Do you know where you are staying? Will you have a rental car?

I went to college there jn the 90s and it was.....okay in parts. Some good food for sure, a few spots with great live music. But I went back in 2013 after many years away and the city was just way way worse than I remembered. Potholes everywhere, dilapidated buildings, abject poverty. Crime, corruption and a city government that fights constantly with the state's has left the city in a horrendous condition. There are a few "haves" and a hell of a lot more "have nots". It's sad how much the city has deteriorated.

Now, that's not to say there isn't anything to do but just know what you're getting in to.

If you get any free time, check out Vicksburg and the war memorial there. If they offer a tour, take it. It's an impressive site steeped in important history that changed the tide of the Civil War. Also riverboat casinos.

Haven't been there in years other than to pass through, but only a couple hours away, so we get their news stories here.

Keep your doors locked.

I was offered a job there back in 2005. When I looked at what Jackson was/is, I immediately turned down the job. Zero regrets.

Don't have a motel yet. Yes. rental car. Was hoping it wasn't like you described but thought it might be due to location. I'm meeting attorneys. Will get some advice from them before I go.
thanx!

If you grab a place to stay by Millsaps College you'll probably be fine - especially if you need to meet people downtown, it's very close by. The city used to have some charm and really nice, older homes but I don't know if that's still the case. You can also look at staying out by the Reservoir ("Rez" RIP Docks) or in Ridgeland. Safer out there and some pretty areas. The city itself is tiny so getting around isn't hard.

I can come up with some restaurant suggestions too if you want them. I think crawfish season is in, so that could be fun if you find a place that does a Boil and has live music going. Great BBQ there too and I've got a killer idea if you like gyros.

jackson had about 80 homocides per 100 000 residents in 2020 meaning it was only a little worse than st louis which is a total crapfestival of a city and here is the worst part i think the entire city might only have 1 panera jeez louize i mean at that point why even bother take that to the bank brohans

Worked there in late 90s. Most of my friends still there now all live north of town in a place called Madison. Jackson was always an old money town. If you enjoy gambling, Vicksburg has that too. I learned to count cards while playing over there during those years.

I lived in Ridgeland when I was there. I’ve heard Northpark and all of County Line Road area has gone to hell. Haven’t been there in quite awhile. Seems as all the folks who were there that I knew moved to Madison.

You ever hit the Red Hot & Blue out that way? Loved that joint. Used to work there. Great job for a college kid.

Yep, I remember that place. I used to live just a mile or two from there. I could walk from my old apartment behind the Ridgeland post office to Northpark.

A few restaurant recommendations - and there are many excellent restaurants here.

Char
Pig and Pint. Fondren part of town, where liberal artsy meets blue bloods.
Aladdin Mediterranean Grill. (Fondren, again) Chicken Tecka, don't ask me questions.
Koestler's Prime - $$$$. You can satisfy your escargot appetite here. Seriously, get the ribeye and steak fries and ignore the rest... well, maybe a house salad with the creamy parm to pass a little time. $100 plus beverage and tip.
Sambou's African Kitchen - Recently opened and I have not checked it out yet. Lots of rave reviews. BONUS: It's located on the sacred grounds of the former Red, Hot, and Blue.
**** of the Walk - safe Southern fare. Catfish or fried chicken (get the catfish).
Jerry's Catfish House - ate there once, 20 years ago, and liked it a lot. Serious catfish business going on here. Inconvenient location.
Mama Hamils - if your in the mood for a 4,000 calorie buffet of indulgent deep South cuisine. Smoked chicken thighs and bread pudding for the win.
Sal and Phils - a bit gritty and often awesome. The garlic-butter shrimp bowl w/ the vegetable medly is divine. Shrimp are huge.

Can't speak to the nightlife, but unless you're in your 20's with raging hormones, it's best to low-key it. The Barnes and Noble in Ridgeland is A+ (embedded Starbucks), and it's near several restaurants, Koestler Prime included (walking distance between the two). If you're a bibliophile, Lemuria Books ... Ooh, I'm about to go spend $60 on a Harry Crews book.

If you have time:
If you want more information, I'm here. I'm an FBG, which means I don't get out a lot, but I know people who do.

EDIT: Mississippi Braves (Double AA) schedule.
EDIT DEUX: I've got a couple of Frisbee-golf links too; maybe, not sure.

Not sure what lodging options you are targeting, but there are a lot of business class choices in Ridgeland, particularly around Highland Colony Parkway.

One last edit: The traffic on I-55 (north-south) is super-tame. If you secure lodging in Madison-Ridgeland, you're 5-minutes from I-55, and probably 10-15 minutes away from downtown Jackson; can't speak directly to morning rush, but it should not be that bad, especially southbound.

