I’ve said it before in the other thread and I’ll say it again here: I’ve only watched this movie once and I’ll never watch it again. It’s good, but very disturbing.

Also, the American remake is pure garbage. I fast-forwarded through at least half of it. Swill.
I'll might watch it again someday but it is definitely a tough watch. And agreed on the American remake. Horrible.

This is one of those movies that I was almost afraid to watch. As Scoresman said, you can't help but feel the utter horror of what's happening and just want it to end. Too often, I analyze movies with a full awareness that they are actors. Like when a dog dies in a movie, my wife gets really affected by it but I know a dog didn't actually die. It doesn't bother me. I will listen for the sound effects, pay attention to the lighting, judge how well the actors are doing. It's actually a flaw in me since it prevents me from enjoying movies as deeply as other people can. That's why a movie has never made me cry. But it's a rare movie that gets me so absorbed in what's happening that I can forget all that and just experience it. This is one of those movies. I'm not sure if a rewatch will do the same for me though. I don't think the experience will be the same.

Just looking at the youtube comments and this one states what I was saying;
Ive seen this movie about 7 8 times... I miss when I watched It for the first time!!! The BEST HORROR MOVIE OF ALL TIME...
I wouldn't go that far though as being the best.

I love Robert Eggers' movies. Few directors can create atmosphere like he can. Might not fit in with some peoples definition of horror and I wouldn't argue but it did for me. I always recommend this movie for people trying out a home theater sound system. That horn!
Just a unique movie and daring roles by both actors. Willem Dafoe is always great and I came away really impressed with Robert Pattinson.

He's made three I really enjoy, one still to be listed and The Northman. Big fan.

As for The Lighthouse, i love the way it was filmed. Creepy shadows with long takes were great. I could also understand someone not thinking it as horror.

I was hoping this would end up higher. To me, this is the pinnacle of extreme/torture horror.

It's a completely different watch from things like Hostel. The extreme isn't just there to shock for shock's sake, there is a bigger plot purpose behind it all.

But the biggest thing that sets this movie apart, IMO, is that unlike movies like Hostel where most of the main cast are douchebags, Martyrs humanizes people. You want their suffering to be over. That makes it so much more effective to me. It also makes the movie a very difficult watch. Yes, there is gore, but there's non-gory violence that is even more effective. You will wonder why this is all happening up until the movie's ending, at which point you will leave traumatized, but maybe a little hopeful or depressed depending on how you interpret it all.

Yea, rethinking my ranking..I’d probably put it at least in my top 30.

Susan Sarandon’s ex-husband plays a really good vampire in this one. Charismatic and charming, then turns evil and scary on a dime. The remake is an interesting take and I do like it, but it is no where near the same experience.

Fun vamper here. All at once it's pure 1980s and a call back to the Hammer era thanks to the involvement of one Peter Vincent.

And don't forget about Evil Ed!

This is one of the few remaining "80s" horror movies that I actually still gravitate to and enjoy watching. There is another goofy vampire flick from the time that is also still fun as hell as well. I guess saying the 80s isn't correct. When I look at the decades, the movies, and my list I'd more accurately say there is about a decade long black hole for horror movies, but it's from '85 - '95. That is roughly from Nightmare 1 to Scream. There are exceptions of course, but I'm comparing that to the decade before it where I have trouble just narrowing down a top 10 for a year sometimes. Or the decade after scream with found footage and Asian horror movies becoming a staple, to even the last decade which just might be my favorite since the 70s/early 80s.

With just him and Aster movies are in very good hands going forward. Eggers has Nosferatu coming out at the end of the year. I'm not sure how I feel about that, but I also love his movies and dedication to research and set design. He might hover in the horror realm more, but Aster seems to want to dabble more. I've listened to a couple interviews where it's just those two talking, and it's a great listen.

Anyone watching the series From? I think it’s only on MGM+ which I had to subscribe to. Season 1 came out on some platform a few years ago and then went pay or something so we didn’t finish it. S2 came out recently so we decided to pay and pick it back up. Only a few episodes into S2 but it’s got a good balance of horror and mystery

You have this listed as 2011 but the trailer is for the 1985 version. I ranked the 1985 version but am not listed here.
I also ranked the 1985 version, not 2011. Didnt know there was one tbh.
You're excused. Like most things Colin Farrell it's unmemorable.

Perfect example of how a psychological drama can also be horror. Great use of imagery and score to help emphasize this. Also naked Donald Sutherland is horrific.

This is my favorite of the Jordan Peele movies. Yeah, it's a bit over the top, plot-wise, but Iit was a very entertaining watch. What stands out to me is the use of "I Got 5 On It" and how they turned it into a creepy theme throughout the movie.

Fun and funny movie. "Why'd they jump into the wood chipper??"
Tucker: All right... I know what this is.

Dale: What?

Tucker: This is a suicide pact.

Dale: It's a what?

Tucker: These kids are coming out here, and killing themselves all over the woods.

Dale: My God, that makes so much sense.

:ROFLMAO:

Anyone watching the series From? I think it’s only on MGM+ which I had to subscribe to. Season 1 came out on some platform a few years ago and then went pay or something so we didn’t finish it. S2 came out recently so we decided to pay and pick it back up. Only a few episodes into S2 but it’s got a good balance of horror and mystery
I thought that it was an entertaining show. I got a free week of MGM+ specifically to watch season 2.

"Oh hidy-ho officer, we've had a doozy of a day. There we were minding our own business, just doing chores around the house, when kids started killing themselves all over my property."
