As the title suggests, you can only pick ONE. However, you want to measure it. Your favorite? Maybe the most technical. Best lyrics?

What is the greatest rap song ever ? Please post a link if you have time.

I just think this song is the embodiment of rap. It's 35 years old and was never ranked higher than #3 on any chart. The song speaks for itself imho.

My choice is:

LL Cool J's I'm Bad.

I break rules.

For my first forty years

The Choice Is Yours

Everything about a modern rap song. A jazz sample, social consciousness, a nod back to a commonly used refrain in the vernacular in a break, everything.

In the past decade

Cycles To Gehenna

Was going to post this in otb's thread about Dale, but I'll let otb's dedication stand alone.

...2000 out the weekly under "Cycles to Gehenna"
Gets him floating over 20 buses, fireproof and festive
Corners like a too-tired tiger so a too-tired rider
Can accumulate a few excited fibers to assign
Knows no Zen in the art of maintenance
Only as the orchestrated patron saint of changing lanes baby
Here is how a great escape goes
When you can't take your dead friends name out your phone...

...It was less an act of hubris
More a lonely hearts club at the helm of a magic bullet
Away on a relentless bid for rarefied inertia
Rattletrap forks married to the patchy terra firma
Ursa Minor getting warmer
I crowbar into the pecking order
The dreck between the whores and Betty Ford-ers
Hug a double yellow spine
Knobby rubber like a rat on a rope
Those little ****ers run on passion alone
This is the product of a DIY inadequate home

Grabbing a cabin in the-****-outta-dodge
Actin' a savage in the shadows of Rome
Traffic amassed against insufferable odds
Fashioning gallows out of plastic and bone
I got the motordrome walls of death splintering under me
All-city galvanized bikes white knuckling
Bright light, tunnel kings tuck in the devil
PS - I wrote this on a self-destructing memo

I'm taking the exemption here.

Simply can’t do it. Would have a very hard time narrowing it down to a top 5. But LL is in that group, just not I’m Bad (though thats great too)…..

Love both of these. mob deep's beat was my ringtone for a while.

There's obviously a ton of obvious ones so I'm just posting ones I like that aren't as commercial. Obviously there are more popular ones. Scenario from tribe is probably my all time but I give you

One of my favorites was always Midnight by Ice-T

my favorite: https://youtu.be/q9jCsOCfUUg RIP Dave

The greatest? this is going to be hard. I think one song comes to mind due to the lyrical display: Poet Laureate 2: https://youtu.be/w99pK5NNhxI
He also did another song Poet Laureate infinity which is 5 different 100 bar verses that can be switched between at any point and it still stays on rhyme and content which is pretty impressive.

If greatest is like the song that is the epitome of rap? Rappers Delight? T.R.O.Y.? It aint hard to tell?

Man, De La just makes me feel so good down in my soul. It’s so pure. Just art.

I’ve been waiting to rebuy their stuff until they got control.

Great choice. 6 in the Mornin’ would be in my top 5 all time.

A lot of people don’t know he came before NWA. I didn’t for a long time.
side note. Ice T did a song with Game on his last album that was pretty dope: https://youtu.be/e4LMlXc0tfs

True. It always has.

Favorite De La Album? For me I think it’s Stakes is High. I can listen to it straight through w/o skipping.

3ft high. for me growing up and the time it came out i just wore this album out. Its my favorite for sure. then De La is Dead then stakes is high. though i wouldnt argue with someone saying Stakes is their best album. Because its outstanding. They dont have a single bad album in their discography. Even the Nike album was dope.

Will probably get raked over the coals for this one, but living in Small town Iowa I had never even heard Rap until this song came out: Walk this way Run DMC It turned me on to Rap in my high school days and I started looking for all the cassettes. (we are really old). NWA, 2 Live Crew was great for a rebellious teen who thought he knew it all and is parents knew nothing. The more cussing the music had the better because it drove my parents nuts.

Honestly, walk this way is really the first song to really start to move hip hop towards the mainstream. It was a really important song. I think you would be hard pressed to find someone our age that doesnt know it.
