Josh Huff (Eagles WR) (1 Viewer)

Not much talk about this guy despite having been drafted in the 3rd round by his college coach (Chip Kelly).

He had a 102 yard TD return last night so I figured it was time he had his own thread.

Huff is very similar to Maclin - an inch shorter but 8 lbs. heavier with the same speed (mid 4.4's).

Dynasty this is a great value. He's going to be the workhorse while Matthews is the stud in 2 to 3 years.

If the Eagles don't re-sign Maclin then I see him as a great replacement.

I haven't seen him go higher than #35 in rookie drafts and think that is a steal with his potential role in the Eagles' offense.

(RotoWire)Huff (shoulder) may be able to play in Week 1 against the Jaguars, lehighvalleylive.com reports.

Analysis: A previous report indicated that Huff, who suffered an AC joint sprain during the preseason, could be sidelined for multiple weeks. If healthy, he could open the years as the Eagles' No. 4 wide receiver, with the top three spots going to Jeremy Maclin, Riley Cooper and fellow rookie Jordan Matthews.

Philadelphia Eagles 2014 Rookie Grades: Jordan Matthews saving grace

Excerpt:

Round 3: WR Josh Huff

One of Chip’s former Oregon guys, Josh Huff looked like a potentially decent No. 3 or 4 wide receiver in the future based on his college tape, and he did show some promise as a rookie. Huff could have a shot to usurp Riley Cooper as the starting outside receiver in two-wide sets, but he’ll still have his work cut out for him after posting an even lower catch rate with less yards per target than Cooper last season.

Even though it all came in the smallest of sample sizes, Huff caught just eight of his 18 targets for 98 yards, averaging just 5.4 yards per target. That said, he did have his desired impact as a run blocker in the Eagles offense, which will be critical in his competition with Cooper this offseason. Huff also showed off special teams ability, so his returns and blocking can make up for any deficiencies in the passing game if he doesn’t make a significant impact as a pass-catcher in 2014.

I think Huff should do a credible job for the Eagles going forward, but he showed last season that he was one of the most raw receivers in the rookie class and was likely over-drafted. Huff needs to become more consistent and cut out the myriad of negative plays that undermine the explosive ones he makes. He deserved to have just 18 targets last season after doing very little with those opportunities, but it’s fair to say that Huff has promise going forward. But if he’s the team’s No. 3 receiver over Cooper, then hopefully that’s not because Cooper sucked that badly in August.

Rookie Grade: D+

Rotoworld:

Beat writer Jimmy Kempski has heard the Eagles believe Josh Huff has more upside than Jordan Matthews.

As rookies in 2013, Matthews impressed with 67-872-8 while Huff made a handful of bone-headed rookie mistakes on the way to a meager 8-98-0. However, Huff is Chip Kelly's pet project from Oregon and has a bit more versatility than Matthews, who currently profiles as only a slot receiver. With Jeremy Maclin leaving a wideout depth chart that lost DeSean Jackson just 12 months earlier, Huff will at least have an opportunity to make a leap on the outside. Ineffective Riley Cooper's snaps must be reduced.

Josh Huff - WR - Eagles

Eagles second-year WR Josh Huff has been working on his release off the line and footwork this offseason.

Huff has been working with his cousin, Rischad Whitfield, nicknamed "The Footwork King" thanks to his work with Le'Veon Bell, Antonio Brown, and others. Huff (5'11/206) was easy to jam at the line as a rookie on his way to an unimpressive 8-98-0 receiving line that included four drops. He has potential to develop into a No. 2 receiver, but the Eagles still need help outside.

Philly Mag's Sheil Kapadia believes Josh Huff is a "lead candidate" to make a second-year leap.
The opportunity is certainly there for Huff as he'll only be competing with brutally ineffective Riley Cooper and a likely draft pick for snaps on the outside. The question is if Huff can capitalize on his big chance. He showed some big-time juice on a 44-yard catch against the Cowboys in Week 14 and took a kickoff 107 yards to the house, but also made a series of boneheaded rookie mistakes. Working in his favor is the Oregon product's status as one of Chip Kelly's "guys," something that seems to be carrying more and more weight these days.

