Perhaps they want to be off Spotify but their label and/or management has the final say and they want them to remain?
Failure -- a band I have touted in previous music threads -- got angry at Spotify at the same time Neil Young did and said they were pulling their songs from it. In the end they were able to pull their self-released post-reunion albums from Spotify, but not their '90s albums that were on a label.

Yes. I assume the band may have some control over their artist’s page, but bands very seldom control the copyright to the audio recordings of their songs, even if they control the composition copyright. So the artist can’t really keep the recordings off a streaming service.

- There's a lot more bands that I do not know this time around - some of which I can already tell that I'm going to love
- On the flip side, with all due respect to the Thumper Rule, there was a handful of bands/artists that I already knew or strongly assumed that I did not like during the reveal process. In the spirit of this exercise, I am giving all a clean slate and will listen to each song. However this time around, my expectations were on point and I even skipped through a few songs (Played all at least halfway through). Perhaps a few will make my Top 5 "New To Me" lists at some point, but I do think there's some that just aren't going to be my thing.
- The Tchaikovsky piece is a great ending to the list - I'll never be a real classical guy but I always like what I hear and do throw it on once in a while - this will be a good final playlist to add to for when I do feel in the mood.
- Other new to me songs that just missed Top 5: Good Year - The Refreshments; Heads Roll Off - Frightened Rabbit
- I never heard the Wilbury's cover of Runaway. I imagine it's for the Tom Petty slot, but who is handling the vocals, Jeff Lynne? or perhaps it's Del Shannon as he was making appearances on Petty albums during that time?
- I'm really pumped this started up again, but sad that I'm already through the first playlist - maybe I'll give it a second run through on my after dinner boardwalk stroll.

I've said it before, but if my artist is one of these for people I would honestly rather know. I don't pick my artists just on what people might like, but it does help narrow down other possibilities in metal and/or Mastodon are skips for the majority of participants, or people aren't at least getting a song or two of enjoyment.

I didn’t skip the Mastadon song. I actually liked the jam but was not a big fan of the vocals or metal, generally, now that I’m over 50.
I would say they’re a band I likely won’t really get into after this is done, but wouldn’t be surprised to see them get some Top 5 “New To Me” songs selected.
They were proggy enough that the heaviness worked better for me but just not something I put on myself anymore.

I agree. I’d kind of like to know too. With Sigur Ros, they’re a bit of an acquired taste so I knew there would be strong dislikes and skips from a lot of people. But I also felt so strongly about them that I hoped I could win over a few people. Mastodon must probably feel the same way.
With Sia, I think her music is much more accessible, and I picked her mostly because I don’t think a lot of people know her work other than the recent pop hits she’s had. But I also know that pop music isn’t everyone’s cup of tea either.
But this wouldn’t be nearly as fun if everyone was just picking safe artists.

Even though Sigar Ros wasn't really my thing I still listened to every song but did sometimes skip on a second playlist listen. I did notice that if I was listening at work they were just kinda meh for me. Some was bad but some was okay in small doses but not something I'd seek out. But if I listened at home while stoned I really got into some of it.
So far Sia is a big yes for me!

Very fair pov. I think there is more progginess to come and that might attract a couple people to some songs, but these are about as clean and non-growly as the vocals get for them. There might be a song or two that is just Brann singing, but I can't remember offhand. On Thursday we will get the other end of their vocal spectrum, and the song I am guessing few will enjoy.

I love Sigur Ros, and thought it was a good selection. That said, personally I still listen to them in small doses when I am in the mood - there are a couple of their albums that are in my rotation. Now your playlist will be in my rotation. They are a difficult artist to mix into a playlist with a wide mix of genres though. It's not like we are constructing these playlists for flow and cohesiveness, so that's also to be expected with many of our selections too.

Already mentioned Summer's End as my favorite from this batch. I shared a posthumous Brandi Carlile cover of a Prine song last countdown. This round, I'll share them playing together (along with Sturgill Simpson) on Colbert. You can see how much Brandi adores John while she sings backup for him.

