A collection of mostly useless but sometimes interesting things I've come across. There are bugs with opening a lot of spoiler boxes at once. Easiest to avoid if you close each box again once you read the answer. If that doesn't work, just reload the thread and they should work again.

d) Holding breath underwater.  24 minutes, 3 seconds. In addition to training, there are a number of techniques needed to go such an incredible length of time, such as breathing pure oxygen before attempting the event to flush carbon dioxide from the body in advance, as building carbon dioxide turning the blood acidic is the problem when holding your breath. Also mastering a technique of closing off the airways then pushing cheek-fulls of air into the lungs to overload them can add 3 liters of extra air.


2) This tree looks like it is studded with spikes, and spreads its seeds by explosively launching them at speeds up to 160mph, and landing as far as 330 feet away.



3) According to a professor at Notre Dame, in a two player game of Monopoly what is the smallest number of rolls of the dice possible before the game could be lost?

Player 1 must pick up money from a Community Chest card, and then on his second turn buy Park Place and Boardwalk, pass Go for more money and then put houses on them. Player 2 on his second turn then gets an advance to Boardwalk card and goes bankrupt due to the houses.

Barbie. That is the Barbie doll's full name.

All have been named Time's Person of the Year

KFC. There are more KFC outlets in China than there are in the United States


7) As of 2013 there were about 35.16 million people living in Canada. Canada has 3.855 million square miles of land, or a little more than 70 acres per person. About how many land owners are there in Canada?

Only 1. Queen Elizabeth owns all land in Canada. Since Canada uses primarily English-derived common law, the holders of the land actually have land tenure (permission to hold land from the Crown) rather than absolute ownership.

As cities that Congress has met in, they are the list of cities that can be said to have once served as the US capital. Washington D.C. has been the capital since 1800.


9) What are you measuring if you use a pluviometer?

Precipitation. It's a rain gauge.


10)  In many liquor stores, you can buy pear brandy, with a real pear inside the bottle. The pear is whole and ripe, and the bottle is genuine; it hasn't been cut in any way. How did the pear get inside the bottle?

It grew inside the bottle. The bottles are placed over pear buds when they are small, and are wired in place on the tree. The bottle is left in place for the entire growing season. When the pears are ripe, they are snipped off at the stems.

Still laughing at #3 Monopoly game. It reminds me of the time someone one at Clue before I even got in a room! Rolled 1, then 2 (they made their first guess), rolled 2, they used the secret passage and guessed correctly and won. Doh!
