DFS advertising (1 Viewer)

doesn't really ever come close to anything remotely like that.
Assani - I am watching with your video blog and wondering what the intent is - I mean what are we to get from watching this?

I can't really blame him for not giving up any of his info. He is essentially depending on that stuff for a living, publicizing it could sacrifice his EV.

Seems like purpose of the vlog was just to give people a chance to follow along on his 'journey', similar to what he had here with his poker thread back in the day.

Gotcha. I do have a question though.

Do all successful gamblers live like that? You know, that lonely nothing-on-the-grey-walls, unhung Walmart mirror, 80s Big Lots pleather recliners, and no other furniture in the room look? Seriously, the guy's gotta be in a lawn chair in front of a folding card table.

Is it because all the money needs to be available for gambling?

Since DFS is so much about keeping up on the news in the last hour, weather, etc... There's no way I'm getting near that level, ever. No interest in being that connected to news.
I keep up with NFL news very well, but I know basically nothing about any college football players. Doesn't matter. I still believe I have a big advantage in CFB DFS. I simply use Devin Knotts's projections with the interactive value charts and seem to create a bunch of very strong lineups with every little effort -- because Devin keeps up with all the news. ("Seem to" because this is only my second week of CFB DFS ever. My results so far have been great but completely meaningless over such a small sample. Time will tell if I'll have good results over the long run. But I believe I will because the projections and tools that I have access to should give me a huge edge over the average player.)

Anyone who knows nothing about NFL players can do the same thing by using projections by Dodds, Bloom, and me. In three minutes, I could probably teach my mom how to create NFL cash-game lineups using the interactive value charts that are exactly strong as my own cash-game lineups. (There's more of an art to creating tournament lineups, so it would take a while to teach her to do that using the interactive value charts -- but she could instantly do it using the Daily Crusher App instead.)

That's one of the huge differences between DFS and poker. It takes a lot of time and effort to become a winning poker player -- you can't simply pay $32/year to have a winning player make all of your decisions for you. In DFS, you can.

I don't mean this to sound like a Footballguys advertisement. But I do seriously expect to have a higher ROI in CFB than in NFL this year even though I know absolutely nothing about any college players and don't intend to. You don't really have to keep up on the news, weather, etc. if you use somebody else's projections that have all of that stuff built into them. (Good projections are much harder to come by for college players than for NFL players, so I think Devin's projections give me a bigger edge in CFB than my own do in NFL.)
MT is on to something here. I 5x'd yesterday in college football. I had never heard of any player in my lineup. Used MT's tool to construct three lineups in about 15 minutes. One 50/50 hit despite taking three 0's and cleared the cut quite easily. Also hit in a tourney for a small payout and a triple up in another league.

Playing real small in NFL on the late slates mostly for fun. The margin for error is so thin in the NFL that any injuries almost doom you.

I don't really have much experience with pro gamblers, so I can't offer any insight.

Starting to wonder if all that Onslaught stuff actually meant something to him

FYI, in the DC area on The Fan, the afternoon guy, Chad Dukes, keeps dropping his ALF impression in the middle of his Draft Kings live reads.

I find that amusing.
Big O and Dukes were on in Phoenix about 10 years ago, they were funny as #### back then.
Yes. They came here and the station changed formats, Dukes stayed and got a show with Lavar Arrington, Oscar went into pod casting I think. I actually went to high school with Oscar.

There is a process that winning players use on a consistent basis.

-They look at workload, defensive matchups, vegas spreads, game totals and more.

-Generally RBs on favorite teams with high scoring total tend to do better

-WRs in underdogs with high scoring totals tend to do better

-You are looking for high targets, high carries, GL backs, wideouts that make up a high percentage of their team's redzone work, quarterbacks expected to be in a shootout, etc.

Basically you have to filter out a short list of cash plays at each position, top plays, must plays like Antonio Brown, top values that project to have a high floor. This was a tough week, a lot of RBs did poorly, defenses did poorly and Bradford was bad. Bradford was considered a good cash play but in order to be able to win at this over time you have to keep going to the metrics and arriving with strong cash plays.

From today's MMQB by Peter King:

During the Thursday Night game, there were 18 DFS commercials. 11 by Fanduel and 7 by DraftKings. 18 over the course of 1 game.

I'm not sure, but he does spend a good deal of time talking with enthusiasm about all the free booze, food, and other perks the high rollers get. Was really excited about some big ring that was passed around too. Seems like a well grounded, salt of the earth kind of guy.