It pleases me greatly to read Sal and Phils is still going strong. Man, I LOVED that place! I know Que Sera is gone, what about Cherokee?

Hal & Mal's was fun and great food. Ironhorse was always solid.

I got to experience the original Cherokee Inn when I first moved here. Eventually they relocated to a nicer, cleaner place off of 55 (EDIT: BUT DEFINITELY NOT BETTER), near Books-a-Million (which is still kicking), but eventually they closed for good. Was a big fan because they reminded me of my favorite hole-in-the-wall burger joint in San Antonio, Casbeers.

If you're a bibliophile, Lemuria Books

Glad to hear Lemuria is still around.

Broad Street Bakery was downstairs from Lemuria, a great place for breakfast, lunch & coffee -- they still in business? I'm blanking on the name of that whole building ... used to be a lot of stuff in there.
I have not been there in forever, but I'm pretty sure they are still kicking. Banner Hall the name you are forgetting. It's like a tiny two-story mall with about 10-15 shops, where Broad Street Bakery and the Lemuria Books are the mall anchors.

A little more detail.

While the metro area is not that large (you can more or less get from one end to the other in about 30-35 minutes), you have essentially three choices when it comes to locale, and you can get from one to the other pretty quickly.

  1. Jackson proper - downtown and Fondren area. Extremely nice in places, but in close proximity to some dicey areas too. Plenty of great restaraunts. There is the situation with Jackson water, but restaurants take solid measures to deal with it. I make it a point to patronize them in these trying times. Having dinner at Bravo tomorrow (not downtown, but clearly a Jackson fixture). Lots of downtown lunch options - It's the state capital, and lawyers got to eat.
  2. Madison-Ridgeland - 10 miles north of downtown. I call this place home. Standard suburban stuff going on here with excellent restaurants. If you have to kill an evening or two, the already mentioned Barnes & Noble located in the Renaissance shopping center is excellent for eating and strolling. There's an Apple store there too. It's nothing to brag about, but if you're just trying to chill and kill time, here you go. Oh ####, there's a Malco Cinema Bar and Grill here too. I've never been there and totally forgot about it. They opened right before stupid covid hit. Gonna hit it soon.
  3. And then there is Brandon/Pearl - 10 miles east of Jackson. Pearl is a place with an above average concentration of Pentecostal churches, but in its favor, it has the double-AA Mississippi Braves (great minor league park) and they're across the street from Bass Pro Shops; not special, but's it's a great place to stroll. And if you want to golf, and I don't, my son loves the Pearl Municipal Golf Course. It's ridiculously cheap, and pretty too. Check out the menu prices.

Man I loved Ironhorse. We had recruiting parties at Hal & Mal's. I was also a fan of Two Sisters Kitchen downtown. I believe it's closed now.

Yep, I remember that place. I used to live just a mile or two from there. I could walk from my old apartment behind the Ridgeland post office to Northpark.

99.9% I lived in that same complex. 2001-02 time frame ... sounds like you were gone by then.
The Trace Apartments is where I lived, called it Post Trace for awhile I think. I lived there '96-'98.
Yeah, near the Post Office. It's secluded and convenient. For the first eleven years I lived here (2001-2012) I worked just around the corner at the Southern Farm Bureau Casualty building on County Line (did not work FOR SFB, but I dated one or two).

Southern Farm was one of my clients when I lived there. Used to go to their headquarters out there on the belt. It was a cush job. Books always in order, cute girls everywhere.

NGL.

Water pressure is back! But you can still be murdered here. And still no red Hot & Blue. Though there is a medical dispensary right where the old one on County Line road was!

Thanks for the excellent insights.

Midnight Sun, Catwalk, Corner Bar and the Dutch Bar....quarter pitchers, bring your own cooler in after 1am, bars close at 4am. A fight would break out into the parking lot or into the street more often than not. Dudes would make sure to take their shirts off first. Crazy place.

Have you ever met someone and asked them where they are from. After they told you, you then thought to yourself "Wow, I didn't think anyone actually lived there."

I feel like Jackson, Mississippi is one of those places.

Point of order: I'm not from here. I've resided here for 22 years.

I don't think I have thought that. I think that would mostly depend on your demographic and the demographics of people you're most likely to be talking with and the size and location of the city.

According to the most recent ACS, the racial composition of Jackson was:

  • Black or African American: 82.47%
  • White: 16.19%
  • Two or more races: 0.7%
  • Asian: 0.33%

Going to be there in a few weeks for 3 or 4 days. Work related. Never been there. Any experience there good or bad is appreciated.
thanx
Go ahead and wreck your health
Go play your hand, you big-talkin' man
And make a big fool of yourself
