I think larger vehicles in general, not just semis, promote problems. At the minimum, full-sized trucks and SUVs obstruct smaller vehicles field of view and leave less space for error.
Same here. Can’t remember the last time I heard a horn. I sometimes have to remind myself to drive with “island style”.
I wonder which state has the most polite drivers?
Nope. Full time employees haven’t had PTO for as long as I’ve been here, 20+ years.
ETA The base schedule is 7 days on, 7 off, so the unstated sentiment has always been we have enough days off, as-is. Standard shift is 10 or 12 hours.
This happened where I work as well, with PTO. When I joined the group, part time workers >50% FTE got it, but full time did not (they had been encouraged to give it up years ago). People without it complained, and eventually partial FTEs were strong-armed into cashing in, and relinquishing...
Economic opportunity <> happiness.
Sure, you need some wealth for decent quality of life. But there’s a threshold above which extra money doesn’t equate to extra happiness. Or better productivity, for that matter.
There are several flavors of bird flu, and some of them have >50% mortality rate in humans. H5N1 is the most concerning, though thankfully it doesn’t really transmit person-to-person (only a half dozen cases, maybe). But flu has a nasty habit of mixing and matching viral parts from different...
I’m already part time, so working less days overall makes little difference. But I’d take a 20% cut, if my 7-shift blocks were guaranteed to be two threes, with a decompression day in between, plus one less hour/day.
Same.
I expected that response to be uncommon, but looks like many of us realize we’re really fortunate.
Probably why we have so much energy to complain about pet peeves and restaurant tabs.
Yep, connectedness/sense of community is a prominent component of all “Blue Zones”.
But what are practical ways to improve the quality of one’s relationships?
Better communication, and prioritizing time with friends and family immediately come to mind. I think ending...
For me, the answer is an emphatic yes.
But I don’t think most people agree.
Currently, my job is entertaining a 5% pay cut. While I’m not ecstatic about the prospect, the alternative is increasing productivity ~50% to maintain our current salary. It’s a no-brainer to me, but any pay reduction...
The data is inconclusive, though some studies show improvement in pain/stiffness, but not functionality, for knee osteoarthritis. That’s in comparison to placebo and hyaluronic acid injections; results vs. steroid injections were mixed.
Golfer’s elbow is a different animal than knee arthritis...
Scary. I’ve had a similar experience trail running, when a family of wild boars darted right in front of me. And I skied within 5 feet of a moose.
Since trails aren’t littered with bodies, I’m guessing collisions are pretty uncommon.
On cue, after racing a dude up the last 20 yards of this hike, followed by tennis, climbing, pickleball, and hill walking over the ensuing two days, I’ve injured my hip. I think it’s a hip flexor strain.
On the plus side, my vO2 max increased by 1!
