***Official Philadelphia Phillies Thread*** - Castellanos ****s wit Philly (1 Viewer)

Jayson Stark suggested on Missanelli last week that Madson might not have good offers and would have to take the Phils' arbitration and try again for FA next year. You'd think that Boras would know what he's doing, but an interesting though. (I forget who, but Stark mentioned one Boras client who had this happen in the past couple of years.)

That would work out great! If for nothing else he could be a chip to move for something later on in the year.I'm really interested to see what they do with Rollins though assuming the reports that the Brewers are interested.

Phillies are reportedly talking to the A's about a Gio Gonzalez deal that would include Dominic Brown.

Rumor is swirling that if they get this done, that they would turn around and trade Hamels.

trading hamels would be a big mistake, imo
What if they could sign Aramis and get a stud bat in return for Cole? It seems like they need to improve their lineup more than anything else and I think Gio would be a very solid # 3.

The Phillies have hired their former general manager as a special consultant, the team announced Tuesday. Wade will scout at the major- and minor-league levels and assist in salary arbitration. Wade, 55, was fired as Houston GM this winter. He still had two years remaining on his deal with the Astros.

Does this thread heat up at all the closer we get to the season?
What would you like to discuss?
How will Vance Worley do this year? I see him regressing with a 4 something ERA.
You wont see the 3.01 this year but if he can improve on the walks a bit I can see him staying under 4. He seems to have a good mentality and the ball jumps out of his hand. I can't see him with 10-11 wins and a 3.75 era this season.

Yes, it will....
Just curious because it seemed dead.
My guess is that most fans are sort of like me, which is rather subdued right now. Last year's regular season was a cruise and then the playoffs ended so abruptly and crushingly that it's hard to know exactly what to think. I think that most of us expect them to win the division again, despite the improved Marlins and the Braves continuing to be strong, but then what will happen in the playoffs? Will there be enough timely hitting? All of the infield spots have health questions. Can Utley get his production up somewhat? Obviously not to his peak levels, but a little more power? Will the improved bench pay dividends? I just think that there weren't any big splashes this offseason (Papelbon was nice, but how much better than Madson, really?), so there is no particular thing that everyone is excited about and there is a bit of a wait-and-see attitude with everything else.

I'm anxious to see a full year of a healthy Hunter Pence. I want to see what he can do in citizens bank.

I think he'll be just fine. I don't expect the average to stay that high but the power should be better IMO.The health of Utley, Rollins and Polancoe is what scares me.

Polanco especially. I wanted Charlie to put Valdez in for game 5 last year because you just knew Polanco had nothing left. Valdez was a better player at that point which is just showing exactly how hurt he truly was. He was a total liability in the lineup that ended up costing us.

There was a ton wrong with game 5..especially line-up wise. I think the bench will be much better for us this year and I don't think we'll be hurt too bad by replacing Polanco with Wiggington. Now if/ when Utley and Rollins go down, in addition, it could be very bad.

Utley leaves camp to meet with specialist about his knee. Wonderful.

http://espn.go.com/m...knee-specialist
Utley's fully healthy days are long gone. It's upsetting that they didn't prepare properly for this. Season was over early October, he's had 5 months to heal up and nothing has changed. What's that tell us? From what I've heard he has no cartilage left in his one knee, I doubt a specialist can change that.

@ToddZolecki

Halladay, Lee, Worley will open season in Pittsburgh. Hamels to start home opener.

Dubee explained. “Cole has had more experience,” said Dubee, asked why Hamels gets the home opener. “Hell, he’s pitched in the World Series. The big flag is out there. Not that Vance can’t handle it, but it’s a little bit of a hectic day. Any of our guys deserve to pitch the home opener or the opener of the season. This way it lines up where Cole gets it. It splits our lefties. It doesn’t put Vance in that situation. Cole is more accustomed to pitching with a lot of hoopla around.”

I like it

Opening day line-up:

1. Victorino

2. Polanco

3. Rollins

4. Pence

5. Wiggington

6. Mayberry

7. Ruiz

8. Galvis

9. Halladay

I'm going with a 4-2 Phills win!

I'll take it!
Your prediction should have gone in the "Bold Predictions" thread. Pirates scoring 2 runs off Halladay
I think the 4 runs for the Phils was even bolder. :lmao: Runs are going to be in short supply this year. Anyway, a usual outing by Doc. 2 hits in the first inning, then none for the rest of the game. Good to see Paps get the first one under his belt, we're going to need all arms on deck with the lack of O.ETA: Rollins starting in the 3-hole, so what's he do? Bunts for a base hit of course in the first inning. We've only wanted him to do that when he was leading off for the last 5 years and now he does it today. :wall: : :hot:

Roy doesnt have great numbers on opening day so I was going to give him a little lee-way with the 2 runs lolDespite not seeing it yesterday I believe our offense is going to be better then most think. As long as Charlie keeps the line-ups changing and keeps guys fresh I think we should be fine. And I totally agree with you about Rollins...I was shocked to see it and happy

This lineup is pathetic. Were there really no solutions in the off-season to upgrade the offense? I'm sure they had to speculate that Howard and Utley would not be back for a while.

I'm not even sure Utley is going to help much...at this point he has to be a downgrade in the field. Maybe he can come back and play some 1st until Howard (who's the main piece we're missing) comes back.

Not trying to be a fatalist but it was a good run. We may even still win the division this year but this Phillies team is pretty much done. The lineup is old and beatup. We have no one in the minors coming to save them. The bullpen is weak. Whats the point of a primo closer if you can't get the game to him? The starter's are great but Cole is as good as gone next year and Doc and Lee aren't getting any younger.

So it was a good run. We won a world series. We won 5 division titles. The best era of Phillies baseball I've ever seen. But its over.

I realize that every local broadcast team is hired to promote their team, but this Nats broadcast is pegging the homer meter big-time. They're really buying into the whole "Natitude" thing.

Wow our bullpen blows.
I left after the 6th last night. That was the inning Lee was PH'd for.We left the stadium (humblebrag, out the front entrance from the diamond club :P ), that takes you out to Pattison. We literally walked half a block to the truck because of Hnadicap Parking, By the time we got to the truck and started to pull away it was 5-4 mets:lmao:

This is painful. I'm almost hoping they become sellers because our farm has nothing coming to save the aging dynasty. With a second wild card, I doubt we sell but this is a pivotal year for the Phillies.

I doubt they blow it up. They're two games under .500 and six games back. They could still make a run if Howard, Utley and Halliday come back. But another factor is that they just don't have a lot of assets that will bring much in return.

I know they won't blow it up. the 2nd wild card made certain of that. Pretty much only a handful of sellers this year. They should get top dollar though for weaker trade bait.

Who would you trade?Hamels would command a lot, but can you afford that now?At this point, Halladay's trade value can't be too high.Victorino would be tradeable, but not sure how much you'd really get.Bueller?

Hamels and Victorino are expiring contracts. They'll probably qualify the Phillies for compensation picks under the new CBA if they leave, but if they're moved at the deadline, the new team won't be eligible for compensation. This will really depress the market for rent-a-players at the deadline.
