Bump for the incredibly entertaining ending to the FIDE candidates tournament. Heartbreak for Caruana as he, as much as one can in chess, blows the tournament. The young 17 year old phenom (who I only just learned about because of the tournament) wins it. Hikaru put up a heck of a fight while still providing content on his Youtube channel.
Some questions going through my mind:
1. Is Fabi now the chess equivalent of Jean Van De Velde?
2. Is Gukesh the next Magnus? And, will this get Magnus interested in playing FIDE again?
3. Will there ever be a more thrilling final round?
4. Will the US ever care about chess again?
That's consecutive Candidates tournaments where a US player had ample opportunities to advance to the WCC. Hikaru blew it the last time vs Nepo, IMO. :(
I'd like to see stats to back this up, but I thought chess had exploded in popularity lately. But, lets face it, it's an esoteric hobby - just can't compete with popping a Schlitz and watching Nascar.
