reportedly small hands. The Athletic's Ben Standig wrote that Narduzzi was quoted saying, "you're not going to find any negatives. That's why they got to pick on hand size, I guess." Pickett's hand size will be a fun offseason narrative throughout the draft process, but while he may very well end up being the best quarterback of this class, to suggest hand size is the only negative to his attributes would be incorrect.

According to Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network, Pittsburgh QB Kenny Pickett, who has so far avoided having his had measured, will take measurements for the draft.

One of the biggest knocks on Kenny Pickett so far has been his supposedly small hands. When measured his junior year, he was measured at 8 1/4", which would be smaller than any Round 1 QB since Michael Vick. Pickett drew some news when he decided to not have his hand measured at the Senior Bowl. It's been reported that the double-jointed nature of his hands will affect the measurement, and Pauline has reported that Pickett is trying range-of-motion exercises to get a better measurement and give him a better grip on the ball. That's in preparation for his hand to actually be measured at the combine, barring any changes or setbacks.

Pittsburgh QB Kenny Pickett has the highest odds at +120 to be the first quarterback drafted per FanDuel Sportsbook.

10 days ago, Pickett (6'3/220) had his odds set at +175 and has seen them rise. He currently sits above Malik Willis at +150 and Sam Howell at +600. The combine will really separate these quarterbacks, especially when it comes to measurables. The biggest point of contention with Pickett is his hand size. If the rumored number holds true at the combine where Pickett has said he will have his hand-measured, he will tie for the smallest hand at the QB position ever.

Any team in the top 19 picks, please take him.  I saw him every week in Pittsburgh, and he was a good college QB, might be ok in NFL, but is not that guy.

Pick #32 or #34? Do you want to have a built in 5th year option is really the question.
Good question at that point. We know the Jags are not picking him at 33. But they might take the WR or defensive player the Lions want there.

If the the Lions are serious about him they will get that 5th year since any rookie is stuck behind Goff for one year.  But I think the Lions will pass and push it down a year where the QB crop might be better.

Pittsburgh QB Kenny Pickett says reported have talked more about his hand size than any teams have during formal meetings.

The media cycle always gets a bit silly during Combine season, with measurements discussed ad nauseam when they might not matter all that much. According to Pickett (6'3"/220) that's been the case for his much reported on hand size. The measurement hasn't happened yet, but according to him team's haven't really brought it up all that much in official meetings. The hand thing has been essentially the only widely reported negative for Pickett, and if NFL teams aren't caring about it, it really clears the way for Pickett to be the first QB off the board.

Pittsburgh QB Kenny Pickett official hand measurement comes in at 8.5 inches.

The much anticipated hand measurement has finally come in for Pickett, and the result is 8.5 inches. That's better than his junior year measurement, so the hand stretching exercises seemed to have worked. 8.5 is smaller than the average QB, and with the NFL ball being slightly bigger it may have an effect. Then again, the last time the media made a big deal about hand size it was Joe Burrow, and that worked out fine. On the other hand, Burrow measured at nine inches, which is half an inch bigger than Pickett. Honestly if Pickett works out or busts it probably won't be because of hand size, but any time he fumbles it'll probably be brought up. For the record, Pickett's 8.5 inches would be the smallest of any first round QB in a long while, with the average being 9.7 inches. The smallest starting QB hands right now belong to Taysom Hill of the Saints, at 8 3/4 inches. Everyone else is nine or above, with the measurement topping out at Russell Wilsons 10 1/4 inch hands.

Hand size isn't a dealbreaker by any means, but Pickett isn't a special prospect, so any kind of red flag(especially one that can't be fixed) is gonna hurt him. I don't think Pickett is a 1st rounder right now.

I don't believe he's a special prospect either - but I also can't fathom why hand size should be a red flag.

Whether its actually true or not, its believed smaller hands lead to more fumbles, especially in colder weather. Its anecdotal, but I'm 100% confident it matters to a lot of GM's.

He fumbled a lot in college and now its a bigger ball.  Also the weak gripe takes away from velocity of his throws.  Its a concern for sure,  how much, I dont know but its def something to go back and research.  The 2 gloves things scares the crap out of me

Oh?

