Mixed drinks (1 Viewer)

At home - vodka with La Croix pamplemousse

Out - Deep Eddys Ruby red vodka and soda.

Both are good.

I'll never have "a" drink. Variety is the spice of life. Sometimes I want a dirty martini, sometimes a Manhattan, sometimes a Margarita, sometimes a Ramos gin fizz. Different locales/situations call for different beverages.
This.

There are times when a perfect martini hits the spot. Times when a well crafted Old Fashioned or Moscow Mule is called for.

Generally I'm whiskey neat or on rocks, or a beer. Sometimes cheaper whiskey (evan black) mixed with cola if I'm going to be drinking a lot but don't want beer.

Mostly a beer guy. For cocktails: G&T, Dark & Stormy, Moscow Mule are probably my favorites.

This should be a thread of its own but we can just expand this one.

Christmas: Scotch in large quantities. Not every year but when I was depressed in the past this was the easiest. I keep a bottle of 18 or 25 in the glass decanter just for the major holidays.

Dec/Holidays: Irish coffees are good anytime but they especially are good in the holiday season or when it is cold.

Spring/Easter: Vodka works for me and goes with a lot of different refreshers. Tonic, OJ, Cran, Pineapple, anything mixes well.

Summer: Florida...margaritas and more margaritas...and then some more margaritas. It's just so hot. Mojitos for a lot of folks but I prefer a Jimmy Buffet special.

Fall/Winter: Shots like Jager and the like to wash down a good beer, preferably IPA.

White Russian.
I don't really do mixed drinks anymore as I far prefer beer, but if I do, there's a couple I'll drink even though they are quite girly.

Toasted Almond -- Very similar to a White Russian, but much better, IMO. It's 2 oz equal parts of Kahlua, Amaretto, and Cream (can use milk) served over ice.

Amaretto sour -- Simple, but I enjoy the taste.

Corpse Reviver II

1 part Hendrik's gin

1 part Grand Marnier

1 part Lillet Blanc

1 part lemon juice (preferably Meyer)

Few drops of absinthe

Shake gently in ice, serve in martini glass with Luxardo cherry. Fantastic.

If you want to have a lot of options at your fingertips, here is a way to do it. My buddy taught me this.

The Base: have a selection of whiskeys, bourbons, scotches. I have Jack Daniels and Bulleit Rye.

The Requirement: Antica Dry Vermouth

The Variety: have a selection of liqueurs: green and yellow chartreuse, Grand Marnier, Cointreau (not the same as GM). Don't buy crap like Triple Sec.

The Dash: have a variety of bitters, or at least regular and orange.

The Finishing Touch: fresh lemon or orange peel, pinched around the glass and then tossed in the cocktail.

Use the 3-1-1 rule. 3 parts base, 1 part vermouth, 1 part liqueur, dash of what you like. Stir in a shaker, pour into cocktail glass. Play around with any combination.

I'm 43.

I like these too....with a lime....but recently heard some dudes poking fun at another guy for ordering them. They said it was a feminine drink.
Obviously

Can all of you recommending cocktails that are great if made well throw out a few that are great even when not made well?

Never had one but you convinced me to try it out. Very nice - really enjoyed it.

I'm not as experienced as most in here but typically anything with more than 2 ingredients gets in to the "need to make it well" zone. Most of the others (gin and tonic, rum/whiskey and coke) - those are the easy ones as you can keep adding the ingredients together to taste. You can really #### up cocktails with a lot of ingredients if you don't know what you are doing or if you aren't following a recipe. Also, being an alcoholic will also help you not caring about how well they are made.

wedding reception test, it won't be made well but can you still enjoy it? Irish whiskey and ginger seems pretty fool proof.

Jack and Coke more often than not. Old fashioned as well but I've had a few bad ones (surprised me it was easy to mess it up). Generally I prefer whiskey drinks in general if I'm not just drinking beer. - 36

The Last Word

3/4 oz Gin (I like Nolet's)

3/4 oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur

3/4 oz Green Chartreuse

3/4 oz Fresh Lime Juice

I F!n love these!

It is. Don't ever drink this in public again.

If Im someplace where I doubt their ability to concoct a proper drink, usually just keep it simple... you have the simple 'the ingredients are in the name' drinks like whiskey sour, or maybe a brand whiskey and a splash of water or sour, scotch and squeezed lemon, gin 'n tonic.

