FFA Top 200 Horror Movies of All Time: #77 - Fright Night (23 Viewers)

I'm thinking of the one I saw on Max.

(which might include both of them lol I don't know the other one)
Pretty sure we are thinking of the same one. It was in my (unsubmitted) top 10. There is another one that was shot in Detroit, but can't remember if it was set there in the movie.

I'm flabbergasted at why Young Frankenstein is not considered horror. I mean does the original Frankenstein actually scare you? Really? YF is basically the same movie with comedy added in. If you disqualify it, you have to disqualify every horror comedy for being more funny than scary.

IMO it's intent and if it's always for laughs. If a movie scares me or not rarely comes into play because most don't scare me in the first place. I think Young Frank is clearly in the spoof category - it's a better version of Scary Movie. To me that is a huge difference from other big name ones that I am sure will be coming up on the countdown.

A whole group of bada**es bested by one ugly muthaf**er. Love this movie and seeing the cloaking effects and then alien in full, yeah I can see this as horror based on current criteria.

I saw this for the first time this winter. Required viewing for the case of completeness of one's vampire catalogue

FWIW, I just verified that I checked with the host beforehand about Young Frankenstein's eligibility and had backups ready for the end of the list had this (and/or others) been deemed inappropriate. So I get the argument

For me, a horror movie should be horror first. YF is a comedy first. I'm not a big fan of horror comedy in general but do have a couple on my list that fall into the category.

If you disqualify it, you have to disqualify every horror comedy for being more funny than scary.
I would say there should be some scary in a horror movie YF has zero scary.
But scary is incredibly subjective. I saw YF at a young age and it was a bit scary.

Bottom line for me is that there are multiple ways to define horror and considering this movie is the story of Frankenstein, one of the original and most beloved horror stories, I think it more than qualifies

 Igor agrees

Wonder how high everyone ranked the LOTR trilogy

What can I say, I guess I have a thing for Arnold and horror bring the guy who also had Terminator on his list... But not LOTR.

Love predator. Not horror

An alien is stalking and killing people one by one. This fits Predator and another very popular movie that no one would argue is horror. So I don't see how Predator isn't horror.
And if the people being stalked and killed were teenagers in an abandoned summer camp no would argue either.
But that also completely changes the tone and style of movie when we move it from the realm of elite force military dudes and action sequences in the jungle to helpless teens at summer camp.

Lord of the rings has giant spiders, demons, ghosts, etc. would you consider it horror?

What about Star Wars? It has aliens. A guy gets his arm chopped off.
The song, Jedi Rocks, makes Return of the Jedi a horror movie for sure. So cringeworthy imo.

Oh I don't know about that, them being elite forces just means that have better fighting skills and weapons but they still meet the same fate as the teenagers and in just as gruesome of ways. Instead of an otherworldly unkillable slasher you have a seemingly invincible head hunter from off planet, both wearing masks.

Predator is an all-time top-tier guy movie. I wouldn't consider it horror personally. Sure, a weaker being is being stalked by a stronger being that intends to kill it, but I don't recall the predator ever being all that scared of Arnold even though he should have been.

Even though you may not think a certain movie mentioned here is horror, you have to admit there is a certain amount and ambiguity with these and that it’s really subjective at the end of the day. I feel like this countdown is way more fun with that ambiguity for the diversity of the movies we’ve seen so far.

It made me think about whether Predator was a horror movie or not. That's not something I ever would have pondered without this draft.

Never heard of this. Sounds like a variation on Dead Calm
I, obviously, really liked it and highly recommend it.
I liked Dead Calm (not on my list, but I considered it), I've never heard of this one before, and it's on Prime. I think I'll try to give this a watch tonight or tomorrow.
If you need more of an endorsement it is 97% fresh on rotten tomatoes.
This is one of those movies that really shows the difference between RT and other review sites (and highlights why RT is flawed).
I watched Terminator today. For the first time. Yes, that is correct.

Incredibly I have never seen Dead Alive.

On my list now.
Also sometimes gets called Braindead.

#165 - Young Frankenstein

An American grandson of the infamous scientist, struggling to prove that his grandfather was not as insane as people believe, is invited to Transylvania, where he discovers the process that reanimates a dead body.

I regret leaving this off because I think this should be higher. Went back and forth so many times.
I left it off because it is one of the best comedies of all time.

Happy to have brought so much controversy to this great thread! And despite my opinion on what is considered horror, I never considered Young Frankenstein for my list. It really is interesting hearing the different viewpoints and reasonings. The thinker in me starts to wonder how those opinions came to be and what formed them. For me, it was the types of movies my friends and I gravitated to when we binged horror movies in high school. Sure we appreciated the classics, but had such a blast with the fun, gory, ridiculous ones while sneaking booze from the old man's stash. While I now appreciate so many more genres of horror, I guess that nostalgia still carries over a bit to this day.

If it features a flash-back sequence to the Reagan years, it is in my top 15 and is one of the movies that I have very strong opinions about.

Dan Lambskins horror list would only be 20 movies long because nothing else is horror.
I know im being overly critical but im generally looking for some sort of supernatural element (zombies, ghosts, demons, werewolves, etc) to classify it as horror
Absent that it’s more the overall tone of the movie and that’s more of a “I know it when I see it” situation.
