Ohhh this one is good. How'd I miss this.

Glad we are doing another "catch all" round because this will be on my list.

Rear Window would make it into my horror section long before They Live, T2, Predator, or Young Frankenstein would.

This is nuts to me. The only one I really get is T2.
Like I said, I go back to tone, intent, feel of the movie. Just having Aliens and Cyborgs killing things isn't enough. At my store T2 and Predator would be in action, They Live in sci-fi or action, and Young Frankenstein in comedy. To be clear, Rear Window wouldn't be in horror either (Classics or suspsense/thriller), but I think my comment was more about how far from horror I thought the others are vs. Rear Window.

#104 - The Strangers

After returning from a wedding reception, a couple staying in an isolated vacation house receive a knock on the door in the mid-hours of the night. What ensues is a violent invasion by three strangers, their faces hidden behind masks. The couple find themselves in a violent struggle, in which they go beyond what either of them thought capable in order to survive.

I think pretty highly of The Strangers. It takes the time to establish the main characters and unease between them for entirely unrelated reasons, which plays into what happens next and how they react. Once The Strangers appear, it becomes unrelenting in a very unnerving way.

Yeah, I'm with Lambskin on this one, Rear Window is NOT horror.
:lmao: He hasn't even posted about it yet.
He's having a seizure or something as we speak, most likely.

I’m pretty sure it’s all just an elaborate troll job at this point
Scared me as a kid. Also, it is scary how mean he was to Grace Kelly. You treat that woman like the princess that she is, you monster!

Bubblegum line is an all-timer.
Great fight scene.
Decently scary and good special effects for the time.
Interesting story/premise.
Piper was underrated imo, his acting in this was natural and believable.

I could've sworn I saw the movie, even recognized the masks but nothing else in the trailer. Until I realized the trailer you linked is for one coming out this month, not the original.
At least I know my memory isn't fading as fast as I just thought it was.
I did like the first one.

Same here. Despite some obvious flaws imo, I am a sucker for alien visitation movies. The suspense combined with the score combined with an underlying message really hooked me.

Great character-building and mood-building in this one, with just the right amount of humorous moments peppered in. It's probably in my top 10 of most watched horror movies and is the last in the string of unmissable M. Night Shyamalan movies ( the next two go off a cliff and it's been hit and miss at best after that).

Gary Oldman carried this movie start to finish.

But my god was Keanu and Wyonna unbearable.

Keanu’s english accent maybe the worst attempt at being english on film I have ever heard….like literally he loses the accent halfway thru the film and sounds like Ted. And I am a huge Keanu fan. Total miscast.

Wyonna? Oooof awful and also not a fan of her at all.

This is Oldman’s show and for that it did not sniff my top 75 because the other players were terrible.

Sir Anthony Hopkins also rang hollow as Dr Van Helsing. Meh.

What Went Wrong podcast had an episode on this movie. Regarding Keanu, he was a last minute replacement after the original actor left when shooting started. The rest of the cast had dialect coaches for months of prep, Keanu did not have that.

Those of you who ranked Hostel but did not rank or see one other torture movie coming up will have some homework to do.

I actually saw Hostel after this movie not to be named and some other extreme ones, and it ended up being really flat for me.

Obviously I really like this one. My horror tastes are definitely more "mainstream" than some of the other participants (Scoresman) so by my standards this one is a little more extreme. That said, I like it for several reasons.

The first is the world building, which is not always done in horror and seldom done especially well. Slovakia in this movie genuinely feels like a backwater that would simultaneously be attractive to a certain type of tourist and that would also absolutely feature a commercial torture operation just outside the city limits. I especially love the bombed-out foundry (or whatever it is) where all the torture takes place, the way they run their little business, etc. They include just enough details so that this feels real, without bogging the film down by explaining how they get US banks to process their ACH transactions.

The second is the "fable" aspect. As everybody who has seen this movie knows, the male characters are all basically frat-bro types who treat women as objects of amusement. Of course, the tables are turned in the second act of the movie. I like it when horror movies do stuff like this, because this genre is almost uniquely positioned to deliver social messages without coming across as preachy. Another example of something similar is the way that Americans fetch top dollar as torture victims in this world. That's a clever touch.

Finally, I just think it's a well-made modern horror film. It's tense right from the start, it has very little in the way of comic relief, and it builds suspense (and curiosity) consistently throughout the run time. I could have done with a slightly different ending, but no complaints.

Basically, all of the films in my Top 15 are ones that I feel pretty strongly about.

I think the "frat bros" are why it didn't connect with me. It's such a trope character in horror that I'm ok never seeing again. Although I do get that in a movie like this, they get what they deserve and then some.