Congress Is Going to Examine Fantasy Sports & Gambling

Anyone who watched a game this weekend was inundated by commercials for fantasy sports websites, and its only the first week of the NFL season, said Ranking Member Pallone. These sites are enormously popular, arguably central to the fans experience, and professional leagues are seeing the enormous profits as a result. Despite how mainstream these sites have become, though, the legal landscape governing these activities remains murky and should be reviewed.
I just wish they would extend this to everyone else. How many times have you been watching a sporting event and seen insurance commercials over the course of your lifetime? There are a bunch of actuaries locked in a closet somewhere to make sure you(or most people) never come out ahead buying insurance as well. Guess I have missed the outrage toward those folks.
that's not what actuaries do moron
Ah, you may be right and I may be wrong. I am not an actuary. What do actuaries do?
if an insurance company is always in the red they wouldn't exist so who would pay the benefit? There are tons of regulations and state filings. Our goal is to benefit the policyholders all while maintaining the company sets aside the right reserves and remain profitable.
Thanks for clearing that up, now I know why I am a "moron" for not being able to distinguish that obvious difference.

Look, you can pretend the insurance company is paying you to be a patient advocate, or fight super-villains, or slay dragons for all I care. Wear a cape and carry a plastic sword if it makes you feel better, it's all fine by me! To the rest of us it appears as though the casino insurance company is paying you to tell them exactly how high the vig premiums have to be so that they make as big a profit as possible after the relatively small number of payouts.

BTW these poor insurance companies seem to be crumbling under the strain of regulation, Regulation, did I mention REGULATION!....

http://www.investopedia.com/articles/active-trading/111314/top-10-insurance-companies-metrics.asp

... barely staggering along do to the poor economy I suppose. It's a wonder these folks can scrimp and save enough money to advertise at all.

It was the overall humbleness that really drew me in.

My daughter is 10 and has asked me about FanDuel several times and why I don't play. So their advertising certainly seems to be penetrating.

Actually, she seemed semi-interested in the idea of creating a team, so maybe we will have a Homer-Lisa bonding moment at some point in the future.

I let my 10 year old play a $1 game every Sunday on my account. :bag:

Last night, my 7-year-old son asked me to play the card game 'War' with him.

As we flip our first cards, he lets out a battle cry of "Draaaaaaaaaaaffft KINGS!", dropping his card on the word "kings"

He does this again the second hand, and I ask him "why are you yelling 'draft kings' when you flip your card?"

His response, "I have no idea"

Before you know it, he's going to be snorting lines off the breasts of a stripper named Cinnamon.

If anything week 2 was a tough week in general. You could have won the cash games on FD if you had Bradford with Antonio Brown but a lot of RBs did subpar. I even won some of the Bradford lineups with Hyde/Ingram. If you had Palmer you were in great shape.

A lot of people even the sharp players didn't do well. Some weeks are tough where a lot of chalk or top plays don't do well.

I had my best week ever. Stacked Palmer and Fitz and played Decker and Brown at WR. RBs and my defense killed me. Finished 106th out of like 5000 in one GPP and still only won $20 for a $5 buyin.

This should be the millionaire maker commercial. From a guy with holes in his underwear to doing massive quantities of columbian fire off body parts of a stripper.

We're going to Sizzler!!!!!!!!!

Saw a FanDuel ad in a movie theater. Part of the ad said to "join now" and gave a cheat code to increase the deposit.

Do they really want you to make the rest of the audience mad by turning on your smartphone to join and enter all your information in the theater?

Someone might shoot you for that in FL

DraftKings got as I heard recently an extra million users. The cost to acquire new users is not cheap, I heard a benchmark number like 70 dollars per user. It appears to be working and I believe these commercials will start to lessen when the metrics say the number of users or amount being spent drops.

It's really odd hearing everyone from the big networks down to local radio guys pushing this stuff. They're paying everyone to act like it's the greatest thing ever and so easy to get rich. It's just another form of random gambling with a little bit of skill behind it. So strange

Isn't a bit like betting on horse racing? There can be some skill behind it (research on the horses, (knowing how they react to different starting positions, weather, etc.) but in the end randomness comes in to play, considering we're talking about animals and how they run around a track.

Hey guys, just came across this thread today for the first time and see my name is mentioned a bit. Hope all the long-time FBGs are doing well....I don't browse the forums much these days, but I have many fond memories of this place and the people here!

As for the main point of the thread, am I the only one who doesn't care at all about commercials? Like, the very idea of discussing/complaining about them seems so weird to me. I usually change the channel, look at phone/laptop, talk to friends, or just tune out completely whenever a commercial comes on. I have major ADD though....that probably has something to do with it.

I know some of these posts were from more than a month ago, but I wanted to reply to some of them still. I'm grateful for any feedback on my video blog, as its something I was super nervous about doing initially but I've put a lot of work into it and have had some success(its now hosted by RotoGrinders).

god he comes off like a pretentious ****.

.

And what's with the pit sweat? He's in his own pad (I assume).
What specifically did I do or say that made you feel this way? Perhaps I'll tell you how I am trying to come off and you can advise me on how I can better accomplish that...