According to Fantasy Pros Kevin Coleman, he does not have Pittsburgh QB Kenny Pickett being drafted in the first round.

Although released right before the combine, there's is one mock draft that is down on Pickett (6'3"/220). He didn't have an awful combine, but as Malik Willis continues to impress scouts and Desmond Ridder definitely raised his draft stock, we could see Pickett take a little dip. Pickett's hand size was the worse kept secret going into the combine and the 8.5 inches will scare some teams, so he's going to have to prove those measurements mean nothing. He needs to put up an impressive pro day if he wants to be thought of as some team's future franchise quarterback.

17-5 as the starter in Pittsburgh the last 2 seasons...we are talking the Pittsburgh Panthers college football team, not exactly the strongest program in the country the last 2 or 3 decades despite Arron Donald being a HoF player from there, I do remember a kid in '83 that went late 1st round and was routinely bad mouthed and we saw how that story turned out, was the guy's name Dan Marinara or something like that?

I think Pickett is one of the better QBs to gamble on late 1st/early 2nd this year.

The Athletic's Bruce Feldman writes that one NFL assistant he spoke with at the NFL Scouting Combine said former Pittsburgh QB Kenny Pickett is "a second-round guy who will end up getting picked in the first round."

The NFL assistant Feldman spoke with further added that Pickett will go in the first round because "there are no other first-round guys this year." It's quite the indictment on not only Pickett, but the quarterback class as a whole that Pickett may more or less be a first round pick simply because of team needs. What's more interesting is that most analysts suspect three to four QBs could go in the first round, while this scout suggests none should. Pickett ran a solid 4.73 40-yard dash at the combine, but isn't lauded for any discernible traits.

Sports Illustrated's Daniel Kelly has given Pittsburgh QB Kenny Pickett a fifth-round draft grade.

Kelly, who spent time as a scout with the New York Jets named 15 potential first rounders who he believes are being overvalued, with Pickett topping the list. Kelly said of Pickett that he's "a one-hit wonder who looks jumpy in the pocket. Prior to 2021 he threw a high interception-to-touchdown ratio over his first four college seasons (39 TD/25 INT)." He closes out his analysis of Pickett by calling him a "career backup" which is a far cry from the consensus opinion on him. Pickett won't go in the fifth round in this year's draft, nor will UNC quarterback Sam Howell, who he gave a fifth to seventh round draft grade.

Pittsburgh QB Kenny Pickett threw for a ACC record 42 touchdowns in 2022.

Pickett (6'3"/220) was hands down the most improved quarterback of this draft class. In the preseason he wasn’t in the conversation of being highly drafted, but after this year, he’s projected to go in the first round. Those 42 touchdowns came out of nowhere as he didn’t have that many in his previous years combined (39 career touchdowns entering the 2021 season). Some of his measurements at the combine have scouts scared to make him a franchise QB, but he’s proven his veteran leadership by helping the Panthers win the ACC title, and those intangibles you can’t teach.

Pittsburgh QB Kenny Pickett has the fifth best deep ball accuracy since 2019.

Pickett (6'3"/220) had just 30% of his downfield passes be considered uncatchable (lower is better here), fifth lowest in the past five years. That's behind just Zach Wilson, Mac Jones, Joe Burrow and Grayson McCall. With the exception of McCall, all of those other guys were top picks in the draft, so Pickett is in good company. Pickett has been mocked all around the first round, with many considering him to be the QB1 of the draft. Deep ball accuracy is an increasingly important part of these vertical NFL offenses, and it's good to see Pickett has that down.

Pittsburgh QB Kenny Pickett led all P5 quarterbacks with 6,715 passing yards.

The progression of Kenny Pickett in his final season led him to have the most passing yards over the last two seasons. Pinned as a heavily running quarterback before the season, he stepped up his passing game and it helped him become one of the top prospects in the league. Pickett finished second in passing yards this season (4,319) and passer rating (165.3) amongst draft-eligible quarterbacks and has been impressive during the redrafting process.