After that, if I cant explain the drink in 5-10 seconds, its too much to ask and risk. i.e. Ill order a Tom Collins..' then say either NOT a vodka collins' or list the simple ingredients... brand of fin, some lemon/suger/lime mix (not being picky, assuming the worst) and a splash of soda. Easier yet order a gimlet, two ingredients.

Old fashioned guys - how do you make yours? I looked online and got confused by the various methods.

Oh and G+T for me (43)

Awesome cocktail that doesn't get enough love. Same goes to the Corpse Reviver #2.

Yep, even a fairly simple and classic drink like an Old Fashioned can be garbage. I've mistakenly ordered them at places that were really more beer/wine places (bartender=person that opens a bottle) and definitely regretted it.

I love whiskey drinks and it blows my mind the easy ones can be screwed up, but they are. Often.

Makers/Herman Marshal Rye if I can get it.

Simple syrup (I eyeball it)

Ango bitters (couple dashes)

LUXARDO cherry (no maraschino), orange peel (not slice)

If no luxardo cherries.. no cherry.

Old Fashioned's and G&T for me - 39.

Same here except I usually go with Bulleit Rye or Buffalo Trace.

Used to drink G+T all the time, but a good old fashion hits the spot as a pre-dinner cocktail every time. The only real way to mess them up is by putting soda in it (it happens). When I'm making them home I have all the time I need, so I actually use two glasses. Pour 3 oz of makers or your bourbon of choice (I like bulleit too) over ice in one glass to chill it. In the other glass, I put a tiny tiny splash of water and then muddle the sugar cube with it. I don't like using simple syrup as a sugar alternative even though it's easier. After muddled, I drop in 3-4 dashes of angostura bitters. Then I squeeze (not muddle) an orange wedge and a cherry, and drop those in the bottom of the glass. Then I pour the bourbon and ice over everything, shake a bit, and enjoy. Sometimes may need to add some water to smooth it out a bit. Depends on my mood haha

Oh and if I'm out and I feel like behaving like an absolute idiot instead of a gentleman, I'll do whatever orange vodka there is and Sprite, and also give myself a raging headache the next day. But they're just so good

I mix it up depending on mood and venue, but those are my favorites.

also...

Gentleman jack (or single barrel), rocks (1-2 cubes)

decent rum, rocks, lime twist

summer.... margaritas, rum drinks, sangria

winter... darker bier and red wine (sometimes gluehwein)

About two years ago I discovered Luxardo cherries. Pricey, but worth every penny. Holy crap they're good. Completely agree with you on them vs. a maraschino.

Strawberry in the Rye

Muddle two strawberries in a pint glass

ADD

.5 oz fresh squeezed Lemon Juice

.5 oz Honey Simple Syrup

2 oz Bulleit Rye

Shake with ice until cold. Double strain into a tall glass and top with Ginger Beer

For those of you who occasionally will delve into a creamy type drink:

Buffalo Trace Bourbon Cream + Root Beer (50/50) on rocks is a little slice of heaven

Perfect timing for this thread. I have been a Rye and Ginger or beer guy for a long time. I'm 45.

I recently had bariatric surgery, and will have to cut beer and carbonation from my diet

A lot of these drinks are intriguing and I have never had most of them.

Can someone tell me what the "bitters" taste like in an Old Fashioned? The drink looks like something I would like, but have no idea what the flavor is.

I did have a nice sipping drink not to long ago at a casino. Some guy ordered one, and it was then ordered by the whole table.

Was 50% Kahluha, 50% Frangelico served in a brandy snifter. Was filled to the brim with shaved ice and then the liquors were added. Very smooth

It all depends on the situation but these are pretty much the only drinks I'll have. In an effort to mitigate hangovers I only drink vodka.

Kestel One & soda - anywhere the bartender is rushed/amateur... Weddings, sports bar...

Belvidere martini - the drink of choice with a nice meal. Ideal with a steak or heavier dish.

Belvidere mule - I like to make these at home when friends stop by. Spicy ginger beer and a half lime squeezed per glass.

Screwdriver/belvidere - if the wife happens to being home a bottle of freshly squeezed OJ.

Vodka/LaCroix - my at home go-to after a long day.
