We will fire up the thread for 1982.  Look at rule # 8 if you have questions about a release date.  Two movies that were discussed and were ruled to be in 1981 were Porky's and The Road Warrior.

LISTS DUE BY MARCH 18TH.  COUNTDOWN WILL START ON MONDAY THE 19TH.

Here is what we will do.... (again, straight up stolen from NV, but I don't think he will mind).

1.  PM me a list (or you can post here in spoiler tags, but PM is preferred)

2.  You must list a minimum of 10 movies, and a maximum of 20.

3. You have 200 points to distribute to your list.

4.  Maximum points a movie can get is 30.

5.  You can also simply post your top 10-20 movies in order and they will be awarded points in a descending order from 19-1.

6.  We are only doing movies that have a theater release in 1982.

7.  NO PORN! , but other than that, there are no genre restrictions - comedy, horror, documentary, foreign, etc..

8.  We will use Wikipedia and imdb for release dates, and remember, this is first theater release, NOT just U.S. release.

EXAMPLE 1 - Points Assigned:

Titanic - 30
Austin Powers - 30
The Shining - 25
Happy Gilmore - 20
Halloween 2 - 15
Death to Smoochy- 10
Cabin in the Woods - 10

Goodfellas - 10
Godfather - 10

Blue Velvet - 5
King of Kong - 5

I'm taking my time on this one.  In fact re-watched a certain buddy cop movie that I love because I haven't seen it in a while and it holds up.  If Porky's was allowed I may have had 3 with 30 points.  I'll send my list in a couple days.  Is there a due date yet?

this year churned out the likes of Jessica Biel, Natalie Dormer, Kirsten Dunst, Thora Birch, Erika Chrsitensen, Anne Hathaway, Jodie Sweetin, Hayley Atwell, Priyanka Chopra, Alison Brie, Elisha Cuthbert, Kristin Kreuk, Devon Aoki, Cobie Smulders, Sophia Bush, Lizzy Caplan, Elizabeth Moss, Anna Paquin, Abbie Cornish ... may have been a "meh" year for flicks, but that's an award worthy babe roster right there

So let's just get this out of the way because I have a feeling y'all gonna hate me by the time this list goes up.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is not only the clear number 1, but the greatest sci fi movie of all time and all time top 10 in any genre. It's also in my top 3 all time.

:boxing:

I fired this one up a little early because I was getting lists, and I wanted to get the voting up.   I was going to start it up on Monday and give people a week for lists, so I will still keep that timeline.  So how about for this one, list are due by March 17th, and countdown will start on the 18th??

Like you, there are a handful that I want to catch up with.  I watched 2 '82 movies last night, and plan for 1-2 tonight.

48hrs better make the final countdown.

Tell me a bedtime story.

I've never seen Sophia's Choice so I'm going to watch that tonight. (it's on Amazon Prime if anyone else wants to cry).  I know the gist of the movie and maybe that's why I've avoided it all these years.  Have to be in the right frame of mind for a movie like that.  Also in the process of "acquiring" :gang2:   :ninja:   The King of Comedy, because I haven't seen that in forever and remember loving it.

Mostly true but Star Trek 4 is the best one.

Was reading some trivia while watching it last night and it was supposed to be a Clint Eastwood vehicle in the late 70's (him as the criminal) and then because Richard Pryor proved he could carry a movie it was re-tooled for him.  He couldn't do it at the time it finally got green-lit so the studio's next choice was Gregory Hines.  He couldn't do it so Eddie Murphy's agent who was dating one of the producers suggested him and the rest is history.

The problem I run into with trying to catch up on some of these years is the ones I put off are the heavy dramas and/or the long movies.   Not sure if I am going to be making it through that 5 1/2 hour Sophie's Choice and Gandhi double feature.

:blackdot:

If we go down to 1920s, I might say 1920s and earlier.  (Not worth doing 1910s as a separate decade, but some good stuff in there too.)

Sophie's Choice is a gut punch of a movie, but it is brilliant from start to finish.  It's one of those movies that makes you think for weeks afterwards about what you would do if you were in certain situations.

Interesting.  Pryor probably would have been killer in that role.

Here's my take on Ghandi:

It's a brilliant movie.  It probably deserved more awards than it won.  Everyone who has ever enjoyed cinema should see it and the acting in just about every role is about as top notch as you can possibly get.  Basically, it is everything that good about good drama in Hollywood.

But - small but - it's not really a movie that you would watch multiple times to me.  If that is one of your criteria, and it is one of mine, you are hard pressed to give it a great score here, unless you are just trying to mimic the academy, which I'm not.

Still, the scene where the British troops beat the unarmed protestors and the various political scenes with the Pakistani leadership are about as good as you can make a story come alive on the screen.