There's no way in hell that Huff has a higher floor or ceiling than Matthews. Just watch both play and compare their performances in both college and the NFL.

Rotoworld:

Eagles WR Josh Huff is expected to open training camp as the team's No. 1 kickoff returner.

Huff was floated as a breakout candidate at wide receiver before the draft, but the chances of that happening all but evaporated when the Eagles selected Nelson Agholor 20th overall. As a rookie, Huff averaged a robust 29.6 yards on 14 kick returns, including a 107-yard touchdown in Week 12 against the Titans.

wonder how much he will be in the hunt for targets? seems like Chip could have a share the wealth type of system here where everyone knows their role similar to Patriots run game

NJ.com believes Eagles second-year WR Josh Huff will be used "way more than people expect."

Beat writer Eliot Shorr-Parks goes as far as to say he thinks Huff will have a better season than first-round rookie Nelson Agholor. It's a bit of a #hottaek, but it's certainly possible Huff takes a step forward as an NFL sophomore. As one of Chip Kelly's "guys," he should steal outside reps from Riley Cooper and will be a factor in the return game. It'll be worth keeping an eye on Huff's progress during training camp.

Rotoworld accusing beat writers for having a hottaek's in their blurbs now?

No Hypocrisy there.

Rotoworld:

NJ.com says Josh Huff was "very impressive" through OTAs and minicamp.

This is the most positive take we've heard on Huff's offseason, as some Eagles beat writers were disappointed in his performance. In the end, Huff will have to step up with the pads on in August if he is going to beat out blocker Riley Cooper for the No. 3 wideout job behind Jordan Matthews and Nelson Agholor. In a worst-case scenario, Huff will end up as a sub-package receiver and return specialist.

Rotoworld:

The Philadelphia Inquirer's Jeff McLane reports second-year WR Josh Huff "looks significantly better" than he did at this time last year.

With the Eagles making first-round rookie Nelson Agholor work mostly with the twos and earn his reps with the ones, Huff and Riley Cooper have been gobbling up first-team reps behind Jordan Matthews. Huff "dusted" a defensive back on a seam route out of the slot Thursday and has shown good chemistry with Sam Bradford. Ideally, the Eagles' three-wide set would consist of Matthews, Agholor and Huff, with Cooper taking on a bit role as the No. 4 receiver.

No talk about this guy even though he broke thru this past week with Agholor ailing. With Agholor already declared out against the week 6 game vs the Giants, is Huff a sneaky start this week?

Yes. Giants have a decent run defense (12th according to FO's DVOA).

I added Huff in dynasty, since it looks like Agholor is in the middle of a redshirt year.

Hoping that Huff's output is commensurate with his confidence.

Better add than Austin or Cooper? Need backup plan for OBJ.
If you have to choose an Eagle WR other than Matthews, Huff has the most upside. Cooper or Ausin only have value if they throw deep and actually catch it.

Yeah, saw this comig.  He had hollow point bullets among all the other tansgressions.  I wouldn't be surprised if he never plays another down.  It's going to take a ton of work for him to make it back.

Listening to WIP this week, this seems to be a lot of people's biggest issue.

Marijuana - No problem.

Speeding - No problem.

DUI - No problem

Unregistered (in NJ) handgun - No problem.

Hollow Points - OH NOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you explain why you highlight that transgression? I'm guessing it comes from the non- (or anti-) gun crowd. HPs are pretty par for the course for any defensive handgun purposes. Hollow points are NOT armor-piercing, if that is the misconception.

They are all bad, except the weed.  Although, from what I just read, the hollow points shouldnt be a huge deal if he spends for a good lawyer.  NJ has strict laws against them, but there are exceptions.  Perception-wise, it doesn't look good, and more importantly, Huff isn't that good.  After thinking about it more, I think he'll get another shot, but the fact that the team moved so quicklt to releasd him is never a good sign.
