I had this ranked 12, but as the countdown has gone on and I've had time to rethink, this really should be in the 5-8 range for me.

I would never have thought of Jaws as a horror movie so I am not sure if I would have listed. I do think it probably should be classified as a horror movie (it's no Young Frankenstein) but It wouldn't have entered my thoughts as a horror movie.

There's a reason this is the original summer blockbuster. The heir to creature-features like King Kong and Godzilla but more terrifying because great white sharks do exist and do eat people when they can. Brilliant pacing makes you fear the shark long before he's shown on-screen. The mishmash of personalities set out to sea to save the town gives the movie great depth and tension. And the monologue by Robert Shaw referencing the real-life events of the U.S.S. Indianapolis may be the best soliloquy in all of horror films.
So what are you trying to say, that Godzilla doesn't exist?

Just waiting to see if I Spit on Your Grave will make it to #1 or #2
Lol, the director of the remakes (not the original 70's) was just attached to a horror script I'm hoping to take to Shudder & Netflix where, if it's made, it will eventually be completely left off best of lists like these.

I'm struggling to understand any opinion that Jaws isn't horror. It evokes the exact responses in audiences that a horror movie sets out to do. If there's a single movie that sparks a fear of the ocean, it's this one. Is it because it;s Speilberg? OR because it made a lot of money?

For some reason that's one horror movie that just doesn't click for me. Solid movie, don't hate it like TCM. Don't think it's bad. Quite the opposite. I just find it solid and not spectacular like most do. With 1 exception, I am generally lower on John Carpenter movies than most.

For me, I hadn't thought about it too much while doing my initial pass, but it wasn't in my top 40. I guess I would just refer back to IK's post and thoughts about SotL. This is the movie I referred to that is in my top 5 all time movies, so it would score quite high on the movie quality line, but for my initial thoughts it wasn't "horror enough", but honestly haven't thought about it much after that. There are a few that I don't really have a great reason for leaving off, love a lot, but still don't feel right putting on a list of horror movies - Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, Jaws are the top ones I was thinking about.

It's one of the reasons I struggled with the list. If I admitted it's horror, it should be at the top if it's one of my all time movies, right? But it still didn't feel right having it in my top 5 horror movies list and I didn't want to have movies like that in the 40s-50s either.

It's not that I don't think it fits the horror category, it's just that I don't immediately think of it as a horror movie. I am not sure why that is.

I agree. I saw it for the first time maybe 5-10 years ago. It was fine but I didn't think it was the greatest in any way. It was a movie. That's about it.

I dunno, man. Admittedly, I got connected to this movie when I was a kid, and I'm sure that has something to do with it. But some of the SFX in this movie still look awesome today, in 2024. Not all of them of course, but that spider-head? Come on -- that's phenomenal!

Edit: And also, the ambiguity of the ending. I don't like that sort of thing most of the time, but it 100% fits the theme of this movie.

Same, never crossed my mind for my list. No imdb horror tag either...

My Dad took me and my brother to see Jaws on the opening weekend. I was 11 at the time. He was definitely not prepared for the line and I remember moments where he wanted to leave but thankfully he stuck it out. One of my favorite movie experiences ever. Such a great, fun movie. It never did really freak me out about going in the water though. We would go to Rockaway Beach or Jones Beach all the time.
I saw it opening weekend, too, and I was 10. I loved the movie, and it did impact my going in the ocean after I saw it. My siblings and I would go far out in the water on our rafts prior to seeing Jaws. My mom used to scream at us to move in closer to land. After seeing the movie, we wouldn't go past where the waves were breaking. I still think about Jaws when I go in the ocean, and I always have an uncomfortable feeling doing any water activities in the ocean or intercoastal waterway where my body is in the water over my head. This movie would be in my top 5.
:shark:

Maybe part of it with Jaws is that I came to it much later in life, so I didn't experience it at the time and I wasn't scared by it when I first watched it.

next time y'all watch Jaws, pay attention to how the color yellow is used: it's a precursor to a shark attack/sighting.

- guy throwing a stick to Pipet (the dog) has a yellow shirt
- the little Kitner boy was on a yellow raft
- Chief Brody's truck is yellow (when he shows up to find Chrissy Watkins' remains)
- the barrels Quint uses to hunt the shark
- the helicopter patrolling the beach is yellow
- flashlight Hooper is holding when he finds Ben Garder's head (and shark tooth "the size of a shot glass") is yellow
Username checks out.

I do wonder if that was an homage to The Godfather and oranges.

This one surprises me. I love it because of how well the tension builds up as we don't know who is the thing. I love how it ends, and the practical effects are great. I understand people not wanting to sit through TCM and hating that movie, but ones like this I find more interesting. Like you said though, maybe it's just something with most of Carpenter's work in general.

I think a simpler explanation for me would be what are what scenes are my favorite from the movie and/or why do I love watching it. I was thinking about it during the back and forth about Aliens too. I don't watch that for the face hugger scene or the scares - I have Alien doing that better. I watch mostly because Hudson, Vasquez and the rest are awesome and the action kicks ***. That it has a few good horror scenes is a bonus.

Similar to Jaws - the best scenes for me aren't directly about the shark. #1 is the Indianapolis speech. Right after that for me are scenes like the encounter with Mrs. Kintner, the first time Quint and Brody meet, things like that. The attack on the Kintner kid and Quint are awesome example of horror scenes, but again for me it's more the bonus cherry on top not the primary driver for watching.

Jaws didn't do that for me but I saw an overhead photo of the coast of New Smyrna, which is a little over an hour north of me. That water showed several sharks just swimming among all the people there.

Yikes! I used to go to either New Smyrna or Cocoa Beach when I lived in Orlando. This was post-Jaws, so I didn't wander far into the water.

I think those scenes and others are some of the things that make it such a good movie. One of my favorites is when Brody is feeling down (I think Mrs. Kintner slapped him in the face after her son's funeral prior to the scene) and his son starts imitating what he does. The movie took the time to focus on some of the characters, and not just be about trying to catch the shark that was terrorizing the community. It is horror, though. Jaws is a monster shark eating people. The shark really isn't shown that much until the very end. The music is great at building up the suspense of when Jaws is about to attack, and you can feel the fear without seeing the shark chew up a person. Being that it really can happen adds to the fear. I remember jumping when Hooper is underwater searching that man's boat and the man's head rolls out. Good times!

So Jaws was the first horror movie I ever saw in the theater. That scene scared my Mom so much she almost pulled my arm from its socket and threw popcorn in my face. Saw it at least 3 more times in the theater and that got someone every time.
Good times indeed!

I get that, but I think the point I and a few others are also making is that some of these debatable movies are also dramas, actions, comedies, etc.. That's a bit what keeps it off my list I think, and the fact that it's the other stuff that I love the most. For me it's just not enough of a horror for a high rating, and it's too good of a movie to be rated #40 of anything so it was left off initially.

From my thoughts to your keyboard. Top 10 movie all time for me, but I didn't want to shoehorn it into a horror list.

I don't get to October and think, "time to watch Jaws!"

I remember jumping when Hooper is underwater searching that man's boat and the man's head rolls out. Good times!

Me neither, probably because I'll have watched it 2-3 times over the summer already.
