FFA Top 200 Horror Movies of All Time: #77 - Fright Night (21 Viewers)

Dan Lambskins horror list would only be 20 movies long because nothing else is horror.
I know im being overly critical but im generally looking for some sort of supernatural element (zombies, ghosts, demons, werewolves, etc) to classify it as horror
Absent that it’s more the overall tone of the movie and that’s more of a “I know it when I see it” situation.
I am with you for the most part, but we seem to disagree now on Lambs. For me sci fi, action, and comedy movies have a higher bar to clear - just having a gory scene or something stalking people doesn't make it horror. Yes, Predator has skinned people and a stalking alien. It also has a ton of huge guns, mid air arm wrestling, shootouts, etc.. That is the reason I'd guess (hope) we see one movie from another extraterrestrial series but not it's sequel. Like I said, I keep going back to the video store days - 0% chance I would have had Predator, YF, or Terminator in the horror section. Thriller/suspense movies blur more because at their core they are already about building up the tension as well.

Very tough watch. Not sure I enjoyed the experience but I for sure will not forget some of the scenes.

I agree - it's all that and more. In my old age I've lost a bit of my tolerance for gore, especially if I feel it's just for gore's sake and being extreme. Some of the French extremity stuff I have more tolerance for because I think there is more "there" there, if that makes sense. I thought I had seen it all, but I had to take a couple breaks during The Sadness.

I think the trailer is a decent glipse of what you will encounter. There is not much down time at the start, and it doesn't let up much when it gets going. It's something else.

Seems like the major factor here is pacing. Horror needs time to breathe to allow the sense of fear and dread to build. That doesn't happen if there's too much action.

There's a movie I voted for that I expect to see on this list later. When it comes up, I'll pontificate on why it is horror, but almost wasn't

Right there also. Never heard of it but I’ve got it rented on prime now.

I'm flabbergasted at why Young Frankenstein is not considered horror. I mean does the original Frankenstein actually scare you? Really? YF is basically the same movie with comedy added in. If you disqualify it, you have to disqualify every horror comedy for being more funny than scary.
IMO it's intent and if it's always for laughs. If a movie scares me or not rarely comes into play because most don't scare me in the first place. I think Young Frank is clearly in the spoof category - it's a better version of Scary Movie. To me that is a huge difference from other big name ones that I am sure will be coming up on the countdown.
Ooops, I forgot to rank Scary Movie on my list too! YF is a classic and hey, Frankenstein can scare kids!

Even though you may not think a certain movie mentioned here is horror, you have to admit there is a certain amount and ambiguity with these and that it’s really subjective at the end of the day. I feel like this countdown is way more fun with that ambiguity for the diversity of the movies we’ve seen so far.
If there wasn't any controversy, this wouldn't be any fun. It's less controversial than Tim's classic rock list.

Just missed my list. Completely bonkers movie. We're all just pressurized water balloons full of blood waiting to explode, apparently. You know the Rage virus? This movie has the Rape virus - pretty horrifying stuff going on here when a zombie catches someone.

I will discuss Rob Zombies Halloween tomorrow!!!

#162 - Halloween (2007)

I'm a huge fan of the original first movies, but honestly have lost track of how many sequels and reboots there have been. Not much of it looks that interesting to me.
I gave up on this franchise several installments ago. The Rob Zombie version had its moments and it was certainly a take on the source material, but I didn't care for it. Some villains just don't need to have their backstory "explained," and Michael Myers is one of them. For example, I never liked the plot point about Laurie being his sister, and all the celtic stuff was kind of silly IMO. My recollection of Zombie's film was that it was mostly backstory, so obviously it didn't click with me. I appreciated the edginess though.

I am not a fan of Rob Zombie. I will stop short of saying he is a hack, but I don’t think that he is far off. I think that he is a slicker Uwe Boll.

There's more to Zombie's version than that but Myers is scarier when his origin is a suburban kid with no explanation for his evil mind and initial kill

So for this version of Halloween what I liked most was the guy playing Michael Myers, he creeped me the eff out! I get the idea that we don't need so much backstory and such but if I met this Myers the Sociopath in a dark parking lot like that one dude, I would mess myself on the spot.

This is a Spanish movie set in the 1800s about a village blacksmith who makes a deal with a devil. This came damn close to my top 10 as I just love everything about this one. It's rooted in Basque folklore and is part horror, fantasy, and comedy. The trailer does a good job of not giving a lot away, but the makeup and effects are some of the best I've seen in portraying demons and hell. There is no other movie quite like this one.

Please dont watch with English dubs. The actor who plays the main devil is amazing and I can only imagine how an English VA would butcher it.

I'll be the first to admit I never "got" Donnie Darko. I remember in college all the other CS nerds in my classes thought it was the second coming of Citizen Kane and they were very obnoxious about it, which soured it for me before I even saw it.