I've had an up-and-down career as a professional gambler, and my "downs" were my own fault. I've struggled to overcome a lot of cognitive biases and shortcomings in the areas of objectivity. Just as recently as this past February I was in a bit of a "down" phase, as my bankroll had dropped so low that I found myself grinding live $2/5 NLHE(which after 12 years of playing professional felt like watching paint dry). Things really started coming together for me in DFS though- its been the perfect storm of hard work, being surrounded by amazing co-workers, and a game that perfectly suits my skillset becoming a mainstream sensation. I'm very aware that its possible DFS never became popular and I'd still be hating my job of grinding live low stakes poker. I'm appreciate and grateful for the DFS industry and all its brought me. In my video blogs I wanted to echo these sentiments. I also wanted to be as honest as possible about what its like to be a professional gambler- there are some great things about it and some really tough things about it. Obviously having a hugely successful year and going on an all-expenses paid trip to Miami would qualify as one of the great things about it, so I wanted for people to see me having those highs when I had them. Did you think it came across as me bragging too much? Should I have started off the video blog series with an episode about one of my tougher times as a pro gambler, maybe after a big losing day?

Haha, the pit sweat is something I've worked on since that first episode. What can I say, I was nervous!

That was a Vegas condo I shared with my friend/co-worker Aaron Jones and his girlfriend Jenni.

40 FREAKING MINUTES?!?
My first introduction into the world of podcasts/vlogs was Joe Rogan's: http://joerogan.net/podcasts/

His are often as long as 3 hours, but I really fell in love with that long format because it truly gives him and his guests an opportunity to explain their thoughts in-depth with great nuance. I especially loved how open and honest Joe was in his podcasts, and its the main thing I've tried to take from him and apply to my vlog.

My other biggest influence would probably be Luke Thomas who does MMA podcasts. If you're interested in those, I'd highly suggest checking out his latest one about the recent Ronda Rousey loss: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBEhcxDaoYs

I think that I'm similar to Luke Thomas in that I'm very long-winded and expository. My initial foray into the world of podcasting was doing a basketball show for the website PointsPerPossession(no longer up), but I found that my style didn't mesh well when trying to discussing things with other people on a podcast(contrasted to Joe Rogan whose comedic-upbringing makes him great at interacting with others on a podcast). Once I saw Luke Thomas do his podcast, I knew that was the format I should copy in order to maximize my skillset, so I tried to learn from him in this regard.

That was worse than all the Fun Duel commercials combined.

I wish people would give specific feedback if they didn't like it. This just feels like hate intended to make me feel bad....if its not for you then its not for you; I'm not forcing anyone to watch my vlogs.

Assani - I am watching with your video blog and wondering what the intent is - I mean what are we to get from watching this?
My vlog has a few different intentions, but in regards to what I think my viewers can learn about DFS from it...

Most people have incorrect paradigms about what it takes to be successful at DFS or gambling in general. Perhaps due to the movies like Rounders or Two For the Money, people tend to think that its about a natural ability/sense to pick winners. As such, people often look for advice such as "Tell me who you like on DraftKings this coming week." In reality being a successful gambler is about undergoing a strenuous process in which you attempt to understand and eliminate cognitive biases that your individual brain suffers from(we are all different), quantifying your edges precisely, working incredibly hard to increase your edge(example: line shopping in sports betting), and so on and so forth. I think that viewers can learn about the mindset required to do these things from watching my vlog, as well as see firsthand how I attempt to do these things in DFS.

In the past 3 years I've lived in La Paz(Mexico), Toronto, Vegas, and San Diego. Moving often makes it tough to own a lot of possessions such as art work. I'm currently in San Diego and my place came furnished and is very modern and artsy. Its perfect for me because yea....thats obviously not my strongsuit, haha. Prior to living in the condo you saw in that video I did have a ton of Abby Martin psychedelic artwork in my place. It was during my hippie phase where I was more into that sort of thing(i'm still a big hippie at heart though!).

In defense of that place, what you don't see in the video is that the entire adjacent wall is a window/balcony door view of the Vegas strip. Its captures one's attention so much when inside the condo that I think the no artwork/no frills look on the other walls isn't THAT bad.

Also you couldn't be more wrong about the folding card table part- the nicest part of any poker pro's home is going to be his computer setup! I have two 30 inch monitors and a pretty nice desk setup at that condo. I actually do have a nice chair too, but I find myself sitting on the $20 exercise ball much more often because it helps my posture/back pain.

Starting to wonder if all that Onslaught stuff actually meant something to him
Haha, I was a guest on the Thinking Poker podcast and they asked me about the onslaught and boiling oats runner posts I had made on twoplustwo! In the heat of the moment, I didn't think to even mention that it all originated over at FBGs :(

He's apparently one of the best on DraftKings for PGA DFS. Pretty wild.
I assume you're looking at the RG rankings. Their system definitely isn't perfect(even worse now than when you made this post, but its not their fault...the sites stopped allowing them access to all the data). I would not consider myself a top PGA DFS player despite my ranking there, but I would consider myself a top NBA DFS player despite being un-ranked in NBA on the RG rankings.

Icy pots, bishes.

Not sure how you got that at all....

Though as someone who's actually hung with Assani in vegas, he's a super laid back/nice guy.
Much