I liked almost all the songs in the round. Favorites were probably the John Prine song and the one by the Drive-By Truckers. Although I know OF the Drive-By Truckers, I'm not sure I've heard any of their songs before. Maybe some in later rounds will sound familiar. However, strangely, they sound a lot like I thought they would!

I picked Talking Heads because I like them. A lot. I hope they aren't loathed but that's life's rich pageant. Not everybody has to like everything, but I hope folks are giving all the artists a fair shake.

The first time I heard this was on a bus on a class field trip to NYC in 9th grade. I was sitting next to this kid Phil who had the tape and he lent me his walkman while he tried to get with Josie the next row over. Around lunch, a bunch of us ditched for a bit and went to Crazy Eddie's (my first time being in NY and other kids said that was the place to go for music) and I bought a copy for myself. Then I went into one of those urban electronics stores to buy some blank maxells so I could dub it for my friends. I asked how much for the 3-pack of 90 min tapes and dude said "kid, if you're gonna bust my balls, you can get the #### outta here."
I think that trip was also the first I ever saw a Jewish person, or at least someone that I recognized as Jewish. But that's a story for another day.

I think they are, but I also think people are pretty clear about types of music they don't click with or just flat out dislike. I think an artist like Talking Heads falls way more into people's traditional wheelhouse than metal or rap, for example. I promise I will give everybody's artists and songs a fair, fully attentive listen. I promise that anybody taking reggae or country has the biggest roadblock to me fully loving them as well.
I guess what I am saying for something like Mastodon and this group my initial impression is that there is MAYBE 10 participants who listen to metal with any frequency. Of them, some might not even like their style. I'd then guess there are 10-15 who click with metal as much as I do reggae, and the rest might like a few songs. I could be wrong on this sentiment, but that's my impression of the group. Long story short, I think artists like Rush or Radiohead will have a core group who don't like them, where Mastodon operates in a whole genre or style that have a bigger core group that doesn't click with it.

I liked Mastodon enough to keep listening. Yeah, I wished they had like a Dio or Bruce Dickenson to wail something rather than the guttural barking thing, but they were satisfyingly heavy. Chalk me up as another who liked the Sia trip-hop thing. Kind of a gave me Fiona Apple vibes.

I Got Loaded - before this song, I could have named you exactly 1 Los Lobos song.
Southern Cross - see above. No little Buffett, but asumed it was stuff I wouldn't dig.
Suffering Jukebox - 0 knowledge of this artist, but was expecting folk.
Dare Me - just know the hits. That be some funky *** bass, mama.
Little Darling - I took exactly 1 song for zamboni to surprise me with a Lizzy song I haven't gotten to yet.

Overall, great start to the list. I didn't skip anything, but y'all are already pushing it with the covers.
My 2 biggest
are:
Black Midi - I was liking it, but I also have the impression that this one could be the Bauhaus of Part 2 in that it also scared me at night.
The Jam - again, I liked it but I also got a whiff of bands that I normally don't click with. You got me with Chicago, so until proven otherwise - in Pip I trust.

Against Me #31 - Reinventing Axl Rose
Album: Against Me! (The Acoustic EP)
Year: 2001
A great example of when Against Me! was a purely acoustic anarcho-punk band. The EP was primarily self-recorded at a studio in Gainesville as a two-piece, with Laura Jane Grace on vocals/guitar and Dustin Fridkin on bass, and pressed through a tiny crustpunk label in suburban Baltimore. The opening lines of Reinventing Axl Rose perfectly describe the band's aspirations:
We want a band that plays loud and hard every night
That doesn't care how many people are counted at the door
That would travel one million miles and ask for nothing more
Than a plate of food and a place to rest
And then a lyric that sounds like it could have come directly from a future Hold Steady song:
And everyone would leave with the memory
That there was no place else in the world
And this was where they always belonged
No doubt their commitment to keeping scene purity was absolutely sincere at the time. For better or worse, it couldn't last.