The new generation of Star Trek movies are waaaaay better, by far. But the original Darth Vader was the best.

:scared:

Depending how the voting goes, we could also just do a pre-40s or pre-50s poll.
That works too.  Another thought is splitting the 1960s.  I'm not sure about others, but it may be my favorite movie decade.   I don't think coming up with 10-20 in both the front and back half of the decade should be an issue for most.

The only good Star Trek is the new movies. All of the old ones are the suck

The scene that ends Ghandi’s hunger strike, where he tells the guy to adopt a muslim orphan.  i have watched Ghandi at least 10 times. It’s all time top 10.

Mostly true but Star Trek 4 is the best one.
4 is very much the quintessential Star Trek story that Gene Roddenbury envisioned when he created the series.  In that, you are right that it is awesome (and if you are being sarcastic, don't care).  The problem with 4 is that as a continuation of 3, it didn't have that moment of greatness.  Khan was great from start to finish, 3 had the theft of the Enterprise and then the Enterprise exploding, which is still one of the most dramatic moments in movie history for me.  I felt like a character I had followed my whole life and who had become a part of my life in the way that movie and TV characters can, died in front of me.  Way too much emotion for a plastic model being blowed up by a firecracker set to music.  But it still is a moment I will never forget in my movie watching history.  4 didn't have that moment, and tried for too much comedy.

Still, it was better than 1 or 5.  The only correct ranking for Star Trek movies from the original cast 6 released are II, VI, III, IV, I, V.

I watched some seriously weird #### from 82 last night. One with some dude killing people with a duck voice that one will probably make the list it did have me laughing a lot

   What the hell movie was that?  Also, was it the duck voice that killed them or did he use a duck voice while killing them?

New York Ripper.  Meh.
an under appreciated schlock gem ...

Not for the squeamish!

18 September 2004 | by ******** – See all my reviews

While this movie contains plenty of graphic violence beyond most horror movies, I cannot deny a certain brilliance in Fulci's direction. Sure there were plot holes, the dubbing was bad, the duck sounded ridiculous, those were part of the reasons I enjoyed it, simply because a logical movie doesn't play with my mind like this one did. Fulci deals with a lot of psychological issues and the areas of the unknown. There is enough unsaid that keeps you guessing until the very end (some which never gets said, but we won't go there). In my opinion, this movie had a faster pace and more solid plot than most of Fulci's more popular efforts. It was simple: someone who talks like a duck is killing beautiful women in New York. I did find it scary. Sometimes I'm intrigued how they think up some of the things they did in this movie. Maybe it should be called "The Amsterdam Ripper" because of the extreme sex, violence, and drug atmosphere. But on the Anchor Bay DVD uncut release, the cinematography was amazing. I do love that this is an Italian movie filmed in New York, another totally illogical thing to do in my mind, yet on some level, it works for the sheer creativity and guts to do something new. No Academy Awards, but they sure don't make movies like this anymore! I'll give it 3 quacks out of 5.

Well for me, I literally live in the city where they keep the nuclear wessels.  So you can see why I feel it’s the best one.

Also a punk rocker flipping off Spock.

I can only promise a year by year list through the 50s.  Will try my best to go earlier but can't say for sure.

I will take my time before submitting the 1982 list.  Was waiting for this thread to appear before even thinking deeply about it.

It might not have been clear - we are not doing year by year any earlier than the 70s.  For anything before that we will probably be doing the whole decade (and maybe tweaking the total points/#of movies somehow).   I just added that question on there to gauge overall interest in those decades.

Here is my list folks.

Blade Runner - 30

The Thing - 30

Fast Times At Ridgemont High - 25

Rocky III - 15

Star Trek II The Wrath Of Khan - 15

The Beastmaster - 15

48 HRS - 10

E.T. - 10

Tootsie - 10

Conan The Barbarian - 5

Creepshow - 5

An Officer And A Gentleman - 5

First Blood - 5

The Last American Virgin - 5

Poltergeist - 5

Halloween III - 5

The Dark Crystal - 2

They Call Me Bruce - 1

The Beast Within - 1

Yeah I can promise to participate in full decades or partial decades of any era.

They are showing "The Dark Crystal" in my local AMC theater right now.  I had never seen it so after seeing a movie I just walked in to see it.  Stayed about 10 minutes.  Weird.

Deliciously weird. A cult classic it surely is.

Thanks for extending the deadline. I plan on somehow finding the time to watch at least The Verdict, The Border, and Shoot The Moon before then. I doubt I'll pull it off but I'll try to work in Gandhi, Sophie's Choice and Diner if I can.

I think year by year pre-70s would prove tough for a lot of posters given the average age around here but I think grouping by years of 5 might get everyone. At least through the 50s?

The 40s are my favorite decade so I am hoping we find a way to do it in so capacity.
